Do not tap, pay, or enter credentials until you have checked the offer, the advertiser’s account, the destination domain, and the information it requests. A polished video or paid placement is not proof that an offer is genuine. TikTok says it will never contact you to ask for your password, verification codes, or other sensitive personal information; a message or landing page making that request is a strong phishing warning.
If an ad looks fraudulent, use any report control TikTok shows on the ad, then report the advertiser’s account when the account itself appears deceptive. If you entered a TikTok password or believe someone accessed your account, stop using the ad link, change your password, turn on two-step verification, review devices and security alerts, and document what happened.
How can I tell if a TikTok ad is fake?
Judge the ad on four separate dimensions instead of relying on its appearance. A scam can use professional video, familiar logos, comments, or a sponsored placement. Those details do not establish that the seller, account, or destination is trustworthy.

TikTok specifically warns about suspicious links and third-party sites offering free likes, fans, Coins, or similar benefits because they may be able to obtain login information. Read the platform’s Avoid phishing on TikTok guidance when an offer uses those tactics.
Requests for passwords or codes
TikTok’s stated rule is unambiguous: “TikTok will never contact you to ask for your password, verification codes, or other sensitive personal information.” A page reached from an ad can still be an impersonator even if it displays TikTok colors or a familiar-looking sign-in form. Never provide a password or one-time code to an ad destination, direct message, or person claiming to be TikTok.

Free benefits and urgent promises
Offers of free Coins, followers, likes, fans, or a prize in exchange for signing in should be treated as a phishing risk. The combination of a valuable free benefit and a demand for credentials is more important than how convincing the video looks. Close the page and verify any genuine promotion through a trusted route you open yourself, not through the ad’s link.
Account identity and impersonation
Compare the account handle character by character with the identity named in the video. Look for substituted letters, extra punctuation, or a profile that copies someone else’s image and wording. An account can be suspicious even when the product claim is not obviously false; report the account if it is pretending to be another person or organization.
Destination domains and data requests
Read the full domain in the browser address bar before entering anything. An unusual or mismatched domain is a reason to stop and investigate, not a standalone proof of fraud. Pay attention to what the page asks for: a TikTok password, verification code, or other sensitive details is a high-confidence warning under TikTok’s own advice. Do not assume a padlock, modern design, or “secure” wording validates the business.

Use this short procedure before following an offer. It is designed to prevent the most damaging action—handing over credentials—while preserving the details you may need for a report.

- Pause the interaction. Do not tap the call-to-action, scan a code, download a file, or enter information while the ad is on screen.
- Read the promise literally. Note what you would receive, the stated deadline, and any pressure to keep the offer secret or act immediately.
- Open the advertiser’s profile without submitting data. Check the exact handle, profile description, posting history, and whether the account appears to impersonate someone.
- Inspect the link destination. If you already opened it, read the exact domain and any redirects. Do not continue to a login, payment, or download screen merely to “see what happens.”
- List the requested information. A TikTok password, verification code, or other sensitive personal information is a stop signal. Do not reuse a password on the page.
- Capture your own notes. Record the handle, ad wording, destination domain, date and time, and any transaction or message records. TikTok’s help pages do not say these records are required, but they make it easier to describe the concern accurately.
- Choose the narrowest truthful report reason. Use the ad’s report control when it is available; if the account itself is deceptive, report the account as well.
How do I report a scam ad on TikTok?
TikTok’s publicly documented help material does not establish one universal, ad-specific click sequence. Menu labels and placement can vary by app version, region, and ad format. If TikTok displays a report control attached to the sponsored post, open it, select the closest accurate reason, and submit the report. Do not invent a label or claim that a particular sequence appears on every device.
Reporting the ad and reporting the advertiser’s account are separate decisions. Use the ad control for the specific promotion when possible. Then use the profile route below when the account itself is impersonating someone, repeatedly posts deceptive material, or otherwise appears fraudulent.

TikTok’s documented general account-report route is:
- Open the advertiser’s profile.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Report.
- Choose Report account.
- Select the reason that best matches what you observed.
- Submit the report.
The wording or location of a control may change, so follow the current label shown in your app. TikTok describes this route in its Report an account help page.
Report an impersonation account
When the profile is pretending to be another person or entity, choose the impersonation path rather than a generic reason:

- From the profile, tap Share, then Report, and Report account.
- Select Pretending to Be Someone.
- Identify the person being impersonated when TikTok asks.
- Submit the report.
TikTok also describes a web reporting route for impersonation in its Report an impersonation account help page. Use the current form fields shown there; do not send passwords or verification codes as evidence.
Use “Report a problem” when the available option does not fit
If you cannot find a suitable report control, TikTok’s general support route is Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Report a problem → choose a topic. The accessible help material documents this as a general problem-reporting path, not as a confirmed replacement for the ad-specific control. Describe that the concern came from a sponsored TikTok ad, include the account handle and destination domain, and explain the exact behavior you observed.
You can open TikTok’s Report a problem help search to locate the current topic and form. Availability and labels can differ across app versions and regions.
What information should I keep for a report?
Make a factual record before the ad disappears or the account changes. Keep only information you can safely obtain without interacting further with the destination.
- The advertiser’s exact @handle and profile URL if visible.
- The ad’s wording, promised benefit, discount, deadline, or call to action.
- The full destination domain and any redirect domain you observed.
- The date and approximate time, plus your country or region if a regional offer is involved.
- Screenshots of the ad, profile, or landing page that do not expose your own passwords, codes, payment details, or private messages.
- Receipts, transaction references, or message records if you paid or communicated with the advertiser.
These notes are practical documentation, not a stated TikTok requirement. Submit a concise description tied to the reason you selected; avoid guessing who operates the account or asserting that TikTok has already decided the case.

What should I do if I clicked a TikTok scam ad?
Your next step depends on what you did after the click. If you only viewed a page and entered nothing, close it and do not return through the ad. If you entered a TikTok password, verification code, or believe the account was accessed, secure the TikTok account immediately through a trusted route that you open yourself—not by following the suspicious link.
If you entered a TikTok password or code
- Change the TikTok password promptly. Use the TikTok app or a trusted, manually opened TikTok route. Do not use the page from the ad.
- Turn on two-step verification. This adds an additional sign-in check after the password.
- Review devices with current or recent access. Remove any device or session you do not recognize.
- Check Security alerts. Look for sign-ins or account changes you did not make.
- Change the same password anywhere else it was reused. The suspicious page may have received a credential that works on other services.
TikTok says that updating your password logs the account out on other devices. That action can interrupt an unauthorized session while you review the account. The platform’s account-safety guidance covers password changes, two-step verification, device review, and Security alerts; use the current settings labels shown in your app.
If you entered payment or other personal information
Stop communicating through the ad and preserve the transaction or message records. Do not send additional “verification” payments or documents to unlock a refund or prize. If the information included a TikTok credential, complete the account-security steps above. For information unrelated to TikTok, use the relevant provider’s official support route that you open independently rather than any contact link supplied by the ad.
If you downloaded a file or installed an app
Do not open the file again or continue following instructions from the advertiser. Disconnect the suspicious app or service from your TikTok account if it appears in account settings, then review devices and Security alerts. If you cannot identify an unfamiliar session or account change, use TikTok’s in-app Report a problem route and describe what happened.

If you only opened the page
Close the tab, avoid entering data, and report the ad or account using the procedures above. Keep the destination domain and time in your notes. A click alone does not tell you whether the offer is fraudulent, but continuing to a credential or payment form increases the risk.
Which report route should you choose?

What TikTok reporting can—and cannot—tell you
Submitting a report records your concern, but TikTok’s help material does not promise removal, a reply, a particular review time, or a specific enforcement outcome. Do not wait for a report decision before changing an exposed password or checking account access.
TikTok publishes an Advertising Policies resource, but policy information is not the same as a user-facing, ad-specific reporting sequence. Follow the controls currently visible in your app and describe the conduct precisely.
A cautious decision rule
Report when the evidence you can observe supports a clear concern: the account impersonates someone, the destination requests TikTok credentials or verification codes, the offer relies on suspicious free benefits, or the ad directs you to a mismatched or unusual domain. You do not need to prove who is behind the ad before reporting it. At the same time, avoid labeling an unfamiliar domain as definitely fraudulent solely because it is unfamiliar; explain the mismatch or request that you actually observed.
