If you suspect someone is using your Social Security number (SSN), start by checking the specific clue, filing a report at IdentityTheft.gov, and contacting the company or agency involved. Unfamiliar credit accounts, tax notices, medical bills, employment records, benefit statements, bank activity, or missing mail are reasons to investigate—not proof by themselves that your SSN was stolen.
The steps below are for people in the United States. They use the Federal Trade Commission’s current IdentityTheft.gov process and explain when to involve the credit bureaus, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration (SSA), an employer, a health-care provider, or a benefits agency.
Warning signs that someone may be using your SSN
Identity theft can surface in several unrelated systems. Look for activity you cannot explain, then verify it with the organization named in the notice or record. The FTC’s warning-sign guidance does not assign a probability to any individual clue, and no single sign establishes that your SSN has been misused.

Keep the original letter, email, or account screen showing the date, sender, reference number, and contact instructions. Do not use a telephone number in a suspicious message until you verify it independently.

What to do first: the official reporting and recovery sequence
Use this order unless an account is being drained or you face an immediate safety risk. In those situations, call the bank or other affected provider immediately, then complete the FTC steps.

File at IdentityTheft.gov
Go to IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps and complete the interview. The FTC creates a personalized recovery plan and an Identity Theft Report. Save or print both. An IdentityTheft.gov account lets you return to the plan and update it. The report can help demonstrate identity theft to a creditor, bank, collector, or other business, but the FTC does not investigate and resolve each consumer’s individual account dispute.

Secure every affected business account
Call the fraud department for each bank, card issuer, lender, utility, medical provider, or merchant involved. Use a number from the organization’s statement, card, or verified website—not an unsolicited text or caller’s number. Ask the business to close or freeze a fraudulent account, remove unauthorized transactions, and explain what documents it needs. Change the username, password, security questions, and PIN for a legitimate account that was accessed. Use a unique password and enable multifactor authentication where available.

Keep copies of letters, forms, screenshots, receipts, and proof of delivery. That record prevents you from having to reconstruct the sequence later.

Review all three credit reports
Obtain reports from the three nationwide credit bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com, which the FTC references for free reports. Check unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, addresses, employers, and collection entries. Download or save a copy of each report showing the disputed item and the report date.

A report can contain an error that is not identity theft, so first ask the listed creditor for the application and account details. If the account is not yours, include it in your FTC report and dispute it with the bureau and the creditor.

Place a one-year fraud alert if you want creditors to verify you
You can request an initial fraud alert from one nationwide bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. The alert is free and lasts one year. It asks a business checking your report to take reasonable steps to verify that the applicant is really you. It does not block every transaction and does not remove existing fraudulent accounts.

Dispute fraudulent information and request a block
Send each bureau the disputed account or inquiry, a copy of your Identity Theft Report, proof of identity, and the bureau’s required dispute form or instructions. Clearly identify each fraudulent item and state that it resulted from identity theft. The FTC’s Know Your Rights guidance explains the right to ask bureaus to block identity-theft information and to dispute inaccurate information. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals, and use a trackable delivery method when mailing documents.
Also dispute the account directly with the business that supplied the information. Ask for written confirmation of the closure, balance adjustment, or correction. Check a later credit report to confirm the entry is gone or marked correctly; retain the correspondence even after the correction.

Choose longer-term credit protection
An extended fraud alert lasts seven years and requires appropriate identity-theft evidence, such as an IdentityTheft.gov report. A credit freeze is free, available broadly, and remains until you lift it. You must place a freeze separately with each of the three bureaus. A freeze restricts access to your credit report, so you may need to temporarily lift it before applying for a loan, apartment, utility service, insurance product, job, or other service that checks credit. Neither tool repairs an account that was already opened; they reduce the chance of additional credit misuse.

Use the agency route for the type of misuse
Follow the specialized branch below for employment, taxes, benefits, or medical records. A police report can be useful when a creditor, insurer, or agency requests one, or when you know where and how a crime occurred, but the FTC report and recovery plan are the central starting point for most consumers.

Fraud alert or credit freeze?
Both options are preventive controls, not a complete identity-theft solution. Choose based on how much access you want to restrict and how often you expect legitimate credit checks.

If you are actively disputing fraudulent accounts, use the alert or freeze alongside the business contacts and bureau disputes rather than instead of them.
If someone used your SSN to get a job
Employment misuse can produce tax notices, wage records, or benefit problems even when the impostor never sees your bank account.
Check your Social Security earnings record
Sign in to your my Social Security account and review the earnings and employer history. Record the employer name, year, wages, and any other entry you do not recognize. Compare it with pay statements, tax returns, addresses, and travel or school records that show where you actually were.

Ask SSA to correct an error
Contact a local SSA office about incorrect work-history information and provide the evidence it requests. Use the contact details on IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery guidance or SSA’s official site rather than a number supplied by a caller. Keep the submission and any SSA reference number in your log.
Consider the employment-verification lock
The FTC says myE-Verify can let a person lock an SSN for use in employment-eligibility checks. Service features and availability can change, so confirm the current instructions before relying on the lock. A lock does not correct an existing wage record; it is an additional measure intended to reduce new employment-eligibility misuse.
If someone filed taxes with your SSN
Do not ignore an IRS letter because you did not file a return. Read the notice carefully, use the response method and deadline printed on it, and keep the envelope with your records. The IRS may ask you to verify your identity or provide details about a return or refund you did not submit.
Follow the IRS identity-theft instructions referenced by the notice. For applicable tax-identity-theft cases, the FTC points to IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. File your own accurate return and pay taxes you actually owe by the applicable deadline; an impostor’s filing does not remove your obligation to file. Do not send a duplicate return or affidavit to an unverified address—use the IRS directions for your case.
If someone misused Social Security benefits
For an unauthorized application, payment, or change involving Social Security benefits, contact SSA promptly and report the suspected fraud through the SSA Office of the Inspector General route identified in the FTC’s recovery guidance. Verify the current reporting address or telephone number on an official SSA or OIG page before sending personal documents, because agency contact details and online forms can change.

Ask SSA what action it has taken, whether payments can be stopped or redirected, and what evidence is needed to restore your record. Keep benefit notices and payment records separate from ordinary credit-dispute paperwork.
If your medical identity or records are wrong
Contact the provider, hospital, laboratory, pharmacy, or insurer named in the bill or claim. Ask the organization’s privacy or fraud department for the records connected with the service and request correction of inaccurate medical information. Tell the provider which appointment, diagnosis, prescription, or claim is not yours. If an insurer rejected a legitimate claim because of the incorrect record, ask for a new review after the provider corrects its files.
Medical records can affect future care, so give your clinician a concise written notice of the disputed information and keep copies of the correction request and response.

An unsolicited caller who says your SSN will be suspended, demands immediate payment, or asks for a wire transfer, cash, or gift card is displaying a scam warning. The FTC’s SSA guidance says: “Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended.” It also states, “SSA will never call to threaten you or your benefits.” Caller ID can be spoofed.
- Do not confirm your SSN, date of birth, bank account, login code, or debit-card details to the caller.
- Do not click links, install software, or stay on the line while the caller “transfers” you.
- Hang up and independently find SSA’s contact information if you need to check a real notice.
- Report the suspicious call to the FTC through its SSA-impersonation guidance.
A scam call may be unrelated to any actual SSN misuse. Treat it as a fraud attempt unless you independently find a separate, verifiable account or agency record.
How to organize evidence and follow up
A simple case file makes disputes faster and helps you meet deadlines.
- Create a timeline beginning with the first notice or transaction.
- Use a separate folder for the FTC report, credit reports, bureau disputes, business letters, IRS or SSA notices, and medical records.
- Record every case number, mailing address, upload confirmation, and promised response date.
- Redact unnecessary SSN digits when sharing copies; provide the full number only through a verified channel that requires it.
- Review bank and card activity frequently while disputes are open and change credentials again if a provider reports another compromise.
- Check a later credit report after each bureau or creditor says a correction was completed.
IdentityTheft.gov is a U.S. consumer-help route, not a legal determination that theft occurred. Procedures, contact details, and online services can change, so verify the current instructions on the linked official pages when you act.
When a new SSN is—and is not—an option
SSA generally does not issue a replacement SSN merely because information was exposed. The FTC explains that evidence of ongoing misuse is normally required, and a new number may not solve the underlying problem: employers, lenders, insurers, and government records can continue linking you to the old number. Ask SSA about current eligibility only after documenting the misuse and completing ordinary recovery steps. A new number also does not automatically transfer or repair your credit, tax, medical, or employment history.
