If you see a transaction you do not recognize, contact your bank or card issuer immediately through its official app, website, or a phone number you already trust. Identify the exact transaction, say whether you authorized it, ask how to dispute it in writing, and secure any affected card or account. Don’t use a link or phone number in a suspicious message. This guide covers general U.S. consumer guidance; the applicable rules depend on the payment method and facts.
How to spot a suspicious bank transaction
Review your account’s transaction history and statements regularly. A suspicious entry is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that fraud occurred: legitimate charges can appear under an unfamiliar business or payment processor name.
Look for more than large purchases
- An unfamiliar merchant name or a transaction associated with a place you did not visit.
- A small charge or debit you cannot explain. Thieves may use a small transaction to test compromised details before attempting more.
- Duplicate or unexpected withdrawals, or activity on a card after you suspect its details were exposed.
- Transactions that appear months after a data theft or other suspected exposure.
If you suspect identity theft as well as account fraud, check your credit reports for unfamiliar inquiries, new accounts, or incorrect balances. Pay attention to bills or debt-collector contacts about debts you do not recognize.
Recognize scam messages before responding
A caller, text, email, letter, or online message claiming to be from a bank may be fraudulent. Warning signs include pressure to act immediately, requests for money or personal information, impersonation of a trusted organization, or instructions to pay using a gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, prepaid card, or payment app. Requests for your password, account access, or security code deserve particular caution.

Check a purported fraud alert independently. Open your bank’s official app or website yourself, or call a number you know is genuine, such as the one printed on your card. Do not click a suspicious message link or call a number included in the message.
The FTC warns: “The FTC will never threaten you, say you must transfer your money to ‘protect it,’ or tell you to withdraw cash or buy gold and give it to someone. That’s a scam.”

What to do as soon as you find a suspicious transaction
- Contact the right institution through a trusted channel. Use the bank or credit union’s official app, website, or a known phone number. Ask for its fraud or disputes team.
- Describe what happened accurately. Give the transaction date, amount, merchant or recipient descriptor, account or card involved, and when you noticed it. State that you did not authorize it if that is true. If you were deceived into making the payment yourself, explain that rather than describing it as an unauthorized transaction.
- Ask what can be stopped or secured. Ask the bank to block or replace a compromised card, secure online access, and explain whether you should change the debit PIN. Change exposed passwords, including any reused passwords, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Open a formal dispute. Ask how to submit written notice, what supporting documents are needed, and whether there is a deadline for follow-up evidence. Request a case or reference number.
- Keep a record of the case. Save relevant statements, messages, screenshots, dispute letters, and copies of documents you send. Note the date and time of each call, the representative’s name if available, the case number, and the instructions you receive. If the bank requests written confirmation, send it promptly and keep a copy.
- Report related scams or identity theft. Report scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If someone used your personal information to impersonate you or open accounts, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.
- Watch for further activity. Continue checking transactions and statements, including after a replacement card arrives. Update legitimate recurring payments tied to a replaced card.
If a scammer accessed your device, the FTC advises updating its security software and running a scan. Ask your institution whether it needs a police report for your particular claim; the cited federal guidance does not establish a universal police-report requirement.
Which institution to contact depends on how the money moved
The payment method matters, as does whether someone used your account without permission or you were tricked into authorizing a payment. Contact the provider for the payment method and ask it to investigate or attempt recovery.

A request to reverse or recover a payment is not a guarantee that the money can be returned. Report the problem as soon as possible.
U.S. electronic-transfer reporting deadlines and investigations
CFPB guidance describes general federal timelines for certain unauthorized electronic fund transfers. These are not a reason to wait: the transaction type, when you learned about a lost card, statement dates, and the facts of the claim matter.

CFPB guidance says the bank must correct an error within one business day after deciding that an error occurred and report its findings within three business days. Follow the institution’s instructions for written notice and supporting documents, and keep copies.

An unauthorized transaction generally means a charge or withdrawal you did not make or allow. A scam can instead persuade you to send money yourself—for example, by posing as a trusted organization and claiming the transfer is needed to protect your funds. Tell the bank what actually happened: the distinction can affect how the institution handles the claim and which rules apply.

The FTC recommends contacting the relevant bank, app, or wire company immediately about a scam payment and asking for a reversal or refund. Contact the card issuer or bank for a card payment. Recovery is not assured, but a prompt report gives the provider a chance to act.
