Start with evidence, not accusations. Compare the suspicious activity with the artist’s normal audience, geography, playlist sources, listener engagement and documented campaigns. Preserve the relevant records, then report through the platform’s current official channel or through the artist’s distributor or label. A spike, playlist addition or warning can justify an investigation; none proves who arranged the activity or that an artist knowingly participated.
This guide explains what artificial streaming is, how to test a suspicious pattern, what to save, where to escalate it and how Spotify, Apple Music and SoundCloud describe their rules and consequences.
What artificial music-streaming fraud means
The U.S. Copyright Office describes streaming fraud as activity that can include bot farms, click farms, playlist stuffing and account hijacking. These methods create or manipulate plays so that music appears more popular than it is, diverting attention and potentially diluting the royalty pool available to legitimately streamed works.

A song can receive an unexpected editorial mention, a viral share or legitimate international interest. Spotify also acknowledges that a track may be targeted with artificial streams without the artist’s knowledge. The responsible question is therefore not “Does this look strange?” but “What evidence supports a platform review, and what explanation fits the artist’s documented activity?”

The Copyright Office’s notice of inquiry dated October 7, 2026 asks for information about the prevalence, effects, prevention efforts and possible solutions relating to music-streaming fraud. Initial written comments are due November 23, 2026, with reply comments due December 21, 2026. Those proceedings do not establish that any particular artist, release or platform account committed fraud.
How do I know if my streams are fake?
No single dashboard number can answer that question. Review several independent signals over the same time window and compare them with the artist’s historical baseline and known release campaigns.
1. An unexplained spike or rapid reversal
Look for a sudden increase that has no corresponding release, press mention, live appearance, advertising campaign or other documented cause. Spotify lists a rapid rise followed by a drop as a possible signal. A spike from a country or city where the track has never previously had meaningful activity deserves closer inspection, but legitimate discovery can also be sudden. Record the exact start time, peak, duration and decline rather than relying on a later impression.

Compare the new locations with the artist’s established listener base, language, touring markets and promotion targeting. IMPALA identifies an audience pattern that does not resemble the artist’s usual listeners as a warning sign. Geography is a lead, not a verdict: a licensing deal, a playlist with a regional audience or a successful local campaign can change a track’s reach legitimately.
3. Low-quality or concentrated playlist sources
Inspect the playlists sending the traffic. Investigate unknown playlists, repeated placements across unrelated tracks, an unusually large volume from one third-party playlist, or lists that have little coherent theme, weak follower activity or a history of rotating many unrelated songs. Save playlist names, URLs as displayed in the platform, curator information, dates added and the share of streams attributed to each source.

4. Streams that do not translate into listeners or engagement
Compare total streams with unique listeners, saves, follows, repeat listening, comments where available and other audience measures. An unusually high number of streams per listener, many plays from a small set of accounts or sources, and little audience growth alongside a large stream count are patterns worth escalating. They still do not identify the person or service responsible.
5. A distributor or platform warning
A notice about artificial activity, a fee, a takedown threat or a request for information raises the priority of the review. If a promotion company was hired, Spotify advises artists to tell their label or distributor the service’s name and details. Keep the notice intact, including its date, subject line, reference number and any stated track or territory.

6. Conflicting dashboard, public and royalty figures
Do not assume that every number updates at the same time. Spotify explains that confirmed artificial activity may be removed from public figures or withheld from royalties on different schedules. For royalty information, Spotify recommends the label or distributor’s royalty report rather than a public counter. Compare the reporting periods and definitions before treating a difference as evidence of manipulation.
A practical investigation workflow
Use a repeatable process so that a legitimate campaign can be explained and a suspicious pattern can be reported without contaminating the evidence.
- Define the comparison window. Choose the unusual period and an equivalent baseline, such as the preceding four to eight weeks or the same stage of a prior release campaign. Note the platform, track version, territory and dashboard time zone.
- Inventory legitimate causes. List release dates, advertising, public relations, creator campaigns, radio, sync use, touring, label activity, editorial pitching and any agency or promotion service. Match each event to its start and end date.
- Break down the traffic. Export or capture streams, listeners, saves, follows, source playlists, territories and any available account or device indicators. Look for concentration, abrupt changes and repeated sources.
- Check the artist’s own records. Compare the platform data with campaign invoices, targeting settings, contracts, correspondence, distributor statements and audience responses. A documented campaign may explain an otherwise surprising location or playlist.
- Preserve originals. Save dated screenshots and downloaded reports before numbers change. Keep the original files, not only cropped images, and record who accessed each report and when.
- Ask for review through the proper channel. Send a factual account to the distributor, label or platform route that applies. Request confirmation of receipt and retain the case number or correspondence.

- Dates and time zones for the suspected activity, including the first change, peak and return toward baseline.
- Screenshots or exports of stream, listener, follower, save and source-playlist analytics.
- Geographic breakdowns and any available audience or account concentration indicators.
- Playlist names, displayed links, curator details, dates of addition and removals, and repeated appearances across tracks.
- Release calendars, advertising records, targeting settings, press coverage, live dates and other explanations for a legitimate increase.
- Contracts, invoices and correspondence with promotion services, playlist curators, labels or distributors.
- Platform or distributor warnings, fees, takedown notices and support-ticket numbers.
- A short chronology that states what changed, when it changed and which records support each observation.
Do not alter screenshots to make a pattern look stronger. Keep sensitive personal information protected and provide only what the platform or distributor needs for the investigation.

Spotify
- Notify the artist’s label or distributor promptly and include the track, time window, observed locations, playlist sources and saved records.
- If a promotion service was involved, provide its name, purchase details, promises and correspondence. Spotify says the label or distributor can report the information to Spotify for investigation.
- Use Spotify’s current route for notifying the company about suspicious playlists, following the live instructions shown to your account or region.
- Describe observations as allegations requiring review. Do not name a person as the perpetrator unless independently established evidence supports that statement.
Spotify states that any service guaranteeing streams, Spotify followers or playlist placement in exchange for money is not legitimate and should be avoided. Confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, count toward public stream numbers or charts, or positively affect recommendation algorithms. Depending on severity, Spotify lists possible consequences including playlist removal, distributor warnings or fees, account suspension and track removal.
Spotify’s artificial-streaming fee for labels and distributors took effect April 1, 2024. It applies per track when flagrant activity is detected at very high rates. It is a charge to the label or distributor, not a general artist-facing per-stream fee. A distributor may nevertheless pass on information, restrict a release or seek clarification under its own agreement.
Apple Music
Apple Music for Artists says that a company or person promising more plays for a fee is not authorized by Apple and may use bots or fake accounts. Treat a paid guarantee as a policy risk and stop the arrangement while you document what happened. Follow the current Apple support or distributor escalation route available to your account; access and procedures can differ between independent artists, labels and service providers.
Apple’s provider-support update dated September 28, 2026 describes a Disguised Listening Report in the Music Analytics API. The report identifies content used as cover while manipulative users stream unrelated content, and Apple says that activity is not counted toward the Stream Manipulation Adjustment. Apple also says Flagged Streams and In Review Content Reports continue daily, while Excluded Streams Reports align with the fiscal period of Apple Music financial reports. These are provider-side tools; the announcement does not mean every artist has direct access to them.

SoundCloud
SoundCloud warns that guaranteed playlist placement cannot be bought and that paid promotion services may violate its rules. It says artificial activity can lead to takedowns or fees, and notes that Spotify charges distributors, including SoundCloud for Artists, per track flagged for artificial streams. Use SoundCloud’s current official support route or ask the distributor to escalate rather than relying on an old email address or an unofficial contact.
Other services
For any other platform, use its current official reporting or support channel, or ask the artist’s distributor or label to escalate. Platform routes change, and a procedure described in an older article may no longer be valid. Before sending a report, verify that the page is operated by the service and that it applies to the relevant country, account type and content category.
How to write an effective report
A useful report is specific, chronological and neutral. Include:
- Identity: artist name, track title, version, catalog identifier if available and account or profile name.
- Time window: dates, times and time zone for the anomaly and the comparison baseline.
- Observed changes: stream and listener movements, geography, playlist sources, follower changes and engagement measures.
- Known activity: campaigns, advertising, releases, performances, press or promotion services that could explain the result.
- Evidence: filenames or links to the saved reports, screenshots, invoices and correspondence.
- Requested action: ask the service to investigate, identify any confirmed artificial activity and explain any account, royalty or catalog action.
Use wording such as “We observed an abrupt increase from these sources and cannot match it to our documented campaign.” Avoid “This person bought bots” unless a competent investigation has established that fact. The available guidance supports reporting suspicion and requesting review, not public accusation.
Can I be penalized for streams I did not buy?
Platforms can act on artificial activity associated with a track even when the artist says it was unsolicited. Spotify explicitly says artists can be targeted without their knowledge. That is why prompt documentation and notification matter: they create a contemporaneous record that the artist identified the pattern, did not authorize it and sought review.

Do not purchase additional promotion to “balance out” suspicious traffic, ask friends to generate replacement plays or delete records. Stop any service that guarantees streams or placements, preserve its promises and invoices, and tell the distributor or label exactly what was purchased. A platform’s final decision may depend on its internal evidence and contract terms; no outside guide can guarantee that a release will avoid a warning, fee, withholding or removal.
How to compare two suspected incidents
When deciding which case needs faster escalation, compare the same dimensions rather than relying on the largest raw number.

Red flags when hiring promotion
Walk away from a provider that guarantees a number of streams, followers or playlist placements for a fee, refuses to explain its traffic sources, will not identify the campaign’s target audience, or asks for account credentials. Apple, Spotify and SoundCloud each warn against paid guarantees or unauthorized promotion methods. A legitimate marketer can describe the audience and deliverables without promising that a platform will count every resulting play.

Common mistakes that make an investigation harder
- Calling a spike proof of fraud before checking release and advertising records.
- Publicly accusing a curator, artist or company instead of sending evidence through the platform’s review route.
- Relying on public stream counters while ignoring the distributor’s royalty report and reporting period.
- Waiting until a dashboard changes and losing screenshots of the original pattern.
- Using an old support email or form without confirming that it is still the platform’s official route.
- Assuming a provider-side report is available to every independent artist.
- Buying more streams to compensate for suspicious activity.
A concise incident checklist
- Mark the anomaly’s first date, peak and decline, including time zone.
- Capture platform analytics, geography, source playlists, listener and engagement measures.
- Compare the period with the artist’s baseline and documented campaigns.
- Save promotion contracts, invoices, messages and any platform or distributor warning.
- Stop services that guarantee streams or placements.
- Notify the distributor or label; use the platform’s current official reporting route where available.
- Request investigation in factual language and retain the case number.
- Do not publish an accusation or claim certainty before the platform completes its review.

What should I do if my song is added to a botted playlist?
Save the playlist page, date, track position and resulting analytics, then notify your distributor or label and use the platform’s current suspicious-playlist reporting route. State that the placement was not authorized if that is the case; do not buy replacement streams or publicly accuse the curator.
Is a high stream-to-listener ratio proof of bots?
No. It is a signal to compare with geography, sources, engagement and documented campaigns. Only the platform’s investigation can determine whether activity violated its rules.
Who should receive my evidence first?
For Spotify, promptly contact the artist’s label or distributor and include any promotion-service details; the label or distributor can escalate to Spotify. On other services, use the current official support route or ask the distributor or label to do so.
Can I access Apple’s Disguised Listening Report as an independent artist?
Apple described it as available through the Music Analytics API for providers on September 28, 2026. The announcement does not establish direct access for every independent artist, so confirm availability with your distributor or service account.
