Stop, do not reply, and do not tap anything. An unexpected WhatsApp message or call that creates urgency, impersonates someone you trust, asks for money or one-time codes, or sends a suspicious link is potentially a scam. Capture evidence first, verify the sender through a phone number or channel you already know, then report and block the account in WhatsApp. If you sent money or exposed banking access, contact your bank or payment provider immediately.
This guide explains the warning signs, the exact reporting sequence, country-specific escalation routes, and what to do after you have shared information.
Warning signs that a WhatsApp message or call is a scam
No single clue proves fraud, but several together should make you stop. Scammers often combine impersonation with pressure so that you act before checking the story.

WhatsApp specifically lists grammatical mistakes, link-based feature activation, app-download requests, and demands for credit-card, bank-account, birth-date or password information as warning signs. Its guidance also recommends confirming identity with a voice or video call, then reporting, blocking and deleting the message.

Meta’s safety guidance uses the rule “PAUSE: Take time before you respond.” Ask whether the request makes sense, whether it is unusually lucrative, and whether the sender is pushing for money, gift cards or PIN codes. A genuine friend or family member can be checked by calling a known number. An unexpected job message deserves the same skepticism: the US Federal Trade Commission says, “Real employers will never contact you that way,” and warns against paying anyone to obtain work or payment.
Pause and verify before you engage
- Stop the conversation. Do not answer questions, argue, threaten the caller or announce that you are reporting them. Any reply confirms that your number is active and gives the scammer more opportunities.
- Check the context. Look at the profile name, photo, country code, account details and the wording of the request, but do not treat a familiar photo or name as proof. Those details can be copied.
- Use a separate, trusted channel. Call the friend’s existing phone number, start a new conversation using a contact already saved, visit the organization’s official website by typing its address yourself, or use a statement or card you already possess. Do not use a number, link or email supplied in the suspicious message.
- Ask a simple identity question only if necessary. A real contact should be able to explain the request through the independent channel. If you cannot verify the identity, treat the message or call as fraudulent.
Voice or video from the WhatsApp account itself is not enough if the account may already be compromised. The independent channel is what matters.
What to do when you receive a suspicious message or call
Follow this order. It preserves evidence, limits damage and prevents the scammer from contacting you again on WhatsApp.
- Stop responding. Do not click links, download files or apps, send money, scan a code, share a password, reveal payment details or provide an authentication code.
- Preserve evidence before deleting anything. Take screenshots showing the conversation, profile, phone number, links, payment instructions and any dates or times. For a call, capture the call entry and caller details. Keep transaction receipts, bank references and the exact wording of the request.
- Verify independently. Contact the alleged friend, employer, business or agency through a number or website you already know is genuine. If the request cannot be confirmed, continue as if it is a scam.
- Report the sender in WhatsApp. Use the chat or profile’s Report action. WhatsApp says a report can include up to five of the sender’s recent messages. For a reported call, WhatsApp may receive basic information about up to five recent calls. The reported user or group is not notified.
- Block the account. Reporting sends information for review; it does not by itself stop the account from contacting you. Blocking stops that account’s WhatsApp messages, calls and status updates from reaching you.
- Delete the chat only after evidence is safe. Deleting removes it from your view and can make later documentation harder. Keep screenshots and payment records in a secure location before clearing the conversation.
- Escalate outside WhatsApp when appropriate. Use the route for your country, the channel involved and the urgency of the harm, as described below.
How to report a WhatsApp message
From an open one-to-one chat
- Open the conversation and review the visible sender details.
- Open the contact information from the chat header.
- Choose Report and follow the confirmation prompts. If offered, include the recent messages that demonstrate the scam.
- Return to the contact information and choose Block. Keep your screenshots before deleting the chat.
Do not forward the scam to friends as a warning if forwarding would expose their numbers or encourage someone to tap the link. Share screenshots through a safe channel instead.
From a WhatsApp call
- Open the WhatsApp call history and select the suspicious call or its information screen.
- Use the available report option for the caller.
- Save a screenshot of the call record and number, then block the caller.
A reported call can provide WhatsApp with basic information about up to five recent calls. If the caller also sent messages, report the chat separately so the relevant messages are included.

From a group
Use the group or participant information screen to report the offending account or group, then leave or block as appropriate. Preserve the messages that show the request, the sender’s number and any payment or link instructions. Do not assume that a familiar group name means every participant is trusted.
Choosing an external reporting route
The best escalation depends on where you are, what happened and which service can still limit the harm. A WhatsApp report addresses the account; a bank, government agency or mobile carrier may be able to address the financial transaction, impersonation or phone traffic.

If you are outside the UK or US, use your national fraud-reporting service, bank or telecom regulator. Choose the route that matches the harm: a suspicious contact with no loss, a phone-number abuse report, impersonation of a government body, or an urgent financial exposure.
If you sent money, shared a code or exposed an account
You sent a payment
Contact the bank, card issuer, money-transfer service or cryptocurrency provider immediately using a number from its official website, card or statement. State that the payment was induced by fraud and ask whether it can be stopped, recalled or flagged. Give the exact amount, time, recipient details and transaction reference. Do not wait for a WhatsApp investigation before calling the payment provider.
You revealed a password or banking detail
Change the exposed password through the genuine service, starting with the account that uses that password elsewhere. Contact the bank if payment details or account credentials were disclosed. Review recent activity and alert the provider to transactions or access you do not recognize.

You shared a one-time code or registration code
Assume the code may have been used to access the account. Stop communicating with the requester, secure the account through WhatsApp’s legitimate account-recovery process and warn close contacts through another channel that messages from the account may not be yours. Never share a future code to “fix” the problem.
You installed an app or opened a suspicious file
Disconnect the affected device from sensitive work or banking sessions, remove software you do not recognize, update the device and run its built-in security checks. From a different, trusted device, change important passwords and contact your bank if the device was used for payments. Preserve the message and file details for investigators.
Scam patterns worth recognizing
“Family member” emergency
A new number claims to be a child, relative or friend whose phone is broken and asks for an urgent transfer or gift card. Verify by calling the person’s known number or asking a question that only the real person would answer through that separate channel.
Employer or task scam
An unexpected job offer promises quick earnings for rating products, completing tasks or recruiting others, then demands a deposit, “unlock” fee or payment to withdraw earnings. Do not pay to obtain a job or to receive wages.
Government or tax impersonation
The sender claims to be a tax authority or other agency and threatens arrest, penalties or immediate account closure. Government impersonation should be checked through the agency’s published website or a letter you already possess, never through the number or link in the WhatsApp message.

Prize, investment or giveaway lure
The message promises a reward that you did not enter for, or guaranteed returns with no risk. Requests for a processing fee, identity documents, bank details or a referral payment are stop signs.
Account-verification and feature-activation trick
The sender says your WhatsApp account will be closed unless you tap a link, scan a code or install an app. Use only the controls inside the official WhatsApp application and do not follow the sender’s instructions.
Malicious link or download
The link may lead to a fake sign-in page, a payment form or an application that gives an attacker access to the device. Do not open it; if you already did, treat any entered password or downloaded file as exposed and follow the recovery steps above.

- Replying “Who is this?” before saving evidence and verifying the identity.
- Calling the number supplied in the message instead of a known number.
- Trusting a profile photo, display name or caller ID as authentication.
- Deleting the chat before recording the number, links, payment instructions and timestamps.
- Reporting but forgetting to block, allowing further messages and calls.
- Waiting to contact the bank because the amount seems small.
- Forwarding a suspicious link to warn someone, which can expose another person to the same trap.
Prevention and account habits
- Keep WhatsApp and your phone’s operating system updated through their official update channels.
- Review unexpected requests using a second communication method, even when the message appears to come from someone you know.
- Never disclose passwords, payment details, birth dates, PINs or one-time codes in response to an unsolicited message or call.
- Use the pause rule for every urgent request: stop, verify, then decide.
- Tell family members and colleagues how you will verify an emergency request, so a scammer cannot rely on panic or secrecy.
- Keep records of legitimate support numbers, bank contacts and government websites separately from WhatsApp conversations.
Meta said that 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts linked to criminal scam centers were taken down in the first half of 2025. That enforcement does not make every incoming contact safe; your independent verification and prompt reporting remain the practical defenses.
When a message is suspicious but you have not lost money
You should still preserve a screenshot, report the account in WhatsApp, block it and use the appropriate national or carrier reporting route. A lack of financial loss changes the urgency of contacting a bank, not the value of documenting the attempt. Reporting patterns can help services identify linked accounts and numbers.
