An unexpected calendar event is not proof that your account was hacked, but it can be a phishing lure. Treat the invitation as suspicious when it asks you to sign in, open a document, call a number, pay an invoice, enter credentials, or approve an unfamiliar app. Do not click, call, open, type, or approve anything in the invite until you verify it independently.
Check the sender’s real address and domain, inspect every link destination without opening it, look for unexpected attachments and permission requests, then use your calendar or mail provider’s reporting control. If you already entered a password or authorized an app, secure the account and revoke the app’s access immediately.
Why calendar invitations are used for phishing
Calendar invitations arrive in a context people normally trust: a meeting schedule. A convincing event can put an attacker’s link, phone number, attachment, or authorization request beside a familiar date and time. The goal may be to steal a password, collect payment details, install malware, or persuade you to grant an application access to cloud data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) described a related consent-phishing pattern in an alert dated September 1, 2026. Earlier campaigns impersonated event coordinators or planners and sent a purported invitation that asked targets to verify their identity through an attacker-controlled application. Approving the request could give that application access to data configured in the account. A genuine-looking Microsoft, Google, or other login and consent screen does not by itself prove that the application is legitimate.

An event can also appear because of a legitimate booking service, a colleague using a different calendar system, a forwarded invitation, or a setting that automatically adds invitations. Its unexpected appearance warrants inspection; it does not establish that the account is compromised.
First-pass triage: decide whether to interact
Use this quick decision rule before opening anything in the invitation:
- Do not interact if the event is unsolicited and asks for a password, payment, identity verification, urgent action, a phone call, an attachment download, or new application permissions.
- Pause and verify if the invitation claims to come from a familiar person or organization but uses a new address, a mismatched domain, unusual wording, or a link you did not expect.
- Proceed only after independent confirmation through a channel you already trust, such as a known phone number, an existing chat thread, or the organization’s official website.
Do not use the phone number, reply address, website, or support instructions contained in a suspicious invitation for verification. Those details may be controlled by the attacker.
How to inspect a suspicious calendar invite
Check the sender identity and actual domain
Read the complete sender address, not just the display name. A message that says “Payroll Department” may come from an unrelated mailbox. Compare the domain after the @ with the organization’s known domain. Watch for lookalikes that add a word, substitute a character, use a different top-level domain, or rely on a misspelling.
A familiar display name is weak evidence. If a colleague appears to invite you from an address you have never seen, contact that colleague through another channel before accepting or following the event’s instructions.

Understand Outlook’s authentication indicators
In Outlook, a question-mark icon can mean Outlook could not verify the sender’s identity using its email-authentication techniques. An underlined via label can indicate that the sending domain differs from the address shown in the From field.
Microsoft cautions that a failed authentication result or a via label is not conclusive proof of malicious intent. Legitimate services can send mail on behalf of another domain. Treat either indicator as a reason to inspect the address, domain, links, and context more closely—especially when the sender is unfamiliar or the identity has changed unexpectedly.
Recommended Free Tools
Inspect links without opening them
On a computer, hover over a link to reveal its destination. On a phone or tablet, Microsoft’s phishing guidance describes pressing and holding the link to display the destination without opening it. Compare the visible address with the organization you expected.
- Be wary of a destination on an unrelated domain, a free hosting domain, or a shortened URL that hides the final address.
- Look for deceptive subdomains. In
example.attacker.tld, the registrable domain isattacker.tld, notexample. - Be cautious with links that immediately request a password, one-time code, payment, or application consent.
- Do not assume a padlock, HTTPS, or a familiar sign-in design makes the destination trustworthy. Encryption protects the connection; it does not certify the operator.
If the destination is unclear, do not test it in a browser. Navigate to the organization’s known website yourself or ask the supposed sender to confirm the invitation.
Look for unexpected attachments
An invitation that includes a document, invoice, compressed archive, or calendar file you did not request deserves extra scrutiny. Do not open an attachment merely to identify it. Verify the sender and the reason for the file first. If your organization has a security team, submit the original message through its established process rather than forwarding it casually to colleagues.

Notice requests for credentials, payment, or permissions
Phishing invites often create a problem that appears urgent: a canceled meeting, an unpaid invoice, a security check, or a document that supposedly requires immediate sign-in. A legitimate meeting generally does not require you to disclose your password in the invitation itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Application-consent prompts require particular care. Read the application name, publisher, requested scopes, and account being accessed. If you did not deliberately seek that application, cancel the request. Approving OAuth or another token-based authorization can give the app continuing access even after you change your password.
Assess pressure and writing quality in context
Urgency, threats of account closure, unusual grammar, a sudden change in tone, or an improbable request from a senior person are useful warning signs. None is conclusive alone: legitimate messages can be rushed or poorly written, and polished phishing messages can look professional. Make the decision from the combination of sender, domain, destination, request, and context.
What to do when an invitation looks suspicious
- Stop interaction. Do not click links, open attachments, call numbers, enter passwords or payment details, reply, or approve an unfamiliar permission request.
- Record enough information for reporting. Note the event title, sender address, claimed organization, date and time, visible links, attachment names, and any application or permissions requested. Take screenshots if your provider may remove the event during reporting, but do not capture or share passwords or one-time codes.
- Verify independently. Contact a known person through an existing phone number, chat, or email thread. For a company or service, type its official website into the browser or use a telephone number from a statement or prior correspondence—not a detail supplied in the invitation.
- Report through the provider control. Use the event-level or message-level process described below. Reporting helps the provider classify the item and may remove it from your calendar.
- Delete or dismiss it after reporting. If the event remains, remove it using the calendar’s normal delete control. Keep the original evidence if your workplace or an investigator needs it.
How to report a calendar invite or related phishing message
Reporting controls depend on the service, account type, and client. Google Calendar and Outlook do not use the same workflow.
| Service and situation | Control | What it does and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google Calendar event sent from Google Calendar | Open the event on a computer, then choose More actions > Report as spam. | Google says the event is removed. For a recurring event, the entire series is removed. The control applies only to events sent from Google Calendar. |
| Google Calendar event created by another provider, app, or service | The Google Calendar spam control is unavailable for that event. | Use the provider’s reporting route, your organization’s security channel, or the workplace IT process. Do not assume the Google control covers third-party events. |
| Outlook.com suspicious message | Select the message and choose Report > Report phishing. | Microsoft says this reports the sender but does not automatically block it. Blocking is a separate setting. Use the original message’s reporting feature. |
| Non-Outlook mail client handling an Outlook-related message | Attach the original email to a new message addressed to phish@office365.microsoft.com. |
Microsoft recommends attaching rather than forwarding so the original headers remain available. |
Report an eligible Google Calendar event
- On a computer, open the suspicious event in Google Calendar.
- Select More actions.
- Choose Report as spam and confirm.
Google’s control is specifically for events sent from Google Calendar. Events created by another calendar provider, app, or service cannot be reported through this control. Reporting removes the event; when the event is recurring, Google says the entire recurring series is removed.

Report a suspicious Outlook message
- In Outlook.com, select the suspicious message.
- Choose Report, then Report phishing.
- If you also want to prevent future mail from the sender, use Outlook’s separate block setting.
Microsoft recommends reporting from the original message. If you are using a different mail client, create a new message and attach the original email to phish@office365.microsoft.com rather than forwarding it. Attaching preserves headers that can help analysis.
When the event has no matching email or no report button
Sometimes an event is visible in the calendar but the invitation email is unavailable, or a client does not show the expected reporting control. Use your employer’s or school’s official IT or security reporting route. Account administrators may have provider-specific investigation tools that are not exposed in consumer clients. Do not guess a universal button sequence: labels and availability vary by provider, account type, and application.
Optional setting to reduce unsolicited Google Calendar events
Google Calendar’s desktop settings include an option to limit automatic additions:
- Open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Open Event settings.
- Under Add invitations to my calendar, select Only if the sender is known.
Google defines a known sender as someone in your contacts, someone in your organization, or someone you have interacted with. Google also warns that this choice might reveal to senders that they are not in your contacts. Consider that privacy trade-off before enabling it. This path is specific to Google Calendar; it should not be assumed to exist in Outlook or another calendar system.

You entered a password or other credentials
- Change the password immediately at the account’s genuine website, reached through a bookmark or by typing the known address yourself.
- Change the same password anywhere else you reused it. Reused credentials can expose multiple accounts.
- Enable multifactor authentication on affected accounts, preferably with a method your organization approves.
- Review recent sign-ins, recovery methods, forwarding rules, and other account changes for activity you do not recognize.
- Tell your work or school IT/security team if the account is managed by an employer or school.
Do not provide a one-time code to anyone who contacts you about the incident. A legitimate support worker should not need you to read a code from your authenticator or text message to them.
You approved an unfamiliar application
Changing the password alone may not remove token-based access already granted to the application. Open the account’s security or connected-app settings, identify the unfamiliar application, and revoke or remove its access. Then change the password, enable multifactor authentication, and report the incident to the account owner or administrator.
Save screenshots and details of the application name, publisher, requested permissions, time of approval, and data that may have been exposed. Avoid deleting evidence before your security team has had a chance to review it.
You shared payment or banking information
Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or payment service using the number on a card or statement. Ask what monitoring, replacement, or dispute steps apply. If money was lost or identity theft occurred, Microsoft’s phishing guidance advises reporting to local law enforcement.
You may have been targeted by the IC3-described campaign
The September 1, 2026 IC3 alert concerns victims of the consent-phishing campaign it describes, not every unwanted calendar event. If your experience matches that campaign and an attacker-controlled application received access, follow your organization’s incident process and the reporting directions for the relevant security authorities, including a local FBI field office or IC3 where appropriate. A routine spam invitation without credential disclosure, payment loss, or unauthorized app access does not automatically require an FBI report.
Why an unknown event can appear without an account takeover
Calendar systems can receive invitations from outside your organization, third-party scheduling services, shared calendars, forwarded events, and applications that have permission to create events. Automatic invitation settings can also make an event visible before you have decided whether to attend. These possibilities explain why an unknown event is a signal to investigate rather than proof of compromise.
Compromise becomes more concerning when you also see evidence such as unfamiliar sign-ins, changed recovery details, sent messages you did not write, new forwarding rules, calendar events you did not create, or an application you do not recognize in connected-account settings. Report those indicators to the account provider or administrator even if the original invitation itself looked harmless.
