A remote-access trojan (RAT) is malware that can give an attacker remote control of an Android device or help transmit personal data and credentials without proper disclosure and consent. You cannot confirm a RAT from battery drain, heat, pop-ups, slowness, or one unfamiliar app alone. Those are general warning signs that justify an investigation, not a diagnosis.

Start with Google Play Protect, install every available Android and security update, remove apps you do not trust, and review account security. If suspicious behavior continues, test whether a third-party app is responsible in safe mode, then consider a factory reset or help from the device manufacturer. A reset erases local data, so treat it as an escalation rather than the first response.

What a remote-access trojan means on Android

Google’s Android Malware Policy describes a malware objective as enabling an attacker to “Enable remote-controlled operations for an attacker to access, use, or otherwise exploit an infected device.” In practical terms, a RAT is malicious software that may let someone operate or exploit parts of the phone from a distance. Malware may also transmit personal information or credentials without adequate disclosure and consent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That definition explains why a suspected RAT deserves prompt attention, but it does not provide a consumer symptom checklist that can prove an infection. Android phones can become slow because of storage pressure, a failing component, an operating-system problem, or an ordinary buggy app. Browser redirects can come from an unwanted notification permission or a compromised website. An unfamiliar app can be legitimate system software, a work-management tool, or malware. Diagnosis requires checking the app, device, and accounts together.

Remote access is not the same as remote support

Some legitimate accessibility, administration, and support tools request powerful permissions. The concern is an app that obtains those capabilities unexpectedly, hides its purpose, arrives from an untrusted source, or asks for access unrelated to what it claims to do. Review the app’s stated function, developer information, installation source, permissions, and Play Protect status before deciding what to remove.

Warning signs that warrant investigation

Google’s Android malware-removal guidance lists the following possible indicators. They are useful for deciding when to investigate, but none independently identifies a RAT.

What you notice Why it matters Why it is not proof of a RAT
Persistent virus messages or intrusive pop-ups Repeated warnings may be caused by an unwanted app, notification permission, or malicious advertising. Browser ads and deceptive alerts can occur without remote control of the phone.
An antivirus or security app stops working Malware may interfere with security software or its permissions. The security app itself may be broken, outdated, or incompatible with an Android update.
The phone becomes very slow or malfunctions Unexpected background activity can consume processor time, memory, or network resources. Low storage, a failing battery, an operating-system fault, or a normal app can produce the same symptoms.
Storage drops unexpectedly Unwanted downloads, logs, or other files may be accumulating. Photos, videos, cached media, and app updates also consume storage.
Browser tabs or ads keep returning A troublesome app or notification subscription may be recreating them. Website notifications and ordinary ad-supported pages can behave this way.
Unfamiliar redirects appear Redirects can indicate an unwanted app or altered browser settings. A compromised website, DNS issue, or ad network can redirect a browser session.
Chrome’s homepage or search setting changes without your action Unexpected setting changes deserve an app and account review. A browser reset, synchronization issue, or another user of the phone can also change settings.
Messages are sent from your accounts without you sending them This can indicate account takeover, an app misusing access, or a device compromise. It does not establish that a RAT is present; secure the account as well as the phone.

Permissions that deserve extra scrutiny

Check permissions when they are unexpected or unnecessary for an app’s stated purpose. Be particularly careful with accessibility access because an accessibility service can observe and interact with what is displayed on the screen. Google’s Play Protect warning guidance uses this exact warning for a deceptive accessibility tool: “This app can request full control of your device and access your personal and financial info without your knowledge.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An accessibility request is not automatically malicious. Screen readers, switch access, automation, enterprise management, and other legitimate tools may need it. Investigate when an unrelated utility, game, wallpaper app, or sideloaded package asks for accessibility control, device administration, notification access, SMS, contacts, microphone, camera, or overlay privileges without a clear reason.

Do these checks before deleting anything

Protect accounts from a potentially exposed phone

If you suspect that passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information may have been exposed, use a separate trusted device for account changes. Change the password for the affected Google account and any other account used on the phone, review active sessions and recovery details, and turn on available multifactor authentication. For a bank, card issuer, or other financial service, contact the organization through the official app, statement, or website rather than a number shown in a pop-up.

This account work matters even if the phone itself is cleaned. A malicious app may have captured credentials before removal, and messages sent from an account can be an account-security problem rather than evidence of a persistent RAT.

Record what is happening

Note the app name, installation source, warning text, approximate start time, and which accounts or settings appear affected. Save screenshots only when doing so is safe and does not expose private information. This record helps you identify the triggering app and gives a manufacturer or account provider useful details if escalation is needed.

Step-by-step removal and recovery

1. Check Google Play Protect

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Play Protect.
  4. Review the status and run the available scan if one is offered.

Play Protect checks apps when they are installed and periodically scans the device. It also checks apps installed from outside Google Play. When it detects a potentially harmful app, it may notify you, disable the app until it is removed, or remove it automatically. Keep Play Protect enabled.

If the suspected app came from a website, file manager, messaging attachment, or another source outside Google Play, enable the improved harmful-app detection option when Play Protect offers it. The exact wording and menu placement can change with Android and Play Store versions. Follow a Play Protect warning’s removal prompt rather than reopening an app that has been disabled.

2. Install Android and security updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look for System, Software update, or a similarly named update section.
  3. Check for the Android software update.
  4. Also check for the Android security update and Google Play system update, where your device exposes them separately.
  5. Install available updates, then restart if requested.

Manufacturers use different labels and locations, so the path varies by Android version and phone maker. Install updates over a trusted connection with sufficient battery or while connected to power. An update can fix a vulnerability or a malfunction, but it does not replace the app and account checks in this procedure.

3. Uninstall apps you do not trust

Google recommends removing apps that are unneeded, untrusted, or not obtained from Google Play. A common route on recent Android devices is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then See all apps (the label may differ).
  3. Select the app you are investigating.
  4. Review its permissions and source information.
  5. Tap Uninstall and confirm.

Start with an app installed immediately before the symptoms began, an app you do not recognize, or one obtained outside Google Play. Do not remove a system component merely because its name is unfamiliar; search the manufacturer’s documentation or ask the manufacturer if you cannot identify it safely. If the app is flagged or disabled by Play Protect, use the warning’s removal control.

4. Recheck powerful access after uninstalling

Open Settings and inspect the privacy or special-access areas available on your phone. Look for apps with accessibility access, device-administrator status, notification access, permission to install unknown apps, display-over-other-apps access, unrestricted battery use, VPN access, or access to SMS and contacts. Revoke access from an app that does not need it, then uninstall that app if appropriate.

Menu names differ by manufacturer, so use Settings search for terms such as accessibility, device admin, special app access, install unknown apps, and VPN. If Android refuses to uninstall an app, it may have device-administrator privileges. Remove that administrator privilege first, then return to the app’s information page and uninstall it. If you cannot safely revoke the privilege, contact the device manufacturer.

5. Secure Google and other accounts

Open Google’s Account Security Checkup and fix every issue it lists. Review recent security activity, signed-in devices, third-party access, recovery phone numbers and addresses, and saved payment or password information. Sign out sessions you do not recognize.

Use a separate trusted device if the Android phone may be recording keystrokes or displaying deceptive login screens. Change reused passwords on other services, and notify contacts if unauthorized messages were sent from your account. If financial information may have been exposed, contact the relevant bank or service through its official channel and follow its instructions for monitoring or replacing credentials.

6. Use safe mode to test for a third-party app

Google’s Android security guidance notes that if the misbehavior stops in safe mode, a third-party app is probably responsible. Safe mode temporarily loads Android without most downloaded apps. The method for entering it varies by manufacturer and Android version; use the phone maker’s instructions rather than a generic button combination that may not apply to your model.

Once in safe mode, check whether the pop-ups, redirects, unexplained messages, or other behavior continue. If the symptoms stop, uninstall recently added or untrusted apps one at a time, restarting normally after each removal. If the symptoms remain in safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the cause, and you should proceed to updates, account protection, and manufacturer support.

7. Factory-reset only when the evidence and persistence justify it

Google identifies a reset or manufacturer help as possible next steps when malware signs remain. A factory reset removes local user data and installed apps, so back up irreplaceable photos, contacts, documents, and authentication recovery information first. Do not back up an unknown app or restore every application automatically without reviewing what comes back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that you know the Google account credentials needed after the reset.
  2. Ensure important data is copied to a trusted destination.
  3. Record recovery codes and transfer authenticator accounts according to each service’s instructions.
  4. Open Settings and search for factory reset or erase all data.
  5. Read the warning, confirm the account and data consequences, and start the reset only when ready.
  6. After setup, install system updates before restoring apps.
  7. Reinstall only apps you recognize and obtain them from Google Play where possible.
  8. Run Play Protect again and review account activity.

A factory reset is a strong device-level escalation, not a universal guarantee about every kind of compromise. It does not undo a password theft that happened before the reset, and it cannot repair a compromised account by itself. Keep account-security work separate and complete it even after the phone has been erased.

Choosing the next action

Use the strength of the evidence, the effort and risk of the action, and the possibility of account exposure to choose the least destructive step that addresses the problem.

Situation Best next step Trade-off
Only generalized slowness, heat, or battery drain Install updates, check storage, review recent apps, and run Play Protect. These symptoms have many non-malware causes, so immediate erasure is disproportionate.
Play Protect flags an app Follow the warning to disable or remove it, then review accounts and permissions. This is stronger evidence than a vague performance complaint, but account exposure still needs separate attention.
An app is clearly untrusted or was sideloaded without a good reason Review its access and uninstall it. Removing one app is relatively low risk, but identify what data or credentials it may already have accessed.
Symptoms stop in safe mode Remove third-party apps added near the start of the problem. You must test and uninstall carefully to avoid removing a legitimate tool you still need.
Symptoms continue after app removal and updates Secure accounts, prepare a backup, and consider a factory reset or manufacturer support. A reset takes time and erases local data; support may be necessary if the phone cannot be safely controlled.
You cannot revoke access or remove the suspected app Stop using the phone for sensitive tasks and contact the manufacturer or a qualified support service. Professional help may be slower or paid, but it reduces the risk of experimenting with an app that retains control.

Common mistakes that make a suspected infection worse

  • Treating one symptom as a diagnosis: Pop-ups, heat, and slow performance are investigation triggers, not proof of a RAT.
  • Clicking a pop-up’s “clean” button: A deceptive alert may lead to another unwanted app or request. Use Play Protect and Android Settings instead.
  • Keeping a suspicious app for more testing: If an app is unnecessary and untrusted, remove it after recording the details you need.
  • Changing passwords on the possibly compromised phone: Use a separate trusted device when credential theft is plausible.
  • Restoring every app automatically after a reset: This can reintroduce the application that caused the problem.
  • Removing system packages at random: An unfamiliar package may be required by the manufacturer. Verify it before uninstalling.
  • Assuming a reset fixes accounts: Device cleanup and account recovery are separate tasks.
  • Ignoring accessibility or administrator access: Powerful access can be legitimate, but an unexpected request deserves a deliberate review.

When to contact the manufacturer

Contact the phone manufacturer when you cannot enter safe mode, cannot revoke administrator or accessibility access, cannot remove the suspected app, or still see suspicious behavior after updates and app removal. Use the model-specific support instructions for safe mode and reset procedures. Manufacturer support can also distinguish a software problem from a failing component or a device-management policy that prevents uninstalling an app.

Have your model, Android version, Play Protect result, app name, installation source, and a concise timeline ready. Do not share passwords or recovery codes with an unsolicited caller or with a pop-up claiming to provide support.

What a clean result should look like

After the chosen remediation, Play Protect should show no unresolved warning, unwanted pop-ups and redirects should stop, browser settings should remain as you set them, and no unexplained messages should be sent from your accounts. Check account activity from a trusted device and watch for renewed symptoms after reinstalling each app. If a specific app brings the behavior back, remove it and report the issue through the platform or manufacturer channel available to you.

The reliable approach is evidence-led: use Play Protect alerts and a clearly untrusted app as stronger signals than a vague glitch, take the smallest effective action first, and escalate when the behavior persists or the phone cannot be controlled safely.
