Be wary of any crypto investment that arrives through an unsolicited message, promises unusually high or guaranteed returns, or pressures you to send money quickly. Scammers may build trust first, show fake profits on a trading dashboard, and then demand more money when you try to withdraw. Pause, verify the person and opportunity independently, and never pay a supposed tax or release fee to unlock a suspicious platform balance.
How crypto investment scams usually work
Many schemes begin with an unsolicited social-media message, text, dating-app contact, or seemingly accidental message. The sender may build a friendship or romantic connection before introducing an investment, claiming special trading knowledge, or moving the conversation to a private messaging app.
The supposed opportunity may be hosted on a convincing but fake website or app. Its dashboard can display rapid gains that do not reflect money actually available to withdraw. Some operators permit a small early withdrawal to make the platform seem genuine, then push for larger deposits.

Other scams center on a token, trading platform, or decentralized finance (DeFi) project promoted in social-media posts or messaging groups. In a pump-and-dump, promoters hype an asset, encourage others to buy, and sell their own holdings after demand has pushed up the price. Later buyers can be left with an asset whose price falls rapidly. A Ponzi-style scheme may use money from new participants to create the appearance of returns for earlier participants.

When a victim tries to withdraw, an operator may invent a tax, fee, insurance charge, or account-release cost. A displayed balance or an earlier small withdrawal does not establish that a platform is legitimate.
Warning signs to recognize
- Guaranteed or implausibly high returns: Claims of large profits with little or no risk are a major warning sign. The CFTC puts it plainly: “But, there is no such thing as a risk-free transaction or a guaranteed money-making opportunity.”
- A personal contact turns into an investment pitch: Be cautious if a new online friend, romantic interest, or supposed accidental texter starts offering investment advice—particularly if they want to move the conversation to another app.
- Urgency, secrecy, or explanations you cannot verify: Pressure to act now, keep the opportunity private, or accept complicated claims without independent checks should make you step back.
- Social-media hype for an obscure token or DeFi project: Posts, anonymous accounts, group chats, and promotional apps are not proof of an opportunity’s legitimacy. Hype can help promoters attract buyers before selling their own holdings.
- An unfamiliar or imitative website or app: Check the exact domain and the identity of the firm or person independently. A misspelled address or suspicious investing app can imitate a legitimate service.
- A new charge to withdraw your money: Treat a demand for an additional tax, fee, or release payment as a reason to stop—not as a step toward receiving your balance.
- Registration presented as a guarantee: For a securities offer, you can check the seller through the SEC’s Investor.gov tools. Registration alone does not prove that an offer is safe, and fraud can still occur.

Checks to make before sending money
- Pause before acting. Do not let a stranger’s deadline, personal story, or claimed expertise determine when you invest.
- Verify the person, firm, and asset independently. Search names alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” or “complaint.” For securities offers, use SEC Investor.gov tools to check the seller, while remembering that registration is not a safety guarantee.
- Check the address and app yourself. Type a known web address rather than following a link supplied by the promoter. Compare the exact domain and verify the identity of the firm through independent channels.
- Understand what is being offered and how the claimed return is made. Do not invest based solely on testimonials, screenshots, celebrity endorsements, social-media posts, or a group-chat recommendation.
- Reject guaranteed returns and extra-payment demands. Do not send crypto because someone promises a return or says another payment will unlock profits or an account balance.
What to do if you suspect a scam
- Stop communicating and send no more money. Do not pay a supposed tax, insurance charge, withdrawal fee, or account-release cost to access a balance shown by a suspicious platform.
- Preserve the details. Keep messages, usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, website addresses, transaction dates and amounts, wallet addresses, and the names of any receiving platforms or financial institutions.
- Report the suspected fraud. Submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Include the contact and transaction information you saved.
- Contact the relevant exchange or financial institution promptly. Share the transaction details and ask what steps, if any, it can take.
Watch for recovery scams
After a loss, you may be contacted by someone claiming they can retrieve your cryptocurrency. A demand for an upfront fee or for wallet credentials is another serious warning sign. Recovery can be difficult; a promise to get funds back does not prove the person can do so.

How much does the historical loss data tell you?
In a May 2021 consumer alert, the FTC reported nearly 7,000 reports of losses to bogus cryptocurrency investments since October 2020, totaling more than $80 million. The same alert said people in their 20s and 30s reported $35 million in cryptocurrency losses among investment-scam losses. These are historical figures from that alert, not current estimates or a measure of today’s losses.
