No single phrase, formatting quirk, citation error, or detector score can prove that a Wikipedia passage was written by AI. The reliable approach is to combine several language clues with a claim-by-claim audit of the references, then check the article’s revision history. You can often identify text or citations that deserve closer checking, but authorship usually remains uncertain unless the editor has disclosed it or the history provides direct evidence.
What you can—and cannot—establish
AI-generated prose can resemble ordinary Wikipedia writing, and human editors sometimes produce the same polished, repetitive or formulaic style associated with chatbots. Conversely, AI-assisted text may be heavily edited until its original characteristics disappear. That makes stylistic analysis useful for triage, not proof.
A sound conclusion describes the evidence rather than accusing a contributor. Use terms such as possibly AI-assisted, contains warning signs associated with generated text or citation could not be verified. Reserve a stronger claim for a documented disclosure or other direct evidence.

Language and formatting clues to examine

Chatbot-style framing
Generated text may address the reader or announce its own output, with wording such as “Here is your Wikipedia article on” or references to an AI system’s knowledge boundary such as “Up to my last training update.” Those phrases are out of place in a finished encyclopedia article, but an editor could also have copied a draft and failed to remove them.
Formulaic transitions and repetition
Watch for repeated connectors—especially excessive use of “moreover”—and paragraphs that restate the same point with little new information. A sequence of similarly shaped sentences, generic section openings and conclusions that merely repeat earlier wording can be a sign of automated drafting. It can also reflect a novice editor, machine translation or an attempt to imitate encyclopedic style.
Polished but generic prose
Some generated passages sound grammatically flawless while avoiding verifiable detail. They may praise a subject in broad terms, use smooth but empty transitions, or make a complex topic appear uniformly certain. Prose that is unusually polished yet gives no precise dates, names, measurements or source-linked facts deserves comparison with the references.
Promotional language
Words such as “breathtaking,” “groundbreaking” or other enthusiastic descriptions can make an article read like marketing copy. A neutral article can quote promotional language when it is attributed, but unqualified praise is a reason to inspect both tone and sourcing.

Formatting quirks
Excessive em dashes, curly quotation marks, inconsistent punctuation, or a sudden shift in formatting may be clues. Formatting alone proves nothing: editors use different keyboards, templates and copy-editing conventions. Treat a cluster of quirks as a prompt to inspect the revision and citations, not as a verdict.
Use a combined-evidence test
Instead of counting “AI words,” compare four evidence categories. The table shows what each category can establish and what it cannot.
| Check | What to examine | What a positive finding means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work exists | Can you locate the cited book, article, report, web page or dataset in a publisher, library, DOI, ISBN or other independent record? | The reference is not obviously fabricated. | That the source supports the Wikipedia claim. |
| Bibliographic details match | Do the author, title, publication date, edition, journal, volume and page or URL details agree with the original record? | The citation identifies a real work accurately. | That the adjacent wording is a fair summary. |
| Claim is supported | Does the original source support the exact names, dates, quotations, quantities and causal statements in the sentence? | The citation is relevant and correctly represented for that claim. | That other uncited claims in the passage are accurate. |
| Several prose clues occur together | Look for chatbot framing, repetitive transitions, generic polish, promotional tone and formatting anomalies in the same passage. | The passage merits closer checking and a history review. | That a particular contributor used AI. |
The strongest practical signal is a combination of weak sourcing and multiple style anomalies. A well-sourced passage with an unusual tone may simply reflect an editor’s style; a fluent passage with fabricated or misrepresented references is a reliability problem regardless of how it was produced.

How to check whether a Wikipedia citation is real
- Copy the exact passage. Save the sentence or paragraph, including the citation number. Record the article title and the date you viewed it.
- Open the article’s revision history. Use the article’s “View history” tab, locate the revision that introduced the passage, and compare nearby edits. A current snapshot can hide whether text was added all at once, translated, rewritten or later corrected.
- List every citation attached to the passage. Do not assume one footnote supports an entire paragraph. Separate each factual statement and note which reference is supposed to support it.
- Find the original publication. Search the exact title and author, then try a DOI, ISBN, journal title, publisher catalog or library record. A dead link is not proof of fabrication; independent records may confirm that the work exists.
- Match the bibliographic facts. Check spelling of authors, title wording, publication date, edition, journal or book details, page numbers and the URL or identifier. A real source with altered details can still mislead readers.
- Read enough of the source to test the claim. Confirm the specific sentence, quotation, number, date or causal relationship. A reference can be genuine yet unrelated to the adjacent claim, or the article can overstate what the source says.
- Record the result at claim level. Mark each statement as directly supported, partially supported, contradicted, not addressed, or unresolved. Explain what you checked rather than assigning an overall “real” or “fake” label.
Common citation failures
- Fabricated reference: no independent record exists after searches using the title, author and publication details.
- Real but unrelated source: the work exists, but it discusses a different subject, period or population.
- Misrepresented source: the source contains a qualification, uncertainty or opposite finding that the Wikipedia sentence omits.
- Bibliographic mismatch: the author, date, title, page or edition in the footnote does not match the publication record.
- Overextended citation: one reference is attached to several claims, but supports only one of them.
How to compare a passage with its sources
Read the Wikipedia sentence and the source side by side. Check details in a fixed order so that fluent wording does not distract from factual differences.

Names and entities
Verify the spelling of people, organizations, places, products and institutions. Generated text can merge similarly named entities or attribute a statement to the wrong person.
Dates and chronology
Check publication dates, event dates and the order of causes and effects. A one-year error can change whether a source could have known about the event it supposedly describes.
Quotations
Search for the exact words in the original. Confirm that ellipses, brackets and translated wording have not changed the meaning, and that the speaker and context are correct.
Numbers and scope
Recheck quantities, percentages, sample sizes, geographic coverage and time periods. “Most,” “increased” and “caused” are stronger than many sources justify. Note whether a statistic applies to one study, one country or one month rather than to Wikipedia as a whole.

Causation and certainty
Distinguish a source reporting an association, proposal or opinion from one establishing causation. Generated summaries often turn cautious language such as “may” or “is consistent with” into an unequivocal conclusion.
What Wikipedia’s AI prevalence evidence actually says
An October 2024 study by Princeton University, as reported in Wikipedia’s overview, estimated that about 5% of 3,000 English Wikipedia articles created in August 2024 were AI-assisted. The precise statement is: About 5% of 3,000 newly created English Wikipedia articles in the August 2024 sample — Princeton University, 2024.
This is a sample of one month and one language edition. It is not a current prevalence estimate, does not identify which articles were assisted, and says nothing about the authorship of an individual passage. Do not convert it into “5% of Wikipedia is AI-generated” or use it to label a contributor.
Are AI writing detectors reliable?
Detector scores should be treated as one weak signal, if used at all. The AI-content-detection overview summarizes studies reporting both false positives and false negatives, with accuracy reduced after text is paraphrased. A detector may flag human writing, miss generated writing, or change its result after ordinary editing.

The overview also reports a 2023 evaluation of 14 detection tools in which all scored below 80% accuracy and only five exceeded 70%. That is a historical study result reported in an encyclopedia overview—not a current performance ranking for every detector or a guarantee about a particular score.
Why scores are especially weak for Wikipedia
- Wikipedia passages are often short, factual and edited by multiple people, leaving little stable authorial style.
- Copy-editing, translation and paraphrasing can remove the patterns a detector expects.
- Older human writing and non-native English can be flagged disproportionately by some systems.
- A score generally estimates whether text resembles a detector’s training examples; it does not identify a contributor or establish intent.
If you run a detector, preserve the exact text, tool date and settings, and report the result as an uncertain lead. Never use the score alone to request deletion, accuse an editor or declare a citation fabricated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical verification workflow
Use this sequence when a passage raises concern.
- Capture the evidence. Save the article title, section heading, exact wording, citation numbers and the revision URL or identifier shown in the history.
- Separate claims. Break long sentences into individual statements about people, dates, numbers, quotations and causes.
- Inspect the history. Compare the introducing revision with earlier and later versions. Look for edit summaries, reversions, translation markers or subsequent corrections.
- Audit each reference. Establish whether the work exists, whether its bibliographic details match and whether it supports the adjacent claim.
- Search independently when needed. Use the exact title, author, DOI, ISBN or publication record. Check more than one independent catalog or publisher record when a citation looks doubtful.
- Assess language only as context. Note clusters of chatbot-style framing, repetitive transitions, generic polish, promotional wording or formatting quirks, while recognizing that humans can write them.
- Classify conservatively. Use “supported,” “partially supported,” “citation could not be verified,” “source appears unrelated,” or “possibly AI-assisted.” State what remains unknown.
- Choose an appropriate next step. For an unsupported claim, seek a better source or propose a correction. For a suspicious citation, document the independent search. For uncertain authorship, discuss the evidence without making an accusation.
How to report concerns responsibly
Lead with verifiable facts: quote the sentence, identify the footnote, name the publication record you checked and explain the exact mismatch. “The cited article exists, but its results concern 2019–2021 and do not contain the quoted statistic” is actionable. “This sounds like AI” is not.
Keep authorship and content quality separate. A passage may be AI-assisted yet accurate after editing, or entirely human-written yet poorly sourced. Wikipedia’s normal processes—discussion, reliable sourcing, attribution, correction and revision review—address the reader’s real risk: whether the article’s claims can be checked.
English Wikipedia policy is time-sensitive
The AI-in-Wikimedia overview says the English Wikipedia adopted a speedy-deletion process for suspected LLM-generated articles in August 2025. It also says that in March 2026 English Wikipedia prohibited LLMs from generating or rewriting article content, with exceptions for copyediting one’s own writing and machine translation from another language’s Wikipedia.
These dates and rules describe the English-language project, not every Wikimedia site. Policies can change, and local projects may differ. Check the live English Wikipedia policy page and the relevant project’s current rules before relying on a deletion process or judging an edit. Policy suspicion is not proof that a particular passage was generated.
Decision guide: what your findings justify
| Finding | Reasonable description | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Unusual style, sources support the claims | Stylistic warning signs only | Suggest copy-editing if needed; do not allege AI use. |
| Source exists but details do not match | Bibliographic error or unreliable citation | Correct the citation or locate the authoritative record. |
| Source is real but unrelated | Citation does not support the adjacent claim | Remove, replace or rewrite the claim with an appropriate source. |
| No independent record found | Citation could not be verified | Document search terms and seek confirmation before calling it fabricated. |
| Detector flags the passage | One uncertain automated signal | Use source and history checks; do not treat the score as proof. |
| Several style clues plus unsupported or fabricated references | Passage warrants urgent editorial review; authorship still unconfirmed | Report the specific sourcing problems and let the project’s processes determine the remedy. |
Bottom line for readers
Spotting possible AI in a Wikipedia article is an evidence-collection task, not a visual or linguistic certainty test. Start with the exact passage and its revision history, verify every citation against the original publication, compare claim-level details, and use style clues or detector results only as supporting context. The most defensible conclusion is usually about what the source does—or does not—support, rather than who wrote the words.
