Do not try to prove that a message, voice, image or video was made by AI. Treat the advice as unverified until you independently confirm who sent it and whether the underlying claim is true. Pause, avoid links and unexpected calls, and never send money or sensitive information to a contact you have not verified through a separate, trusted channel.
Generative AI can make impersonation unusually convincing, but the safest test is still ordinary fraud prevention: resist pressure, verify identity and claims independently, and use official reporting and support routes.
Why AI-generated scam advice is harder to recognize
Generative AI lets criminals produce convincing fake images, voices, videos, social-media profiles and websites. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says scammers can even alter real-time video. A message may use a familiar logo, an employee’s name, a realistic voice or a video that appears to show a real person.

A genuine employee can be impersonated, a caller ID can be spoofed, and a website can be made to resemble a bank or government service. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned on July 20, 2026, about deepfake impersonation and advises checking surprising online media through known official channels or reputable news sources.

Visual oddities such as distorted hands, unnatural movement or strange audio can justify caution, but they are not a dependable detector. Modern generated media may lack obvious flaws, while legitimate recordings can look or sound unusual because of compression, lighting or a poor connection. Decide based on independently verified identity and behavior, not on whether you can spot an AI artifact.
AI also lets a criminal tailor a message from scraps of public information. A fake adviser may mention your job, a recent purchase, a family member or a local event. Those details can make the advice feel personal without proving the account belongs to anyone you know. Treat personalization as a reason to verify, not as authentication.
Stop before you follow suspicious advice
Scammers want you to act before you have time to think. Stop when a message or call:
- Creates urgency, such as “act in the next 10 minutes” or “your account closes today.”
- Demands secrecy or tells you not to consult your bank, employer, family or authorities.
- Threatens arrest, account loss, legal action or another immediate consequence.
- Promises a prize, refund, job, investment return or other benefit you did not expect.
- Insists on a particular payment method, including cryptocurrency, gift cards, cash, gold or a wire transfer.
- Asks for a password, one-time code, recovery phrase, identity document, remote computer access or other sensitive data.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a known name, logo, caller ID or employee detail is not enough because impersonators can fake each one. Put the device down, close the page or end the call. Do not reply merely to challenge the sender; a response confirms that your contact information is active.
A 60-second pause checklist
- Write down what the person wants you to do, pay or disclose.
- Ask whether you initiated the contact. If not, treat every link, phone number and reply address as untrusted.
- Check whether the request depends on urgency, secrecy or fear.
- Open a new browser tab or use a phone number you already trust to contact the claimed organization.
- Do not continue until that independent contact confirms the request through its own records.
Ask yourself three plain-language questions: “Is this really my bank?”, “Should I click this security alert?” and “Can an AI trading bot guarantee returns?” If you cannot answer through a separate authoritative channel, the safe answer is to stop. A legitimate organization can wait while you verify; a scammer benefits from keeping you in the original conversation.
Verify who is contacting you through a separate route
Use a channel the suspicious contact did not provide. Find the organization’s address or phone number on a website you type yourself, on a statement you already possess or in a trusted app. Do not use the link, number, QR code or “reply” path in the unexpected message.
Banks, payment services and government offices
Sign in through the institution’s known app or manually entered website address. Call the number printed on your card or statement, not a number in a text, email or pop-up. Ask whether there is actually an alert, transfer, case or payment request on your account. If the representative cannot see the event in the official system, stop following the original advice.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that a phone call is safer than a message. A cloned voice can sound like a bank employee, and a spoofed caller ID can display the institution’s name. End the call and place your own call to the number on your card or statement. Never read a one-time code aloud simply because the caller says it is needed to cancel fraud.
Employers, schools and online platforms
Use the organization’s internal directory, help center or a contact method you have used before. A request to buy equipment, move a conversation to a private app, share a login code or send money should be confirmed by a second employee or administrator through an independently obtained address.

Check the request in the normal account dashboard as well. An urgent direct message may not appear in the platform’s official notification center. If the supposed support agent insists that you stay on a private chat while you verify, treat that insistence as another warning sign.
Family members and personal emergencies
Call the person on a number already saved in your contacts. If the caller says they have a new phone, use another trusted relative or friend to reach them. Ask a verification question whose answer is not visible on public social media. A familiar voice is not proof of identity; voice cloning can imitate a relative or colleague.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not let an emotional emergency bypass verification. A request for cash, cryptocurrency, gift cards or account credentials remains unverified even when the caller sounds frightened or knows private family details.
Unexpected account or security alerts
Navigate to the service’s official app or website yourself and inspect notifications there. Do not click the alert’s link. If the account shows no matching event, change your password from the official site and contact support through its published channel.
Verify the claim, not just the media
Even after you establish that a real account sent the message, check what it is asserting. An authentic account can be hacked, and a real video can be edited or presented out of context.
For surprising images, videos and public statements
Search the claimed announcement on the relevant agency, company or public figure’s known official site. Check reputable news organizations for independent reporting. The FBI’s IC3 specifically recommends this approach for surprising online media. Compare dates, locations and wording; an old clip relabeled as a new emergency is a common deception.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLook for the original post rather than relying on a repost or screenshot. Confirm that the account is the organization’s known channel, then check whether a second independent source reports the same event. Do not forward a dramatic clip while you are still checking it; rapid sharing can amplify a false claim before corrections appear.
For documents, invoices and notices
Do not trust a PDF, letterhead or electronic signature by appearance alone. Ask the claimed organization to confirm the document number or case through its official system. Type the organization’s web address yourself rather than scanning a QR code embedded in the document.
Verify payment instructions separately whenever an invoice changes bank details or requests cryptocurrency. Use a previously known contact at the organization, not the contact information printed in the new document.

For links and websites
Inspect the domain carefully, but do not treat a familiar-looking domain as conclusive. Close the page and reach the organization through a bookmark you created earlier or through contact details from a trusted statement. A padlock only indicates an encrypted connection; it does not prove that the site belongs to the organization named in the message.

The FTC’s general scam guidance is more useful than trying to classify authorship. Common behavior includes impersonating a known organization, inventing a problem or prize, pressuring you to act immediately and directing you to a specific payment method. Those signs matter whether a human wrote the message, an AI generated it or a criminal combined both.
Do not let a polished script lower your guard. Grammar, personalized details and a calm professional tone can all be generated from public information. Conversely, spelling mistakes do not prove fraud; legitimate organizations can send imperfect messages. Focus on the request, the pressure and the independent evidence.
The FTC’s consumer guidance says it will never threaten you, tell you to transfer money to “protect it,” or direct you to withdraw cash or buy gold and hand it to someone. A demand that conflicts with normal procedures is a reason to end the contact and call the organization yourself.
Treat guaranteed AI investment advice as a warning
Claims that an AI trading bot, signal service or crypto-arbitrage system can guarantee returns are a major danger sign. The CFTC states: AI technology can’t predict the future or sudden market changes.
No label such as “machine learning,” “quantum,” or “autonomous” changes that limitation.
Before considering any investment, investigate the company and trader independently. Check regulatory and disciplinary information where applicable, verify that the people named actually work there, and reverse-image-search profile photographs of key personnel. A profile that exists only on social media, refuses a video call through a known channel or asks for cryptocurrency sent to a personal wallet should not receive money.
The CFTC advises not sending cryptocurrency or other assets, or sharing sensitive information, with people known only online or by phone. Never transfer funds to “unlock” profits, pay taxes in advance to release a withdrawal, or move money to a so-called safe account because a caller claims your bank is compromised.
Be wary of fabricated performance dashboards, testimonials and screenshots. They show what the promoter wants you to see, not independently documented returns. Take time to read written risk disclosures and verify registration through records you locate yourself; do not rely on a link supplied by the promoter.
Handle fake computer-security warnings safely
An unexpected pop-up saying that your computer is infected and displaying a phone number is a classic tech-support scam pattern. The FTC warned in April 2025 that criminals may impersonate familiar companies and use a false infection alert to sell bogus help.

- Do not call the number in the pop-up and do not click its links.
- Close the browser window. If it will not close, quit the browser using the operating system’s normal controls or restart the device.
- Update the device’s security software and run a scan from the installed, trusted program.
- If you still need assistance, use the device maker’s or security provider’s official website, or a trusted local professional whose contact details you obtained independently.
- If you gave a stranger remote access, disconnect the device from the internet, contact a trusted technician, change passwords from a clean device and monitor financial accounts.
Real security software does not require you to obey a random pop-up’s phone number. A warning that blocks the screen, counts down, or demands immediate payment is designed to prevent careful checking.
Choose the right verification route
The best route depends on what the message is about. Compare options by three questions: Did you obtain the contact detail independently? Is the confirming source authoritative for this claim? Does the step expose you to clicking, paying, installing software or disclosing data?
| Situation | Independent route | Authoritative confirmation | Exposure to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account, payment or login alert | Known app, statement or saved number | The provider’s account records or fraud team | Links, one-time codes, password or transfer |
| Government, legal or tax demand | Agency website entered manually or a document already on file | The agency’s published records and contact center | Immediate payment, secrecy or threats |
| Family emergency | Previously saved number or a trusted intermediary | The person or someone who knows them offline | Cash, cryptocurrency or personal data |
| Public video or announcement | Known official channel and reputable reporting | Original account, agency record or multiple independent reports | Sharing before checking context |
| Computer infection warning | Device maker or security provider’s official help page | A scan from trusted security software | Pop-up phone number, remote access or payment |
| Investment opportunity | Regulatory and company records found independently | Verified registration and documented risk disclosures | Guaranteed returns, crypto deposits or advance fees |
The safest route is usually the one with the least exposure: viewing an account through a known app is safer than clicking a new link; asking a provider to confirm a case is safer than sending a document; and reading an official announcement is safer than downloading an attachment from an unknown sender.

- Stop communicating through the suspicious account, number or website. Do not negotiate or promise another payment.
- Contact the affected bank, card issuer, payment service, employer or platform through its official contact details. Ask whether a transfer can be stopped, a payment reversed or an account secured.
- Change exposed passwords from a clean device. Do not reuse the old password, and revoke unfamiliar sessions or connected applications.
- If you disclosed a one-time code, tell the provider immediately; the code may have allowed an attacker to take over the account.
- Preserve messages, email headers, phone numbers, web addresses, wallet addresses, receipts and transaction times. Do not edit screenshots.
- Run a security scan if software was installed or remote access was granted, and seek qualified help through a trusted route.
- Report the incident to the appropriate official agency. A report may help investigators, but no agency can promise that your money will be recovered.
Tell the bank exactly when the transfer occurred and how you authorized it. Keep case numbers and follow-up instructions. If an identity document was exposed, ask the relevant provider what protective steps it recommends; do not send additional documents to an unsolicited “recovery” service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where to report in the United States
For a consumer scam, the FTC accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For suspected commodity or derivatives fraud, the CFTC provides cftc.gov/complaint. Internet-enabled crime can be reported to the FBI’s IC3 at ic3.gov. Use the agency that fits the incident, and check the current official site for instructions in your jurisdiction.
These routes are U.S.-specific. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection authority, financial regulator and law-enforcement reporting service. The practical steps—pause, verify separately, avoid unexpected payments and preserve evidence—apply regardless of location.
How widespread is impersonation fraud?
An FTC release published in June 2026 reported $3.5 billion in consumer-reported losses to imposter scams during 2025. That figure covers imposter scams generally; it is not an AI-scam total and should not be read as a complete measure of losses or as proof that every report involved generated media.
Why an AI detector should not make the decision
Detection tools can produce false positives and false negatives, especially after a file has been compressed, edited, translated or re-recorded. Official guidance from the FTC, CFTC and FBI emphasizes independent verification of identity and claims rather than a validated detector for scam advice authorship. Even a result saying “probably human” cannot tell you whether the request is honest.

Use a simple decision rule: if the contact is unexpected, the request is consequential, and you cannot confirm it through a separate authoritative route, do not follow the advice. You do not need certainty that content is AI-generated to refuse a payment, close a pop-up or report a suspicious account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I identify an AI scam by looking for distorted hands or strange audio?
Those clues may justify caution, but they are unreliable. Generated media can look natural, and genuine recordings can have glitches from compression or poor connections. Verify the sender and claim through a separate official channel instead.
Should I click a security alert link to check whether my account is affected?
No. Open the provider’s known app or type its official web address yourself. Use a phone number from your card, statement or trusted records, not the link or number in the alert.
Can an AI trading bot guarantee returns?
No. The CFTC says AI technology cannot predict the future or sudden market changes. Guaranteed returns, crypto deposits and requests for advance fees are warning signs; investigate the company and trader independently.
What should I do if a relative calls with an emergency and asks for money?
End the call and contact the relative on a number already saved in your contacts. If necessary, use a trusted intermediary and ask a question whose answer is not public. A familiar voice can be cloned.
What if I already gave a scammer a password or one-time code?
Contact the affected provider through its official channel immediately, change the password from a clean device, revoke unfamiliar sessions and monitor accounts. Preserve messages and transaction details, then report the incident.
Where can I report an AI-enabled scam in the United States?
Report consumer scams to ReportFraud.ftc.gov, suspected commodity or derivatives fraud to cftc.gov/complaint, and internet-enabled crime to ic3.gov. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection and law-enforcement services.
The Bottom Line
Do not spend your time trying to prove whether suspicious advice was written or voiced by AI. Pause, reject pressure, verify the identity and claim through a channel you found independently, and refuse money, access or sensitive data until that verification succeeds.
