Do not try to identify AI by grammar alone. Generative AI can make phishing messages fluent, translated and personalized. Instead, verify the sender’s complete address, the destination of every link, the request’s urgency and whether the story fits an account or transaction you actually have. Open the organization’s site from a bookmark or a manually typed address, or call a number obtained independently.
Why AI makes phishing harder to recognize
Traditional advice often starts with spelling mistakes and awkward wording. That remains useful when present, but it is no longer a dependable test. Criminals use generative AI to produce large volumes of convincing text, translate messages, imitate business language and personalize social-engineering attempts. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center says criminals use AI-generated text to appear believable in social engineering, spear phishing and financial-fraud schemes. It also describes AI-generated social-media profiles, fraudulent investment sites and AI-powered chatbots that encourage malicious clicks.
Google’s October 2, 2024 guidance makes the same practical point: polished communications can still be scams, even though some messages continue to contain misspellings, poor grammar or mismatched fonts. A professional tone proves only that the message was edited well. It does not prove who sent it.

No authoritative percentage establishes how much phishing is AI-generated. Treat “written by AI” as a possibility you generally cannot prove from the message itself. Your decision should be based on identity, context, destination and independent confirmation.

The fastest safe decision
When an unexpected message asks you to sign in, pay, open a file, approve a transfer or disclose a code, use this sequence before doing anything else:
- Pause. Do not respond, click or open an attachment while the message is creating pressure.
- Check the complete sender address. Ignore the display name and compare the domain with the organization’s known domain.
- Inspect the destination without opening it. On a computer, hover over the link; on a phone, press and hold to preview it. A destination that is unrelated, misspelled or unexpectedly redirected is suspicious.
- Ask whether the story fits your life. If you have no account, order, payment or case with the named organization, the message has no credible context.
- Verify independently. Use a saved bookmark, type the official address yourself or call a telephone number from a statement or the organization’s known website.
If any check fails, leave the message alone and report it. Do not “test” a suspicious link in a browser or reply to ask whether it is real.
How to examine a suspicious email
1. Look for manufactured urgency
“Act now,” “your account will close today,” “payment failed,” “verify your identity” and “respond within 30 minutes” are designed to shorten your decision time. Microsoft identifies urgent threats and penalties as a common phishing pattern. Legitimate organizations may have deadlines, but an unexpected demand should still be verified through a channel you select yourself.
Urgency is especially risky when combined with a request for a password, one-time code, payment, gift card, bank transfer or change to payroll or supplier details. A message can be perfectly written and still use the same pressure tactic.
2. Reveal the real sender
Display names are easy to spoof. Expand the sender details and read the entire address, including the part after the @ symbol. Compare it with an address you already know from a statement, an earlier legitimate message or the organization’s site.
- A lookalike domain that changes one character, adds a hyphen or uses an unusual spelling deserves suspicion.
- An unrelated free-mail account is not an official business address merely because the display name says “Support” or “Billing.”
- A familiar name before the
@sign does not compensate for an unfamiliar domain. - Subdomains can mislead. In
login.example-attacker.test, the registered domain isexample-attacker.test, not the word “login.”
Do not rely on the visible name in a mobile notification. Open the message details only if doing so is safe, and never reply to the address as a way to verify it.

3. Check whether the request makes sense for you
Context is one of the strongest filters. If you have never used the named bank, delivery service, cloud account or employer, an unsolicited security alert is likely phishing. If you do have an account, that still does not authenticate the message: attackers commonly send generic notices hoping that some recipients are customers.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Compare the message with your own records. Did you recently place the order, request the password reset or initiate the transfer? If not, navigate independently to the account and inspect its notifications there. Ignore a password-reset message you did not request, as Google advises.
4. Treat links and attachments as untrusted
The FTC’s consumer advice is direct: do not click links or download attachments in unexpected messages. Hovering or pressing and holding can reveal a destination, but it is not an invitation to open it. An attachment can be dangerous even when its filename looks ordinary, and a link can lead to a convincing copy of a real sign-in page.
Use a bookmark you created earlier or type the organization’s address yourself. If the message claims that an invoice, shared document or voicemail is waiting, find that item through the organization’s normal app rather than through the email.
5. Do not use polish as proof
AI translation and editing can remove the clues people traditionally associate with scams. A message with natural idioms, consistent punctuation and a formal signature may still be fraudulent. Conversely, a real message can contain a typo or an odd layout because of a template or a rushed employee. Writing quality is a supporting clue, never the deciding test.

How to inspect a link without trusting it
Read the destination character by character
On a desktop, place the pointer over a link and read the status-bar address. On a phone or tablet, press and hold to display the preview. Do not proceed if the preview is hidden, shortened in a way you cannot expand safely or different from the organization you expected.

Look for:
- Lookalike spelling: inserted, removed or substituted characters.
- Unexpected top-level domains: a domain ending that does not match the organization’s normal address.
- Misleading subdomains: a trusted name placed at the far left while an unrelated registered domain appears near the end.
- Encoded or confusing text: long strings, unfamiliar characters or an address that obscures where it will actually go.
- Redirects: a link that first goes through a tracking or forwarding service and then lands somewhere unrelated.
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and a site; it does not certify that the site is honest. A scammer can obtain a valid certificate for a lookalike domain. The domain itself and the way you reached it matter more than the padlock icon.
Use an independent route instead
Close the message and open a fresh browser tab. Type the organization’s address from a card, statement or a bookmark you saved before receiving the message. Sign in only after confirming that address. For support, use a telephone number printed on a card or statement, not a number in the suspicious message.
How to recognize a scam website
Examine the browser address bar
Fake pages often copy logos, colors, layouts and sign-in forms from a trusted service. The address bar is harder to imitate. Read the registered domain from right to left before the first single slash after it. A brand word in a path or subdomain does not make the domain official.
Be cautious if the address:
- contains a spelling variation or extra punctuation;
- uses a domain you have never seen for that organization;
- switches to a different country or top-level domain without explanation;
- opens after you followed an unsolicited email, text or advertisement; or
- requests information that the organization normally does not need, such as a password, full payment details or a one-time authentication code on an unexpected page.
Assess what the page asks you to do
FTC and Microsoft guidance describe phishing pages that request usernames, passwords, payment information and other sensitive data. A page that demands all of these immediately, threatens account closure or insists that you disable browser protections is high risk. Leave it rather than trying a dummy password; submitting any data can expose you.
Watch for AI-assisted support tricks
Some campaigns use chatbots or live-chat-style windows to prompt a click, collect information or keep you engaged while the attacker escalates the request. A fluent conversation is not proof of a real support department. End the session and contact the organization through an independently found channel.
Clues that are useful—and clues that mislead
| Clue | What it can tell you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Misspellings, poor grammar or mismatched fonts | May indicate a low-effort scam; Google notes these clues still appear in many messages. | The absence of errors does not make a message legitimate. |
| Fluent, personalized wording | May reflect AI generation, professional editing or a legitimate template. | It cannot establish that the sender is genuine. |
| Urgent deadline or penalty | Common social-engineering pressure intended to bypass deliberation. | A real deadline is possible, so verify independently instead of assuming. |
| Familiar logo and branding | Shows only that the sender copied public design elements. | It does not authenticate the email, link or website. |
| HTTPS or a padlock | Indicates an encrypted browser connection. | It does not show that the domain belongs to a trustworthy organization. |
| Known company name in the display name | Identifies what the sender wants you to believe. | Display names can be forged easily. |
A practical verification workflow
Use this workflow for email, text messages, social-media direct messages and QR-code links. It is deliberately conservative because the cost of a few seconds of verification is usually lower than the cost of a stolen account.

- Stop the interaction. Do not answer, click, download or scan anything while evaluating the request.
- Record the claim. Note which organization, account, transaction or person the message mentions. This prevents the message from defining the only context you use.
- Inspect identity. Read the complete sender address and the destination domain. Compare both with independent records.
- Check your own activity. Review your account by opening the official app or site directly. Look for the alleged payment, order, security event or message.
- Contact the organization independently. Use a bookmark, manually typed address or trusted phone number. Ask whether the request is real without forwarding the suspicious link.
- Decide and document. If it is fraudulent, report it, delete it and tell affected coworkers or family members. If it is legitimate, complete the task only through the independent route.
What to do if you clicked
If you only opened the page
Stop interacting and close the tab. Do not enter credentials, payment data or personal information. Update your security software and run a malware scan, particularly if a file downloaded, the browser displayed a warning or the page asked you to install software.
If you entered a password
- From a clean device or a trusted, independently opened account page, change the password immediately.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it; attackers test reused credentials on other services.
- Enable multifactor authentication and review recent sign-ins, recovery addresses, forwarding rules and active sessions.
- Contact the real organization through a known channel and explain what happened.
If you entered payment or identity information
Call the card issuer or financial institution using the number on your card or statement. Ask what to freeze, replace or monitor. If government-identification details were exposed, follow the relevant identity-theft procedure in your jurisdiction. Keep copies of the message, address, timestamps and transaction records for the institution or investigators.
If you downloaded or ran a file
Disconnect the affected device from networks if you suspect malware, then use a trusted security product or your organization’s incident-response process to scan it. Do not rely on deleting the email as evidence that the device is clean. Work or school devices should be reported to the administrator promptly so other accounts and systems can be checked.
How to report a suspected phish
Report fraudulent messages to the organization being impersonated through its official abuse or security channel. In the United States, submit consumer fraud reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. FTC guidance also points people to the Anti-Phishing Working Group for suspicious emails and to SPAM (7726) for suspicious text messages. Your email provider may have a “Report phishing” control; use it instead of forwarding the message to friends.
Preserve the original message when possible so headers and the full destination can be examined. Do not forward a dangerous link in a way that causes someone else to click it; use the provider’s reporting function or an attachment format requested by the recipient.

| Control area | Questions to ask | Practical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Email detection coverage | Does the provider block known phishing and malware before delivery? | New domains, compromised legitimate accounts and targeted messages can evade automated rules. |
| Warning quality | Does the warning explain why a sender, attachment or destination is risky? | A warning is useful only if people read and follow it; a clean result is not a guarantee. |
| Link and domain inspection | Can users preview the real destination and see a clear domain warning? | Lookalike domains and redirects still require human judgment. |
| Malware scanning | Are downloaded files and web content scanned and updated regularly? | Scanning cannot prove who wrote an email or guarantee detection of a new threat. |
| Reporting workflow | Can a user report a message in one step and remove it from other inboxes? | Reporting after a click does not undo credentials or data already submitted. |
| Update cadence | How quickly do reputation lists and browser protections receive new threat information? | There is always a gap between a new campaign and its classification. |
| Device availability | Do protections work consistently on the phones, browsers and mail apps your household or team uses? | A control on one device does not protect a second device using a different app. |
Google reports that Gmail blocks more than 99.9% of phishing emails. That figure describes Gmail’s blocking performance, not the probability that any message left in your inbox is safe. Microsoft documents SmartScreen’s role in blocking known phishing websites, but a browser warning system likewise cannot replace checking an unexpected request.
Numbers that put the risk in context
Google reported in 2024 that more than 21 million people had fallen victim to fraud in the prior year, and that 42% of people surveyed said they had lost money to scams or had sensitive information obtained and used fraudulently. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 consumer alert said email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024. These figures cover fraud broadly, not a measured share of AI-generated phishing, so they should not be read as an AI-specific prevalence rate.
Examples of decisions in common situations
An unexpected password reset
You did not request it. Do not use the email button. Open the service from a bookmark, check security activity and start a reset there only if necessary. If the account shows an unfamiliar login, follow the service’s incident steps and change the password from the independent page.
A supplier requests new bank details
Do not reply to the email or use its phone number. Call a known contact using details already in your records and confirm the change through a second channel required by your organization. AI can make a fraudulent request sound exactly like a familiar business conversation.
A delivery notice asks for a small fee
Do not pay through the message. Open the delivery company’s official app or type its address manually and enter the tracking number there. A small charge is still a request for payment data and can be used to capture card details.
A colleague sends an urgent file
Verify through a separate conversation or call. An attacker may have compromised the colleague’s account, and a realistic writing style or familiar signature does not establish that the attachment is safe.
How teams can make verification easier
- Publish the exact domains, apps and phone numbers employees should use for sensitive tasks.
- Require a second channel for payment, payroll and supplier-account changes.
- Teach staff to inspect complete addresses and link destinations rather than grading grammar.
- Provide a one-click reporting route and explain what happens after a report.
- Practice a no-blame response so people report clicks quickly, before an attacker can reuse credentials.
- Keep browsers, operating systems, mail clients and security tools updated on every supported device.
These measures address the part AI cannot solve for an attacker: independent confirmation tied to a known process.

AI-generated phishing is not reliably identifiable by style. Assume a polished message can be malicious, then verify the sender’s real domain, the destination of every link, the request’s fit with your real activity and the organization’s identity through a separate channel. If you clicked, stop, secure the affected account from a clean route, scan the device when appropriate and report the incident promptly.
