Do not try to decide whether a post is true from its appearance alone. Treat visual or audio glitches as reasons to investigate, then verify the specific claim through official primary sources and credible independent reporting. Provenance records, labels and automated detectors can add context, but none is a universal truth test.
Start with the claim, not the image
AI-generated misinformation is misleading content that uses synthetic or altered media, a false caption, or both. The file and the claim are separate questions:
- Media question: Was this image, video or audio generated or materially altered?
- Claim question: Did the event actually happen as described, in the stated place and at the stated time?
A genuine photograph can be paired with a false date or location. A synthetic image can be used to illustrate a true event. An edited video may preserve a speaker’s real words while removing the context that changes their meaning. Therefore, finding an AI artifact does not by itself disprove the caption, and failing to find an artifact does not prove authenticity.
Intent is another separate issue. In Nadia Naffi’s UNESCO Ideas Lab essay, “Deepfakes and the crisis of knowing,” dated 1 October 2025 and updated 27 October 2025, misinformation is information spread unknowingly, while disinformation is spread with an intention to deceive. A media file rarely reveals the uploader’s intent, so describe what you can establish instead of assigning motive without evidence.

A five-minute verification workflow
Use this sequence whenever a post triggers a strong emotional reaction or makes a consequential allegation. The order matters: it prevents a convincing-looking file from becoming your starting assumption.
- Pause before amplifying. Do not forward, repost or quote the item while you are still evaluating it. Realism, outrage, fear and repeated sharing are not evidence.
- Record the exact claim. Write down who is said to be involved, what supposedly happened, where, when and what action the post asks you to take. Preserve the original post, account name and timestamp if possible; later edits can change the wording.
- Inspect the media for clues. Check faces, hands, text, lighting, reflections, motion, sound and backgrounds. Treat every anomaly as a prompt for further checking, not a verdict.
- Find the primary source. Navigate to an official website or verified social account by entering the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Do not rely solely on a link or screenshot supplied by the post.
- Seek independent corroboration. Look for reporting from credible outlets, public records, statements, livestreams, local authorities or original documents that address the same place, time and event.
- Check provenance and labels. Review available content credentials, platform labels, edit history and metadata, while remembering what those records can and cannot establish.
- Use detection tools only as supporting evidence. A detector score is an indication produced under particular conditions, not a laboratory proof about the post in front of you.
- State the result precisely. Say “verified,” “contradicted,” “manipulated,” or “unverified” only when the evidence supports that wording. Explain the decisive evidence and identify what remains unknown.
Visual clues in AI-generated images
Singapore government guidance, “Tips to Spot Real and Digitally-Altered Content,” dated 17 October 2024 and updated 12 October 2026, lists several irregularities that can warrant a closer look. These signs are practical prompts, not a validated diagnostic checklist.
Human features
- Faces may contain asymmetrical eyes, teeth that merge or repeat, earrings that do not match, hair that blends into skin, or hands with the wrong number or shape of fingers.
- Text on signs, labels, screens or clothing may be nonsensical, change spelling within one word, or use letterforms that do not fit the apparent language.
- Small objects can melt into one another at edges, especially where fingers hold a phone, tool or handle.
Geometry and the surrounding scene
- Lines in buildings, roads, fences or furniture may bend unexpectedly, and repeated patterns can break without a physical explanation.
- Reflections and shadows may point in incompatible directions or fail to match the objects casting them.
- Landscapes can contain impossible combinations of terrain, vegetation, architecture or weather. A familiar landmark may have incorrect proportions or neighboring features that do not exist.
Why a clue is not proof
Image resizing, recompression, low light, motion blur and ordinary camera artifacts can create similar defects. Conversely, a high-quality synthetic image may contain no obvious mistake at the resolution you can view. Zooming in can help you examine a detail, but it cannot establish when, where or why the picture was made. Move from the visual inspection to source and claim verification.
Clues in deepfake video
For video, inspect both individual frames and the way the sequence behaves over time. Singapore’s guidance highlights several possible indicators:
- Uneven facial resolution: the face or mouth may look softer, sharper or differently compressed than the hair, neck or background.
- Off lip-sync: mouth movements may not match the spoken sounds, particularly on consonants and rapid speech.
- Audio-visual inconsistency: the apparent direction of a voice, a speaker’s breathing, room echo or background noise may not fit the image.
- Blurred or distorted backgrounds: areas near a moving face can warp, smear or briefly change shape as the system tracks the subject.
- Temporal instability: teeth, jewelry, hairlines, glasses or skin texture may flicker or change between frames without a natural cause.
These signs can also result from a low-bitrate upload, a video call recording, frame interpolation or ordinary editing. A clean-looking clip may still be synthetic, and a flawed-looking clip may be genuine. Save the original-resolution file when possible and compare it with earlier uploads rather than evaluating only a screen recording.

Do not forget audio and captions
Generative tools can clone a voice or produce speech that sounds natural. Listen for abrupt changes in room tone, breath, pronunciation, emotional emphasis and the acoustic relationship between voice and surroundings. These are cues for checking, not a reliable standalone test; microphones, noise reduction and dubbing can produce similar effects.
Read the caption as evidence supplied by the publisher, not as a description guaranteed by the file. Ask whether it specifies a date, location and identifiable people. Search distinctive phrases in quotation marks, but check the original source rather than assuming the oldest search result is authoritative. A screenshot of a headline is not equivalent to the article or statement it claims to show.
Verify with primary and independent sources
Go directly to official channels
For a government announcement, company statement, election result, emergency warning or public-safety claim, type the organization’s web address yourself or use a bookmark. Check its official, verified social account rather than a repost. Confirm that the statement refers to the same jurisdiction, date, version and incident; similarly named agencies and old announcements are common sources of confusion.
Corroborate the specific proposition
Independent coverage is useful only when it tests the same claim. “An event happened” is not corroboration for “this person was responsible,” and a report from one outlet that cites the same unverified post is not independent. Prefer original documents, on-the-record witnesses, geolocated imagery, contemporaneous footage, court or regulatory records, and reporting that explains how its facts were established.
Check time, place and edits
Reverse-image results and repost histories can reveal an older event, but a match does not automatically prove that the current caption is false or true. Compare weather, season, signage, construction and landmarks with the claimed date and location. Watch for cropped frames, missing audio, speed changes and cuts that remove qualifying statements.

What provenance and content credentials can tell you
Provenance records describe a file’s source and history: for example, which application created or edited it and whether a sequence of signed changes was recorded. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) develops standards for this type of information. NIST’s report Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content: An Overview of Technical Approaches to Digital Content Transparency (NIST AI 100-4, published 20 November 2024 and updated 8 April 2026) distinguishes provenance and labeling from detection.
A valid credential can help answer “where did this file come from and what happened to it?” It cannot answer every question about the scene. A photographer can attach accurate provenance to a real image and then someone can add a false caption. A synthetic image can be exported without credentials, or its credentials can be stripped by a platform. Absence of a label is therefore not proof of human creation, and presence of a credential is not a truth stamp for the accompanying claim.
When a platform shows a synthetic-content label, read its wording and scope. It may indicate that a file was declared or detected as generated, not that the depicted event is fictitious. Preserve the credential details if you are documenting a high-stakes claim, and compare them with the original publisher and independent evidence.
Why automated AI detectors cannot settle the question
Detection systems look for statistical or forensic patterns associated with particular generators, edits or compression histories. Their output depends on the model, the media type, the resolution, the detector’s training data and any post-processing applied after generation.
NIST’s ongoing project “Guardians of Forensic Evidence,” created 21 May 2026 and updated 25 September 2026, emphasizes evaluation under realistic conditions, including generalization to content and generators not seen during development and robustness after post-processing. Those are central challenges: a detector can perform well on a benchmark yet fail on a new generator, a cropped image, a re-encoded video or an audio clip mixed with background noise. The project is forensic evaluation work, not an endorsement of a consumer detection product.

Use a detector, if one is available to you, as one input in a documented investigation:
- Record the tool, version, media file and settings used.
- Do not convert a probability or confidence score into “fake” or “real” without corroboration.
- Seek a second method or independent source, especially for accusations, safety notices, elections or financial decisions.
- Expect an inconclusive result when the file is short, heavily compressed, cropped or repeatedly reposted.
Compare verification methods by what they establish
| Method | What it can establish | How it can fail or be absent | Origin or truth? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual and audio inspection | Possible signs of generation, editing or mismatch that tell you where to investigate | Compression and genuine camera artifacts create similar signs; sophisticated synthesis may leave few visible clues | Usually clues about the media, not proof of the claim |
| Provenance credentials and labels | Recorded source, authorship assertions or editing history when the record is intact and trustworthy | Credentials can be missing, stripped, incomplete or attached to a file whose caption is false | Primarily media history; not a truth stamp |
| Automated detectors | A model’s estimate that patterns resemble material in its evaluation or training experience | Generalization, new generators, compression and post-processing can reduce reliability; results need realistic validation | Forensic signal about the file, not independent confirmation of the event |
| Primary and independent source checking | Whether credible records and witnesses support the stated time, place, people and event | Sources can be delayed, incomplete, inaccessible or themselves wrong; lack of evidence is not always disproof | Directly tests the factual claim |
How to write a responsible verdict
When evidence supports the claim
Use “verified” only when an authoritative primary source or several genuinely independent sources support the material details. State the source, date and scope. If the media’s origin remains uncertain, say so separately: a claim can be corroborated even when the particular image is not authenticated.
When evidence contradicts it
Use “false” or “debunked” when reliable evidence directly conflicts with the claim. Explain the contradiction—such as an official correction, a documented location mismatch or an earlier version of the same image—rather than relying on an unexplained detector score.
When the file is altered but the event is real
Describe the manipulation and preserve the narrower truth. For example, “The clip is edited and omits the preceding sentence; the underlying announcement is real.” This avoids replacing one misleading simplification with another.
When you cannot establish either point
Say “unverified” or “insufficient evidence.” Identify the missing record or unresolved discrepancy and avoid asserting the uploader’s intent. This is a useful result: it tells readers not to amplify the item while leaving room for new evidence.

Common mistakes that create false confidence
- Counting shares: popularity measures distribution, not accuracy.
- Trusting a single tell: six fingers, a strange shadow or a lip-sync error can be a clue, but none is conclusive.
- Assuming labels are universal: platforms apply different detection and disclosure rules, and labels may not travel with downloaded files.
- Treating metadata as immutable: screenshots and exports can remove metadata; metadata can also be edited.
- Checking only the account that posted it: the publisher may repeat an unverified claim. Find the original statement and independent evidence.
- Confusing “AI-generated” with “false”: synthetic illustrations, translations or reconstructions can accompany accurate information.
- Confusing uncertainty with proof of deception: an inability to verify a post is not evidence that its creator intended to mislead.
Geography, language and local guidance
The Singapore government guidance cited above is written for Singapore and includes local anti-scam resources. Its advice to use official sources is broadly applicable, but any SMS instructions, telephone numbers, agencies or reporting channels on that page should not be generalized to another country. In your own jurisdiction, use the relevant government, election, emergency-management or consumer-protection website and verify the address independently.
Language and cultural context matter as well. A detector or visual reviewer trained mostly on one language, script, skin tone, accent or media format may perform differently on another. Check translations against the original wording and ask a fluent, trusted source to resolve an ambiguous phrase before treating it as evidence.
A printable checklist
- Have I paused instead of sharing?
- Can I state the claim in one sentence with its person, place, date and alleged event?
- What exact media clues did I observe, and could compression or editing explain them?
- Did I locate the original file or statement rather than a screenshot?
- Did I visit the relevant official website or verified account directly?
- Did at least one independent source address the same factual proposition?
- What do provenance records or labels say, and what do they leave unanswered?
- If I used a detector, did I record its result without treating it as conclusive?
- Is my final wording “verified,” “contradicted,” “manipulated,” or “unverified,” with the evidence and remaining uncertainty clear?
When to stop sharing and seek specialist help
Escalate rather than speculate when a post could cause immediate physical harm, expose a private person, affect an election, trigger a financial transfer or accuse someone of a crime. Preserve the original URL, file, timestamp and relevant screenshots without redistributing harmful material. Contact the appropriate platform, public authority, newsroom standards desk or qualified fact-checking organization in your jurisdiction. If a suspected deepfake is being used for impersonation or fraud, use the official reporting and law-enforcement channels available where you live.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a content credential prove that a video is true?
No. A credential can document a file’s source or editing history when the record is intact. It does not prove that the caption is accurate or that the depicted event happened as described.
Should I call a post fake when I cannot verify it?
Usually not. Say that it is unverified or that evidence is insufficient, identify what you checked, and avoid claiming the uploader’s intent without evidence.
Are AI-detector scores reliable enough for accusations?
Not on their own. NIST highlights generalization and resistance to post-processing as continuing evaluation challenges, so a score should be supporting evidence rather than a verdict.
What is the difference between misinformation and disinformation?
Misinformation is spread without the sender knowingly trying to deceive; disinformation is spread with that intent. Intent is often impossible to establish from a media file alone.
