Do not rely on a single detector. Before sharing a suspicious image, video, audio clip or post, check for an AI disclosure and provenance record, trace the media to its earliest available source, and verify the claim independently. Content Credentials, watermarks, platform labels and detector results are useful clues, but none is a universal test of whether something is AI-generated or whether its claim is true.
The reliable way to check suspicious content
Use this order when a post might be synthetic, manipulated or misleading:
- Pause. Slow down when a post is emotionally provocative, urgent, unusually sensational or likely to affect health, safety, money or voting.
- Check disclosures and provenance. Look for a platform AI label, Content Credentials or another signed record describing where the file came from and how it was edited.
- Find the earliest available source. Search for older copies, the original account, the publisher and earlier dates. Compare the caption with the complete image, video or recording.
- Corroborate the claim. Check independent, reputable reporting, official statements, primary records or direct observations that do not depend on the same post.
- Resolve conflicts conservatively. If signals disagree or the origin remains unclear, describe the uncertainty and do not repeat a guess as a fact.
This process separates two questions that are often confused: how a file was made or handled and whether the accompanying claim is accurate and in context.

AI-content checks cover different evidence. A provenance record may document an export or edit; a watermark may indicate a participating generator; a platform label may disclose a user’s declaration; a detector may identify a statistical pattern; and source verification tests the story attached to the media. These are not interchangeable results.

A positive signal can have a narrow meaning. For example, a verifier that finds a supported OpenAI provenance signal indicates an association with OpenAI tools. It does not establish that the material is accurate, identify the author or owner, reveal the creator’s intent, show how much AI was used, or detect every other AI system. A negative result is equally limited: it may mean that the tool has no supported signal, that the file was changed, or that the system is outside the tool’s coverage.
Automated analysis also makes false-positive and false-negative errors. NIST’s identity-proofing guidance, written for organizations assessing remote identity evidence rather than ordinary social-media browsing, states: “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” The lesson transfers to consumer checks: use software as a lead, then inspect origin and context yourself.
Step 1: Look for labels and provenance
Platform AI disclosures
Some services add a visible label when a creator declares that an image, video or other post was made or altered with AI, or when the service detects a supported signal. Open the post’s details, “about” panel or media information rather than relying only on the label shown in a feed. Labels are platform-specific and may cover only certain formats, products or workflows.
Recommended Free Tools
An absent label does not prove human creation. A post may come from a service that does not participate, may have been uploaded before a labeling feature existed, or may have lost its signal during editing or reposting.
Content Credentials and C2PA records
Content Credentials, based on the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard, can attach signed information about a file’s origin and history. They are used for AI media, but also for camera, journalism and other production workflows. Therefore, finding credentials does not automatically mean the file is AI-generated. It means that a participating workflow has recorded provenance information.
Read what the credential actually asserts. C2PA guidance distinguishes assertions created by the signer from information gathered from an external or user-provided source. A signed record can be strong evidence that a particular workflow recorded an action; it is not a guarantee that every descriptive field is independently verified.

Why provenance disappears
Conversion, screenshots, social-platform processing, cropping, compression, noise and ordinary editing can remove or degrade metadata and visible watermarks. Unsupported products may never create a record. A missing credential is consequently inconclusive, just as a visible credential is not proof that the associated caption is truthful.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 2: Use a verifier without overreading its result
If you use a provenance verifier, start with the original export rather than a screenshot or a file downloaded after several reposts. For supported OpenAI checks, the provider recommends avoiding prior cropping or conversion because those changes can interfere with the signal. Preserve the original file, filename and download date so you know exactly what was checked.
Record the result in plain language:
- Supported match: the file contains a signal associated with a provider or workflow that the verifier recognizes.
- No supported match: the verifier did not find a signal it can interpret. This does not establish human authorship.
- Unreadable or altered: the file may have been transformed, damaged or exported in an unsupported format.
- Conflicting records: stop and investigate the original source, edits and dates rather than selecting the result you prefer.
Do not turn any of these outcomes into a claim such as “the detector proved it is fake.” The result describes the tool’s coverage, not the entire history of the media.
How verification methods differ
| Method | What it checks | What a positive result means | What a negative result means | Common weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signed provenance or Content Credentials | Recorded origin, actions or edits in a participating workflow | A signer recorded the stated assertion and the signature can be checked | No readable record was found; creation may still be synthetic or human | Sharing, conversion, screenshots and unsupported tools can remove the record |
| Embedded watermark | A pattern placed in media by a participating generator or service | The checked pattern may be associated with that provider | No detectable pattern; it may have degraded or never existed | Cropping, compression, noise and other transformations can weaken detection |
| Platform disclosure | A service’s label, policy or user declaration | The platform has attached a disclosure under its current rules | The platform did not label the post or the feature does not cover it | Coverage differs by country, product, media type and rollout stage |
| Source-history search | Earlier copies, dates, accounts and publication context | You can establish where the accessible copy appeared and how it changed | The earliest version was not found; absence is not proof of fabrication | Deleted, private or poorly indexed posts limit the trail |
| Claim and context check | Whether independent evidence supports the caption or narrative | Separate evidence supports the specific factual claim | The claim remains unverified or contradicted | A real file can still be paired with a false caption |
| AI detector or pattern analysis | Signals that may resemble generated or manipulated media | A statistical indication within that tool’s tested scope | No indication within that scope | False positives, false negatives and limited provider or format coverage |
Use the method that answers the question you actually have. Provenance is best for file history; a source search is best for origin and timing; independent records are essential for consequential claims.
Step 3: Trace the media to its earliest accessible source
Search the image or video itself
Use a reverse-image search or search distinctive frames, captions, visible signs and quoted text. Try several crops of a video frame, but retain the uncropped original for comparison. Look for the oldest dated result, not merely the first result returned. Compare resolution, aspect ratio, edits, logos, subtitles and surrounding text between versions.
Inspect the account or publisher
Open the source profile and check its posting history, stated location, previous coverage and links to primary material. A newly created account, recycled caption or account that repeatedly posts unrelated sensational content is a reason to demand stronger corroboration, not proof that a particular file is AI-made.

Compare caption and content
Read the full caption and watch or listen beyond the excerpt. A genuine photograph can be paired with a false date, location or event. A real video can be clipped to remove the sentence that changes its meaning. Check landmarks, weather, uniforms, signage, language and sequence against independent reporting or official records.
Build a small timeline
Write down when the alleged event occurred, when the earliest copy appeared, when the account posted it and when later versions were edited. A file that supposedly records a breaking event but appears online days earlier needs an explanation. Conversely, a late upload does not by itself disprove an older event.
Step 4: Corroborate the claim independently
For low-stakes entertainment, uncertainty may simply mean not reposting. For consequential material, require evidence outside the post:
- For emergencies or public safety, check the responsible agency’s notices and local reporting.
- For politics or public policy, consult official records, transcripts, legislation, election authorities or multiple reputable outlets with independent sourcing.
- For health, seek guidance from qualified medical authorities and do not make treatment decisions from an unverified clip.
- For financial claims, look for filings, company statements, regulator notices or records from the named institution.
- For alleged quotations, locate the complete speech, interview, transcript or recording.
Independent means more than two accounts repeating the same upload. If every article embeds the same post and adds no separate evidence, you have one source, not corroboration.
Visual clues are leads, not proof
Commonly cited clues include distorted hands, unreadable signs, inconsistent reflections, impossible shadows, mismatched lip movement, repeated textures, unnatural blinking and abrupt changes in image quality. Such anomalies can justify a closer check, but they also occur in ordinary photographs, low-light video, heavy compression, image resizing, camera artifacts and human editing.
Conversely, polished media can be synthetic without obvious defects. Modern generators may correct earlier visual errors, and a real recording can be manipulated through cropping, dubbing or selective sequencing. Treat appearance as a prompt to investigate, never as a verdict.

Checking text, audio and video
Text posts
AI-written prose cannot be reliably identified from tone alone. Generic phrasing, excessive headings, oddly confident claims or factual mistakes are reasons to verify the content, not proof of machine authorship. Search distinctive sentences, inspect cited documents and confirm names, dates and numbers in primary sources. An accurate human post and an inaccurate AI post require the same factual check.
Audio
Listen for abrupt room-tone changes, unnatural breaths, repeated phonemes or a mismatch between the speaker and the claimed recording conditions. These are investigative clues. Compare the clip with longer recordings, official transcripts and the speaker’s verified channels, and be especially cautious about calls or voice messages requesting money or credentials.
Video
Check the complete sequence, frame continuity, shadows, reflections, mouth movement, background signage and audio alignment. Search keyframes and compare upload dates. A short excerpt can be authentic but misleading even when no synthetic alteration is present.
Images
Inspect edges, text, repeated patterns, perspective and reflections, then search the image in multiple crops. Metadata can help when present, but social networks frequently strip it. A clean metadata panel is not evidence that a picture was made by a camera.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What labels and law can—and cannot—tell you
Labeling rules vary by platform and jurisdiction. In the European Union, the European Commission says the AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The rules address machine-readable marking by providers and disclosure duties for deployers in specified situations, including certain deepfakes and some AI-generated or manipulated text of public interest, subject to the regulation’s conditions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Those obligations do not mean every post worldwide will carry a label, nor do they make a labeled claim true. The Commission’s voluntary Code of Practice had about 190 signatory organizations by the end of July 2026. That is a signatory count, not a measure of platform-label coverage, detector accuracy or the amount of AI content online. EU compliance information is not a substitute for checking a particular file, and rules in other countries may differ.

When signals conflict
A label says AI, but the post looks real
Accept the limited proposition: the platform has identified or received a disclosure for AI involvement. Then verify what the post claims. AI assistance can coexist with a true event, a staged scene, a harmless edit or a misleading caption.
No label, but visual clues look synthetic
Save the original, search earlier versions and seek independent evidence. Do not announce that it is AI-generated solely because a hand, face or sign looks unusual.
Credentials show a camera workflow, but the caption is sensational
The record may support the file’s recorded origin without validating the story attached to it. Check location, date, edits and the event through separate sources.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A detector flags the file while the source is reputable
Check the exact detector scope, file version and transformation history. Ask whether the source has disclosed editing or synthetic elements, and look for the underlying primary material. A score is not a substitute for evidence.
Nothing can be verified
Use precise wording such as “the origin is unverified” or “the claim has not been independently confirmed.” Do not fill an evidence gap with either “definitely AI” or “definitely real.”
A practical sharing checklist
Before you repost, forward or embed the item, confirm:
- I paused instead of sharing because the post triggered urgency or outrage.
- I checked the available AI disclosure, provenance panel and file details.
- I know whether I inspected the original export or a transformed copy.
- I searched for an earlier version and compared dates, captions and edits.
- I inspected the source account or publisher.
- I distinguished the media’s origin from the truth of its caption.
- I found independent support for any consequential factual claim.
- I can state what is known, what is uncertain and what evidence supports each part.
If several boxes remain unchecked, the responsible action is to wait, ask for the original source or decline to share.

What to say when you warn others
Describe evidence narrowly. “This copy has a provenance record associated with a supported generator” is more accurate than “the whole story is fake.” “The earliest version I found predates the claimed event” is stronger than “it looks AI.” “No independent source has confirmed the claim” tells readers why they should hold back without pretending to know the file’s complete history.
When you update a post after new evidence appears, preserve the original wording and explain the change. Transparent uncertainty helps readers distinguish a corrected fact from a rumor that merely gained repetition.
