A “ghost chain” is an informal label for a blockchain with little durable, economically meaningful use relative to its claims, funding or token valuation. It is not a standardized status, and a high transaction count, large TVL figure or falling token price cannot prove the label on its own. The useful test is whether activity persists beyond launch incentives, supports applications and users, and creates value for the chain or its token.
What does “ghost chain” mean?
There is no accepted industry checklist that officially classifies a network as a ghost chain. The phrase is a critical shorthand: it describes a chain that appears active or valuable on the surface but has little evidence of sustained use with economic substance. A network can still be technically online, have developers, or serve a small community and fit that description in a broader market comparison.
To make the label meaningful, separate three questions that are often collapsed into “adoption”:
- Is activity or capital arriving? Transactions, active addresses, TVL and launches can show attention or assets present at a point in time.
- Does it persist? Retention after airdrops, token rewards, launch campaigns and speculative surges is more informative about durable demand.
- Who captures value? Application revenue, chain fees and token economics are different outcomes. A popular app can generate revenue without sending much value to its base chain or token.
Any one of these signals can look strong while the others remain weak. “Ghost chain” is therefore best treated as a hypothesis about the gap between a network’s visible metrics and its lasting economic role—not as a synonym for a chain with low activity or a dead network.

Why raw activity and TVL can mislead
Addresses are not people
Particle Network’s Web3 Fragmentation Report (vol. 2), published July 3, 2025, estimated daily active addresses in 2025 at about 2.7 million on NEAR, 2.6 million on Solana, 1.9 million on TRON, 1 million on BNB Chain, 855,000 on Polygon, 655,000 on Base and 519,000 on Sui. These are estimates using that report’s definitions, not a count of unique people. One person may control many addresses, and a single address can represent automation, a service or repeated incentive-seeking activity. Particle also associated substantial year-over-year growth on some chains with gamified apps, memecoin activity or low-cost stablecoin transfers; that does not establish that every transaction reflected organic demand.
Transactions do not reveal usefulness or retention
A high transaction count may reflect genuine recurring use, but it can also be driven by bots, low-cost transfers, gaming mechanics or short-lived campaigns. The count alone does not show whether users return, whether an application solves a persistent problem, or whether the activity produces revenue. Compare periods before, during and after a major incentive or launch rather than treating a busy day as proof of durable demand.
TVL is not a user count or a fee stream
Total value locked (TVL) measures the value of assets deposited in tracked protocols, not the number of people using them or the fees a chain earns. TVL can change because asset prices move, deposits migrate between protocols, or incentives attract temporary capital. Particle’s 2025 report estimated that the five largest chains held about 85% of total TVL in its 2024 comparison and 80% in its 2025 comparison; chains outside the top ten rose from 10% to just under 12%, peaking at 13.3%. Those are Particle’s estimates and definitions. Its conclusion was that liquidity remained concentrated despite the proliferation of chains—not that every smaller chain lacked users.

Do metrics persist when incentives fade?
They sometimes do, but the available figures do not justify assuming that they will. Particle described airdrops as a prevalent way to promote chains and temporarily boost usage metrics in 2024. In its 2025 account, airdrops had become less popular and strong on-chain metrics were again difficult to generate. That is a reason to examine what happens after incentives recede, not proof that all incentive-driven activity is fake.
For a specific chain or application, look for a sustained pattern rather than a single before-and-after snapshot:
- Compare active addresses or users across multiple periods, noting changes in how the metric is defined.
- Check whether returning activity remains after reward campaigns end; distinguish repeat use from a short burst of new addresses.
- Review transactions alongside their likely sources, such as stablecoin transfers, games, trading or automated activity.
- Track TVL in a consistent denomination and account for token-price changes, incentives and migration between protocols.
- Check application revenue and chain fees separately, then ask whether either is recurring and tied to use.
- Look for continuing maintenance, product updates and developer work rather than inferring health from the chain’s launch or funding history.
These checks improve the quality of a comparison; none independently proves that activity is organic. Public metrics often cannot establish whether addresses belong to distinct users or whether participants would stay without incentives.

Can network use rise while the token falls?
Yes. Usage measures, fees and token returns describe different things. CoinDesk Research’s State of the Blockchain 2025, commissioned by Input Output Group and published December 19, 2025, with an update on December 30, compared eight selected ecosystems. In its comparison, seven of eight recorded TVL growth in native-token terms, four of eight recorded higher daily activity, and chain fees fell across all eight. The report also said most large-cap L1 tokens ended 2025 with negative or flat returns.
| Measure in CoinDesk Research’s comparison | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| TVL, measured in native-token terms | Growth in seven of eight selected ecosystems | Deposited value rose under the report’s measure; this alone does not establish more users, stronger dollar-denominated value or higher fees. |
| Daily activity | Higher in four of eight selected ecosystems | Activity did not rise in every ecosystem, and an activity measure is not a count of unique people or proof of retained use. |
| Chain fees | Lower across all eight selected ecosystems | Fees can diverge from TVL and activity; lower fees do not by themselves prove that applications or their users have no value. |
| Large-cap L1 token returns | Most ended 2025 with negative or flat returns | Price performance is not the same as network use or a complete valuation analysis. |
One example in that report’s year-over-year comparisons was Avalanche: TVL was up 156.25%, while native-token performance was down 61.56% and chain fees were down 13.01%. The figures illustrate a divergence between measures, not proof that the token was undervalued or in a bubble. The report covers eight selected ecosystems, is sponsored by Input Output Group and uses its own comparison period and methodology; it should not be read as a census of all chains.
Application revenue, chain fees and token value are separate
An application can attract users and earn revenue while paying relatively little to its base chain. A chain can collect fees without its token capturing all the resulting value. Whether a token benefits depends on its specific design and on how activity connects to demand for the token—for example, through fees, staking or other mechanisms. The metrics above do not answer that token-specific question. A value-capture claim needs evidence about the actual mechanism, the amount of value it channels and whether that mechanism is durable; network activity alone is not enough.
What shutdown announcements reveal—and what they do not
DefiLlama’s August 18, 2026 analysis reported 100 projects announcing a shutdown during 2026, including 40 announcements in the 90 days preceding publication. It identified L1 and L2 chains as the largest shutdown cohort by category and lack of product-market fit as the most common stated reason. The figures count shutdown announcements under DefiLlama’s inclusion criteria, not a verified count of chains that became technically unusable. Some projects pivot or migrate, and the analysis excludes certain projects that announced shutdowns in 2025 and ceased operations in 2026.

DefiLlama said the projects in its analysis had collectively raised about $1 billion and generated $250 million in lifetime fees. It also cautioned that, in this small sample, money raised showed little correlation with success or longevity. These numbers describe the projects in that bounded analysis; they are not a failure rate for Web3, proof that funding is futile, or a measure of current chain activity.
A shutdown announcement is a useful prompt to check a project’s operational status: whether validators or infrastructure remain available, whether applications still function, whether users are being directed to migrate, and whether development or support continues. It does not, by itself, settle whether the chain is dead or whether its token has no value.

Black Mountain Investment Group’s February 28, 2025 report, Ghost Blockchains & Cryptocurrencies, asserted that fewer than 20 chains had more than 10,000 daily active users and described 99% of chains and cryptocurrencies as having few retained users. Because the report’s approximate estimates were attributed generally to Glassnode and DefiLlama and are not independently verified here, those headline figures should not be treated as an authoritative market-wide count. A precise claim about how many chains are “ghosts” would require a defined universe of chains, a consistent retained-user method and a stated threshold—none is established by the informal label itself.
Is the token bubble claim measurable?
“Token bubble” is a thesis, not a conclusion established by the metrics above. A divergence between activity, TVL, fees and token returns can identify a question worth investigating; it cannot by itself prove that a token is overvalued. A valuation argument would need to specify the token’s value-capture mechanism and support its assumptions about future demand, supply, risk and alternatives. Neither a busy chain nor a falling token price settles that argument.
