A genuinely good deal is not the biggest percentage-off label. It is the exact product that meets your must-have needs at a competitive total cost, sold by a seller whose return, warranty and marketplace-protection terms you can accept. Judge the product, price, seller and future ownership costs together.
The process below follows consumer guidance from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It works for phones, laptops, televisions, smart-home devices, kitchen appliances, lighting and most other gadgets.
What “good deal” should mean
A discount is only one input. A low price on the wrong configuration, a unit missing essential accessories, or a listing with no practical return route is not a saving. The FTC advises shoppers to set a budget, identify must-have features, compare products and sellers, read several reviews and check the complete terms before buying. Use this definition:
- Fit: the model performs the jobs you actually need, with your must-have features.
- Price: the complete checkout total is competitive for the same model and configuration.
- Trust: the seller, listing, return route and warranty are acceptable.
- Ownership: expected energy, consumable, subscription, repair and accessory costs do not erase the initial saving.
No universal percentage-off threshold proves a bargain. A 50% reduction can still be poor value, while a small reduction on a durable product with better coverage can be worthwhile.

1. Define the purchase before looking at discounts
Set a total budget
Decide the maximum amount you can spend, including delivery, taxes, required accessories and any subscription needed for normal operation. Keep a separate figure for optional extras so a sales page cannot turn a necessary item into an “add-on.” If the purchase is financed, compare the total repayment rather than only the advertised monthly amount.
Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves
Write the requirements before opening deal pages. For a laptop, that might be a particular operating-system compatibility, memory capacity, port type and battery expectation. For a refrigerator, it could be width, door configuration and an ice-maker requirement. For a smart camera, local recording may be essential if you do not want a recurring cloud fee.
The FTC puts this distinction plainly: “Especially if you’re buying gadgets, know what your ‘must-have’ features are vs. those that are just nice to have.” A cheap model that fails one must-have is the wrong product, not a good deal.

Rank lower-priority specifications. You may accept a different finish, a smaller storage capacity or a previous-generation processor if performance and support still meet your needs. This ranking lets you compare legitimate alternatives without allowing a dramatic discount to change the job the product must do.
2. Verify that every offer is the same product
Compare the exact model number, regional version, storage or memory, color when it changes the package, included accessories, software bundle and warranty source. Product names are often reused across generations; a headline may describe a family while the small print identifies an older or lower specification.

Save a screenshot or copy the model number before checkout. It makes later price and specification comparisons reliable and gives you evidence if the delivered item differs from the listing.

3. Compare the complete checkout cost
Start with the item price, then add every compulsory charge. Include shipping, taxes shown at checkout, required accessories, installation, delivery to the room, recycling fees, subscription charges and currency-conversion or payment fees where applicable. Subtract a coupon only when you have confirmed its eligibility and expiry.

Compare totals for the same delivery speed and service level. “Free shipping” is not free if the offer requires an unwanted membership, while a paid installation service may be worthwhile for a heavy appliance. Keep one-time costs separate from recurring charges so a low introductory price does not hide the longer commitment.
4. Check the seller and listing, not just the price badge
On a marketplace, investigate the individual seller even when the platform is familiar. Look for recent feedback across more than one source, a verifiable contact method, clear dispatch information and a stated return process. Reviews and seller ratings can be fake or misleading, so a single star score is not proof of quality.
Inspect photographs closely. Generic catalogue images, inconsistent backgrounds, stock photos for a supposedly used item, missing serial-number pictures and descriptions that avoid the actual condition are warning signs. Ask the seller what is included and request photos of the exact unit when the condition matters.
Understand the marketplace’s protection before paying: what deadlines apply, whether you must contact the seller first, which defects qualify, who pays return shipping and whether the platform can intervene. Protection varies by marketplace and transaction.

The FTC warns: “If a seller lists an expensive item for a very low price, it might be fake.” Treat an unusually low price as a reason to verify authenticity, not as evidence that you found an exceptional bargain. Confirm the seller’s identity, payment method and return address; avoid pressure to pay outside the platform; and do not send extra money for supposed customs, insurance or release fees unless the charge is clearly part of the legitimate checkout.

5. Use reviews as evidence, not as a verdict
Read several recent reviews from independent sources and look for details that match your intended use. Prioritize long-term reliability, noise, heat, battery degradation, app support, repairability and real measurements over unverified praise. Give more weight to reviews that identify the exact model and test conditions.
Separate product performance from seller service. A review complaining about late delivery does not establish that the appliance is inefficient, while a review of a different storage capacity may not apply to your configuration. Look for recurring patterns rather than one dramatic account, and check the date because firmware, included software and manufacturing revisions can change.
6. Read return and warranty terms before paying
Return policy questions
- How many days do you have, and when does the clock start?
- Is the item eligible after opening, activation or installation?
- Who pays return shipping, and is a restocking fee deducted?
- Must you use a particular carrier or obtain authorization first?
- When and how is the refund issued?
Warranty questions
- How long does coverage last, and who provides it: manufacturer, seller or marketplace?
- What defects and parts are excluded?
- Does the warranty apply in your country and to refurbished or used units?
- Is the remedy repair, replacement, credit or a refund?
- Who pays diagnostic, shipping and labor costs?
- What evidence, registration or maintenance records are required?
The FTC’s July 2023 warranty guide notes that a good warranty can be a reason to choose one product over another. It also explains that implied-warranty rules can vary by state, so U.S. buyers should check the law applicable to their location. Do not assume a manufacturer warranty transfers with a used item or covers damage caused by installation, accidents or unauthorized repairs.

An extended plan is not automatically valuable simply because the product is expensive.
7. Treat refurbished, open-box and used labels as incomplete descriptions
Condition labels do not have one universal meaning. The FTC’s November 2024 marketplace guidance cautions that terms such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is” and “close-out” may indicate an item that is not in top condition.
Before buying, ask four specific questions:
- What exactly is included, including the original charger, batteries, manuals and proprietary parts?
- What condition is the actual unit in, and are there cosmetic or functional defects?
- Who handles a return, diagnosis and repair if it fails?
- What warranty applies, for how long, and what exclusions or fees apply?
Prefer a listing that defines its grading standard, identifies testing performed and states the battery or consumable condition when relevant. A lower price compensates for risk only when you understand that risk and have a workable remedy.

8. For home gadgets, calculate ownership cost
Appliances that use electricity or gas
Purchase price can be a small part of the cost of owning a refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, air conditioner or water heater. The FTC’s For the Home guidance directs shoppers to the appliance’s EnergyGuide label. Use the label to compare estimated energy use with similar models; do not substitute an unverified savings percentage.
Also check installation requirements, filters, vents, water lines, replacement parts, service availability and noise. A slightly cheaper appliance that needs a costly electrical upgrade or proprietary consumables may have the higher total cost.
Lighting
For bulbs and fixtures, the FTC points to Lighting Facts labels. Compare brightness, color characteristics, estimated energy use and life information for equivalent products. Confirm base type, dimensions, dimmer compatibility and indoor/outdoor rating before treating a multipack discount as savings.
Connected home products
Include required hubs, cloud subscriptions, replacement batteries, storage plans and compatibility with your existing platform. Check how the device behaves if the service ends or the internet is unavailable. A device that cannot perform its essential function without a recurring fee should be evaluated on that recurring cost, not its first-year sale price.

Score each offer only after collecting the facts. You can use a simple pass/fail gate rather than pretending that every factor has the same value.
- Need gate: Does the exact model satisfy every must-have requirement?
- Identity gate: Do model number, configuration, condition and included items match the comparison?
- Cost gate: Is the complete checkout total, plus documented recurring cost, within budget?
- Trust gate: Can you verify the seller, payment route, return process and marketplace protection?
- Coverage gate: Are warranty duration, exclusions and claim steps acceptable?
- Ownership gate: For a home product, does energy, installation and consumable information support the value?
If an offer fails a gate, stop instead of compensating with a larger discount. If two offers pass, choose the one with the lower total cost or the stronger remedy for the risks that matter most to you.

10. Complete the purchase safely
- Open the seller’s full listing and record the model, condition, included items and stated policies.
- Calculate the checkout total with the actual delivery address and any required service.
- Read the return and warranty pages in full, including exclusions and claim instructions.
- Pay through a method that preserves the platform’s stated protection; do not move the transaction to an unverified channel.
- Save the receipt, order confirmation, listing, policy pages and communications.
- When the package arrives, photograph the box and serial number, inspect the contents before discarding packaging and test must-have functions within the return window.
- If the item is wrong or defective, contact the responsible party promptly and follow the documented authorization and shipping process.
The FTC’s online-shopping material discusses a “within 30 days” shipping rule in a specific legal context. It is not a universal promise that every transaction will arrive within 30 days; read the seller’s stated delivery commitment and the law applicable to your transaction.
Red flags that should end the deal
- The listing will not provide a precise model number or clear condition.
- The price is dramatically below comparable offers for an expensive item, with no credible explanation.
- The seller pressures you to pay outside the marketplace or by an irreversible method.
- Contact details, return address or warranty provider are missing or contradictory.
- Reviews are unusually repetitive, all recent, or describe a different product.
- The “discount” applies only after buying unwanted accessories, memberships or subscriptions.
- A home appliance has no EnergyGuide information when an equivalent label should be available, or a bulb lacks relevant Lighting Facts information.
- The return policy excludes opened, activated or installed products even though testing is necessary to discover defects.
Printable deal checklist
- My must-have features and maximum total budget are written down.
- The model number, revision, capacity, region and included items match across offers.
- I calculated shipping, taxes, mandatory accessories, installation and recurring fees.
- I checked recent feedback and inspected actual-unit photos where applicable.
- I know the marketplace protection and the seller’s contact and return process.
- I know the return deadline, shipping responsibility, restocking fee and refund method.
- I know the warranty provider, duration, exclusions, remedy and claim steps.
- For a refurbished or used item, I confirmed condition, inclusions and who handles repairs.
- For an energy-using home product, I checked EnergyGuide or Lighting Facts information and likely operating costs.
- I saved the listing and policy details and will test the product during the return window.
Frequently asked questions
Does a larger percentage discount mean a better deal?
No. The percentage may use an inflated reference price, apply to a different configuration or omit shipping and required extras. Compare the exact model’s complete checkout cost and coverage instead.
How can I compare one appliance across stores?
Match the model number, size, configuration and included services first. Then compare delivered price, installation, return terms, warranty handling and the EnergyGuide information for equivalent models.

Is refurbished technology worth considering?
It can be, when the condition standard, actual inclusions, testing, return route and warranty are explicit. “Refurbished” alone does not establish that the unit is equivalent to new.
What should I do if the seller’s price seems impossibly low?
Pause the purchase. Verify the seller and listing, check independent evidence, keep payment inside a protected channel and confirm a practical return address and remedy. An implausibly low price can signal a counterfeit or fraudulent listing.
Does U.S. consumer guidance apply everywhere?
The cited FTC material is U.S. guidance. Marketplace protections, implied warranties, return rights and other consumer laws depend on your location and the specific seller and transaction, so confirm the rules that apply where you buy.
