Check the exact item’s recent price history, verify what the advertised comparison price means, and compare the final checkout total—not just the crossed-out price or percentage off. A festive-sale label, countdown timer, or “low stock” message cannot prove that an offer is a bargain. Rules about reference prices differ by country, so treat legal examples as jurisdiction-specific.
Start with the product, not the discount
A price comparison only tells you something useful if it is for the same thing. Before you judge a promotion, note the product’s model or SKU, size, quantity, condition, included accessories, and bundle contents. For clothing or electronics, a similar-looking item may be a different version; for household products, the “deal” may be a smaller pack or a bundle that includes items you did not plan to buy.
Also record who is selling it and where the offer applies. The same retailer may have different prices online and in a physical store, while marketplace listings can come from different sellers with different delivery, warranty, and return terms. A lower figure for a different condition, seller, channel, or quantity is not a like-for-like saving.
- Match the model, variant, size, and quantity.
- Check whether the item is new, refurbished, open-box, or otherwise subject to a different condition.
- Compare bundle contents and included services rather than relying on a similar product photo or name.
- Note the seller and sales channel, plus any differences in delivery, warranty, and returns.
Use unit pricing when pack sizes differ
If one listing has more units or a larger volume than another, compare the price per unit or standard measure where the information is available. A lower pack price does not necessarily mean a lower cost for the same quantity. Unit pricing is also useful for exposing a “multi-buy” offer that looks cheaper only because it requires purchasing more than you need.

Check the product’s own price history
Look at the item’s price before the sale and at earlier changes, not just the figure displayed beside today’s offer. A history chart can show whether the price was lower recently, whether the current price is near a previous low, or whether a higher “regular” level has repeatedly appeared only briefly between promotions. Use records for the same product and retailer where possible; histories for a different model or another seller cannot establish what this offer is worth.
Price-history records are evidence to help you decide, not a legal ruling or a guarantee that a price is the best available. Check what the record covers and whether it appears to track the same variant, seller, and channel. If the history is incomplete, unavailable, or does not distinguish variants, treat its conclusion as uncertain rather than assuming the chart proves a bargain.
Read the pattern, not just the most recent point
A short-lived price immediately before a promotion may not tell the whole story. If the item has regularly moved between a high “full” price and a lower sale price, ask how long it was actually offered at the higher level and how often customers paid it. In UK advertising guidance, the wider pricing history, duration at each level, and sales data can matter when deciding whether a claimed usual price is genuine. A reference price often needs to have applied for longer than the promotional price; regularly fluctuating prices can undermine a claim that the higher figure is the usual price.
Do not confuse a past low with a guarantee that the price will fall again. It is one point of comparison, not a prediction. Your practical question is whether the present offer is competitive for the exact item and worth paying today, given your needs and the terms attached.

Find out what the crossed-out price represents
A crossed-out figure may represent a seller’s former price, a recommended retail price (RRP), or a comparison with another price. Those are different claims. Look for wording that identifies the basis, and do not assume that a percentage-off badge means the seller recently charged the higher amount.
The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) says advertisers should be able to substantiate usual selling prices with pricing history and, where relevant, sales data. Canada’s Competition Bureau similarly says a seller’s regular price must be genuine and provable. Its guidance states: “When advertising, businesses cannot invent a higher regular price to make a sale look like a bargain when it’s not.”
In the European Union, official consumer guidance says that covered price-reduction announcements generally must show the lowest price applied during at least the preceding 30 days. This is a rule about covered reductions, not a universal rule for every kind of promotion or every country. Some detailed legal exceptions may apply.

Its guidance also addresses time-limited discounts and pricing disclosures. The shared practical point across these examples is to ask what the comparison refers to; the legal test itself is not identical across jurisdictions.

How the rules differ by location
There is no single worldwide definition of a valid sale price. These official examples help explain why a retailer’s advertised comparison should be evaluated under the rules applicable to the shopper, seller, product, and promotion.

For a particular dispute or product category, consult the current consumer or advertising authority guidance for the relevant jurisdiction. These examples explain the cited regimes; they are not legal advice for every country, product, or promotion.
Compare equivalent offers and the real payable total
Once the item and reference price are clear, compare the offer with other listings for the same specifications and quantity. A headline price can conceal meaningful differences: one offer may include delivery, a longer warranty, or a bundle; another may have restrictive returns or require collection. Those differences do not automatically make one offer better, but they belong in the comparison.

A simple comparison example
Suppose two hypothetical listings advertise the same device. Listing A shows a lower item price but charges for delivery; Listing B costs more before delivery but includes it. Compare each offer’s total at the same stage of purchase, then account for any required membership or coupon eligibility. If Listing A’s seller offers different warranty or return terms, record that separately rather than pretending the prices are identical in value. This example illustrates the method; it is not a current retailer offer.
The European Commission’s online-trader screening published on 26 March 2026 found examples of late-added costs and optional items. Among traders checked in participating countries, 10% used drip pricing—adding extra fees such as shipping or service fees late in the process. Separately, 36% attempted to add optional items, and among those traders, 40% did so without clearly requesting consent. These are findings from that screening, not estimates for all retailers or all festive sales.

A countdown timer, “only a few left” message, or claim that an offer ends soon can pressure you to act, but none establishes that the price is good. Pause long enough to check the product, seller, history, and checkout total independently. If the seller or listing changes during checkout, verify again that you are buying the same item from the same seller under the same terms.

A step-by-step check before you pay
- Write down what you are buying. Record the exact model or SKU, variant, size or quantity, condition, and included items. Check that the sale listing matches that description.
- Inspect the seller and channel. Confirm who fulfills the order, whether the price is online-only or store-specific, and what delivery, warranty, and return conditions apply.
- Look up the item’s price history. Prefer records for the same product and retailer. Review the immediately preceding price, earlier fluctuations, ordinary past levels, and previous lows. Treat an incomplete or mismatched history as inconclusive.
- Identify the reference-price claim. Determine whether the crossed-out figure is a former seller price, RRP, or another comparison. Consider whether the seller’s pricing history supports the claim under the rules relevant to your location.
- Compare equivalent offers. Match specifications and quantity across sellers. Account for unit price, bundle contents, delivery, warranty, and return terms.
- Check eligibility and the checkout total. Verify shipping, handling, service fees, taxes, memberships, coupons, and payment conditions. Remove optional items you did not choose and make sure the advertised price is actually available to you.
- Ignore urgency as evidence. Do not treat a timer or low-stock notice as proof of a historic low. Verify the offer without relying on the pressure message.
- Decide on value, not the percentage badge. Ask whether you wanted the item before seeing the promotion, whether this is the best comparable offer you can find, and whether its final price and terms are worth accepting.
What the 2026 EU screening does—and does not—show
On 26 March 2026, the European Commission and participating consumer protection authorities reported results from a screening of online traders in participating countries. The figures below describe that exercise; they should not be read as rates for all retailers, all EU traders, or festive sales specifically.

The screening supports practical caution about comparison-price explanations, add-ons, late fees, and pressure tactics. It does not establish that every seasonal promotion is misleading, nor does any individual statistic determine whether a particular offer is genuine. For your purchase, the product-specific history, transparent basis for the reference price, and amount payable are the relevant checks.
Make the decision without being anchored by the sale label
Percentage-off labels encourage you to focus on the apparent reduction from a stated reference. Instead, compare the present total with the product’s own recent history and equivalent offers, then decide whether the item is worth that amount to you. A large claimed discount can still leave an ordinary price if the reference was inflated or rarely charged; a modest discount can be worthwhile if the final price and terms suit your needs.

Use the promotion as a reason to investigate, not as a reason to buy. If the exact product, comparison basis, or checkout total remains unclear, the claimed saving is not established well enough to make the decision for you.
