Use an existing Steam Wallet balance at Steam checkout: open the Steam Store or client, choose a game or DLC, or start a supported Steam transaction inside a game. During order review, Steam applies Wallet funds first by default. Confirm the amount and payment method before placing the order, then verify the result in your Wallet balance and purchase history.
Wallet funds work only for eligible Steam transactions. They are not cash, cannot be withdrawn to a bank account, and cannot be transferred to another Steam account.
What Steam Wallet funds can buy
Valve describes Steam Wallet funds as usable for any game on Steam or for purchases within a game that supports Steam transactions. The Steam Subscriber Agreement also lists subscriptions, related Steam content, Community Market transactions, and hardware among eligible Steam uses. Eligibility is determined at checkout, so a balance does not guarantee that every listing, add-on, account, or region can complete a transaction.
For this guide, the practical purchase routes are the Steam Store, an in-game Steam transaction, and the Community Market. Each route has its own support requirements and refund treatment.

The deadlines in the table are Valve policy terms, not a promise that every request will be approved. Steam Support evaluates the individual transaction and the conditions attached to that item.
Check your balance before buying
Open the account’s Wallet view
Use the account interface to view the current Wallet balance. The displayed amount is the spendable balance for the signed-in Steam account and its configured currency. If you use more than one Steam account, confirm the account name before starting checkout; Wallet funds belong to the account that holds them.
Check currency and region
Steam transactions are presented in the account’s supported currency and region. A currency mismatch can prevent a purchase even when the Wallet appears to contain enough value. Do not assume that a balance shown in one currency will be accepted after a region or currency change. If the checkout error mentions currency, record the exact message before contacting Steam Support.
Know what the balance is not
- Wallet funds have no cash value outside Steam.
- You cannot withdraw the balance to a bank or payment card.
- You cannot transfer Wallet funds to another Steam account.
- You can use Wallet funds to purchase an eligible Steam gift for another person, but that is a new Steam purchase rather than a transfer of your balance.
Buy a Steam game with Wallet funds
- Open the Steam Store or Steam client. Sign in to the account that contains the balance.
- Open the game’s store listing. Confirm that the title is the edition you want and that the listing is available for purchase in your account’s region.
- Start checkout. Select the listing’s purchase control and continue to the order review screen.
- Inspect the payment breakdown. Steam applies Wallet funds first by default. Check the Wallet amount being used, any remaining balance, and any amount that would be charged to another payment method.
- Change the method before confirming if necessary. On the purchase confirmation screen, select another available payment method if you intend to preserve the Wallet balance. Make this change before placing the order; do not rely on changing it after confirmation.
- Confirm the order. Submit the purchase only after the title, edition, price, and payment method are correct.
- Verify the result. Reopen the Wallet balance and purchase history in the account interface. The history shows whether the order completed and which funding source was used.
If the Wallet covers only part of the price, Steam’s checkout can request another available payment method for the remainder. Review the final total rather than assuming the Wallet will cover the entire order.
Use Wallet funds for DLC
Find the add-on through its store listing
DLC is purchased as Steam Store content. Open the base game’s listing or the DLC’s own listing, select the specific add-on, and proceed through the same checkout sequence used for a game. Check the title, edition, and any package contents before confirming: a season pass, bundle, and single expansion can have different prices and entitlements.

Confirm compatibility and availability
The Store listing and signed-in checkout determine whether a particular DLC can be bought. A listing may be unavailable for an account, region, or base-game edition, and Steam’s general Wallet description does not promise that every add-on will complete for every account. If the purchase control is missing or checkout rejects the item, do not treat the Wallet balance as the cause until you have checked the listing and the exact error.
Protect your refund options
Store DLC generally follows Valve’s 14-day and under-two-hours framework, but the add-on must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred. Some third-party DLC is explicitly marked nonrefundable. Read the refund notice shown for that DLC before buying, especially when the add-on immediately grants consumable currency or changes an online account.
Buy in-game items or currency
Check whether the game uses Steam transactions
Wallet funds pay for an in-game item or currency only when the game supports Steam transactions. Steamworks documentation describes developers using Steam microtransactions for individual items and in-game currency. The game’s store listing and its own purchase flow are the authoritative signals for what is supported.
Complete the purchase inside the game
- Launch the game from the Steam account holding the Wallet balance.
- Open the game’s shop, item menu, or currency purchase screen.
- Select the item or amount and choose the Steam transaction option when it is offered.
- Review the item, price, and account receiving it. Make sure the transaction is for the intended game account or character.
- Approve the Steam checkout and wait for the game to confirm delivery before closing it.
- Check the item inventory or currency balance, then review Steam purchase history if delivery or payment is unclear.
In a free-to-play game, Steam says Wallet funding is needed for in-game purchases, while buying items remains optional for playing and progressing. A game can therefore be playable without offering every type of Wallet-funded purchase.
Understand item-specific refund limits
In-game refund eligibility is different from the Store game rule. Valve-developed game purchases may qualify within 48 hours when the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. A third-party developer may opt into the same arrangement, and Steam identifies that participation at purchase. Once an item is consumed, changed, or moved, refund eligibility can be lost.

Spend Wallet funds on the Community Market
How a Market purchase works
- Open the Steam Community Market while signed in to the account with Wallet funds.
- Search for the specific inventory item and review the listing price and item description.
- Choose an available listing and proceed to the Market confirmation screen.
- Review the total Wallet amount required and confirm only when the item and price are correct.
- After completion, check the Steam inventory and Wallet transaction history.
Market purchases use Steam Wallet funds, but a completed purchase is final. Steam says it cannot be refunded or reversed, so inspect the listing carefully before confirming. Eligibility restrictions can apply to Market access and to individual inventory items; an unavailable listing is not evidence that the Wallet balance is unusable elsewhere.
Do not confuse sale proceeds with cash
Wallet proceeds from selling items remain inside Steam. They cannot be withdrawn to a bank account or transferred to another Steam account. A Market sale can increase the balance available for later Steam purchases, but it does not create cash outside Steam.
Review and change the payment method correctly
Wallet funds are applied first by default. This behavior is convenient when you want to spend the balance, but it can be surprising when you intended to use a card or another method. The only reliable point to change that choice is the purchase confirmation screen before you submit the order.
- Confirm the account and item first.
- Check the Wallet amount shown in the payment breakdown.
- Select another payment method if you do not want Wallet funds used.
- Verify the final total and then place the order.
- Use purchase history to confirm the funding source after completion.
If the order fails before confirmation, the Wallet balance should remain available. If the order appears complete but the balance or item is wrong, stop retrying and inspect purchase history so you do not create duplicate transactions.
Refunds: what can and cannot be returned
Games and software
Valve’s published standard policy allows a refund request for an eligible game or software purchase within 14 days and with less than two hours of playtime. The policy is applied to the specific transaction, so special circumstances or excluded products can change the result.

DLC
Store DLC generally uses the same 14-day and under-two-hours framework, with the additional requirement that the DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Some third-party DLC is labeled nonrefundable at purchase.
In-game purchases
Qualifying purchases made in a Valve-developed game may be refundable within 48 hours when the item remains unused and unaltered. Third-party developers decide whether to participate in the same arrangement, and Steam shows that status during purchase.
Wallet funding
Purchased Wallet funds may be refundable within 14 days only when none of those funds have been used. Spending even part of the funded amount can affect eligibility for the Wallet-funding refund.
Community Market transactions
Completed Community Market purchases are final and cannot be refunded or reversed. This is the clearest case where checking the item and price before confirmation is essential.

How to request a refund
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the purchasing account.
- Select the relevant purchase from the account’s transaction list.
- Choose the available refund or purchase-help option and provide the requested reason.
- Submit the request and keep the transaction details until Steam responds.
Because policies can change and exceptions exist, read the current notice shown for the specific item before relying on a refund assumption.

Fix a failed Steam Wallet checkout
Try the other Steam interface
Steam recommends switching between the Steam client and the Steam website. If checkout fails in the client, retry from the website; if the website fails, use the client. This separates an interface problem from an account or transaction problem.
Remove VPN or proxy interference
Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily and retry from the account’s normal network. Region or currency checks can reject a transaction when the connection does not match the account’s expected location. Re-enable network privacy tools only after the purchase issue is resolved.
Check the currency error exactly
A currency mismatch can block checkout. Copy the complete error message, including the item and displayed currency, before contacting Steam Support. Avoid repeatedly submitting the order while the error persists, because repeated attempts make it harder to identify which transaction actually completed.

After any failed or interrupted attempt, inspect the Wallet balance and purchase history. If the balance changed but the game, DLC, or item did not appear, use the transaction record when contacting support. If neither changed, correct the checkout issue and try once more.
A practical decision checklist
- Buying a game: use the Steam Store checkout and verify the edition before confirming.
- Buying DLC: confirm the base game, package contents, and any nonrefundable label.
- Buying an in-game item: verify that the game supports Steam transactions and that the item has not already been delivered through another account.
- Buying from the Community Market: inspect the exact listing because completed purchases are final.
- Preserving Wallet funds: change the payment method on the confirmation screen before submitting the order.
- Investigating a problem: check balance and purchase history, then switch client or website and remove VPN or proxy interference.
- Considering a refund: check the item-specific Steam Support notice before consuming, modifying, transferring, or selling anything connected to the purchase.
What to remember
Steam Wallet funds are a payment balance for eligible Steam transactions, not a general-purpose cash account. The Store handles games and DLC, supported games handle microtransactions, and the Community Market handles eligible inventory listings. Steam normally spends Wallet funds first, so review the payment breakdown before confirming. Keep the finality and refund rules in mind: Market purchases cannot be reversed, in-game eligibility depends on the developer and item state, and Store or Wallet-funding requests are governed by Valve’s stated conditions.
