Start by asking whether your current device still handles your workload, has enough capacity, and receives security updates. If it does, keeping it longer may be the cheapest way to avoid today’s higher prices. If it does not, match the replacement or upgrade to what you actually need, then check compatibility, support, and total cost before buying.

Why are memory and storage prices rising?

Memory and storage costs are under pressure as demand from large AI data-center operators competes for supply, while new fabrication capacity takes time to reach volume production. Jim Handy of Objective Analysis described these factors in a July 27, 2026 TechTarget article. Capacity expansion or weaker demand could ease the imbalance, but the source does not identify a reliable date for that to happen.

Forecasts underline the potential impact, but they are not confirmed results or a live survey of retail prices. Gartner’s February 26, 2026 forecast projected combined DRAM and SSD prices to rise 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025. It also projected PC prices to rise 17% and smartphone prices 13% over the same comparison. Gartner estimated memory would account for 23% of PC bill of materials in 2026, up from 16% in 2025. These are Gartner forecasts, not guarantees about the price of any particular device or component.

Gartner also projected 2026 PC shipments to fall 10.4% and smartphone shipments to fall 8.4% versus 2025, while consumer PC lifetimes would increase by 20% by the end of 2026. Its Senior Director Analyst Ranjit Atwal said, “Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles.” Gartner separately forecast that “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” Both statements describe forecasts, not settled outcomes.

RAM and SSD prices do not necessarily move together

Framework’s company updates illustrate why it is worth checking current quotes rather than assuming memory and storage follow one price trend. The company reported a stable month for DDR5 costs in one update while SSD sourcing costs rose, and said it had qualified a mix of drive suppliers for some prebuilt systems. These are observations about Framework’s own sourcing and inventory, not a market-wide price index.

TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 outlook estimated the DRAM sufficiency ratio at approximately -1% to -2% for 2026 and expected the supply-demand gap to widen in 2027. For NAND, it said higher-layer migration and new-fab ramps could increase output in 2027 and turn the sufficiency ratio positive; enterprise demand and possible AI demand remain variables. Those are supply outlooks, not promises about when consumer prices will fall.

Should you wait or replace your device?

Do not replace a working device solely because headlines say prices are rising. First check whether it still meets your actual needs and whether it remains supported. HP recommends assessing performance, modern software requirements, and end-of-support status when deciding whether to keep or replace a computer (HP’s laptop-buying guidance).

  • Keep it longer if it performs adequately for your work, has the capacity you need, and continues to receive security updates.
  • Plan an upgrade or replacement if a real workload is constrained, your software no longer works acceptably, or the device has reached end of support. A lower purchase price is not a good trade if the device cannot do the job or leaves you without needed security updates.

The case for waiting is strongest when the device is supported and functional; the case for replacement is stronger when a concrete performance, compatibility, capacity, or security need is unmet. No forecast in the cited sources establishes a dependable date to buy instead.

How to choose a lower-cost configuration that still fits

Define the work before choosing specifications. Everyday productivity, 4K video editing, and software development can call for different memory and storage configurations. HP recommends matching specifications to actual use and considering alternative configurations rather than paying for capacity or performance that brings no practical benefit.

  • Capacity: estimate how much memory and storage your applications and files actually require, including reasonable headroom for the way you use the device.
  • Performance: pay for faster components when the workload benefits from them; do not treat the highest specification as automatically necessary.
  • Compatibility: confirm that the processor, memory, storage interface, and operating system work with the applications and accessories you need.
  • Total cost: compare the complete device price alongside warranty, support, reliability, and expected usable life—not just the component price.

HP notes that alternative specifications and processor generations may open up available inventory while still meeting requirements. A smaller or slower configuration saves money only if it remains suitable for the workload and does not force a costly replacement soon afterward. The available sources do not provide current consumer prices to identify a universally cheapest configuration.

When does an SSD upgrade make sense?

An SSD upgrade can be a practical alternative to buying a new computer, but only if the existing device supports a replaceable drive. Some computers have storage that cannot be upgraded or that uses a different size or interface. Do not assume an NVMe SSD will fit just because it is common in newer systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the exact model and service manual. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for whether the storage is replaceable and which drive types it supports.
  2. Confirm the specifications. Verify the interface, physical drive length, and maximum supported capacity against the manual and the device’s configuration.
  3. Check warranty and support implications. Review manufacturer guidance and warranty terms before opening the device or changing components.
  4. Compare current quotes. Component inventory and sourcing costs change; an old price or a general price trend may not reflect what is available now.

Framework’s updates on changing SSD sourcing and inventory are one reason to compare current offers rather than rely on past prices. They do not establish that an SSD upgrade will be cheaper than replacing any particular computer.

How can organizations make existing storage go further?

Businesses may be able to defer purchases by managing capacity already in use. In a TechTarget discussion of storage costs, Jim Handy points to storage-management software, deduplication, and archiving as ways to make existing infrastructure go further.

These measures need governance, not indiscriminate cleanup. Before deleting or moving data, account for legal and contractual retention obligations, security controls, and recovery needs. An archive that is difficult to retrieve—or data removed without meeting a retention requirement—can create costs and risks that outweigh the capacity savings.

When should businesses consider reuse or incremental buying?

For enterprise fleets, Handy describes salvaging older drives after secure data destruction and cites Meta’s work on reusing server memory. He also recommends treating upgrades as incremental improvements rather than committing to a large bulk purchase that could precede a price correction. This is enterprise guidance, not a blanket recommendation to buy used consumer components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For reused drives, establish secure data destruction before reallocation and confirm the drive’s health and provenance.
  • Check compatibility with the intended system and verify that support and recovery arrangements remain adequate.
  • Make fleet purchases in increments when that fits operational needs, rather than assuming a large order is the best response to a forecast.

Which cost-saving option should you compare?

The right choice depends on whether you need more capacity, a different device, or simply better management of what you already own. Compare options using the same practical criteria rather than focusing on one component’s sticker price.

Option Best fit What to verify
Keep a supported device It meets workload and capacity needs. Performance, software compatibility, and ongoing security support.
Choose a different new-device configuration You need a replacement but can meet requirements with another specification or generation. Workload fit, availability, warranty, support, and total system price.
Upgrade a replaceable SSD Storage is the specific limitation and the computer allows an upgrade. Service manual, interface, physical length, supported capacity, and warranty.
Manage existing organizational data Capacity can be reclaimed or used more efficiently. Retention, security, recovery, and the suitability of archiving or deduplication.
Reuse vetted enterprise hardware A fleet can use compatible equipment with a controlled reuse process. Provenance, health, compatibility, secure data destruction, and support.

Prices and inventory vary by country, retailer, device generation, and date. The cited sources do not establish current consumer prices across these options, so compare quotes for your specific device and region.
