To make an API faster, first identify where requests are spending time, then change one bottleneck at a time and measure again under the same workload. Slowdowns can come from client setup, large payloads, network round trips, backend work, or gateway startup—not just the API code itself.

1. Measure latency and find the slow path

Start with a baseline for the endpoints users rely on. Track latency by endpoint and review percentiles alongside traffic, errors, request and response sizes, deployments, and backend logs. An average alone can hide a small group of very slow requests; percentiles help show how the slower end of the request distribution behaves.

Interpret percentiles in context. A percentile estimate is only useful when the measurement window and request volume provide enough observations. Establish alert thresholds from your workload’s normal behavior and user needs rather than applying a universal latency target.

After each change, repeat the same measurement with a comparable workload and observation method. Google Cloud recommends monitoring latency alongside traffic and errors in its metrics guidance and API Gateway monitoring documentation. Its troubleshooting guide also identifies request and response size as factors to investigate.

2. Reuse clients, sessions, and connections

If your client library supports it, create a client or session once and reuse it instead of rebuilding one for every request. Initial setup may involve network work for authentication, authorization, or token generation; a reused client can share credentials and refresh tokens as needed. For HTTP/1.1, reuse TCP connections rather than opening a new one for each call.

Check your library’s lifecycle and concurrency guidance before sharing an instance. The appropriate reuse pattern depends on the client implementation. Google’s client-library best practices discuss client reuse, while its HTTP guidelines cover connection reuse.

3. Send only the data the caller needs

Trim unnecessary fields from requests and responses, and paginate large collections when the API supports it. Larger payloads can increase serialization, transfer, and backend costs, but the benefit of reducing them depends on the endpoint and caller. Avoid assuming that a particular payload reduction will produce a fixed speedup.

For collection endpoints, use pagination so clients can request manageable subsets instead of retrieving an entire dataset at once. Google’s client libraries include common pagination boilerplate, and its troubleshooting guidance recommends considering request and response sizes when diagnosing slow performance.

Not only network cables, but also phone lines and BNC cables.

4. Use an HTTP version your stack supports well

Google Cloud generally recommends HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 for performance, reduced head-of-line blocking, and resilience to network failures. Both protocols support multiplexing, allowing multiple requests to use a connection. The practical benefit depends on support across your clients, servers, and intermediaries, so verify the negotiated protocol across the path rather than assuming that a client setting alone changes it.

Google’s HTTP guidelines describe these protocol considerations. Do not build a design around HTTP/2 server push, which is deprecated.

5. Cache responses only when the data can safely be reused

Response caching can reduce backend calls and latency for data that is requested repeatedly and changes periodically. It is a correctness decision as much as a performance one: cache keys must distinguish the relevant resource and authorization context, and freshness or invalidation rules must match how quickly the data needs to reflect changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not cache personalized or access-controlled responses under a key that could serve one caller’s data to another. Apigee’s response caching documentation explains its product’s caching behavior and relevant Cache-Control handling; those details do not mean that caching is suitable for every API.

6. Stream results when progressive delivery helps

Server streaming can improve the time to the first usable result when a client can process partial results and network round-trip times are long. Measure time to first result separately from total completion time: streaming can make an interaction feel faster without reducing the time required to deliver the full response.

Check the client and platform constraints before choosing a streaming pattern. Browser support differs for client-streaming, server-streaming, and full-duplex interactions. Google’s HTTP guidelines discuss protocol and streaming considerations.

7. Separate application latency from gateway and cold-start effects

Compare gateway and backend request logs over the same interval. If the gateway reports a slow request but backend processing is short, the delay may lie in gateway handling, connection setup, or another part of the request path. If backend time is high, investigate the application and its dependencies rather than assuming a gateway change will help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google documents a cold-start case for API Gateway after a period of inactivity in its troubleshooting guide. That observation applies to the documented service scenario; it is not a general latency benchmark or evidence that every gateway, cloud function, or API behaves the same way.

Choose the fix that matches the measured bottleneck

Compare candidate changes using the same workload and measurement method before and after implementation. Include tail latency and time to first result where relevant, along with throughput, resource use, freshness and correctness, compatibility, implementation effort, and ongoing service cost.

Measured bottleneck Potential change What to verify
Repeated client or connection setup Reuse supported clients, sessions, or HTTP/1.1 connections Latency under the same call pattern and the client library’s sharing behavior
Large requests or responses Trim fields or paginate collections Payload size, serialization and transfer time, and caller requirements
Network round trips or protocol behavior Use HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 where the full stack supports it; consider streaming if partial results help Negotiated protocol, client compatibility, time to first result, and total completion time
Repeated reads of safely reusable data Introduce response caching with suitable keys and freshness rules Correctness, authorization boundaries, cache hit behavior, and data freshness
Gateway delay or apparent cold start Compare gateway and backend logs for the same requests and interval Where the measured time is spent and whether the documented service-specific scenario applies
