You can often make a slow Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop more responsive using tools already included with Windows. Start by checking updates, malware, free storage, startup programs, and the processes consuming CPU, memory, or disk time. Then consider visual-effects and power settings, and run Windows’ drive-optimization tool. These actions address common software causes, but Microsoft notes that several causes can exist at once and that older hardware may not improve significantly.
Why a Windows laptop becomes slow
Slowness is a symptom, not a single fault. Microsoft identifies several possible contributors: insufficient free storage, too many startup or background applications, outdated Windows or drivers, malware, resource-heavy tasks, and hardware that no longer meets current workloads. More than one can be present on the same laptop. Microsoft’s performance checklist is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Use the sequence below from lowest risk to higher trade-off. Restart after major changes so Windows can release stuck processes and apply pending updates. Do not expect a universal percentage or time saving: Microsoft provides no guaranteed measured improvement for these steps.
1. Install Windows updates and check for malware
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update (in Windows 10, it may appear under Update & Security).
- Choose Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted.
Updates can include bug fixes and performance improvements. Under Advanced options or Optional updates, Windows may list driver updates. Install an optional driver only when it matches your hardware and addresses a known compatibility or stability issue; do not assume every optional driver is appropriate for every laptop.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Run a Windows Security scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Quick scan.
A malicious process can consume CPU, memory, disk activity, or network bandwidth. If the quick scan reports a problem, follow Windows Security’s remediation instructions before judging whether other performance changes worked. Microsoft includes these update and security checks in its performance guidance.
2. Inspect storage before deleting anything
See what is filling the drive
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Wait for Windows to calculate categories such as installed apps, temporary files, documents, pictures, and other files.
- Open the largest categories and identify items you recognize before removing them.
A drive that is nearly full leaves Windows less room for temporary files, updates, caches, and virtual-memory activity. Freeing space is sensible when storage is the bottleneck, but deleting random folders can break applications or remove files you still need.
Compare Windows’ built-in cleanup choices
| Tool | What it does | Control and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense | Automatically removes selected temporary files and can empty the Recycle Bin according to your settings. | Review its configuration and schedule; files in selected locations can be removed automatically. |
| Cleanup recommendations | Shows categories Windows considers suitable for cleanup, including temporary or unused items. | Inspect each category and its contents before confirming. |
| Disk Cleanup | Lists removable Windows and temporary-file categories, with an option to clean system files. | Read the category descriptions. Removing the previous Windows installation can remove your ability to roll back to the earlier version. |
Microsoft explains these options in Free up drive space in Windows and Storage settings in Windows.

Handle the Windows.old folder carefully
After an upgrade, Windows may retain the previous installation in a folder named Windows.old. It can consume substantial storage, but deleting it removes the option to return to the earlier Windows version. Keep it until you are certain the current installation works and you no longer need that rollback path.
Move large personal files when storage is the issue
Photos, videos, music, and documents can be moved to an external drive to create space. A portable external SSD is one possible destination, but it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade: it primarily changes where files are stored. Check that the drive’s connector matches an available laptop port, keep at least one independent backup of important files, and verify that files open from the new location before deleting the originals.
3. Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Disable unneeded startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps. On some Windows versions, select the Startup tab instead.
- Review each entry’s name and startup impact.
- Select an application you do not need immediately after sign-in, then choose Disable.
Disable only programs you recognize and do not need running at sign-in. Leave hardware utilities, security software, accessibility tools, and anything required for a peripheral enabled unless you know its function. Disabling an entry does not uninstall it; you can return to the same list and choose Enable later. Microsoft documents the labels and behavior in Configure Startup applications in Windows.
Limit background permissions where Windows offers them
For supported apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open an app’s menu, choose Advanced options, and inspect Background apps permissions. Set background activity to Never only for an app whose notifications, syncing, or live updates you do not need. Labels and availability vary by Windows edition and app type.

Startup and background controls solve different problems. A startup entry launches at sign-in, while a background permission controls activity after an app is installed and available. Turning off one does not necessarily turn off the other, so check both only when you have a specific app that you do not need active.
4. Find the process using your resources
Use Task Manager’s Processes view
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- In Processes, click the CPU, Memory, or Disk column to sort by current use.
- Switch to Performance for graphs of processor, memory, storage, network, and (when supported) graphics activity.
Look for an application you recognize that is consuming unusually high resources. Save your work, close that application normally, and see whether responsiveness returns. Close unneeded browser tabs and windows, especially when memory usage is high. If the laptop remains sluggish after closing legitimate workloads, restart Windows.
Do not terminate unfamiliar system processes
Task Manager lists Windows components as well as your applications. Ending an unknown process can cause data loss, application crashes, or an unstable session. If a process name is unfamiliar, leave it running and identify the associated application through its context menu or the application’s own settings rather than ending it blindly.
Interpret the symptom
- CPU repeatedly near the top: an active application, update, scan, or computation may be responsible.
- Memory nearly full: close unused programs and browser tabs; persistent pressure can indicate that the workload exceeds the laptop’s installed memory.
- Disk activity stays high: updates, indexing, security scans, file synchronization, or a storage bottleneck may be involved.
These indicators identify what is busy at that moment; they do not by themselves prove that a component is defective. Observe the laptop during the actual slowdown rather than relying on one reading taken while it is idle.
5. Choose between responsiveness, battery life, and heat
Select an appropriate power mode
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Power mode.
- Choose Best performance when the laptop is plugged in and responsiveness is more important than energy use.
Microsoft warns that Best performance can use more power, reduce battery life, and make the laptop warmer. On battery power, Balanced or an available efficiency-focused mode is usually the better trade-off. If your edition uses the classic Control Panel, the equivalent plans may be under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
| Setting choice | Potential benefit | Cost or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced or efficiency-focused mode | Lower power use and less heat during ordinary work. | May favor battery endurance over peak responsiveness. |
| Best performance | Allows higher performance when demand rises. | More power consumption, faster battery drain, and more heat; it is not a guaranteed speed increase. |
Reduce visual effects if appearance is less important
- Open Start and search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
- Open the matching control-panel result.
- On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance, or turn off individual effects.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
This reduces animations and other effects that can consume system resources, especially on older hardware. The interface will look less elaborate, so restore individual effects if the visual change is not worth the trade-off.
6. Run Windows’ built-in drive optimization
- Search Start for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
- Select the relevant drive.
- Choose Optimize.
Windows chooses the appropriate optimization for the drive type. Use the built-in utility rather than third-party defragmenters, and do not assume it will produce a noticeable gain on every laptop. Microsoft includes this step in its performance checklist.

7. Troubleshoot according to what you observe
The laptop is slow immediately after sign-in
Revisit Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only unnecessary entries. Then check whether a sign-in task is consuming CPU, memory, or disk in Processes. A restart after changing startup entries lets you evaluate the effect without other sessions or pending operations clouding the result.
Windows reports low disk space
Use Settings > System > Storage to identify the largest categories, then review Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup. Keep personal files you still need, and treat Windows.old as a rollback decision rather than ordinary temporary data.
One app makes everything sluggish
Sort Task Manager by CPU, Memory, and Disk while that app is active. Save work and close the application if its resource use is excessive. Reduce its open files, browser tabs, or plug-ins where applicable, and restart it before assuming Windows itself is the problem.
Performance changes only while plugged in
Compare the selected power mode and temperature on battery versus AC power. Best performance is designed for responsiveness but can increase heat and battery drain; Balanced may feel slower under demanding workloads.
The laptop remains slow after software cleanup
Check whether the same resource stays saturated during a simple task and whether the storage drive, memory capacity, or processor is consistently the limiting factor. If updates, security checks, storage cleanup, startup review, and process management make no meaningful difference, the limitation may be hardware rather than a setting.
8. Verify changes instead of changing everything at once
Make one group of related changes, restart if appropriate, and repeat the same task that originally felt slow. For example, record whether the delay occurs at sign-in, while opening a browser, or while saving a large file. Then compare Task Manager’s CPU, memory, and disk views during that same task. This does not create a formal benchmark, but it helps distinguish a real improvement from a temporary lull.
Keep a note of startup entries you disable and storage categories you remove. If a notification, sync function, or peripheral stops behaving as expected, you can return to the startup list or app settings and re-enable the related item. Avoid making several irreversible deletions before you know which change mattered.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting files by folder name alone: use Storage settings and read category descriptions first.
- Disabling every startup entry: retain security, accessibility, hardware, and peripheral-related utilities unless you understand their purpose.
- Ending processes at random: close recognized applications normally and leave unfamiliar Windows components alone.
- Leaving Best performance enabled everywhere: use it when its extra power draw and heat are acceptable.
- Expecting optimization to repair aging hardware: built-in tools cannot add processor capacity or memory.
9. Know when built-in fixes have reached their limit
Microsoft says older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps and that upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution. An internal SSD or memory upgrade is not universal: the exact laptop model determines whether the part is replaceable, which form factor it accepts, and how much capacity it supports. Confirm the model’s service manual and compatibility before buying anything.
Do not infer that moving files to an external drive, changing a power mode, or running optimization repairs aging hardware. Those actions address storage organization or operating behavior; they cannot add processor capacity or memory that the laptop does not have.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s surfaced performance guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. A Windows 10 laptop may continue to run, but owners should check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and upgrade guidance before relying on it for sensitive or connected work. The performance steps above can still help with local responsiveness, but they do not restore security support.
A practical order of operations
For a low-risk session, work in this order: install available Windows updates and restart; run a Windows Security Quick scan; inspect Storage and remove only reviewed categories; disable unneeded startup entries; identify and close recognized resource-heavy processes; select a power mode that matches whether you are plugged in; adjust visual effects if necessary; and run Defragment and Optimize Drives. Test the laptop between changes so you know which action affected the symptom. If nothing changes, treat outdated hardware or an unsupported Windows installation as the likely decision point rather than endlessly changing settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Windows PC running slowly even after I clean up storage?
Low storage may be only one contributor. Startup or background apps, malware, updates, a resource-heavy process, or outdated hardware can also be involved. Check Task Manager while the slowdown occurs and review CPU, memory, and disk activity.
How do I free up drive space in Windows safely?
Open Settings > System > Storage and review the categories. Use Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup, but inspect the files and descriptions before confirming. Be especially careful with Windows.old: removing it removes the option to return to the previous Windows version.

Disable only applications you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. Keep security software, accessibility tools, hardware utilities, and software required for a peripheral enabled unless you know exactly what it does. You can re-enable an entry later in Task Manager.
Best Value
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Will Best performance mode make my laptop faster?
It can allow higher performance when demand rises, but Microsoft does not promise a particular gain. The setting uses more power, drains the battery faster, and can make the laptop warmer, so it is most appropriate when you are plugged in and accept those trade-offs.
Should I install every optional driver update?
No. Optional drivers should match your hardware and address a known compatibility or stability issue. An optional driver is not automatically appropriate for every laptop.
Does an external SSD speed up a slow laptop?
It can provide a place to move large photos, videos, music, or documents and thereby free internal storage. It is not a guaranteed performance fix. Check connector compatibility, keep an independent backup, and verify that files open from the new location before deleting originals.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use a third-party defragmenter or optimizer?
No extra utility is required for the built-in check. Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives and let Windows choose the appropriate optimization for the drive type. A noticeable gain is not guaranteed.
What if none of these steps helps?
Microsoft says older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly. Check the exact laptop model before considering an internal SSD or memory upgrade, because replaceability, form factor, and supported capacity vary. In some cases, replacing the device is the more practical long-term solution.
The Bottom Line
Start with Windows Update, a Windows Security Quick scan, Storage settings, and Task Manager. Remove only files and startup items you recognize, then weigh the battery and heat costs of Best performance and visual-effect changes. If the same hardware resource remains saturated after these checks, built-in settings have probably reached their limit.
