The quickest built-in check for a Mac that is slow to reach the desktop is System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Remove recognized apps, documents, folders, or connections that do not need to open at login, then review Background App Activity separately. Restart and observe the result.

These controls solve different problems. Open at Login determines what launches automatically; Background App Activity determines whether an app can perform work while it is not open, such as checking for updates or syncing data. Reducing either can change an app’s behavior, so make one deliberate change at a time and restore permission if a function you need stops working.

What startup and background controls actually change

A Mac can feel slow because too many things launch together, because apps continue working after you close their windows, or because the underlying problem is storage, memory, compatibility, or the disk itself. The Login Items & Extensions pane helps you distinguish those cases instead of treating every slowdown as a startup problem.

Control What it governs Typical reason to change it Possible side effect
Open at Login Apps, documents, folders, and connections that open automatically when you sign in. Reduce the number of programs competing for resources during login and the first few minutes after the desktop appears. An app you expect to be ready immediately will no longer open until you launch it yourself.
Background App Activity Work an app can perform while it is not open, including checking for software updates or syncing data. Stop an unneeded app from continuing scheduled work when you are not using it. Automatic updates, syncing, notifications, or other background functions may stop.

Removing an item from Open at Login does not automatically disable its background permission, and disabling background activity does not necessarily remove its launch entry. Review both lists independently. An app may be useful when opened manually but still consume resources while closed, or it may need background access even though it should not open a window every time you sign in.

Identify the symptom before changing anything

Separate a slow login from general sluggishness

Notice when the delay occurs. If the Mac takes a long time to reach a usable desktop, or the desktop is busy immediately after sign-in, startup items are a reasonable first suspect. If the Mac remains sluggish long after login, startup cleanup may have little effect and you should continue with the checks in the later troubleshooting section.

Also note whether the problem began after installing or updating an app. That timing does not prove the app is responsible, but it gives you a useful item to test first. Write down what “slow” means in your case: a delayed login screen, a desktop that takes several minutes to settle, beachballs in one app, or system-wide lag. Comparing the same symptom after each restart is more informative than relying on a general impression.

Record the current setup

Before removing anything, write down or capture the Open at Login entries and which Background App Activity permissions are enabled. A record lets you undo a change and makes the controlled test easier. Include the date and any recent app installation or update you suspect. Do not remove an item merely because its name is unfamiliar; change only entries you can identify and do not need at login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A screenshot or written list also prevents a second problem: forgetting which service supplied a needed connection, sync function, or notification. If the Mac behaves differently after the change, you can restore the original state instead of guessing.

Remove unnecessary Open at Login entries

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select General, then Login Items & Extensions.
  3. Review the Open at Login list. Apple describes this list as including apps, documents, folders, and connections, not just ordinary application icons.
  4. Select an item you recognize and do not need to open automatically, then use the remove control. Leave items that you deliberately rely on at sign-in, such as a work connection or a program that must be ready immediately.
  5. Close System Settings and restart the Mac so you can judge the change under the same login conditions that produced the slowdown.

How to decide what can wait

  • An app used only occasionally can normally be launched when needed instead of at every login.
  • A document or folder that opens for convenience can be removed if reopening it manually is acceptable.
  • A connection or utility that supports a work process should remain enabled unless you have confirmed that starting it later is safe.
  • If you cannot identify an entry or its purpose, leave it in place until you can determine what installed it. Blind removal can eliminate a function you depend on without proving that it caused the slowdown.

The objective is not to empty the list. It is to remove unnecessary automatic work while preserving the services you actually use. For example, removing a rarely used office app from Open at Login changes when its window appears; it does not uninstall the app. You can still open it from Finder, Launchpad, Spotlight, or the Dock when needed.

Make changes in small groups only when you are confident about each item. If you remove everything at once, you may improve login time but lose the ability to identify which entry mattered. A one-at-a-time approach takes longer but produces a more useful diagnosis.

Review Background App Activity as a separate decision

  1. Remain in System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
  2. Find the Background App Activity section.
  3. For each app, ask whether you need it to update, sync, or perform another task while it is closed.
  4. Turn off permission only for an app whose background function you can live without.
  5. Use the Mac normally and check the specific function you changed. If expected syncing, updates, or another service no longer works, return to the same setting and restore permission.

For example, an app that only needs to be opened for occasional manual work may not need background access. An app whose value depends on keeping data synchronized may need that permission even if it is not listed as Open at Login. Make the choice based on the function, not on the app’s name alone.

Background permission is not a performance promise in either direction. Turning it off may reduce work when the app is closed, but it can also delay an update or leave data unsynchronized until the next time you open the app. Before disabling it, decide whether you prefer less unattended activity or immediate availability of the app’s latest data.

If a feature stops working, restore the permission rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. The change is reversible, and restoring it is a useful confirmation that the background task was intentional.

Use a controlled restart test to find a troublesome item

Apple’s startup troubleshooting method is an isolation test, not a guarantee that a login item is the cause. It is useful when the Mac improves after cleanup but you need to know which entry was involved.

  1. Record the original Open at Login list.
  2. Remove the login items you are testing.
  3. Restart the Mac and check whether the original startup symptom changes.
  4. If the symptom improves, add one removed item back.
  5. Restart again and observe under the same conditions.
  6. Continue one item at a time. If the problem returns, remove the last item added and investigate that item rather than re-enabling the entire list.

Restarting after each addition matters: adding several entries at once tells you only that one of the group may be involved. The test also helps distinguish a startup-related problem from a slowdown that persists independently of login items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep your comparison fair. Use the same network, connect the same external devices, and open the same ordinary apps after each restart when those factors are part of the symptom. Note whether the problem is a blank blue screen, a delayed desktop, or merely a busy first few minutes. Apple notes that a login item can occasionally cause a blank blue screen at startup or other problems, so a severe change should be treated as a reason to remove the last item tested and examine it, not as a reason to keep experimenting with random entries.

Prevent unwanted windows and apps from reopening

An app or window can return at login without being explained by the visible Open at Login list. First, when logging out or restarting, clear Reopen windows when logging back in if you do not want the previous session restored.

On macOS Ventura or later, check System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Close windows when quitting an application. This setting affects whether an app’s windows are closed when you quit it, which in turn affects what can be restored later. Also inspect the app’s own preferences for a launch-at-login or reopen option.

If an app still reopens even though it is not listed as a login item, Apple notes that the app may have installed other software that causes the behavior. In that situation, examine the app’s own settings and any related software rather than repeatedly deleting the visible entry. Removing the visible entry alone may not address the component that is starting the app.

Earlier macOS releases use different settings names and paths. If your Mac does not show System Settings or the labels above, follow the directions for that release instead of assuming the Ventura-or-later path applies. The underlying distinction remains the same: one setting controls restoration of the previous session, while Login Items controls declared automatic launches.

Understand apps that keep running after you quit

Quitting an app window does not always end every background task associated with it. Apple warns that an app continuing to run in the background might slow Mac performance. This is why Background App Activity deserves its own review even after you clean Open at Login.

On Macs running macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple says the system shows a notification the first time an app continues running after you quit it and displays an indication on the app’s Dock icon. That guidance was published September 29, 2026. The indicators are version-specific; people on earlier systems may not see them. Treat the notification as a prompt to decide whether the app’s background function is useful, not as proof that the app is defective.

If you see such an indication, identify what the app is doing before changing anything. Updating, syncing, or maintaining a connection may be the reason you installed it. If you do not need that function, review its background permission and test the effect. If you do need it, leaving the permission enabled may be the correct choice even when the app contributes some background work.

If the Mac is still slow, check causes beyond startup activity

Removing automatic launches cannot correct every performance problem. Apple’s broader troubleshooting guidance points to several other possibilities.

Possible cause What you may notice Where to investigate What the check tells you
Insufficient free space on the startup disk Slowness continues after login, especially when the system or apps need to read and write files. Open the Mac’s Storage settings and review available space. Whether reclaiming space is a more relevant next step than changing login items. Files can be moved to another disk or external storage when appropriate; an external drive does not itself speed up startup processes.
An app needs more memory than is readily available One demanding app or several open apps coincide with the slowdown. Use Activity Monitor to inspect which apps are consuming resources, then quit unused apps. Whether an open app is placing an unusual memory or processing demand on the Mac.
App incompatibility The problem is tied to a particular app or began after an app change. Quit the suspected app and compare the Mac’s behavior without it. Check the app’s compatibility information and settings. Whether the slowdown follows that app rather than the login sequence as a whole.
Unused apps left open The Mac becomes more responsive after closing programs you are not using. Quit those apps normally and test again. Whether ordinary open-app workload, rather than a hidden startup item, is the immediate burden.
Disk problems Slowness persists across apps and does not track a particular login item. Use Disk Utility to check the startup disk. Whether disk health requires attention before further startup tweaking is worthwhile.

Storage is worth checking even when login is slow: a startup disk with too little available space can affect routine reads and writes throughout the session. If you move files to another disk or external storage, do so as a storage-management step, not because the external device is a general startup accelerator.

Activity Monitor is also useful for separating a startup issue from a current workload issue. If one demanding app is consuming most of the available resources, quitting unused apps and testing again may tell you more than removing another login entry. Likewise, if the Mac is slow only when a particular app is open, compatibility or that app’s own workload deserves attention.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Describe the delay. Decide whether the main symptom is a slow sign-in, a busy desktop immediately afterward, or sluggishness that lasts throughout the session.
  2. Check recent changes. Note apps installed or updated shortly before the problem appeared.
  3. Record the baseline. Capture Open at Login entries and enabled Background App Activity permissions so every change can be reversed.
  4. Review Open at Login. Remove only recognized entries you do not need to start automatically.
  5. Review Background App Activity. Disable only background functions that are not important to you.
  6. Restart and compare. Use the same tasks and timing you used to notice the problem.
  7. Isolate a suspect. If the change helped, reintroduce removed login items one at a time, restarting after each.
  8. Check reopening behavior. Turn off unwanted window restoration and inspect app-specific launch settings.
  9. Move beyond startup diagnosis. If the Mac remains slow, inspect storage, memory use, app compatibility, unused open apps, and disk health.

This order keeps the test reversible and prevents a common mistake: disabling useful syncing or update services before establishing that they are related to the symptom. It also gives you a stopping point. Once the evidence shows that the Mac remains slow with login items removed, continuing to delete entries is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not remove every entry just to make the list look empty. Some items provide connections, syncing, updates, or other functions you rely on.
  • Do not treat Open at Login and Background App Activity as duplicates. They answer different questions and must be tested separately.
  • Do not change several settings and restart only once. You will not know which change affected the symptom or which permission caused a missing feature.
  • Do not assume an app that reopens is visible in the login list. Session restoration and software installed by an app can produce the same appearance.
  • Do not promise a fixed speed improvement. The result depends on the items involved and on other conditions affecting the Mac.
  • Do not buy hardware as the first step. The built-in settings and utilities are sufficient for this diagnosis; external storage is relevant only to a separate low-space problem.

What to expect from this process

Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal percentage or time saving from removing login items, and the result depends on which items were running and what else is affecting the Mac. The reliable outcome is diagnostic: you can determine whether automatic launches or background work correlate with the slowdown, preserve the services you need, and identify when the evidence points elsewhere.

No additional product is required. Login Items & Extensions, Activity Monitor, Storage settings, and Disk Utility are built into macOS. External storage is relevant only if you separately need to move files because the startup disk lacks space; it is not a general startup accelerator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will removing an app from Open at Login uninstall it?

No. It only stops the app, document, folder, or connection from opening automatically when you sign in. You can launch the app manually later and restore the entry if needed.

Should I disable every Background App Activity permission?

No. Disable only background work you do not need. Turning it off can stop automatic updates, syncing, notifications, or another expected function; restore permission if that happens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does an app reopen when it is not listed under Open at Login?

The previous session may be restored, the app may have its own launch setting, or it may have installed other software that starts it. Clear “Reopen windows when logging back in,” check Desktop & Dock on macOS Ventura or later, and inspect the app’s preferences.

How can I tell whether a login item caused the slowdown?

Record the list, remove the items being tested, restart, and compare the same symptom. If the Mac improves, add entries back one at a time, restarting after each. Remove the last item again if the problem returns.

What if the Mac is still slow after I remove startup items?

Check Storage for insufficient startup-disk space, Activity Monitor for memory or processing demands, app compatibility, unused open apps, and Disk Utility for disk problems. Startup activity is only one possible cause.

Does an external drive make startup apps launch faster?

No general startup improvement is established. External storage can help only as a place to move files when the startup disk lacks space; it is not required to manage login items or background permissions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do older macOS versions use the same settings paths?

Not always. Current directions use System Settings. Earlier releases may use different names and locations, so follow the path that matches your macOS version.

What does the macOS 27 Golden Gate background-app notification mean?

Apple says macOS 27 shows a notification the first time an app continues running after you quit it and indicates this on the Dock icon. Use it as a prompt to review whether that background function is useful; earlier systems may not show it.

The Bottom Line

Start with System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, but treat Open at Login and Background App Activity as separate controls. Record the baseline, make reversible changes, restart after each test, and restore permissions when a needed feature breaks. If the Mac stays slow, investigate storage, memory, compatibility, open apps, and disk health instead of endlessly deleting startup entries.
