Vanilla Terraria does not provide a documented dedicated-server command for spawning or giving items. To do this server-side, run TShock (or another server tool that supplies equivalent functionality), authenticate with an account or group that has the appropriate permission, then use TShock’s /item (or /i) command for yourself or /give for another player.
The command can fail even when its syntax looks right: the server may be vanilla, your account may lack the permission, the item name may be ambiguous, or a banned-item policy may block it. The steps below isolate those cases and explain where a given item appears after delivery.
First, identify the server software
Item commands depend on the server software, not merely on the Terraria game client. A dedicated server running the vanilla Terraria server software exposes administrative commands such as ban, password, version, time, port, maxplayers, say, and motd. Its documented command reference does not include an item-spawn or item-give command and directs administrators to TShock for additional commands.
Consequently, typing /item, /i, or /give on an otherwise unmodified vanilla server will not add an item. Installing a client mod or having a character with powerful equipment also does not add a server command. The server must run a tool that implements the command and permission system.

If you are not sure, ask the host or inspect the server startup output and configuration files for the server software name. Do not assume that a server advertised simply as “Terraria” has TShock enabled.
What you need before running a TShock item command
A TShock server
TShock must be installed and running as the server layer. The exact installation and update procedure depends on the Terraria version and the TShock release, so use the documentation that matches your server rather than copying files from an unrelated version. The item commands are supplied by TShock; they are not part of the vanilla server executable.

An authenticated administrative account or group
Sign in through the authentication method configured for your server and use an account or group that has the required permission. Being the world owner, knowing the server password, or being able to join the world does not by itself prove that the account can run every TShock command.
The correct permission nodes
TShock separates spawning an item for yourself from giving an item to somebody else:
tshock.item.spawnallows the/itemcommand and its/ialias.tshock.item.giveallows the/givecommand.tshock.item.usebannedcontrols access to items that the server’s banned-item policy blocks.
Grant only the permission needed for the job. A moderator who should be able to help a player may need tshock.item.give, while a builder who only needs materials for their own inventory may need tshock.item.spawn. The banned-item permission is separate; granting a spawn or give permission does not automatically override the banned-item policy.
Spawn an item for yourself with /item or /i
After authentication, enter one of these forms in the command interface available on your server:

/item <item name> [quantity]
/i <item name> [quantity]The brackets indicate an optional value; do not type the brackets. If you omit quantity, TShock uses the item’s maximum stack size. Supplying a quantity lets you request a smaller stack when that is more appropriate for the item or the server’s rules.
Examples with single-word names
/item torch 50
/i wood 200These examples show the syntax pattern: an item name followed, when desired, by a number. The command parser resolves the name against Terraria’s item list and attempts to place the resulting item for the authorized user.
Quote names containing spaces
Multi-word names must be enclosed in quotation marks. For example:
/i "dirt wall"Without quotes, the parser can treat each word as a separate argument and reject the command or resolve it incorrectly. Use the display name as it appears in the game’s item list. Partial names are allowed only when they narrow to exactly one item; a fragment that matches several items is ambiguous and will not safely identify one item.

When to choose the alias
/i is simply the documented short alias for /item. Use whichever is easier to remember; permissions and item behavior are the same because both invoke the item-spawn command.
Give an item to another player with /give
To target a different player, use:
/give <item name> <player name> [quantity]The item name comes first, the recipient’s player name comes second, and the quantity is optional. If quantity is omitted, TShock uses the item’s maximum stack size.

/give "dirt wall" Alex 100These examples illustrate both a single-word item name and a quoted multi-word name. Replace Alex with the recipient’s actual in-game name. If the player name contains spaces or your server’s command parser requires quoting for that name, apply the same quoting convention used by your TShock version.

A user with only tshock.item.spawn should expect /give to be denied, and a user with only tshock.item.give should not assume that /item will work. The permission nodes are intentionally distinct.

Use an exact display name when possible
Exact names reduce ambiguity. Keep capitalization consistent with the item’s displayed name and quote the entire name when it contains spaces. If a partial name is convenient, verify that it matches one item only before confirming the command.
Use the official item-ID table as a lookup reference
Terraria’s official item-ID table lists numeric IDs, display names, and internal names used by the game code. It is useful when you need to distinguish similarly named items or identify the canonical name. The table is a reference, not a replacement for TShock: knowing an ID does not add an item command to a vanilla server and does not grant permission to use TShock commands.
Whether a particular TShock release accepts a numeric ID directly in a command can depend on that release’s command parser. If a numeric entry is rejected, use the corresponding display name and quote it when necessary. Do not infer that an ID from a different Terraria version has the same meaning without checking the current table.

An item name can be valid yet still fail because it matches more than one item or because the server blocks it. Resolve name ambiguity first. If the server reports that the item is banned, an administrator must review the banned-item policy; only a user with tshock.item.usebanned can bypass that restriction, and that permission should be granted sparingly.

Understand where a given item appears
TShock’s delivery behavior depends on Server Side Characters (SSC) and the GiveItemsDirectly option.
SSC enabled with direct delivery enabled
When SSC is enabled, GiveItemsDirectly can insert given items directly into the recipient’s inventory. The TShock documentation labels this behavior experimental and warns that it may not work correctly or may cause item loss. Treat direct insertion as a convenience with risk, not as a guarantee that an item was safely recorded.
SSC disabled or direct delivery not used
In the other documented delivery path, given items appear as dropped items in the world rather than being inserted directly into inventory. The recipient must be present and collect the drop in the normal way. This distinction matters when you are testing a command: a successful response does not necessarily mean that the item will immediately appear in an inventory slot.

Before using direct delivery on a live world, test with a low-value item and confirm the result under the same SSC settings. For valuable or irreplaceable items, a dropped-item workflow may be easier to observe, while direct insertion may be more convenient but carries the documented experimental risk.
A complete, low-risk procedure
- Confirm the software. Verify that the server is TShock rather than the vanilla dedicated server. If it is vanilla, stop: there is no documented built-in item command to run.
- Confirm your identity. Authenticate with the account or group that should perform the operation. Do not test permissions with an unverified account.
- Check the permission. Use
tshock.item.spawnfor your own item ortshock.item.givefor another player. Checktshock.item.usebannedonly when the server administrator deliberately allows banned-item access. - Resolve the item name. Prefer the exact display name. Quote names containing spaces and use the official ID table to disambiguate similar entries.
- Start with a controlled quantity. Supply a quantity instead of relying on the maximum stack when testing. This reduces accidental overproduction and makes it easier to verify delivery.
- Run the appropriate command. Use
/itemor/ifor yourself, and/givefollowed by the recipient’s name for another player. - Verify the delivery path. Look in the inventory when direct insertion is configured, or search the nearby world for a dropped item when it is not.
- Record the result. If the command succeeds, note the item name, quantity, permissions, and SSC setting for future administrators. If it fails, use the troubleshooting branches below rather than repeatedly issuing the same command.
Why the command does not work
“Unknown command” or no item command is recognized
This usually indicates a vanilla server or a server tool that is not loaded. Check the server software first. TShock commands cannot be enabled by changing the Terraria client; the server administrator must install and run the tool that provides them.
“Permission denied”
Check the exact node, not just the user’s general rank. The self-spawn command requires tshock.item.spawn; the player-targeting command requires tshock.item.give. A group can have one and not the other. If the item is banned, a separate tshock.item.usebanned decision applies.

The parser says the item is not found or ambiguous
Replace a partial name with the exact display name, and quote every multi-word name. Consult the official item-ID table to identify the correct display or internal name. Avoid guessing from an internal name when the command expects a display name.
The command reports success but the item is not in inventory
Check the SSC and GiveItemsDirectly settings. With the non-direct path, the item is a world drop and must be collected. With direct insertion, inspect the inventory and server logs carefully because the option is experimental and can fail or lose items.
The recipient never sees the item
Confirm the spelling of the player name, that the intended player is online and in the relevant world, and whether the server uses dropped-item delivery. A successful /give invocation does not change the command’s target if the name was resolved to a different player.
A numeric ID is rejected
Use the item’s display name instead. The official ID table is a lookup aid; command support for numeric input can vary with the TShock release. Do not treat a rejected ID as evidence that the item itself is unavailable.
Administration and safety practices
- Separate duties. Grant self-spawn and player-give permissions independently so a helper can perform only the operation required.
- Keep banned-item policy explicit. Decide which items are restricted and who, if anyone, receives
tshock.item.usebanned. - Test outside the main build area. Dropped items can be collected by the wrong player, while direct insertion can behave unexpectedly under SSC.
- Use conservative quantities. Omitted quantities default to the maximum stack, which may be much more than a player intended to receive.
- Audit unusual grants. Record the administrator, recipient, item, quantity, and delivery mode when the server’s community or economy depends on item scarcity.
- Update deliberately. Terraria, TShock, and plugins must remain compatible. Recheck command behavior and permissions after an update rather than assuming an older setup is unchanged.

Bottom line for vanilla and TShock servers
There is no documented vanilla Terraria dedicated-server command that spawns an item. On TShock, use /item or /i with tshock.item.spawn to create an item for yourself, and use /give with tshock.item.give to target another player. Quote multi-word names, remember that an omitted quantity means the maximum stack, and check SSC delivery settings before assuming the item was inserted directly into an inventory.
