Put an item in your household recycling bin only if your local collection program accepts it. Empty and reasonably clean accepted containers, keep paper clean and dry, and use a separate collection route for items such as plastic bags, batteries, and electronics. Recycling rules vary by address, so check your city, county, or waste hauler’s current list before you sort.
What can I put in my recycling bin?
In the United States, commonly accepted curbside materials may include cardboard, paper, food boxes, mail, beverage and food cans, glass bottles and jars, jugs, and plastic bottles. These are examples, not a universal acceptance list: some local programs do not take glass or certain plastics, and some require materials to be separated rather than mixed. Check your local provider’s instructions for your address. The EPA explains that local programs differ in both accepted materials and collection methods: EPA recycling FAQs and EPA guidance on common recyclables.
A plastic resin identification number does not guarantee that an item is accepted by your curbside program. The relevant question is whether your local collector and sorting facility accept that specific material.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare common items the way your program asks
- Cardboard: Empty boxes and flatten them if your local instructions request it.
- Paper and food boxes: Recycle only clean, dry paper products accepted locally. EPA’s general guidance says pizza boxes may be recyclable when food scraps are removed, but local paper rules can differ.
- Cans, bottles, jars, and jugs: Check that the material and container type are accepted before putting it in the bin.
- Caps and lids: EPA includes caps among common recyclable items, but follow your provider’s instructions on whether to leave them attached or separate them.
Do I need to rinse containers before recycling?
Empty containers and remove food or liquid. For plastic, metal, and glass, rinse or scrape away food debris; paper should be clean and dry. The goal is reasonably clean, not perfectly washed: EPA describes some food containers as “spatula-clean.” Local instructions take precedence if they specify a different preparation method. See the EPA’s recycling basics.

Food and liquid residue can contaminate materials that would otherwise be recyclable. If a paper item is soaked or heavily soiled with food, check your local rules rather than putting it in the bin automatically.
Can plastic bags go in the recycling bin?
As a general rule, do not put plastic bags, wraps, or other plastic film in a household curbside recycling bin. Some grocery or retail locations offer separate film collection, but acceptance varies; confirm that the collection point takes the specific item. EPA provides guidance on plastic film and other recycling options.

What should never go in my recycling bin?
There is no single list that applies to every U.S. collection program, but keep these items out of curbside recycling unless your local provider explicitly directs otherwise:
- Batteries and household hazardous waste: Paint, solvents, pesticides, and batteries need an appropriate local collection route. Battery instructions can depend on battery chemistry and local rules.
- Electronics and textiles: These commonly require a separate drop-off, take-back, or reuse option.
- Plastic bags and wraps: Use a confirmed separate film-collection option where available.
- Food and food-soiled paper: Do not put food itself in recycling; check local guidance for soiled paper, composting, or disposal.
- Other unusual or potentially hazardous objects: Items such as garden hoses, sewing needles, bowling balls, propane cylinders, and nonempty aerosol cans are among examples the EPA says not to put in household recycling. Check local guidance for the correct route rather than assuming one disposal method fits every item.
For batteries and household hazardous waste, ask your local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency about collection events, permanent drop-off centers, or appropriate retailers. EPA’s common-recyclables guidance and household hazardous waste guidance explain why these materials need special handling.

How do I check local recycling rules?
- Find the recycling instructions for your address on your city or county website, or your waste hauler’s website or service materials.
- Look up the specific item, including its material and condition. Do not assume that a symbol, resin number, or acceptance elsewhere means it belongs in your bin.
- Check the required preparation and collection method: for example, whether to rinse, flatten, separate, or use a different bin or drop-off point.
- If the instructions do not address the item, contact the provider or leave it out of recycling until you can confirm the right route.
This avoids “wishcycling”—putting an uncertain item in the bin in the hope that it can be sorted later. The EPA warns: “Putting items in the recycling bin that can’t be recycled can contaminate the recycling stream.” Nonaccepted items may need to be removed and landfilled, increase sorting and disposal costs, or damage processing equipment.
