At the Cliff Stone Dais in Chapter 2 of Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways, press the three pedestal symbols at positions 1, 4 and 7, counting around the circular layout from the top. You can press them in any order. Once all three are selected, the cliffside door opens and the route toward the Church becomes available.

The Cliffside door solution at a glance

This is the environmental-symbol puzzle in the Cliffs area of Chapter 2, while Ada is making her way toward the Church. The locked door is next to a circular Stone Dais (also called the Cliff Stone Dais). Three bright-yellow markings hidden around the area correspond to three positions on that dais.

  • Required positions: 1, 4 and 7.
  • How to count: Start with the position at the top of the circular arrangement and count around the layout.
  • Input order: Any order works; there is no sequence to memorize.
  • Result: Selecting all three correct positions unlocks the door leading onward toward the Church.

If you only need to continue, return to the dais and select 1, 4 and 7. The exploration instructions below show how each clue is found and why those three positions are correct.

Where this puzzle appears

You encounter the puzzle in Chapter 2, in the Cliffs section of Separate Ways. Ada reaches a locked door with a pedestal nearby. The yellow symbols are not written on a note or displayed in a conventional inventory puzzle; they are painted into the surrounding scenery. Because one clue is above the normal path and another is split across surfaces, the puzzle is designed to be solved by looking around the whole area.

  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. • Reimagined Story – Resident Evil 4 dials up the original release’s key feelings of loneliness and the fear of enemies blinded by zealotry, while providing more nuanced depictions of the character motivations and relationships that defined the 2005 survival horror icon.

Stand near the locked door first. From there, the three clues can be checked in a practical order: the marking beside the door, the marking on the cliff wall, and the marking visible from the upper wooden platform.

Find all three yellow symbols

1. Inspect the wall immediately to the right of the door

Face the locked door and look at the wall directly to its right. A bright-yellow symbol is painted there. This is the easiest clue to miss if you walk straight to the pedestal without turning the camera toward the doorway.

You do not need to interact with the paint. Treat it as a visual reference, then continue looking for the other two markings before using the dais. The clue is positioned close enough to the door that you can recheck it at any time.

2. Turn toward the grapple route and inspect the cliff wall

From the pedestal, turn around and look toward the grapple point and the higher catwalk. The second yellow marking is on the cliff wall behind or near that route. It is part of the same environmental clue set, so compare its shape with the marking beside the door rather than searching for a separate object to pick up.

If the wall seems blank, adjust your position and camera toward the grapple point and upper catwalk. The marking is viewed from the lower area; you do not have to reach the upper platform to identify this second clue.

3. Grapple to the upper platform and look down

Use the grapple point to reach the upper wooden platform. Walk to the platform’s far end, then look down toward the surfaces below. The third yellow marking is split across those surfaces. From the wrong angle it looks like unrelated fragments, but moving the camera until the pieces line up reveals one complete symbol.

This is the clue that most often causes confusion. Do not assume that separate-looking paint marks represent multiple buttons. The pieces belong together when viewed from the intended position at the far end of the platform.

Clue Where to stand or look What to do
Door-side marking At the locked door, facing the wall immediately to its right Use the yellow symbol as the first environmental reference
Cliff-wall marking Near the pedestal, looking toward the grapple point and higher catwalk Inspect the yellow paint on the cliff wall
Overhead marking At the far end of the upper wooden platform, looking down Adjust the camera until the split pieces align into one symbol

How to read the Stone Dais

Return to the circular pedestal after checking the clues. The buttons are arranged around a circular layout. Begin at the button at the top and count the positions around the circle until you identify positions 1, 4 and 7. The solution is based on the positions of the symbols, not on entering a special combination of button presses.

Resident Evil 4 - PlayStation 4 Standard Edition
  • Legendary Visuals - Resident Evil 4 features a breathtaking visual style and effects.
  • Behind the Camera View - The camera follows you from behind and allows for intuitive and comfortable movement in this survival horror third-person shooter.
  • Hordes of Enemies - Tackle creatures that defy the laws of nature, including horrific new creatures infested by a threat called Las Plagas.
  • Advanced AI - Enemies are smarter than ever and will use their cunning abilities to team up and attack the player en masse.
  • Mercenaries Mode - A fast-paced test of skill where you can play as fan favorites like Wesker or Hunk on a mission to wipe out hordes of enemies to earn the high score

Position 1 is the top starting point. Position 4 and position 7 are the other two required locations reached by continuing the count around the same circle. If the interface highlights a button as you move over it, use the position number in the layout rather than trying to reproduce the order in which you found the painted clues.

Enter the solution step by step

  1. Approach the Stone Dais beside the cliffside door.
  2. Orient yourself to the top of the circle. Use the uppermost position as the starting point for counting.
  3. Select position 1.
  4. Select position 4.
  5. Select position 7.
  6. Wait for the puzzle to register all three selections. The door unlocks after the complete set has been entered.
  7. Go through the opened door to continue along the route toward the Church.

There is no required order between 1, 4 and 7. Entering them in the order 1-4-7 is simply an easy way to avoid losing track; 4-1-7, 7-4-1, or any other order produces the same unlock as long as all three positions are selected.

If the door does not open

Check that all three positions were selected

The door opens only after positions 1, 4 and 7 have all been selected. If one input was missed, return to the dais and check each of those three positions again.

Recount from the top

The most common mistake is starting the count from a side button or counting the visible paint marks instead of the pedestal positions. Reorient the circular layout, identify the top position as 1, and count around the circle to 4 and 7.

Do not search for a fourth clue

There are three required yellow symbols and three required pedestal positions. The split marking below the upper platform is one symbol viewed from an angle, not two additional clues.

Revisit the upper-platform viewpoint

If the third clue looked incomplete, grapple back to the upper wooden platform, walk all the way to its far end, and look down. Move the camera until the pieces on the surfaces below align. Looking from the approach side or stopping short of the platform’s end can leave the symbol visually fragmented.

Use the direct solution when you are stuck

You do not have to identify every painted marking to progress. Selecting positions 1, 4 and 7 at the dais is the complete solution. The clue hunt is useful for understanding the environmental design, but it does not create a different reward or alternate door state.

Exploring the clues versus entering 1-4-7 directly

There are no alternate valid combinations. The choice is whether to inspect the environment first or use the known pedestal positions immediately.

Approach Best for What it involves Outcome
Explore the three clues Players who want to understand the puzzle naturally Inspect the wall beside the door, the cliff wall near the grapple route, and the split marking from the upper platform Unlocks the door after entering 1, 4 and 7
Use the direct answer Players focused on progressing quickly Go to the Stone Dais and select positions 1, 4 and 7 from the top Unlocks the same door and the same route toward the Church

Why the 1-4-7 layout is easy to misread

The puzzle combines three different viewing problems. The first marking is beside the door, so it can be overlooked when attention is fixed on the pedestal. The second is placed away from the dais on a cliff wall near the grapple route. The third requires vertical movement and a deliberate camera adjustment because its paint is divided across surfaces.

The dais itself adds another source of error: its circular buttons must be counted from a fixed starting point. Counting from the position nearest Ada, from the first clue discovered, or from a side of the circle changes the result. Always use the top of the circular arrangement as the beginning of the count.

Edition and platform context

The puzzle is part of the Resident Evil 4 remake’s Separate Ways campaign. Separate Ways is available in the remake ecosystem on Windows PC through Steam, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. On a Resident Evil 4 remake PS5 edition, the same Chapter 2 Cliffs solution applies. Exact bundle contents and regional availability can vary, so confirm that the Separate Ways content is included with the edition you are playing.

What happens after the solve

When the three correct pedestal positions have been selected, the cliffside door opens. This is a progression gate rather than an optional treasure lock: the opened passage continues Ada’s route toward the Church. Once the door has opened, leave the dais area through the passage and continue the Chapter 2 route.
