Pixel puzzles that show numbers beside every row and column are usually nonograms—also called Picross, Griddlers, Hanjie, or Paint by Numbers. To solve one, treat each number as the length of a consecutive run of filled cells, keep separate runs in the listed order, and use the crossing rows and columns to prove which cells are filled or empty. This guide covers that standard row-and-column format; some games use “pixel puzzle” for other rule sets, so check a particular game’s instructions before applying these methods.

The goal is not to guess the picture. It is to satisfy every clue in both directions until the filled cells reveal the image. The core rules are summarized in the ItsyBitsy Games beginner guide and the Nonograms.games tutorial.

What a pixel puzzle is—and what the numbers mean

A standard nonogram is a rectangular grid with clues printed along its top and left edges. Each row and column has its own sequence of numbers. A number counts filled cells in one continuous run; it is not a coordinate, a color code, or a list of individual cell positions.

Read clues as ordered runs

A clue of 3 2 means “three filled cells, then—later in the same line—two filled cells.” The two runs must appear in that order. They cannot overlap, and there must be at least one empty cell between them. The line could therefore look like ■■■□■■, with additional empty cells possible at either end if the line is longer.

A single clue such as 4 means one run of four filled cells. A clue of 1 1 1 means three separate single filled cells, with at least one empty cell separating each pair. The spaces between runs are mandatory even when the puzzle does not explicitly print them.

Rows and columns describe the same cells

Every square belongs to one row clue and one column clue. A filled square that is certain from a row immediately constrains its column; an empty square does the same in reverse. Solving is therefore an alternating process rather than a left-to-right march through the grid.

Zero clues

A zero clue means the line contains no filled cells. If the game allows X marks, mark every cell in that row or column empty. On paper, lightly cross out the entire line. The Nonograms.games guide describes zero clues and other basic deductions for beginners.

The spacing rule and the minimum-length test

Before placing anything, calculate how much space a clue sequence needs at minimum. For a line of length L with clues a1 through ak, the minimum required length is:

sum of all run lengths + one separator for each gap = Σai + (k − 1)

The separators are the required empty cells between neighboring runs. End spaces are optional.

When the minimum equals the line length

If the minimum exactly equals the line length, the entire arrangement is fixed. For a six-cell line with clues 2 1 2, the minimum is 2 + 1 + 2 + 2 separators = 7, so that sequence cannot fit in six cells. A six-cell line with clues 2 1 1 needs 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 6; its only legal pattern is ■■□■□■.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A clue equal to the line length is the simplest special case: a five-cell line with clue 5 is entirely filled. The same principle applies to several clues when their runs and mandatory gaps consume every available cell.

When there is spare space

If the minimum is shorter than the line, the sequence can slide. Do not fill every cell in every possible placement. Instead, find the cells that are occupied in all legal placements. Those overlapping cells are proven filled; cells that vary between placements remain unknown.

How overlap deductions work

Overlap is the most useful beginner technique after full lines and zero clues. Imagine the leftmost legal placement of a run and the rightmost legal placement. Any cells covered by both placements must be filled.

Example: a four-cell run in five cells

For a five-cell line with clue 4, the run can start in cell 1 or cell 2:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leftmost placement: ■■■■□
  • Rightmost placement: □■■■■

The middle three cells are filled in both arrangements, so cells 2–4 are certain even though the two end cells are not. This is a worked illustration of the rule, not a puzzle statistic; the same overlap logic applies to longer lines.

Example with a separated sequence

Consider a seven-cell line with clues 3 2. The minimum is six cells, leaving one extra cell that can be placed at the left end, right end, or around the runs while preserving their order and one-cell separator. List only placements that respect any marks already on the grid. If a square appears in every remaining placement, fill it. If a square appears in some but not all placements, leave it unknown.

Use existing marks to narrow placements

An X inside a potential run can eliminate that placement. Conversely, a filled square can force a run to include it, sometimes fixing the run’s start or end. Recalculate the legal placements after every confirmed cell or empty cell instead of relying on the original uncluttered line.

A reliable beginner solving routine

The following loop works for paper puzzles and most digital versions of standard nonograms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Scan for immediate wins. Check every row and column for a clue equal to the line length, a zero clue, or a clue sequence whose minimum length equals the line length.
  2. Mark forced cells. Apply overlap to long runs that can slide. Fill only cells common to every legal placement.
  3. Record proven empties. Put an X or another empty mark wherever a separator, line edge, completed run, or contradiction proves that a cell cannot be filled. Empty marks are a solving aid, not a separate rule.
  4. Switch direction. Inspect the columns crossing every newly filled or emptied cell. A single update can turn a previously vague column into a full-line or overlap deduction.
  5. Finish constrained lines. When a run’s length is complete, mark the cells immediately outside it empty where the clue requires separation or where no additional run can fit.
  6. Repeat the row-column cycle. Continue alternating directions until no legal deduction remains.
  7. Recheck rather than guess. If the grid stops yielding information, review placements and marks. Do not fill a cell merely because it makes the emerging image look recognizable.

The same scan-and-cross-check approach is recommended in the June 13, 2026 ItsyBitsy Games guide and the Nonograms.games beginner instructions.

How to place a single run

Start with the line’s boundaries

For a clue 5 in a ten-cell line, the run can begin in any of the first six positions. If a column already contains an X in position 3, every placement that would cover position 3 is illegal. The remaining placements may force the run toward one side or create an overlap that was not visible before.

Use a completed run to create empties

Suppose a line has clue 3 and you have proven cells 4–6 are filled. That run is complete. Cells immediately adjacent to it cannot be filled as part of the same run, so mark cells 3 and 7 empty when those positions exist. If the line has additional clues, an adjacent cell might belong to a different run only if the required separator and clue order still fit; never mark it empty without checking the complete clue sequence.

Do not extend a run through an X

A common error is to fill around a known empty cell and accidentally join two runs. A clue 2 2 cannot become four connected cells. The X between its runs is what preserves the required separation.

How to solve lines with several clues

Multiple clues are more constrained than they first appear because both run order and separators matter.

Account for every mandatory gap

For clues 1 3 2, reserve two separator cells before considering optional end spaces. The minimum is 1 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 8. In an eight-cell line, the pattern is fixed as ■□■■■□■■. In a longer line, slide the entire sequence and inspect overlaps, but never remove either required gap.

Use a filled cell to identify its run

If a line has clues 2 4 and a proven filled cell lies near the far right, test whether it can belong to the first run. If doing so would leave too few cells for the later run and its separator, that possibility is eliminated; the cell must belong to the four-cell run. This kind of “which clue can contain this cell?” test is often stronger than treating the line as one undifferentiated string.

Separate completed groups

Once all cells in one run are known, mark the required separator cells around it. Then solve the remaining left and right sections against the clues that remain in order. A completed group does not automatically complete the line: all other clues still need space and must be checked against the crossing direction.

Why crossing clues are the real engine

A row deduction is useful because it changes a column, and a column deduction is useful because it changes a row. For example, if a row’s clue forces its third cell to be filled, inspect the third column immediately. That filled cell may complete a vertical run, force a separator, or rule out several placements.

Work from the most constrained crossings

Prioritize lines with:

  • a clue equal to the line length;
  • a zero clue;
  • a minimum length only one or two cells shorter than the line;
  • several known filled or empty cells;
  • a run that has just been completed or tightly bounded.

There is no requirement to solve rows before columns. Choose whichever direction currently contains the strongest evidence.

Check both directions before trusting a picture

An attractive partial image is not proof. Every row and every column must match its clue sequence, including run order and mandatory gaps. A line that “looks right” can still hide one extra filled cell or a missing separator.

What to mark, and how to avoid losing information

Filled cells

Use one consistent symbol for a confirmed filled cell. In a digital game, this may be a primary fill action; in a paper puzzle, shade the square lightly enough to revise if needed. Do not treat a tentative guess as confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Empty cells

Use X marks, dots, or another distinct symbol for proven empties. Marking empties prevents accidental run extensions and makes the remaining unknown cells easier to see. If the interface has separate fill and cross modes, verify which mode is active before clicking repeatedly.

Unknown cells

Leave uncertain squares blank. Blank does not mean empty; it means unresolved. Confusing those states is one of the fastest ways to create a false contradiction.

Troubleshooting when the grid seems stuck

No line produces a deduction

Recalculate the minimum length of each clue sequence and compare the leftmost and rightmost legal placements. Then inspect whether an existing X was placed too early or whether a filled cell was assumed rather than proved. Standard clue-based solving may reach a point where beginner deductions alone do not identify a unique next move; the guides cited here establish the mechanics, not a guarantee that every puzzle marketed under every label is uniquely solvable by this routine.

A line appears impossible

Stop and audit the line before changing unrelated cells:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the clues in their printed order.
  2. Count filled runs, not just filled cells.
  3. Check that separate runs have at least one empty cell between them.
  4. Confirm that every X is genuinely proven.
  5. Look at the crossing clue that caused the latest placement.

If the contradiction remains, undo the most recent uncertain action rather than forcing another square.

The picture looks wrong

Do not use the image as a correction mechanism. Nonograms are solved from constraints. A recognizable shape can be misleading, especially near the middle of a puzzle where several placements remain possible. Return to legal run placements and let the row and column clues decide.

A completed row does not finish the puzzle

A row is complete only when its filled runs and empty separators match its clue. The puzzle is complete only after every column also matches its clue. Use the crossing lines as an independent verification pass.

Paper and digital solving differences

On paper

Write the clues with enough space to annotate them, shade confirmed cells, and use a visibly different mark for empties. If a line has many possible placements, list candidate patterns in the margin and cross out candidates as intersections rule them out. Keep the original clues readable; erasing a clue or merging an X into shading can create avoidable mistakes.

In a digital game

Look for separate controls for filling and marking an empty cell. Labels and gestures differ by game, so read its help screen before starting. Some interfaces automatically flag errors, while others allow mistakes without warning; treat automatic feedback as a convenience, not as a substitute for checking both clue directions.

How to practice efficiently

Begin with small grids whose clues contain several full lines or near-full sequences. Practice one skill at a time:

  • identify clues equal to line length;
  • calculate minimum lengths for multi-run clues;
  • find overlap in a sliding run;
  • mark separators after a run is complete;
  • switch from a changed row to its crossing columns;
  • verify all lines at the end.

A paper nonogram puzzle book can provide more repetition, and the Andrews University worksheet demonstrates the grid format. No particular book, edition, price, or availability is established here, so choose any current collection that clearly states it uses standard row-and-column nonogram rules.

When “pixel puzzle” uses different mechanics

Names vary by publisher and region. Picross, Griddlers, Hanjie, Paint by Numbers, and nonogram commonly refer to the same run-clue format, but a game may add colors, multiple layers, special cells, or other rules. The standard method in this guide assumes monochrome cells, ordered run lengths, and one mandatory empty cell between separate runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before solving a new title, confirm:

  • whether numbers count consecutive cells or something else;
  • whether runs must remain in the printed order;
  • whether one empty separator is required between runs;
  • whether colors create separate or combined runs;
  • whether the game permits marks for known empty cells;
  • whether errors are flagged immediately.

If any of those rules differ, use the game’s own instructions instead of transferring standard nonogram deductions unchanged. The available beginner references document standard nonogram mechanics, not every variant sold as a pixel puzzle.

Quick reference: the deductions to remember

Situation What it proves Action
Clue equals line length Every cell is filled Fill the whole line
Zero clue No cell is filled Mark the whole line empty
Minimum clue length equals line length All runs and separators are fixed Fill runs and mark gaps
Run slides between two extremes Overlapping cells are always filled Fill only the overlap
Run is complete It cannot extend farther Mark valid adjacent separators empty
Cell conflicts with every legal placement The cell is empty Mark it X or equivalent
Row or column changes Its crossing line has new information Switch directions and recalculate

The essential discipline is simple: numbers describe ordered filled runs, separate runs need empty space, and every deduction must survive both its row and its column. Fill only what the clues prove, mark what they exclude, and let the crossings reveal the hidden pixel image.
