To solve NYT Connections consistently, do not grab the first four words that seem related. Scan all 16 words, describe each proposed category in a precise phrase, test every candidate against the remaining board, and commit only when the full set can be divided into four groups of four. That whole-board check is the best defense against deliberate overlaps.

Connections gives you 16 words and one intended solution: four groups containing four words each. Yellow marks the easiest category and Purple the trickiest; the official rules describe these as relative difficulty colors, not as fixed types of wordplay.

What NYT Connections is actually asking you to do

The New York Times Help Center defines Connections as a word game built around a 16-word board. Your task is to identify four groups of four items that share something in common. The words and categories are curated with the Oxford Dictionary, and every puzzle has one intended solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The difficulty colors are useful for pacing, but they are not a reliable category taxonomy. Yellow is the easiest group and Purple is the trickiest. The official explanation does not say that a particular color always means, for example, a pun, a proper name, a historical reference or a particular grammatical pattern. Treat color as a relative difficulty signal rather than a shortcut to the answer.

The central complication is intentional overlap. A word can appear to fit more than one category, and a tempting set of four can be wrong even when every word has a plausible connection. The correct answer is the partition that leaves three equally coherent groups after one group is removed.

A repeatable solving workflow

1. Scan the entire board before selecting anything

Read all 16 words at least once without trying to solve them in order. Mark obvious relationships mentally, but delay commitment. An early, familiar group can hide a second interpretation for one of its words.

  • Look for direct meanings, such as several words that name the same kind of object.
  • Notice less literal links, including shared word forms, names, titles, abbreviations or phrases in which the words commonly appear.
  • Keep an eye on unusual spellings, capitalization and parts of speech. These details can distinguish a deliberate category from a merely broad theme.

This first pass is a practical solving habit, not a published New York Times algorithm. Its purpose is to prevent tunnel vision before you understand the board’s competing patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Write a short category phrase for every promising set

For each candidate group, state the connection in a compact phrase: “___ that can follow this word,” “___ that are types of ___,” or “___ associated with ___.” If you cannot explain all four words with the same wording, the group is not ready.

A precise phrase exposes weak members. “Things related to travel” is usually too broad; “words that can precede a specific noun” or “four names of a particular class” gives you a testable rule. The phrase should apply equally to every member without special pleading.

3. Test the fourth word, not just the first three

Many wrong guesses feel convincing because three words form a strong mini-theme and the fourth is merely adjacent. Ask what makes the fourth word belong under exactly the same rule. If it requires a different relationship, keep the set provisional.

Also test whether another unused word fits the same phrase better. When five or more words seem to qualify, you have found an overlap problem, not a completed category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check for overlap before submitting

The official rules warn that words may fit multiple categories. When a word belongs to two plausible groups, list both possibilities and compare what each choice does to the remaining 12 words.

  • Option A: remove the four-word set and inspect whether the remaining words can form three clean groups.
  • Option B: reserve the ambiguous word for the competing set and see whether the first group still has a valid fourth member.
  • Prefer the arrangement that gives every remaining word a specific, defensible home.

Do not choose the group with the most obvious individual links. Choose the group that creates the strongest complete partition.

5. Use elimination only after you have a real rule

Elimination is powerful when three categories are secure and four words remain. It is dangerous when used to rescue a vague first guess. Before treating the leftovers as a final group, articulate their shared rule just as carefully as the earlier groups.

6. Re-evaluate the board after every confirmed group

Once you have a group you trust, remove those four words conceptually and reread the remaining 12. The visual and semantic context changes when distracting words disappear. A word that seemed isolated may reveal a phrase or naming pattern only after the strongest decoys are out of the way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Submit only when the full partition makes sense

Before committing, perform a final four-part check:

  1. Can you state one short category phrase for each group?
  2. Does every group contain exactly four words?
  3. Does every word fit its assigned phrase without an exception?
  4. Do the four groups together account for all 16 words?
  5. Is any alternative assignment more coherent for the ambiguous word?

If one answer is no, keep solving rather than submitting the attractive but incomplete set.

8. Review the reasoning, not just the result

After finishing, identify which word caused the ambiguity and which category wording resolved it. This turns a lucky solve into a reusable pattern-recognition lesson. Record the category type and the misleading alternative, not merely whether you were right.

How to spot categories without overfitting

Meaning-based groups

Start with direct semantic relationships because they are easiest to verify. The key is specificity. A group should describe a defined class, not a loose association that could absorb half the board. Ask whether a dictionary-style definition would include all four words and exclude the obvious distractors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phrase and word-position groups

Some categories depend on how a word combines with another word rather than on its standalone meaning. Try placing a candidate before or after a common term, title or expression. Check the exact position: “can follow X” and “can precede X” are different rules. Do not accept a phrase that works only with a highly unusual or improvised wording.

Names, titles and other proper references

Capitalization, familiar names and references can create categories that look unrelated at first. Verify that all four items belong to the same kind of reference. A single famous example does not make a category; the rule must cover the full set.

Word-form and grammatical clues

Look for shared prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, alternate meanings or words that change category when a letter is added or removed. These are easy to miss because the connection may be structural rather than topical. State the transformation explicitly so that a near-match does not slip through.

Broad themes are warning signs

“Things found in a house,” “words associated with work” or “items seen in media” are usually too broad to be safe on their own. If a theme could plausibly include many unused words, narrow it by asking what exact property the four share.

How to handle the board’s deliberate traps

When five words fit one apparent category

Do not break the tie by choosing the four you noticed first. Compare the competing four-word subsets. For each subset, write the category phrase and then test the leftover word against the remaining board. The correct choice is the one that preserves three precise groups, not necessarily the one with the most obvious surface similarity.

When one word fits two categories

Mark that word as reserved rather than assigning it immediately. Solve the unambiguous members of both candidate groups, then see which arrangement leaves a complete set of four. A valid category that strands another word is weaker than a slightly less obvious category that completes the entire board.

When a category has only three certain members

Search the rest of the board for a fourth word that follows the same rule exactly. If the proposed fourth member works only through a different sense, spelling or reference, treat it as a decoy until the whole partition supports it.

When the last four words look unrelated

Recheck the category type. The final group may use a phrase, a name, a word-form operation or another indirect relationship rather than a shared topic. Re-read the four words together and test alternate meanings before concluding that the puzzle is inconsistent.

The whole-board test: a practical decision framework

Connections is best treated as a constraint problem. Every choice changes the possibilities for the other 12 words. Use this simple worksheet mentally or on paper:

  1. Candidate: write the four words you think belong together.
  2. Rule: state the shortest exact phrase that covers all four.
  3. Conflicts: list any unused words that also appear to fit.
  4. Remainder: describe possible groups among the 12 words left behind.
  5. Decision: keep, revise or discard the candidate based on the quality of the remainder.

A candidate with a brilliant local connection but two incoherent leftover groups should lose to a candidate that makes all four categories precise. This is an inference from the official one-solution rule, but it is the most reliable way to manage intentional ambiguity.

Using colors without making unsupported assumptions

Yellow indicates the easiest category and Purple the trickiest, with the other colors representing intermediate difficulty. Use that information to choose a starting point if you want a low-risk entry, but do not assume a color identifies a particular kind of connection. The official Help Center does not assign a fixed semantic pattern to each color.

If you see an obvious Yellow group, still run the remainder test before selecting it. Difficulty color does not override the requirement that the other 12 words must divide cleanly into three groups.

What evidence says about intuition and language models

A 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics paper studied NYT Connections as a word-relationship reasoning task. Its experiment analyzed 100 puzzles centered around the corpus’s median difficulty rating and compared one-try, no-hint and “one away” hint conditions.

In the paper’s Full Hints setup, the three human evaluators averaged 60.67% performance, while the best-performing tested model, Claude 3.5, reached 40.25%. Those figures show that shallow similarity is not enough in the tested conditions, but they are not a universal estimate of human solving ability or a ranking of every language model. The sample involved only three human evaluators and 100 puzzles.

For human solvers, the practical lesson is to explain the relationship and test the complete partition instead of trusting the first semantic resemblance. A word that looks close to several neighbors is exactly where explicit reasoning matters most.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Locking in the first obvious group

Symptom: You see four related words and immediately select them.

Correction: Name the rule, identify any fifth word that might fit, and inspect the 12-word remainder before committing.

Accepting a vague category

Symptom: The explanation is “they are all related to” a broad topic.

Ignoring alternate meanings

Symptom: You read every word in its most common sense.

Correction: Test dictionary senses, grammatical roles, word combinations and proper-reference possibilities. The curated word list can exploit a less dominant meaning.

Solving groups independently

Symptom: Each proposed group looks acceptable on its own, but the final words do not form a category.

Correction: Evaluate every candidate as part of the four-group partition. A local match is not enough.

Using color as a rule

Symptom: You reject a category because it does not match an assumed color pattern.

Correction: Treat color only as relative difficulty. The official material does not define fixed category types for the colors.

Seeking help too early

Symptom: You open a community discussion while still trying to solve.

A compact checklist for every puzzle

  • Read all 16 words before selecting anything.
  • Mark direct and indirect relationships.
  • Describe each candidate group in one exact phrase.
  • Check whether a fifth word also fits.
  • Reserve ambiguous words until competing groups are tested.
  • Remove a proposed group mentally and solve the remaining board.
  • Confirm four groups of exactly four with no exceptions.
  • Use colors as difficulty cues, not category definitions.
  • Review the misleading word after the solve so the pattern becomes reusable.

The safest habit is simple: never ask only “Do these four words match?” Ask “If these four are removed, can the other 12 still become three precise groups?” That question aligns your solving process with Connections’ one-solution design and prevents most avoidable mistakes.
