The reliable way to solve a circular seating puzzle is to convert every clue into a seat constraint. Draw the circle, record who faces the center or outside, anchor a definite relationship such as an opposite seat, translate left and right from the named person’s viewpoint, and then test every surviving arrangement against every clue.
Do not treat the circle like a straight row or assume that the first arrangement you sketch is unique. Seats wrap around, orientation can reverse left and right, and unresolved alternatives must remain in play until a clue eliminates them.
What makes circular seating puzzles different?
In a row, each position has a fixed left and right edge. A circle has no first or last seat: moving past the final position returns you to the first. That changes how you count distance, interpret adjacency, and judge whether two diagrams are genuinely different.

A second complication is viewpoint. Inward-facing and outward-facing people use opposite left-right mappings. A clue such as “B is to the left of A” cannot be placed correctly until you know which way A faces. In a mixed-facing puzzle, the rule belongs to the person named as the viewpoint, not to the group as a whole.

Finally, an unlabeled circle can be rotated. If every person moves one seat clockwise but their order relative to one another is unchanged, it is the same circular arrangement. You may choose any person as a temporary anchor; that is bookkeeping, not an additional clue.
The left-and-right rule
| Facing direction of the named person | That person’s left | That person’s right |
|---|---|---|
| Facing the center | Clockwise | Anticlockwise |
| Facing outside | Anticlockwise | Clockwise |
Imagine standing in the named person’s position and looking in the direction they face. For an inward-facing person, the clockwise neighbor is on that person’s left. For an outward-facing person, the clockwise neighbor is on that person’s right. This viewpoint test prevents the common mistake of using the direction that appears left or right on your page.
How do I know which way is left in a circle?
Write a small arrow beside each seat showing the person’s facing direction. Then stand mentally in the named person’s seat. If the person faces the center, follow the clockwise arrow for “left” and the anticlockwise arrow for “right.” If the person faces outside, swap those directions. Apply this separately for every directional clue in a mixed-facing puzzle.

- Count the seats or people. Note whether all seats are occupied and whether positions are labeled.
- Record orientation. Mark everyone as facing inward, outward, or as otherwise specified. Do not infer a common direction in a mixed puzzle.
- List the clue types. Separate opposite, adjacent, distance, between, exclusion, and directional clues. This makes it easier to choose the strongest starting point.
- Check whether “opposite” is possible. An exact opposite seat exists only when the circle has an even number of seats. The opposite is half a circuit away.
- Choose a temporary anchor. In an unlabeled circle, place one named person at the top or at seat 0. Every rotationally shifted version represents the same order.
Numbering seats clockwise is useful for working calculations. The numbers do not become permanent clues unless the question explicitly labels positions, such as north, south, seat 1, or a numbered table.
What should I place first?
Start with a relationship that removes the most possibilities. A direct opposite clue, an exact distance, or a clearly fixed adjacent pair usually creates a useful skeleton. Add blocks of immediate-neighbor clues next. Leave broad statements such as “E is not next to F” for the elimination stage.
Opposite positions
With an even number of seats, place one person and count half the seats around the circle to locate the other. With six seats, the opposite of seat 0 is seat 3; with eight seats, it is seat 4. On an odd-sized circle, no seat is exactly opposite another, so an apparent opposite clue signals either a different meaning in the question or an invalid interpretation.
Adjacent pairs and blocks
“A sits immediately to the left of B” fixes one neighboring relationship once B’s facing direction is known. If several people must sit consecutively, treat them as a block until another clue determines the block’s orientation. A statement that someone is “between” two people often means adjacent to both, but the two neighbors may be able to swap sides unless the wording specifies which is left or right.

Exact distances
For “second to the right” or “third to the left,” count seats in the indicated direction and include the destination in the ordinal count. Continue around the loop when the count passes the starting seat. If a question writer uses “one person between,” that normally places the target two seats away; follow the wording used in that particular puzzle rather than silently changing its convention.
A dependable solving procedure
1. Draw and orient the circle
Sketch evenly spaced seats and mark the center. Add an inward or outward arrow for each person named in a directional clue. If the diagram becomes crowded, use a numbered seat list beside it. Keep the orientation note visible throughout the solve.
2. Anchor a definite relationship
Place the strongest clue first: an opposite pair when the seat count is even, a fixed distance, or an unmistakable adjacent pair. If the clue leaves two mirror-image possibilities, draw both rather than choosing one from intuition.
3. Translate each directional clue from its viewpoint
For every statement, identify whose left or right is being described. Apply that person’s orientation, then place the target seat. Do not use a single clockwise rule for a group that faces in different directions.
4. Add relative and block clues
Place “between,” consecutive, and distance relationships around the anchored skeleton. When a relation can be read in two orientations, label the alternatives as Case A and Case B. A case is a working hypothesis, not a conclusion.
5. Apply exclusions
Use “not adjacent,” “neither next to,” and similar negative clues to cross out seats. An exclusion should remove only the positions it actually forbids; do not discard an entire case because one placement is impossible if another placement in that case remains valid.
6. Fill remaining seats cautiously
Only assign an unplaced person when the remaining seat is forced or when all other possibilities have been tested. If two people can exchange seats without violating a clue, preserve both arrangements.

7. Verify every clue
Read the original list from the beginning and check each statement against the completed diagram. Confirm orientation, adjacency, counted distance, opposite status, and every negative condition. A diagram that satisfies nine clues but breaks the tenth is not a solution.
8. Answer only what is logically forced
If several arrangements survive, answer a multiple-choice question only when the requested relationship is identical in all surviving cases. Otherwise report that the clues do not establish a unique answer, unless an omitted condition or labeled position resolves the tie.
Worked example: six people facing the center
Suppose six people—A, B, C, D, E, and F—sit around a circle and all face the center. The clues are:
- A sits opposite D.
- B sits immediately to the left of A.
- C sits immediately to the right of D.
- E is not adjacent to A.
This is an illustration of the method, not a universal template.
- Place A at seat 0 as the rotational anchor. Because there are six seats, D goes at seat 3.
- Everyone faces inward, so left is clockwise. B therefore goes at seat 1, immediately clockwise from A.
- Right is anticlockwise for an inward-facing person. C goes one seat anticlockwise from D, at seat 2.
- The unfilled seats are 4 and 5. Seat 5 is adjacent to A, while seat 4 is not. E must therefore occupy seat 4 and F occupies seat 5.
- Read back the clues: A-D are opposite, B is left of A, C is right of D, and E is not adjacent to A. Every condition holds.
The clockwise order from A is A, B, C, D, E, F. Rotating the drawing so that another person appears at the top does not create a new solution.

How to handle common clue types
Immediate left or right
Use one adjacent seat and the named person’s facing direction. “X is immediately left of Y” describes X’s position relative to Y; it does not describe how X views Y.
Second, third, or another counted position
Move one seat at a time in the required direction, wrapping around the circle. Count the destination as the stated ordinal position. Write the path or seat numbers when the wording is easy to misread.

Opposite
Opposite means directly across the center, not merely far away. It requires an even number of seats. If seats are labeled, use the labels; otherwise count half the circumference.
Between
In many aptitude questions, “X sits between Y and Z” means X is adjacent to both. That still may permit Y and Z to exchange sides. If the statement says “Y is to the left of X and Z is to the right,” the orientation is fixed. If the puzzle’s wording is ambiguous, test each plausible interpretation and keep only those consistent with all other clues.

Not adjacent or neither next to
Cross out the immediate neighboring seats that the clue forbids. Do not treat “not next to” as “not anywhere in the same half” or impose a greater distance than stated.
All face outside
Reverse the inward convention: left is anticlockwise and right is clockwise. The physical circle has not changed; only the viewpoint has.
Mixed-facing arrangements
Determine the facing direction of the person used as the reference in each clue. If A faces inward and B faces outward, “C is left of A” and “C is left of B” can point in opposite directions. A person’s own orientation does not change the meaning of a clue that is explicitly relative to someone else.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Managing cases without losing valid solutions
Branching is normal when a clue leaves a choice. Draw separate mini-diagrams or maintain a table of candidate seat numbers. Label each branch with the assumption that created it, such as “Case A: Y clockwise of X” and “Case B: Y anticlockwise of X.”
- Keep a branch while it satisfies every clue checked so far.
- Eliminate it immediately when a clue produces a direct contradiction.
- Do not merge branches merely because they look similar; compare the actual circular order.
- When branches remain at the end, look for a question whose answer is common to all of them.
This approach avoids two opposite errors: guessing a single arrangement too soon and carrying impossible arrangements after a contradiction has already appeared.

Using a seat table for difficult puzzles
A table can make a large puzzle easier to audit. Number seats 0 through n−1 clockwise and record candidates before making final assignments.
| Seat | Current occupant | Allowed candidates | Reason for removal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | A | A | Temporary rotational anchor |
| 1 | not fixed | B, E, F | C and D restricted by other clues |
| 2 | not fixed | C, E, F | Adjacency exclusion |
Update the table after each clue. If a person has only one legal seat, assign that seat; if a seat has only one legal person, assign that person. This is the same constraint logic as the diagram, presented in a form that is easier to review.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reversing left and right
Symptom: Every placement looks mirrored and one or more directional clues fail. Fix: Return to the named person, mark their facing arrow, and reapply the inward or outward rule. Do not correct the whole diagram by eye; recheck each directional clue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Forgetting wraparound
Symptom: A counted position appears to fall off the edge of the drawing. Fix: Treat the seats as a loop and continue from the first seat after the last.
Treating a circle as labeled when it is not
Symptom: You reject a rotated copy as a different answer. Fix: Compare clockwise order and relative positions, not the page location of the drawing. Keep absolute labels only when the question supplies them.
Overinterpreting “between”
Symptom: You discard a valid arrangement because the two neighbors are reversed. Fix: Check whether the clue specifies left and right. If not, retain both neighbor orders until another clue decides.
Using a clue for the wrong viewpoint
Symptom: A mixed-facing puzzle produces contradictory placements. Fix: Identify the person whose left or right is named in each sentence and apply that individual’s direction.
Stopping after a partial fit
Symptom: The proposed answer satisfies the strongest clues but fails a small exclusion. Fix: Perform a final line-by-line verification before selecting an option.
Speed and accuracy techniques for exams
- Write the orientation rule at the top: “Inward: left clockwise, right anticlockwise,” or its outward equivalent.
- Anchor once: Fix one person only to remove rotational duplication; do not keep redrawing the circle with different arbitrary starts.
- Place high-information clues first: Opposite, exact distance, and direct adjacency usually constrain more seats than a negative clue.
- Use symbols: A small arrow for direction, a double line for opposite, and an X for forbidden adjacency reduce rewriting.
- Branch visibly: Separate Case A and Case B instead of carrying an unstated assumption.
- Check the asked relationship last: First ensure each surviving diagram is legal, then compare only the positions relevant to the question.
When the clues are insufficient
A puzzle may legitimately have more than one solution. This happens when a pair can swap sides, when a mirror image is not distinguished by any clue, or when exclusions leave multiple equivalent placements. Do not manufacture uniqueness by assuming a starting seat, imposing an unstated order, or treating a customary interpretation as a guaranteed rule.
State the strongest conclusion supported by the clues: a fixed opposite pair, a set of possible neighbors, or a relationship common to all surviving arrangements. If no requested option is invariant across the cases, the correct logical response is that the information is insufficient.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- Have you counted the seats correctly?
- Is an opposite clue being used only with an even number of seats?
- Did you mark each relevant person as inward- or outward-facing?
- Was every left/right clue translated from the named person’s viewpoint?
- Did every counted distance wrap around the circle?
- Did you treat “between” according to the wording rather than an assumption?
- Did you preserve unresolved cases until a clue eliminated them?
- Does the final diagram satisfy positive and negative clues alike?
- Are you reporting only a relationship that all surviving arrangements share?
