In Photoshop desktop, feather a selection either by entering a pixel value in the selected Lasso or Marquee tool’s Options bar before drawing, or by choosing Select > Modify > Feather after making the selection. Feathering creates a gradual transition at the edge; the right radius depends on the image and the size of the selection.
Feather an edge while making a selection

Select a Lasso or Marquee tool. Marquee tools make geometric selections; Lasso tools are suited to flexible, hand-drawn selections or tracing an edge. See Adobe’s Marquee tool instructions and Lasso tool instructions.

In the Options bar, enter a Feather value in pixels. A value of 0 leaves the selection edge hard.

Draw the selection. The feather setting applies as you create it.

Feather a selection that already exists

Make and activate the selection.

Choose Select > Modify > Feather.

Enter the Feather Radius in pixels, then choose OK.

The radius controls the width of the transition zone. Adobe does not specify a universal best value: the useful setting depends on the image scale, selection size and intended blend. Start with a restrained radius, apply an edit, and adjust if the edge looks too soft or too abrupt. Adobe’s selection-edge instructions cover the dialog and its warning.
How to see whether the feather worked
The marching-ants outline is not a dependable preview of the full softness. Adobe notes that the effect becomes visible when you move, cut, copy or fill the selection. Test it with a reversible edit, such as filling on a separate layer or applying the selection to a mask, and inspect the transition against the surrounding image. Feather or anti-alias?
Choose based on the edge problem you are solving:

Feather when you want a gradual fade between selected and unselected areas. It blurs the boundary and can soften a cutout or blend an edited area, but may also reduce fine detail along the edge.

Anti-aliasing when the edge looks jagged or stair-stepped and you want smoother edge pixels, not a broad fade. For supported tools, enable anti-aliasing in the Options bar before making the selection.

These settings address different issues; anti-aliasing does not create the same gradual transition as feathering. Adobe explains the distinction in its guide to refining selection edges.
When a simple feather is not enough
A single Feather Radius softens the selection boundary broadly, which can sacrifice detail on intricate edges. For hair or other complex boundaries, use Select and Mask and its refinement controls instead of trying to preserve detail with a large global feather. Adobe describes that workflow in Refine hair selections in Photoshop.

Fix the “No pixels are more than 50% selected” warning
This warning means the feather radius is too large for the selection to retain a clearly defined area above the 50% selection threshold. Reduce the radius or make a larger selection, then try again. Adobe says you can continue with the current mask even if the edges are not visible, but the resulting selection may be extremely faint.
Adjusting a selection without losing its feather setting
If you adjust an existing selection, Photoshop can preserve its Feather and anti-alias settings. Adobe’s selection adjustment instructions, updated February 23, 2026, explain how those settings carry through adjustment workflows.
Photoshop on iPad
Adobe’s reference PDF updated in 2019 documents a Feather setting for selections on iPad, but that older document does not establish that the current iPad interface uses the same labels or steps as Photoshop desktop. Check current iPad-specific help for the matching controls rather than assuming the desktop menu path applies.
