Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
A Project Zomboid soft reset is intended to refresh server and player identity state while retaining the existing world data. It is not the same as deleting the server’s Saves folder. In the server profile, ResetID records that a soft reset occurred, while ServerPlayerID can change; when the client and server values no longer match, players must create new characters. The safest method is to stop the server cleanly, back up the complete Zomboid data set, apply the reset control exposed by your exact build or hosting panel, restart, and verify the result with one test player.
What a soft reset changes
A soft reset targets identity and server-state metadata rather than generating a completely new map. Existing world files are intended to remain available, but character continuity is not guaranteed. The example servertest.ini profile documents both ResetID and ServerPlayerID. If the reset causes those values to differ from what a client expects, that client is prompted to create a new character.
Think of the operation as a controlled reset of who the server believes its players are, not as a way to repair every world problem. It can be useful when you want a fresh character start while keeping the established map, buildings and other world progress. Because implementations differ between a Steam-installed server, a container and a provider panel, the exact switch must come from the interface or documentation for the installation you actually run.
Soft reset versus deleting the map
| Operation | World data | Player state | Reversibility and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft reset | Intended to preserve the existing world data; confirm behavior on the exact game build. | Reset identity values can require existing clients to make new characters. | Moderate risk. A complete backup allows recovery if the result is not what you expected. |
| Full wipe | The server’s Saves folder is deleted and a new map is generated on the next launch. |
New player state is expected. | Destructive unless the deleted files are restored from a verified backup. |
Do not call deletion of Zomboid/Saves a soft reset. In a 22 March 2021 Steam-community reply, Project Zomboid officer Beard described a full reset as manually deleting the server’s Saves folder and changing ServerID and PlayerID in servertest.ini so players receive new characters. That is a description of a map wipe, not a recommendation for a soft reset and not a guarantee that current Build 42 tools use the same names.

Before you reset: preparation checklist
Announce downtime
Tell players when the server will stop and that characters may not carry over. A soft reset can invalidate client/server identity state, so players should not leave the game running while maintenance begins.
Stop the server cleanly
Use the server’s normal shutdown command or the Stop control in the host panel and wait until the process has exited. The Project Zomboid dedicated-server guidance specifically advises a clean exit before copying or editing files. Never copy, rename or edit a live world while the server is writing saves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBack up the entire data set
Copy the complete Zomboid user folder, including the multiplayer save directory and the active server profile. At minimum, preserve an untouched copy of servertest.ini before making changes. Keep the backup outside the live directory and label it with the date, build and profile name. A backup is only useful if you can identify which server it belongs to and restore it without overwriting the original copy.
Record the installation details
Write down the exact game build, server profile name and hosting environment. A panel may expose a one-click reset that a Steam installation does not, while a container can translate an environment variable into a startup option. These differences are why a command copied from another distribution may do nothing or trigger the wrong operation.
Where the server profile and saves normally live
On Windows, the dedicated-server guide places the server profile under C:Users<you>ZomboidServer. The active profile may not be named servertest; use the profile selected by your launch command or panel. The associated multiplayer saves are under the Zomboid user data tree. If you edit a similarly named profile that the server does not load, the restart will appear to have ignored your changes.
Open the active .ini only after the server is stopped. The example profile includes DefaultPort=16261, a documented ResetID entry and a separate ServerPlayerID entry. Those are identity-related settings; do not replace them with values copied from a different server. Preserve the original file so you can compare exactly what changed.

Safe soft-reset procedure
- Schedule maintenance. Notify players, record the profile and build, and wait until nobody is connected.
- Shut down completely. Stop the dedicated server through its supported control and confirm that the process has exited and no save operation is still running.
- Create a dated backup. Copy the full
Zomboidfolder, the multiplayer save directory and the active profile, includingservertest.iniif that is the profile in use. Do not modify this backup. - Open the control for your environment. Use the reset option documented by the exact server build, container image or provider panel. Do not assume that a Java argument or an option from an older tutorial applies to your installation.
- Enable only the soft-reset control. Check that the setting is a soft reset rather than a wipe, fresh-world, regenerate-map or delete-saves action. Leave map files and the
Savesdirectory in place. - Save configuration and start the server. Let startup finish normally. Do not connect while the server is still loading or while the panel reports that files are being regenerated.
- Test with one administrator or test account. Connect after the server reaches its ready state. Confirm whether the expected character-creation prompt appears and whether the established world is still present.
- Record the outcome. Note the build, profile, control used and resulting identity behavior. This makes a later recovery or second reset less ambiguous.
Using a Docker-based server
One Docker configuration reference exposes a startup variable named SOFTRESET. In that wrapper, 0 means false and 1 means true, and the default is 0. The same reference identifies Steam dedicated-server app ID 380870. These are details of that particular image, not a universal Project Zomboid setting.
If you use a container, stop it before copying its mounted data, verify which host directory is mapped to the container’s Zomboid folder, and inspect the container’s documented variables. Set SOFTRESET=1 only when the image you installed explicitly supports that variable. After the one-time reset, return the variable to 0 if the image documentation treats it as a launch trigger; otherwise, the container may attempt the operation again on every restart. Because wrapper behavior can change between image versions, follow the image’s versioned instructions and keep the pre-reset backup.
Using a provider control panel
Managed panels may offer buttons such as Soft Reset, Reset Characters or Wipe World. Read the confirmation text carefully: only choose the control that states the map or world is retained. Some panels use “reset” for a destructive reinstall. Check that the selected profile is the one currently started by the service, and download the panel’s backup before confirming.
Ask the provider which Project Zomboid build and branch the service runs, where backups are stored, how long they are retained, and whether the reset is reversible. A panel that supports an experimental Build 42 branch can expose different controls from one running another branch. If the panel does not explain its reset behavior, stop and obtain that explanation rather than guessing from a similarly named option.

Check the world
Load a known location with the test account. Buildings, roads and other established world features should still correspond to the pre-reset world if the operation was intended to preserve map data. If the server presents a newly generated map, stop immediately and restore the backup instead of allowing players to continue on the wrong world.
Check character identity
Have one test player connect first. A new-character requirement indicates that the identity state changed as expected. Players who remain connected through maintenance may need to disconnect and reconnect before the client notices the new server identity.

Check the active profile
If everything looks unchanged, compare the profile name in the startup configuration with the file you backed up and edited. Confirm that the save directory belongs to that profile. A server can load a different profile than the one you assumed, making a correctly edited file appear ineffective.
Check the build and mods
Verify that client and server build strings match before diagnosing the reset. Keep Mods and WorkshopItems aligned; the example profile treats them as separate settings, so changing one does not automatically update the other. A mismatch can prevent joining and can be mistaken for a reset failure.

Troubleshooting common failures
The old characters and world are still present
- Confirm that the server actually restarted after the control was enabled.
- Check the active profile name and its corresponding save directory.
- Inspect the panel or container logs for a soft-reset action rather than a normal startup.
- Verify that the reset switch was enabled for the correct instance and then disabled or returned to its documented default if it is a one-time trigger.
Players cannot join
- Wait for a clean, ready startup before testing.
- Confirm that client and server build strings are identical.
- Check that the server still uses the intended networking configuration. The dedicated-server guide lists UDP 16261 and 16262 as default networking ports, with 8766 used depending on the Steam networking path; these are connection settings, not soft-reset commands.
- Ensure the client has the same required mods and workshop items as the server.
The server shows a fresh map
Stop the server before anyone builds or saves additional progress. A fresh map means a destructive operation may have been selected, the wrong profile was started, or the save path changed. Restore the dated backup to the original location, verify the profile and startup settings, and then investigate the hosting tool’s reset documentation before trying again.
The reset option is missing
Do not substitute an unverified command such as a generic -Dsoftreset argument. No single syntax is established as safe for every current Project Zomboid distribution. Use the build-specific documentation, panel support or container reference for the installation you run.
When a full wipe is actually appropriate
Choose a full wipe only when the group has agreed to abandon the existing map or when a separately verified recovery plan requires regeneration. Stop the server, preserve the backup, and follow the exact procedure for the current build and host. The historical procedure described by Beard on 22 March 2021—deleting the server’s Saves folder and changing ServerID and PlayerID in servertest.ini—illustrates the destructive pattern, but it should not be treated as current universal instructions.
Before deleting anything, confirm that you can restore the old save directory and profile, tell every player that the world will be new, and check whether your host offers a safer “new instance” operation. Keeping the old backup untouched lets you reverse the decision if the group changes its mind.
Practical decision guide
- Keep the map, start characters over: use the documented soft-reset control for your exact environment, then test with one account.
- Start an entirely new world: use a verified full-wipe procedure; never accomplish this by casually deleting files on a live server.
- Unsure which profile is active: stop, inspect the launch configuration and panel-selected profile, and make a backup before editing.
- Unsure whether a panel’s reset preserves the map: do not confirm the action until its description or provider documentation explicitly says what happens to world data.
Understanding the identity fields
ResetID and ServerPlayerID are easy to confuse because both appear in the same profile. They do not represent the map itself. The profile documentation describes ResetID as indicating that the server has undergone a soft reset, while ServerPlayerID is a value that may change during one. The client compares identity information when it connects; a mismatch is why a returning player can be asked to create a character even though the town, roads and buildings remain.
Do not manually invent new values just to force this behavior. A value copied from another server can create a different identity problem, and editing the wrong profile has no effect. Let the supported reset control perform the change, then keep the pre-reset file so you can see what the installation changed.
What to include in a restorable backup
A single screenshot of the panel is not a backup. Preserve the complete Zomboid user folder, the multiplayer save directory, the active server profile and the exact .ini file used at launch. Include the profile name, build string and date in the backup folder name. For a container, also record the host path mounted into the container; otherwise you may back up an empty local directory while the live files remain elsewhere.
Keep the untouched copy separate from any working copy. If verification shows a new map or an unintended identity result, stop the server, move the incorrect live data out of the way and restore the saved profile and multiplayer files to their original paths. Do not restore over the only backup. Start once with the restored files and test before announcing that the old world is back.
A low-risk maintenance runbook
- Post the maintenance notice and ask players to log out normally.
- Write down the profile name, game build, branch, host type and the reset control you intend to use.
- Stop the service and wait for a clean process exit.
- Copy the files and verify that the backup contains the expected profile and save directory.
- Apply one soft-reset setting only; do not combine it with a fresh-world, reinstall or delete-saves action.
- Start the service and wait for the ready state shown by the console or panel.
- Connect with one test account, check a familiar location and observe whether character creation is requested.
- Only after those checks pass, invite the rest of the players back.
This staged approach limits the blast radius. If the first connection reveals a wrong map, you can shut down before additional characters save progress to the wrong world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limits of a soft reset
A soft reset is not a general-purpose repair command. It does not guarantee that damaged map chunks, incompatible mods or a mismatched client build will be corrected. Keep the server’s Mods and WorkshopItems settings consistent, and treat connection failures separately from identity changes. The default networking values—UDP 16261 and 16262, with 8766 depending on the Steam networking path—help diagnose reachability, but changing a port does not perform a reset.

Likewise, a reset cannot compensate for an unknown active profile. If the service launches servertest while you edited another profile, the server can appear unchanged. Confirm the launch argument or panel selection first, then match that profile to its save directory and backup.

Hosting and operational considerations
A self-hosted Steam installation, a Docker image and a managed host may expose different controls for the same game. The Steam dedicated-server app ID listed by one Docker reference is 380870, and that image exposes SOFTRESET; neither detail proves that another image or host accepts the same setting. Ask a managed provider whether the service runs Build 42 or another branch, how backups are retained, and whether a soft reset can be reversed. If the panel’s wording is ambiguous, request clarification before confirming.
For a managed service, download or create the provider backup in addition to keeping your own copy. Check which instance and profile the panel has selected, especially when one account runs several servers. A reset button can be safe for one instance and irrelevant to another if the wrong service is selected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a soft reset delete the Project Zomboid map?
It is intended to preserve existing world data. Verify the exact build or host control, and stop immediately if the restarted server presents a newly generated map. Deleting Zomboid/Saves is a full wipe, not a soft reset.
Will players keep their characters?
Not necessarily. When the reset changes identity values such as ResetID or ServerPlayerID, existing clients may be required to create new characters.
What should I back up first?
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the complete Zomboid user folder, the multiplayer save directory and the active server profile. Keep an untouched copy of servertest.ini outside the live directory.
Where is the server profile on Windows?
The dedicated-server guide places it under C:Users<you>ZomboidServer. The active profile may have another name, so confirm the profile selected by the launch command or panel.
Can I use -Dsoftreset on any server?
Do not assume so. A universal command is not established for every current distribution. Use the documented control for your exact build, container image or provider panel.
How do I soft reset a Docker server?
Only if your image documents it. One reference exposes SOFTRESET=1 to enable the operation and 0 as the default, but that variable is wrapper-specific. Stop the container, back up the mounted data and follow the image version’s instructions.

Confirm that the correct instance and profile restarted, inspect logs for a reset action, check the matching save directory, and verify that a one-time trigger was enabled as documented. Editing an unused profile will have no effect.
What if players cannot connect afterward?
Wait for a complete startup, match client and server build strings, verify the required mods and workshop items, and check networking. UDP 16261 and 16262 are listed as defaults, with 8766 depending on the Steam networking path; these ports are not reset commands.
When should I perform a full wipe instead?
Only when the group accepts a new map or a verified recovery process requires regeneration. Preserve the backup, stop the server and follow current host-specific instructions; do not casually delete files while the server is live.
The Bottom Line
A safe soft reset preserves your options: stop the server cleanly, back up the complete Zomboid data set, use only the reset control documented for your build and host, and test the world and one character before reopening the server. Deleting Saves creates a new map and belongs to a separately planned full wipe.
