To smooth variable layer-height transitions, open your slicer’s variable-layer-height tool, generate or edit the height profile, apply its Smooth control, and verify the result in the profile and model previews. The smoothing radius controls how wide an area is blended: a larger radius produces a broader, gentler curve, while repeated smoothing passes make the profile progressively less abrupt. Keep minimum heights where fine detail requires them, then choose the final profile by balancing surface detail against print time.

What smoothing changes

Variable layer height lets a slicer use short layers around fine or curved geometry and taller layers on simpler sections. The result is a profile that changes layer thickness as the print rises. If neighboring values change sharply, the transition can be difficult to tune and may produce an uneven distribution of detail or unnecessary thin layers.

Smoothing operates on that layer-height profile, not on the model’s mesh and not on the printer’s motion settings. Prusa Research describes its Smooth command as smoothing “the layer variable layer height profile.” OrcaSlicer describes its radius as the width of a Gaussian filter, which is a way of expressing how broadly each point is influenced by surrounding points.

A larger radius blends a wider portion of the profile and therefore creates a gentler transition. A smaller radius affects a narrower region and preserves more of the original local changes. In PrusaSlicer, pressing Smooth again applies another pass, making the curve progressively smoother. No universal radius is established for every model, so the correct setting depends on the geometry and the detail you need to retain.

Before you start

Use a slicer that exposes variable layer height

The exact tool name and location vary by release. The documented workflows here apply to PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer and Slic3r. PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer explicitly expose a smoothing control; Slic3r documents adaptive generation and interactive refinement. If your installed build uses different labels, look for a model-level variable-layer-height or adaptive-layer-height editor rather than a global layer-height field.

Choose a normal print profile first

Variable heights are applied on top of the selected print, filament and printer settings. Set the nozzle, material, layer-height limits and other ordinary profile options before editing the variable profile. Smoothing cannot correct an unsuitable base profile or compensate for mechanical, extrusion or material problems.

Decide what detail must be protected

Identify narrow ledges, embossed text, domes, curved walls and other regions where a short layer is useful. These are the areas most likely to lose definition if smoothing raises their heights. Conversely, broad, gently changing surfaces usually tolerate a wider smoothing radius.

PrusaSlicer: step-by-step smoothing workflow

  1. Select the model. In the Plater view, click the object whose layer-height profile you want to edit.
  2. Open the variable-layer-height tool. PrusaSlicer displays the model’s contour lines and a profile panel for the variable heights. The control can be used after selecting an object; it is not a global setting for every model on the plate.
  3. Generate an adaptive profile or edit it manually. Use the tool’s Quality/Speed control to create an initial adaptive profile, or adjust the profile directly. Adaptive generation gives you a starting curve; manual edits let you preserve a specific short-layer region or raise heights where detail is not important.
  4. Apply Smooth. Use the Smooth command to blend abrupt changes in the profile. Increase the smoothing radius when you want the effect to cover a broader region. If the transition is still too sharp, press Smooth again for another pass.
  5. Protect the smallest heights when required. Enable Keep min when you want smoothing to retain the minimum layer heights already present while the rest of the curve is smoothed. Check the resulting profile rather than assuming every short layer was preserved automatically.
  6. Inspect the graph and model preview. Look for a continuous curve without unexpected spikes, and check the actual layers around fine features. The preview confirms what the slicer will generate; it does not guarantee a particular printed surface finish.
  7. Slice and review the layer plan. Confirm that the final profile still places short layers where the geometry needs them and taller layers where extra resolution would only add time.

OrcaSlicer: understanding the Smooth radius

OrcaSlicer presents smoothing as a radius setting associated with a Gaussian filter. The radius describes the width of the neighborhood used to blend the profile. A small radius makes a local adjustment; a large radius spreads the change over more of the model’s height range.

When to increase the radius

  • Use a larger radius when the profile contains several abrupt steps that should become one gradual transition.
  • Increase it when adjacent short and tall regions are close together and the curve looks noisy in the preview.
  • Expect more of the surrounding profile to change as the radius grows, including sections you may have edited manually.

When to keep the radius small

  • Use a smaller radius when a short-layer region protects a distinct feature and must remain localized.
  • Keep the radius conservative when the model has closely spaced details at different heights.
  • Reduce it if smoothing raises layers that were intentionally kept thin or removes a useful local change.

OrcaSlicer’s description establishes the direction of the effect—larger radius means broader smoothing—but does not specify one setting that is optimal for all models. Tune it from the profile and preview, not from a fixed number copied between projects.

Adaptive generation and manual editing work together

Adaptive generation is useful for producing an initial profile from the model’s geometry. Manual editing is useful for correcting that starting point. A practical sequence is to generate adaptively, inspect the curve, adjust important regions by hand, and then smooth only if the transitions remain abrupt.

Smoothing should be treated as a profile-editing operation, not as a replacement for reviewing the adaptive result. An adaptive profile may already place short layers where they matter. A broad smoothing pass can alter those values, so check the minimum-height areas again afterward. If the slicer provides a minimum-preservation option such as PrusaSlicer’s Keep min, use it when retaining those minima is part of the print plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose a smoothing radius without a universal number

Because the documented sources do not provide a tested setting that applies to every model, choose the radius by observing the profile’s shape and the geometry it represents.

  1. Start with the generated or hand-edited curve. Note where the profile changes sharply and where short layers are intentional.
  2. Apply the smallest practical smoothing effect. Use a small radius or one smoothing pass first. This limits unintended changes.
  3. Compare the curve before and after. Confirm that the abrupt step has become a gradual ramp and that detail-critical minima remain where you expect them.
  4. Broaden only when necessary. Increase the radius or apply another pass if the transition still contains visible spikes or abrupt steps.
  5. Stop when the profile is stable. Additional smoothing can continue to move values away from your manual edits. Stop once the curve is sufficiently gradual for the model’s geometry.

This process gives you a model-specific setting while keeping the trade-off visible: more gradual transitions may use taller layers in places that previously had short layers, while preserving every short layer can increase print time.

Preview checks that catch unwanted changes

Check the profile curve

The curve should change gradually through the region you intended to smooth. Look for isolated peaks, sudden valleys or a long section that has been changed even though only a local feature needed adjustment.

Check fine geometry in the layer preview

Move through the layers around text, ridges, overhangs, domes and other small features. Confirm that the slicer still creates enough vertical resolution to represent them. A smooth mathematical curve is not evidence that the printed surface will be free of artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the time and layer count

Shorter layers preserve detail but add layers and therefore generally increase print time. Taller layers reduce the number of layers but make layer lines more visible and can reduce the representation of curved or finely stepped geometry. Compare the estimated time after smoothing rather than assuming that a visually smoother profile is faster.

Check minimum values

If you used a minimum-preservation option, verify that the smallest values remain in the intended locations. If they moved or disappeared, undo the smoothing pass, reduce its radius, or restore the critical points manually before smoothing again.

Common problems and fixes

The curve is still stepped

Apply another smoothing pass in PrusaSlicer or increase the radius in a slicer that exposes the radius directly. Inspect after each change; repeated or broad smoothing can affect more of the model than the original problem area.

Important detail became too coarse

The smoothing effect was probably too broad or too many passes were applied. Undo the last change, reduce the radius, or manually restore short layers around the feature. In PrusaSlicer, enable Keep min when the minimum values must be retained during smoothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Too many tiny layers remain

Inspect whether the adaptive profile created short layers in a region that does not need them. Raise those values manually, then smooth the transition into neighboring sections. Do not remove short layers from a feature merely to reduce time; verify the geometry in the preview first.

The slicer interface does not match these steps

Control names and placement can change across releases, operating systems and forks. Prusa Research notes that screenshots in its documentation may come from older versions while the functionality remains the same. Look for the variable-layer-height editor, its profile graph and a command labeled Smooth or an equivalent radius control in your installed version.

The preview looks smooth but the print still shows a surface artifact

Profile smoothing only changes the planned layer-height sequence. It does not prove a particular surface finish and does not address every source of visible artifacts. Review the layer preview and treat the printed result as a separate validation of the complete print setup.

Quality-versus-time decisions

Favor shorter layers when geometry demands it

Keep fine layers around small vertical features, tight curves, shallow slopes and details whose appearance depends on vertical resolution. If smoothing raises those layers, restore the local minimum or narrow the smoothing effect.

Favor taller layers on forgiving surfaces

Broad, simple surfaces can often use taller layers without the same loss of detail. Smoothing can make the change into those sections gradual instead of leaving isolated steps in the profile.

Evaluate the complete profile, not one value

A single minimum or maximum layer height does not describe the print’s behavior. Review where the values occur, how quickly they change, the resulting layer count and the model preview. The useful outcome is a profile that allocates resolution to geometry that needs it.

A repeatable checklist

  • Select the model and open variable layer height.
  • Generate an adaptive profile or edit one manually.
  • Mark the regions where minimum heights protect detail.
  • Apply Smooth with a conservative radius or one pass.
  • Use Keep min where the slicer provides it and those minima are intentional.
  • Inspect the profile curve for spikes, valleys and unintended broad changes.
  • Inspect the layer preview around critical geometry.
  • Review estimated time and layer count.
  • Adjust, undo or narrow the smoothing effect if detail was lost.
  • Slice only after the final profile matches the model’s detail and time priorities.

Bottom line

Smoothing variable layer height is a controlled profile-editing step: generate or refine the adaptive curve, apply Smooth, adjust the radius or repeat the pass, and verify the resulting layers. Use a broader radius for broad, gradual transitions and a smaller effect when local detail must remain protected. Since no universal setting is established, the profile graph, minimum-height checks and model preview are the reliable basis for choosing the final result.
