Size an AI inference server for a specific model, precision, context window, serving backend and concurrency target—not for parameter count alone. Start by estimating model-weight memory, then reserve GPU space for the KV cache, activations, communication buffers, CUDA graphs, adapters, multimodal state and runtime overhead. Size local storage from the checkpoint files and variants you will retain. Treat CPU RAM as a deployment-specific requirement: the available documentation does not support a universal “RAM per parameter” rule.
A model can load successfully and still fail when you request the intended context length or simultaneous sessions. The practical question is therefore not merely “Can the weights fit?” but “Does the GPU pool leave enough usable memory for the workload?”
What you must specify before buying hardware

- Exact checkpoint, model family and parameter count.
- Weight precision or quantization used by the checkpoint or serving profile.
- Target context length, including prompt and generated tokens.
- Maximum concurrent sequences (simultaneous requests), not just average traffic.
- Serving backend and version, because allocation and profile behavior differ.
- LoRA adapters, multimodal inputs or other optional model features.
- Whether one model copy is sharded across GPUs and the server’s interconnect topology.
- Which model variants, shards and containers must remain on local storage.
Parameter count is the starting input, not a complete specification. Cache capacity and runtime allocations depend on the actual model and backend.

Estimate GPU memory for model weights
NVIDIA’s NIM guidance uses this first-pass calculation:
weight memory per GPU ≈ total parameters × bytes per parameter ÷ tensor parallel size
The byte estimates in that guide are:
| Format | Planning value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| BF16 | 2 bytes per parameter | Weight estimate before cache and runtime allocations |
| FP16 | 2 bytes per parameter | Weight estimate before cache and runtime allocations |
| FP8 | 1 byte per parameter | Lower weight footprint; verify hardware and profile support |
| INT4 | 0.5 byte per parameter | Quantized estimate; packing and runtime behavior still matter |
| NVFP4 | 0.5 byte per parameter | Quantized estimate; confirm native support on the selected GPU |
These values are heuristics for weights, not a promise about total VRAM consumption. Quantization can reduce the weight footprint, but performance may suffer when a GPU lacks native support for the selected precision. Confirm the model profile and the hardware’s supported formats.
For the underlying formula and qualifications, see the NVIDIA NIM memory guide.
Published planning examples
| Model and format | Published weight estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Llama 3.1 8B, BF16, tensor parallelism 1 | 16 GB | NVIDIA says this fits on a single 24 GB GPU with room remaining for KV cache and overhead; it is an example, not a universal minimum. |
| Llama 3.3 70B, BF16, four GPUs | 35 GB per GPU | The remaining VRAM depends on each GPU’s capacity and must cover cache and overhead. |
| Llama 3.3 70B, FP8, two GPUs | 35 GB per GPU | This demonstrates reduced weight memory, not complete deployment capacity. |
| 70B model, FP8 | About 70 GB total | NVIDIA Dynamo’s estimate is for weights before cache and other allocations. |
| 70B model, BF16 | About 140 GB total | Again, this is a weight estimate before serving overhead. |
The figures come from current NVIDIA documentation: the NIM troubleshooting guide and the Dynamo deployment guide. They are documentation examples, not independent benchmarks or guaranteed minimum GPU sizes.

Add KV cache, activations and framework overhead
After weights are loaded, the server still needs memory for each active request and for the execution engine. NVIDIA lists KV cache, peak activations, communication buffers, CUDA graphs, LoRA adapters, multimodal reservations and hybrid-model state as possible consumers. Allocation order and accounting vary by backend version and model.
Dynamo gives this planning relation:
weights + KV cache + overhead ≤ (TP × PP) × VRAM per GPU
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its guidance suggests allowing approximately 10–15% overhead as an initial planning heuristic and retaining a healthy remainder for KV cache. Do not treat that percentage as backend-independent: measure the effective profile and startup behavior of the stack you will deploy.
The NIM setting gpu_memory_utilization controls the budget from which KV cache is sized after measured allocations, while additional headroom may be required for allocations not included in profiling. Defaults and overrides can differ between images, profiles and user settings. Inspect the effective configuration instead of copying a default blindly.
Why context length changes the answer
Longer prompts and generations require more KV-cache capacity. So does concurrency: ten simultaneous sequences consume substantially more cache than one sequence with the same maximum context. A model’s advertised maximum context is therefore not automatically a sensible production target for your GPU pool.

Plan a cache target from the largest simultaneous token demand you actually need. If your service accepts 32 concurrent requests at 8,000 tokens each, size for that combination rather than multiplying the model’s theoretical maximum by an arbitrary safety factor. The backend’s profiling tools and startup logs are the authority for the resulting token capacity.

Parallelism solves different capacity problems:
| Method | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Tensor parallelism (TP) | Splits layers or tensor operations of one model copy across GPUs. | One GPU cannot hold the model, or you need high-bandwidth intra-node sharing. |
| Pipeline parallelism (PP) | Places groups of layers on different GPUs or nodes. | The model needs more devices than a practical TP group can provide. |
| Data parallelism (DP) | Replicates the model and sends requests to separate copies. | One copy already fits and you need more throughput or availability. |
Data parallelism does not make a single model copy fit; every replica consumes its own weight memory. For a model that requires sharding, establish a TP or PP pool first, then add replicas if throughput justifies the extra hardware.
NVIDIA recommends filling tensor parallelism within a node before moving to pipeline parallelism or multiple nodes where appropriate. That advice assumes suitable high-speed interconnects and backend support. Check the actual topology, GPU count per node, cross-node network and supported parallelism modes before committing to a server design. Dynamo’s deployment guidance explains the relationship between pooled GPU memory, TP and PP: NVIDIA Dynamo deployment documentation.
A repeatable sizing workflow
- Freeze the model specification. Identify the exact checkpoint, parameter count, precision, context target, adapters, multimodal features and backend profile.
- Calculate weight memory. Multiply parameters by the format’s planning bytes and divide by TP. Use the actual checkpoint format where it differs from a nominal model format.
- Select a candidate GPU pool. Compare usable VRAM—not just advertised capacity—with the distributed weight estimate. Leave room on every GPU, not only in the pool total.
- Reserve runtime memory. Start with the backend’s documented overhead guidance, then account for activations, communication, graphs, adapters and multimodal state.
- Set a cache target. Translate context and concurrency into a token demand. Confirm that the selected profile can allocate that KV cache after weights and measured allocations.
- Choose TP, PP or DP. Use TP or PP to make one copy fit; use DP for additional copies and throughput after fit is established.
- Validate by starting the real profile. Capture startup logs, effective settings, allocated KV tokens and free memory. Test the maximum context and concurrency you intend to advertise.
- Inventory storage and host RAM separately. Count every retained checkpoint, shard and precision variant, then determine CPU-memory needs from loading and offload behavior.
How much storage does an inference server need?
Local disk capacity follows the files you intend to keep, not a universal parameter-count multiplier. A deployment may retain multiple precision variants, tokenizer files, configuration, sharded checkpoints, adapters, container layers and operating-system space.
Build a checkpoint inventory
- List every model and precision variant that may be loaded.
- Record the size of every shard and associated metadata file.
- Include LoRA or other adapter files used in production.
- Reserve operational space for image layers, logs, temporary downloads and updates.
- Verify the server’s supported drive interface, form factor and redundancy design.
Inference software can load a model from a local path, and inspecting checkpoint files is the most reliable way to establish disk usage. The cited deployment material does not establish a universal storage multiplier, SSD capacity, endurance rating or throughput requirement. Select capacity from your inventory and leave operational headroom rather than applying a guessed “model size times two” rule.

An NVMe SSD is a plausible category for local checkpoint storage, but the appropriate capacity, endurance and performance depend on the server and file set. Compare interface compatibility, sustained read behavior, endurance and replacement strategy—not a brand or an unverified benchmark.
How much system RAM is required?
There is no supported universal RAM-per-parameter formula in the cited material. Ordinary host RAM does not substitute for GPU VRAM needed by model weights. CPU memory requirements depend on the software stack and whether you use loading, staging or documented offload features.
Triton’s TensorRT-LLM backend exposes optional host-memory controls, including kv_cache_host_memory_bytes for KV-cache offload and host-memory settings for LoRA cache. Those settings matter only when your deployment enables and supports them; they are not a general minimum-RAM recommendation. See the Triton model configuration documentation.
Determine host RAM from the selected loader, number of workers, staging behavior, offload configuration and measured peak usage. Monitor system memory during cold starts, model reloads and peak concurrency; do not assume that a large RAM upgrade will cure a GPU allocation failure.
Backend controls that affect KV-cache capacity
For TensorRT-LLM on the cited Triton release, several settings directly constrain cache capacity:

| Setting | Effect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
max_tokens_in_paged_kv_cache |
Caps the number of tokens held in the paged KV cache. | A token cap is not interchangeable with a VRAM fraction. |
kv_cache_free_gpu_mem_fraction |
Limits the fraction of post-load GPU memory available to KV cache. | The post-load free-memory baseline depends on the rest of the profile. |
kv_cache_host_memory_bytes |
Enables a host-memory area for KV-cache offload. | Requires compatible host RAM and a supported configuration; it does not remove all GPU-cache requirements. |
Use the controls documented for your exact backend release. A setting that reduces the cache budget can prevent allocation by lowering capacity, but it also lowers usable context or concurrency. Conversely, increasing a fraction cannot create VRAM occupied by weights, another process or fragmentation.
Diagnose failures by when they occur
| Symptom or phase | Checks | Likely corrective actions |
|---|---|---|
| Failure while loading weights | Weight estimate, precision, available VRAM, TP/PP profile and other GPU processes. | Use a supported quantization, increase the GPU pool, change TP/PP, or choose a smaller model. Confirm the profile before changing unrelated settings. |
| Failure during KV-cache allocation | Context length, concurrency, cache settings, remaining VRAM and fragmentation clues. | Lower the requested context or concurrency, correct the profile, stop competing processes and validate cache controls. |
| Warm-up crash or illegal-memory-access error | Backend logs, known profile issues and whether an actual allocation failure is reported. | Do not label every CUDA error “out of memory.” Check supported profiles and backend issues first. |
| Unexpectedly small cache | Effective gpu_memory_utilization, measured allocations, image defaults and user overrides. |
Inspect the effective configuration and startup logs; defaults can differ by image and profile. |
NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance separates weight-loading failures from cache-allocation failures and cautions that illegal-memory-access errors or warm-up crashes do not by themselves prove memory exhaustion: NVIDIA NIM memory troubleshooting.
Fragmentation versus insufficient capacity
If total free memory appears adequate but an allocation fails, inspect allocator and startup logs for fragmentation or prior allocations. A clean process restart can distinguish stale allocations from a genuinely undersized pool, but it is not a substitute for sizing the intended workload. Measure after the model profile has loaded, not only before launch.

When comparing GPUs, evaluate usable VRAM, support for the required precision, native quantization support, number of GPUs needed for the model, intra-node and cross-node interconnects, and measured cost/performance on your workload. A card with more nominal VRAM may be a poor choice if its precision support or interconnect prevents the target profile from running efficiently.
For storage, compare the checkpoint inventory against supported interface and form factor, usable capacity, endurance, sustained loading behavior and replacement plan. For host memory, compare options only when the deployment documents host-memory cache or offload and you have measured the resulting requirement. The cited sources do not provide vendor-neutral benchmarks, current prices or universal hardware SKU recommendations; those claims require workload-specific verification.
A practical acceptance test before production
- Start with an otherwise idle server and record baseline GPU and system memory.
- Launch the exact model, precision and parallelism profile planned for production.
- Capture weight allocation, framework overhead, KV-cache capacity and effective configuration from logs.
- Run the maximum supported context you intend to offer.
- Ramp concurrent sequences to the advertised limit while monitoring latency, errors and memory headroom.
- Repeat with adapters or multimodal inputs enabled if production requests can use them.
- Test a restart and a model reload to expose temporary storage, staging or fragmentation problems.
Only after this test should you publish a context or concurrency limit. A server that merely loads the checkpoint has demonstrated weight fit, not production capacity.
Quick Recap
Key decisions in one view
- Need one model copy to fit? Increase usable pooled GPU memory or use TP/PP; DP will not solve the fit problem.
- Weights fit but requests fail? Reduce context or concurrency, inspect KV-cache settings and investigate fragmentation or competing processes.
- Considering quantization? Recalculate weights using the format’s byte estimate, then verify native hardware support and quality/performance for the workload.
- Planning local models? Inventory actual checkpoint files and retained variants; do not use a universal disk multiplier.
- Choosing more CPU RAM? Tie the purchase to documented loading or offload behavior, not to parameter count alone.
