There is no defensible universal battery-minute target or percentage oversizing factor for an AI data center. Size the chain from a measured, time-varying critical-facility load; define the outage, transfer and maintenance objectives; then validate UPS power, battery energy, generators and distribution together. AI training can create rapid, synchronized load changes that a steady-state MW calculation misses, so the design must cover continuous demand, transient power, duration, repetition and coincidence across racks.

What you are actually sizing

“Backup power” is a chain, not one rating. A complete design normally includes the utility service and switchgear, UPS power electronics, batteries or another energy-storage system, automatic transfer and paralleling controls, standby generators, distribution buses, cooling and other critical auxiliaries. The chain is only as capable as its weakest operating state.

Start by stating the design boundary. An IT-only calculation covers servers, storage and networking, but the UPS and generator may also have to support cooling controls, pumps, fans, lighting, security, fire systems and other loads that must remain available during an outage. Record whether each figure is IT load, UPS output load or generator-bus load; otherwise apparently comparable MW values describe different systems.

Growth allowance is a project assumption, not a universal AI multiplier. Any additional capacity must be traceable to a deployment plan, measured uncertainty or a reliability requirement.

Why AI load profiles change the calculation

Traditional data-center estimates often emphasize a diversified steady-state load. AI clusters add a time dimension. Training and inference systems can move between compute, communication, memory and idle phases quickly. If many racks make the same transition together, the electrical system sees a step or repeated pulse rather than a smooth average.

Uptime Institute’s 2025 analysis describes rack-cluster fluctuations occurring at millisecond speed and gives examples of sudden changes from several hundred kilowatts to a few megawatts in moderately sized clusters of a few dozen racks. Those are observations from its examples, not a guaranteed envelope for every AI installation. Use telemetry from the proposed workload, or an engineered profile when equipment has not yet been installed.

Measurements to collect

  • Per-rack and per-row real power (kW), apparent power (kVA) and power factor.
  • Minimum, average, 95th/99th-percentile and maximum demand over an interval suitable for the electrical design.
  • Transient amplitude, rise and fall time, duration, repetition rate and time between events.
  • Coincidence: how many racks can change state together, and whether separate clusters are synchronized.
  • Harmonic current, imbalance and any converter-control interaction with the UPS or generator.
  • Cooling and auxiliary-load response to the same workload events.

Do not assume AI phases are uncorrelated. Validate simultaneity from telemetry, the scheduler and the intended deployment architecture. A diversified average can understate the bus, UPS inverter or engine-generator response required when a common workload starts.

Rack figures need context

In a 2025 example, Uptime Institute discussed NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 rack-scale systems at roughly 60–70 kW to more than 150 kW per rack, compared with a 132 kW maximum specification used in its analysis and worst-case assumptions. The values are model- and condition-specific; they should not be applied to another rack design without checking that system’s specification, cooling arrangement and operating mode.

Set resilience and autonomy objectives before choosing equipment

Topology labels describe relationships between modules, not the load that will actually be delivered after a failure. Define the required outcome first:

Common arrangements include:

Arrangement Meaning Capacity and maintenance implication
N Exactly the capacity required for the design load. A module outage or maintenance event can reduce available capacity below the load unless operations shed load.
N+1 One additional module or capacity block beyond the calculated requirement. One block can be unavailable while carrying the design load, but verify overload, battery and distribution limits.
N+2 Two additional blocks beyond the calculated requirement. Provides more tolerance for simultaneous failure or maintenance. Uptime Institute discusses it as one way to avoid repeatedly overloading operating UPS modules during maintenance in AI deployments.
2N Two independent systems, each intended to carry the defined load. Schneider Electric describes 2N as a fully redundant arrangement. Independence must include sources, switchgear, controls, distribution and maintenance procedures, not just two UPS cabinets.

For every topology, calculate delivered kW in normal operation, maintenance mode and the defined failure cases. A name such as N+1 does not reveal whether the surviving modules, bus, battery strings, cooling or generator can support a rapidly changing AI load.

Build the load schedule

Create a time-series load schedule before selecting a UPS or generator. At minimum, include the following rows for each electrical bus or operating mode:

  1. Inventory the connected equipment. List racks, storage, network gear, cooling components, pumps, controls and other critical auxiliaries. Record nameplate kW/kVA and expected operating power.
  2. Add measured behavior. Capture steady demand, peaks and workload transitions. Separate a short transient from a sustained high-load period.
  3. Apply coincidence. Model the number of racks that can transition together, including scheduler-driven synchronized events.
  4. Define future states. Add planned rack generations, denser configurations and commissioning stages as explicit scenarios.
  5. Convert to design cases. Produce at least normal peak, worst credible synchronized step, sustained emergency load and maintenance/failure cases.

Keep kW and kVA separate. UPS and generator nameplates may impose limits on both real and apparent power, while low power factor, harmonics or imbalance can consume kVA capacity before the kW limit is reached.

Size UPS power electronics for continuous and transient demand

Choose UPS modules and a parallel configuration against the load schedule, not an average utilization target. Check:

  • Continuous rated kW and kVA at the site’s voltage, frequency and power factor.
  • Overload magnitude and duration, including repeated overload events.
  • Dynamic response to a step load and to rapid load rejection.
  • Current crest factor, harmonics and rectifier compatibility.
  • Parallel-system controls, circulating-current limits and behavior when a module is unavailable.
  • Battery-interface power limits during both discharge and recharge.
  • Capacity of the UPS output bus, switchgear, busway and downstream protective devices.

Vertiv’s guidance on AI power design says sizing should begin with detailed workload characterization and the intended smoothing objective. Smoothing may require the UPS to absorb short fluctuations even when the generator is sized for a slower, sustained load. Ask the manufacturer for overload curves and dynamic test data for the exact module count, firmware, battery arrangement and operating mode proposed.

Power capacity versus energy capacity

Power capacity answers “how many kW or kVA can the inverter deliver now?” Energy capacity answers “for how long can it deliver that power?” A UPS can have adequate stored kWh but insufficient inverter or battery discharge power for a rapid AI step. Conversely, a large inverter can run out of battery energy before the generator transfer completes. Evaluate both dimensions independently.

How to size the battery

Battery sizing starts with the interruption scenario. Define the time from utility loss to a stable generator-backed source, then add the risk allowance required by the facility’s operating policy. Schneider Electric’s 2020 design discussion cites 10–20 seconds as a typical generator start and load-transfer interval; that is an illustrative interval, not a universal requirement.

Schneider Electric also gave illustrative UPS-runtime ranges by customer type: 1–2 minutes for hyperscale, 5 minutes for cloud and colocation, and 10–15 minutes for financial-industry examples. These examples are not prescriptions for an AI facility. A site with delayed fuel delivery, difficult generator access or a high consequence of failed starts may require a different autonomy target.

Calculate discharge power and energy separately

For each scenario, calculate the battery discharge power at the UPS input and the delivered energy for the required duration. The basic energy relationship is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

required battery energy (kWh) = discharge power (kW) × duration (hours)

Then apply the selected UPS and battery manufacturer’s data for conversion efficiency, minimum end-of-discharge voltage, temperature, aging and allowable depth of discharge. Size to end-of-life capacity rather than new-battery capacity. Include the effect of unequal string sharing, a failed string and the specified maintenance state.

Account for AI transition duty cycle

Minutes-only calculations miss repeated pulses. Vertiv’s 2025 white paper advises considering load-pattern amplitude and frequency, transition duty cycle, smoothing objectives and recharge rate. Insufficient recharge capacity can reduce input-power smoothing and increase battery wear, according to that vendor guidance.

Size the standby generator for sustained load and load steps

Generators are the long-duration source; UPS batteries bridge the interruption and can smooth rapid changes. Size the generator for the critical facility load it must carry after transfer, while validating that it can accept the required steps without unacceptable voltage or frequency excursions.

  1. Establish the post-transfer steady load. Include IT, cooling, pumps, controls and all other loads that remain energized. State whether noncritical loads are shed.
  2. Sequence motor and converter starts. Document chillers, pumps, fans, UPS rectifiers and other large blocks. Their starting currents and controls can be more demanding than their running kW.
  3. Model AI load acceptance. Apply the largest credible synchronized rack transition and repeated events, not only a diversified average.
  4. Check rejection as well as acceptance. A sudden loss of AI load can cause overspeed or voltage excursions if controls respond poorly.
  5. Apply site derating. Account for altitude, ambient temperature, fuel quality, emissions equipment and the selected operating mode.
  6. Verify fuel and service autonomy. Confirm tank volume, replenishment logistics, testing policy and maintenance intervals for the required outage duration.

Uptime Institute warns that fast AI load swings can stress engine generators even when steady-state capacity appears adequate. Obtain transient voltage and frequency response for the proposed generator, alternator, governor and excitation system under the actual UPS and load configuration.

Validate the complete transfer sequence

A dynamic study or witnessed test should follow the real sequence:

  1. Utility voltage or frequency moves outside the ride-through threshold.
  2. UPS inverters support the critical bus and batteries begin discharging.
  3. Generator start command is issued; engines crank, reach speed and establish acceptable voltage and frequency.
  4. Generators synchronize or close to the emergency bus according to the switchgear logic.
  5. UPS rectifiers and other loads transfer or ramp onto the generator source.
  6. AI workloads change state while the generator is accepting load.
  7. Cooling and auxiliary systems follow their control sequence.
  8. Utility returns, the system re-transfers, generators unload and batteries recharge.

Model protective-device coordination, busway ratings, breaker trip curves, bypass paths, grounding, harmonics and controls in each step. Include a failed generator start, a failed UPS module, a battery-string outage, a maintenance bypass and loss of one redundant path. Vendor claims about transient performance are meaningful only for the proposed configuration and operating conditions.

Common sizing mistakes and corrections

Using one percentage oversize factor

No universal AI backup multiplier is established by the cited sources. Replace a blanket percentage with explicit continuous, transient, growth and failure scenarios, each tied to a measured profile or documented assumption.

Equating UPS minutes with generator autonomy

Battery runtime covers the interruption and transfer strategy. Generator fuel autonomy covers a sustained utility outage. Size and verify them as separate requirements, then test the handoff between them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Designing from rack nameplates only

Nameplates do not reveal coincidence, waveform, power factor, cooling response or transition duty cycle. Combine specifications with telemetry and workload-scheduler behavior.

Ignoring end-of-life and recharge

New-battery capacity and a one-time discharge test do not prove repeated AI smoothing capability. Use end-of-life discharge data, recharge limits and thermal-cycle assumptions.

Assuming N+1 guarantees capacity

Check the surviving inverter, battery, bus, cooling and generator path in the exact maintenance and failure state. The topology label alone is insufficient.

Testing only steady state

Include synchronized load steps, load rejection, repeated transitions, generator transfer, cooling starts and failure cases in the dynamic validation plan.

Engineering and compliance checks before procurement

  • Manufacturer-confirmed UPS kW/kVA ratings, overload curves and parallel behavior.
  • Battery discharge, aging, temperature, recharge and cycle-life limits.
  • Generator transient voltage/frequency response, load acceptance and rejection data.
  • Protection coordination, short-circuit ratings, grounding and harmonic studies.
  • Busway, switchgear, bypass and distribution ratings for every topology state.
  • Cooling capacity for UPS, batteries, generators and electrical rooms at design ambient.
  • Fuel storage, replenishment, testing, emissions and environmental permits.
  • Local electrical, fire and building-code requirements verified by the responsible engineer.
  • Integrated-system test scripts with pass/fail thresholds and recovery procedures.

The available published guidance is sufficient to establish a sizing method, not to select an exact MW rating, battery chemistry, autonomy, generator model or fuel volume. A qualified electrical engineer and the equipment manufacturers must validate the final design against site conditions, current standards and the intended AI workload.
