There is no single UPS battery size that fits every AI server or GPU cluster. Size three things separately: the UPS inverter’s kW/kVA and transient capability, the battery’s usable energy and charge/discharge limits for any load-smoothing job, and the stored energy needed for the required outage runtime. A nameplate watt figure or average IT load cannot capture synchronized GPU bursts, recharge limits, power-factor effects, temperature derating, or the battery’s usable state-of-charge window.

Start with a measured or simulated time-based load trace, decide whether the battery must smooth utility power, support an outage, or do both, then use the UPS manufacturer’s model-specific battery curves and engineering tools. The result may be a different battery configuration for two sites with the same average megawatt load.

Why AI workloads make ordinary UPS sizing unreliable

Traditional UPS estimates often begin with a steady server load and a desired runtime. AI clusters are less predictable: GPU jobs can move from idle to high utilization in seconds or milliseconds, and many GPUs can change state together. Those short events can challenge the UPS inverter and controls even when their energy contribution is too small to determine outage runtime.

Vertiv’s 2025 reliability material gives one vendor-published example from its 2024 AI Roadshow: GPU peaks reached 130%–150% of nominal load for as little as 0.4 milliseconds, followed by 100%–125% demand for up to 50 milliseconds. The figure is an illustrative vendor example, not an industry-wide statistic. Vertiv also describes GPU workloads shifting from roughly 10% idle to 100%–150% capacity within seconds or milliseconds. Actual behavior depends on the accelerator, server firmware, workload scheduler, networking, cooling and power-distribution design.

Brief peaks matter because the UPS must deliver current immediately and remain within its overload and control limits. Repeated, longer pulses matter because they can draw energy from the battery faster than the charger replaces it. A long utility outage is a third problem: it is governed mainly by the net energy required over minutes or hours. Treating all three as one average-watt calculation is the common sizing error.

Separate the three UPS and battery jobs

Job Typical time window Primary sizing question What can go wrong if it is missed
UPS power delivery Microseconds to seconds Can the inverter, bypass and controls supply the instantaneous kW, kVA, current and overload profile? Overload transfer, voltage deviation, nuisance bypass or stressed power electronics.
Load smoothing while utility power is present Repeated milliseconds-to-minutes events How much fluctuation must the battery absorb, for how long, and can the charger recover between events? State of charge falls over the workload cycle, smoothing disappears, or batteries and chargers overheat.
Outage autonomy Minutes to hours How much usable AC energy is needed until generator acceptance, a controlled shutdown or another defined endpoint? The UPS shuts down before the endpoint despite apparently adequate nominal kWh.

Decide at the beginning whether you need autonomy, smoothing, or both. A battery selected only for a short generator-start ride-through may not have enough cycling or recharge capability for continuous smoothing. A large energy bank does not make an undersized inverter safe during a transient.

Step 1: Define the job and acceptance criteria

Specify the outage endpoint

Write down the required runtime and what it accomplishes. Examples include riding through the documented generator-start and transfer interval, maintaining critical networking while a controller sheds noncritical loads, or completing an orderly shutdown. State whether the runtime is a minimum at end-of-life battery capacity or a commissioning value. Include the expected ambient temperature and any future load growth that the design must support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specify the smoothing service

If the utility or generator cannot follow fast AI ramps, define the input behavior you want instead of saying “smooth the load.” Choose the percentage of fluctuation to filter and the duration for which that filtering must remain available. Vertiv refers to this percentage as FR%. Also document any maximum input ramp rate, generator loading rule, demand limit or facility power cap. A target that filters a brief 20% pulse is a different battery duty from one that holds a fixed input for several minutes.

Decide whether both services share the battery

When autonomy and smoothing use the same battery, reserve a state-of-charge floor for the outage objective and verify that repeated smoothing events do not consume that reserve. Some installations use controls that suspend smoothing at a defined state of charge; others provide separate energy storage or operating modes. The UPS manufacturer must confirm how its controls prioritize these functions.

Step 2: Obtain a load trace that captures AI behavior

Use measured facility or UPS input data when the cluster exists. For a new deployment, simulate the planned server and GPU profiles and validate the model during commissioning. Sample fast enough to capture the transients relevant to the UPS controls; a one-minute average can erase a sub-second event. Retain both high-speed event data and slower trends for thermal and recharge analysis.

Record at least:

  • Real power in kW and apparent power in kVA, plus power factor.
  • Peak magnitude above the normal operating level.
  • Rise and fall time, event duration and whether the event includes an overshoot.
  • Repetition frequency, on/off pattern, duty cycle and the longest burst.
  • Whether GPUs, servers, racks or rows change load synchronously.
  • Baseline load between events and the load of cooling, networking, storage and other non-GPU equipment.
  • Operating conditions such as inlet temperature, fan state, workload type and scheduler behavior.

Do not substitute GPU thermal design power or a server nameplate for a cluster trace. Nameplate values are useful boundaries for planning, but they do not describe simultaneous utilization, power-factor behavior or the timing that the UPS sees. Include expected growth, failover operation and the effect of adding racks later.

Vendor examples are useful boundaries, not universal requirements

Vertiv reports simulator tests lasting four hours for each of three step patterns: 100 milliseconds on/30 milliseconds off, 500 milliseconds on/500 milliseconds off, and 100 milliseconds on/900 milliseconds off. In those tests, the EXL S1, Trinergy and PowerUPS 9000 handled tested 0%–100% rated-capacity steps without battery involvement when utility input stayed nominal. That result applies to the named systems and scenarios; it does not establish performance for overload transients, another UPS model, a non-nominal source or a different control setting.

Step 3: Size the UPS power path independently of battery kWh

Check kW, kVA and power factor

The inverter must be rated for the real and apparent power of the load. Schneider Electric’s general UPS buying guidance says the UPS VA rating should exceed the total device watt load and that output watt capacity should generally be 20%–25% above the attached load. That is general purchasing guidance, not a substitute for an AI load trace or a data-center overload curve. Confirm the required power factor and whether the UPS can provide the specified kW at the expected kVA.

Review transient response and overload curves

Ask for the exact model’s response time, allowable overload duration at the relevant temperature, current limit, crest-factor capability, inverter-to-bypass behavior and recovery after a step. Check both normal and battery operation. A unit may support a short overload from the utility while limiting the same event on battery, or it may transfer to bypass under conditions that are unacceptable for the AI load.

Account for installation conditions

Apply the manufacturer’s ambient derating, altitude limits, harmonic limits, maintenance-bypass arrangement and upstream breaker coordination. Verify that the load’s rectifiers and power supplies are compatible with the UPS waveform and that redundancy assumptions still hold when one module is unavailable. If the design relies on N+1 capacity, calculate the AI transient with the largest module out of service, not only at full modular capacity.

More battery modules cannot repair an inverter that is too small or an overload curve that expires before the event ends. Conversely, a large inverter with too little usable battery energy will still fail the runtime requirement.

Step 4: Size battery energy for repetitive smoothing

Translate the smoothing target into battery power

Define the input power you want the UPS to present to the utility or generator, then compare it with the actual load trace. Conceptually, the battery power at each instant is the difference between the load and that target:

Pbattery(t) = Pload(t) − Ptarget(t)

Positive values represent discharge and negative values represent recharge. Integrating the discharge portion over each event gives the energy that must come from the battery; integrating the recharge portion shows how much energy the charger must return. This relationship is a planning model, not a universal manufacturer sizing formula. The UPS controls, conversion losses, current limits and state-of-charge rules determine the actual result.

Choose the duration, not just the percentage

A smoothing fraction has no meaning without a sustain time. Filtering 50% of a 0.4-millisecond spike may require little energy but substantial instantaneous current. Holding the input flat for repeated 500-millisecond pulses, or for a several-minute demand excursion, can require materially more usable energy. Specify the worst event, the longest sequence, and the recovery interval between sequences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use usable energy and current limits

Nominal battery kWh is not the same as usable AC energy. Account for inverter and battery efficiency, minimum and maximum state of charge, discharge-rate effects, temperature, aging reserve, cable and cabinet losses, and the UPS’s low-voltage cutoff. A battery that has enough theoretical energy at a slow discharge rate may not deliver the required current during a fast pulse. Obtain model-specific discharge curves rather than applying a single conversion from kWh to runtime.

Protect the autonomy reserve

If smoothing and outage backup share a bank, set a control floor that leaves the required outage energy available. The design should state what happens when the battery reaches that floor: smoothing may reduce its percentage, stop temporarily, or allow the utility to see the original load. Verify that these transitions do not create a new power step that violates the generator or upstream limit.

Step 5: Size battery energy for outage autonomy

For an outage, start with the net critical load expected during the entire runtime, including UPS losses and any equipment that remains energized. Then apply the UPS and battery manufacturer’s runtime tables or sizing software for the selected model, battery type, temperature and end-of-life condition. Do not divide a desired runtime by a nominal kWh number and assume the result is a valid battery count.

Define whether the load is constant, staged or shedding during the outage. A generator-start ride-through may have a high initial load and a lower post-transfer load; a controlled shutdown may include a short period of storage and network activity. The battery must support the highest current during each stage as well as the total energy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

External battery cabinets or modules can make longer runtimes practical, but voltage, connectoring, battery-management communication, protection, cabinet ratings and approved combinations are UPS-model dependent. Schneider Electric notes that some enterprise configurations support external battery packs. Confirm the exact chemistry, voltage string, cabinet, breaker and monitoring interface with the UPS manufacturer rather than mixing nominally similar modules.

Step 6: Check recharge equilibrium and repetitive duty

For a repeating AI workload, a battery is sustainable only if the charger can restore at least the energy removed over the workload cycle, with margin for losses and operating limits. Vertiv warns that a recharge rate that cannot keep pace with repetitive discharge can impair smoothing availability and stress the batteries. Calculate the energy removed per cycle, available recharge power, time between events and the state-of-charge trajectory over the longest repeating window.

  • Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices

Check these values with the UPS vendor:

  • Maximum discharge current and pulse duration.
  • Maximum recharge current and recharge power in the selected operating mode.
  • Time to recover from each event and from the worst event sequence.
  • Whether recharge is limited while the UPS is at high load or in a particular redundancy state.
  • Battery temperature rise, ventilation and thermal runaway protections.
  • How controls behave when state of charge, temperature or battery health reaches a limit.

Repeatedly driving a UPS into overload can also stress power electronics. If the utility or generator cannot accept the raw load trace, coordinate the smoothing control with facility power management instead of relying on the battery to absorb every excursion indefinitely.

Step 7: Select chemistry and operating window with the UPS maker

Battery chemistry affects usable state-of-charge range, power capability, thermal behavior, maintenance, monitoring and replacement planning. The same nominal kWh can produce different smoothing performance in different UPS platforms because the permitted voltage window, current limit, charger profile and battery-management interface differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the manufacturer to state:

  • Approved battery chemistries and exact module or cabinet part numbers.
  • Usable state-of-charge range for both smoothing and outage operation.
  • End-of-life capacity assumption and required reserve.
  • Discharge curves at the pulse current and temperature in your trace.
  • Recharge profile, balancing behavior and communications requirements.
  • Service intervals, replacement method, fault isolation and monitoring points.

Do not combine cabinets merely because their voltage or kWh label appears compatible. Protection settings, firmware and battery-management communications must be approved as a system.

A practical end-to-end sizing workflow

  1. Set the job. Record the outage endpoint, minimum runtime, smoothing requirement, allowed input behavior and whether both services share the battery.
  2. Get the trace. Measure or simulate real kW and kVA at a resolution that preserves the relevant transients. Include synchronization among GPUs and racks, cooling and future growth.
  3. Define the upstream target. Choose the fluctuation percentage to filter, the sustain duration, the maximum input ramp and the state-of-charge floor at which smoothing changes or stops.
  4. Validate the power electronics. Check UPS kW, kVA, power factor, transient response, overload duration, bypass behavior, ambient derating, redundancy and load compatibility for the exact model.
  5. Calculate the two battery duties. Determine smoothing discharge and recharge energy over the repeating window, then determine outage energy and current over the required runtime. Apply efficiency, usable state-of-charge, temperature and aging limits.
  6. Check current and recovery. Confirm pulse current, maximum recharge power, recovery time and long-term charge/discharge balance with the manufacturer’s curves or software.
  7. Select compatible modules. Match chemistry, voltage, cabinet, protection and battery-management interface to the approved UPS configuration.
  8. Validate in operation. Simulate or test a representative trace where feasible. Monitor state of charge, temperature, alarms, input and output power, bypass events and recharge behavior.
  9. Reassess changes. Repeat the review after adding racks, changing GPU generations, updating UPS firmware, replacing batteries, modifying generator settings or changing workload scheduling.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using average watts as the battery size

Problem: Averages hide synchronized peaks and duty cycles. Correction: retain the high-speed trace and calculate both instantaneous power and integrated energy.

Adding batteries to fix an inverter overload

Problem: Extra kWh does not raise the UPS current limit or extend an overload curve. Correction: select a UPS with adequate kW, kVA, transient response and overload capability first.

Designing only for the generator-start interval

Problem: Repetitive smoothing can steadily deplete the battery before an outage. Correction: model the longest workload cycle, recharge equilibrium and the protected state-of-charge reserve.

Assuming every battery kWh reaches the load

Problem: Efficiency, cutoff voltage, temperature, aging and current limits reduce usable AC energy. Correction: use the exact UPS and battery discharge curves at the design conditions.

Ignoring apparent power

Problem: A load can fit the kW number while exceeding the UPS VA or current rating. Correction: capture kW, kVA and power factor in the trace and check the manufacturer’s operating envelope.

Applying a generic 20%–25% margin as the final answer

Problem: Schneider Electric’s 20%–25% output-watt headroom is broad buying guidance and does not describe AI transients or a particular overload curve. Correction: use it only as an initial planning margin, then validate the exact profile and model.

Mixing unapproved cabinets or chemistries

Problem: Voltage, protection and battery-management interfaces may be incompatible. Correction: use the UPS maker’s approved compatibility list and engineering review.

What to monitor after commissioning

Install monitoring that shows the relationship between workload and battery behavior, not just a single “battery healthy” status. Trend UPS input and output kW/kVA, power factor, peak events, battery current, state of charge, temperature, recharge power, bypass transfers and alarm history. Correlate those records with GPU job schedules and rack-level measurements.

Set alerts for declining state of charge during a repeating workload, recharge that never reaches the expected level, rising battery temperature, repeated overload or bypass events, and a change in peak synchronization. A workload that becomes more bursty can invalidate a design even when its daily energy consumption is unchanged.

What the available evidence can and cannot establish

The vendor examples cited here demonstrate why waveform and repetition matter, but they do not provide a cross-vendor battery formula or a universal battery count. Vertiv’s published transient examples and simulator results are tied to its stated profiles, test conditions and named UPS systems. Schneider Electric’s watts-versus-VA and headroom guidance is general rather than AI-specific. Exact capacity depends on the site trace, smoothing fraction and duration, UPS model, battery chemistry, usable state-of-charge, efficiency, recharge power, temperature and aging assumptions.

For a live facility, give the measured or simulated trace and the required operating objectives to the UPS manufacturer or a qualified electrical engineer. Request a model-specific battery schedule, overload analysis, recharge-equilibrium check and commissioning test plan. That is the only defensible way to turn a rapidly changing AI load into a battery cabinet and UPS configuration.
