The right portable power station is the one whose usable watt-hours cover your essential loads for the required outage period and whose continuous and surge watt ratings can start and run those loads together. There is no universal “home size.” Build a load schedule from your own appliance labels, manuals, or measurements, then check energy, output, startup demand, ports, and recharge options separately.

Use this sequence: list essential devices, calculate each device’s energy, add an allowance for conversion losses and uncertainty, total simultaneous running watts, verify motor-start surge, and plan how you will recharge if the outage lasts longer than the stored energy.

What you are actually sizing

A power station has two limits that answer different questions:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Rating What it tells you How to use it
Watts (W) Instantaneous power the inverter can deliver Compare with the loads you expect to run at the same time, plus motor or compressor startup demand.
Watt-hours (Wh) Stored energy Compare with the total energy your devices will consume over the outage schedule.

A unit can have enough stored energy but still shut down when several appliances exceed its continuous output. Conversely, a high-wattage inverter can run a load briefly but exhaust a small battery quickly. Size both limits independently.

Step 1: Define the outage you want to cover

Write down the loads that matter during an outage and the time period you are planning for. A two-hour interruption has a different target from a two-day storm. Separate “must run” devices from conveniences so the calculation reflects a realistic priority order.

Make a priority list

  • Life and safety: equipment and communications that must remain available, subject to the equipment maker’s backup instructions.
  • Food protection: refrigerator or freezer operation, allowing for compressor cycling rather than assuming continuous operation.
  • Basic comfort: lights, internet equipment, fans, or a small television.
  • Convenience: cooking appliances, tools, entertainment, and other loads that can be scheduled when capacity permits.

Record the number of hours each item needs to operate. If an appliance will run only periodically, record its estimated operating hours or duty cycle instead of the full outage duration.

Step 2: Collect real load data

Use the appliance label, owner’s manual, manufacturer documentation, or a plug-in power meter. A generic online wattage chart is only a starting point because models differ and cycling devices do not draw their rated running power continuously.

Record these fields for every device

  • Running watts (or volts and amps from which watts can be calculated).
  • Expected operating hours during the outage.
  • Duty cycle for loads that turn on and off, such as a refrigerator compressor.
  • Startup or inrush demand for motors, compressors, pumps, and some power supplies.
  • Whether the device can use the station’s AC outlet, USB output, or DC output at the required voltage.

For a cycling load, calculate operating time rather than treating its nameplate rating as continuous. A refrigerator rated at a particular running wattage may operate for only part of each hour, and its actual cycle depends on temperature, contents, door openings, and the specific model.

Step 3: Calculate energy for the outage period

For each device, use:

energy (Wh) = watts × operating hours × duty cycle

Use a duty cycle of 1 when a load is expected to run continuously. For a device that runs for half of the scheduled period, use 0.5, provided that estimate reflects the actual appliance. Sum every device’s result:

Illustrative calculation

The following example is deliberately hypothetical; replace every value with measurements from your own appliances.

Load Assumed running draw Scheduled period Duty cycle Energy
Refrigerator 150 W 12 hours 0.35 630 Wh
Wi-Fi router 12 W 12 hours 1.0 144 Wh
LED lighting 30 W 6 hours 1.0 180 Wh
Phone charging 20 W 2 hours 1.0 40 Wh
Calculated load energy 994 Wh

The 994 Wh result is the appliances’ estimated consumption, not a guarantee that a 994 Wh battery will deliver it through AC outlets. Inverter losses, battery condition, temperature, reserve, and estimation error reduce the energy available to the loads.

Step 4: Convert the load total into a capacity target

Start with the manufacturer’s stated usable capacity where it is provided, rather than assuming the nameplate battery capacity is fully available at the AC outlet. Then add a reasonable allowance for conversion losses, battery aging, cold or hot conditions, reserve, and uncertainty in your load estimates.

No universal reserve percentage is established for every station and household. The appropriate margin depends on the model’s usable-capacity specification, battery management limits, ambient conditions, and how accurately you measured the loads. If your result is close to the unit’s usable capacity, choose a larger unit or reduce the scheduled loads instead of treating the estimate as exact.

Do not confuse rated capacity with runtime

Runtime is affected by output path and operating conditions. AC conversion generally consumes energy, and a small load can be inefficient if the station’s inverter remains active for the entire period. USB or DC operation may avoid some conversion, but only when the appliance supports the required connection and voltage. Use the station maker’s runtime guidance as a model-specific estimate, not as a promise for every device.

  • 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝟗𝟗% 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬: 1,500W continuous output and 3,000W peak output keep nearly every essential appliance running. Actual runtime will vary depending on your refrigerator model, usage habits, and ambient temperature.
  • 𝟔 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞: Supports up to 400W solar input. Power up via AC + solar, a wall outlet, a generator, solar panels, an alternator charger, or a car outlet—anytime, anywhere.

Step 5: Check continuous output

Add the running watts of every load that may operate simultaneously:

simultaneous running watts = load₁ + load₂ + load₃ + …

Compare that sum with the station’s continuous AC output rating. Include devices that cycle on unexpectedly; a refrigerator may start while lights, networking equipment, or a fan are already running. If the total is near the rating, schedule loads so fewer run together or select a station with more continuous output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check ports and electrical paths

  • Confirm the AC outlet voltage and frequency match the appliance requirements.
  • Check the number and type of AC, USB, and DC ports before assuming every device can connect at once.
  • Verify the port’s individual limit as well as the station’s total output limit.
  • Use the appropriate cable and avoid improvised adapters or overloaded power strips.

Step 6: Check startup and surge demand

Motors and compressors can draw substantially more than their running watts while starting. Compare the largest relevant startup demand with the station’s surge rating and the duration for which that surge is supported. A station may pass a simple running-watt calculation but still trip when a refrigerator compressor, pump, or motor starts.

Find startup information in the appliance manual or from a measurement that captures inrush. If no value is available, treat the uncertainty as a reason to leave more output headroom rather than assuming the station’s peak rating will work. Also check whether the station permits surge at the same time other loads are operating.

Step 7: Plan recharge for a long outage

Stored energy covers only the period represented by the capacity calculation. For a longer outage, identify how the station will be recharged and how much energy that source can realistically provide.

Solar charging

Check the station’s maximum solar-input wattage, voltage and current window, connector, and whether the panels are compatible. The panel’s advertised wattage is not the same as energy delivered every hour: shade, clouds, panel orientation, temperature, and the available daylight determine actual production. Keep enough stored energy to cover periods when solar input is low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other charging sources

If grid power returns intermittently, confirm the station’s AC charging rate and the circuit you intend to use. A vehicle, external battery, or another source may require a specific input voltage, cable, or accessory. Verify those limits in the exact model manual before connecting anything.

Capacity alone does not establish multi-day capability. A credible plan states both the initial stored energy and the expected recharge path during the outage.

A model-specific example: EcoFlow DELTA 2

The US DELTA 2 user manual lists the following manufacturer specifications:

Specification Manual value Qualification
Battery capacity 1,024 Wh Manufacturer rating for the US model; usable AC energy depends on conversion and operating conditions.
Total AC output 1,800 W Compare with simultaneous running loads and the unit’s regional output limits.
Surge output 2,700 W Check the manual’s supported surge behavior and the appliance’s startup demand.
Chemistry LFP Model specification, not a guarantee of runtime for a particular load.
Maximum solar input 500 W Input limit; actual solar energy varies with conditions.
Extra-battery support One Smart Extra Battery Accessory compatibility must be confirmed for the exact model and region.
EPS switchover 30 ms Manufacturer-stated figure; verify whether the connected equipment can tolerate that transition.

The manufacturer presents this model as an expandable home-backup product and identifies portable solar panels as recharge options. These specifications do not show that it will cover a particular household: your calculated Wh target, simultaneous watts, startup demand, ports, and recharge plan still determine suitability.

Medical equipment requires a separate compatibility decision

Do not infer medical suitability from a general runtime calculation. Follow the medical-device maker’s backup instructions and arrange an approved backup system. The DELTA 2 manual states: “This product is not recommended for powering medical emergency equipment related to personal safety, including but not limited to medical grade ventilators (hospital CPAP: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) or artificial lungs (ECMO).” That is a model-specific warning, but it illustrates why a consumer power station should not be treated as a universal medical backup.

A CPAP with a humidifier can draw more power than the same machine without humidification, and the device maker’s specifications should govern the calculation. Ask the clinician or equipment provider about an outage plan rather than relying on an estimated battery runtime.

Battery station versus fuel generator

A battery station and an engine-driven generator are not interchangeable. A fuel generator introduces carbon-monoxide and fuel-handling hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says portable generators must be used outdoors and far from the home and openings, never indoors or in enclosed areas, and that the home should have a working carbon-monoxide alarm. Its warning is explicit: “NEVER use portable generators indoors or in garages, basements, or sheds.”

These instructions apply to generators, not to a battery station with no combustion engine. Do not run an engine generator in a garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed location, and do not place it near doors, windows, or vents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume whole-home backup

A portable station powers connected appliances within its rated output. It does not automatically energize a home’s wiring or every circuit. Whole-home or selected-circuit operation requires equipment and an electrical installation designed for that purpose, along with the correct transfer arrangement, rated loads, regional configuration, and safety controls.

Never connect a station to a household receptacle in a way that can backfeed building wiring. For transfer equipment, inlet wiring, panel integration, or questions about local electrical rules, use current manufacturer documentation and a qualified electrician.

Common sizing failures and fixes

The battery runs out earlier than expected

  • Cause: Nameplate watts were treated as continuous, or inverter losses and reserve were ignored.
  • Fix: Measure actual operating time, use usable-capacity information, and add a model-appropriate margin.

The station shuts down when a compressor starts

  • Cause: Running watts fit, but startup demand exceeded surge capability or surge duration.
  • Fix: Obtain the appliance’s inrush requirement, reduce simultaneous loads, or choose a unit with suitable surge support.

Several “small” devices overload the inverter

  • Cause: Loads were evaluated one at a time instead of as a simultaneous total.
  • Fix: Add all running watts for the intended schedule and check the total AC output rating.

Solar does not restore the expected energy

  • Cause: Panel rating was mistaken for guaranteed hourly production.
  • Fix: Account for daylight, shade, weather, orientation, temperature, and the station’s input limits; retain reserve for poor conditions.

A plug or adapter does not work

  • Cause: Wrong voltage, connector, port limit, or incompatible accessory.
  • Fix: Match the appliance requirements and the exact station manual before connecting it.

Pre-outage checklist

  1. Write the outage duration you are planning for.
  2. Mark essential, useful, and optional loads.
  3. Record each appliance’s running watts, operating hours, duty cycle, and startup demand.
  4. Calculate watt-hours for each item and sum them.
  5. Compare the sum with the station’s usable capacity, allowing for losses, age, temperature, reserve, and uncertainty.
  6. Add simultaneous running watts and compare them with continuous AC output.
  7. Compare the largest startup demand with surge rating and duration.
  8. Verify outlet voltage, port types, cable requirements, and individual port limits.
  9. Document the recharge source, input limits, and likely weather or fuel constraints.
  10. Read the current manual for the exact model and region, especially medical and safety restrictions.
  11. Test the intended setup before an outage, without connecting prohibited or life-sustaining equipment.

How to choose among candidate stations

When comparing two or more models, use the same household load budget for each. Evaluate:

Comparison point Question to answer
Usable energy Does the manufacturer’s usable Wh figure exceed the adjusted outage target?
Continuous output Can all scheduled loads run together without exceeding the AC rating?
Surge capability Can the unit start the largest motor or compressor for the stated duration?
Ports and voltage Can every appliance connect through a suitable, correctly rated path?
Recharge input Can available solar, AC, vehicle, or other sources recharge it within the outage conditions?
Expandability Are extra batteries and charging accessories explicitly compatible with this model and region?
Physical constraints Can you safely store, move, ventilate, and protect the unit in the intended location?
Restrictions and support Do the current manual, warranty, regional specifications, and safety notices fit your use?

Do not rank stations by battery capacity alone. A smaller unit with adequate surge, ports, and recharge options can be a better match than a larger unit whose inverter or connection path cannot support your essential loads.
