The right portable power station is the smallest system that can (1) store enough usable energy for your selected outage loads and (2) deliver enough continuous and startup power to run them safely. Start with a load list, not a battery-size guess.

For each device, record its average watts, operating hours, duty cycle and startup demand. Calculate energy with watt-hours = watts × hours, adjust for conversion losses and a reserve, then separately verify continuous output, surge output, voltage, ports and recharge options. A large watt-hour rating cannot compensate for an inverter that cannot start a refrigerator or support the required voltage.

What you are sizing: energy, output and compatibility

Portable-station specifications describe different limits. Confusing them is the most common sizing error.

Watt-hours (Wh) determine runtime

Watt-hours represent stored energy. Schneider Electric’s battery-sizing FAQ states the basic relationship as “WATT-HOURS = WATTS × HOURS.” A 100-watt load running for five hours therefore uses 500 Wh before losses and reserve. The figure on a station’s label is usually nominal battery capacity; an AC appliance receives less because the battery, inverter and wiring consume energy.

Continuous watts determine what can run together

Continuous output is the power the inverter or DC section can provide while devices are operating normally. Add the running watts of loads that may operate at the same time and compare the total with the station’s continuous rating for the exact output being used. A station can have ample Wh yet shut down if simultaneous running watts exceed its inverter limit.

Surge watts determine whether motors can start

Starting watts are a brief demand when a motor or compressor begins. Refrigerators, freezers, pumps, furnaces, compressors and motor-driven tools can draw substantially more than their running watts for a short period. Compare the appliance’s documented starting requirement with the station’s surge rating and its stated surge duration. A watt-hour calculation does not solve an inverter-output shortfall.

Voltage, phase and ports are pass/fail requirements

Check AC voltage, phase, outlet type, DC limits and USB specifications before comparing capacity. In the United States, most household equipment uses 120 V. Split-phase 240 V appliances need a station specifically rated for that service or a compatible paired system. A station with the right capacity but the wrong voltage, connector or output limit is not suitable.

Step 1: Define the outage you are planning for

There is no universal “home size” for a portable station. The answer depends on which loads you consider essential, how long they must operate and whether you can recharge during the outage.

Separate essential and optional loads

Make two lists. Essential loads might include medical equipment, communications, refrigeration, a modem or router, selected lighting and a heating or cooling control. Optional loads can include entertainment, kitchen appliances and tools. Do not assume every appliance runs simultaneously; identify the combinations that realistically overlap.

Choose a duration and operating pattern

Write down the target in hours or nights. A device that cycles is different from one that runs continuously: estimate its average consumption over the period, not only its nameplate maximum. Note whether you expect to recharge from an outlet, vehicle, solar array or another supported source. A one-night plan and a multi-day plan may require different systems even for the same load list.

Account for the worst useful case

Use the longest outage you are actually preparing for, then identify the highest simultaneous running load and the largest startup event. If a critical device must run while a refrigerator starts, that combination becomes your output test. If you will manually stagger appliances, document that procedure and leave practical headroom for mistakes.

Step 2: Measure or document every load

For each device, collect the information in this table. A label or manual may show running watts, amps, voltage or a range; a plug-in power meter can provide a more realistic average for variable loads.

Record Why it matters Where to find it
Running watts or volts and amps Sets normal continuous output and contributes to energy use. Rating plate, manual or measured consumption.
Operating hours Converts power into watt-hours. Your outage plan and observed schedule.
Duty cycle A compressor or thermostat may run only part of the time; average use can be lower than nameplate watts. Observation, meter readings or manufacturer information.
Starting or surge watts Determines whether the inverter can start a motor or compressor. Manual, manufacturer specification or a qualified measurement.
Voltage, phase and connector Confirms that the station can supply the load at the required electrical configuration. Appliance label and station documentation.
Input and recharge needs Determines whether the station can be replenished during a long outage. Station manual and charger or solar specifications.

Use measured averages when a duty cycle varies. Do not substitute a battery-bank rule for portable-station behavior: Schneider Electric’s recommendation of approximately twice expected amp-hour use applies to its specific Conext SW battery-sizing context, not every portable power station.

Step 3: Calculate the required energy

Use the basic load calculation

For each device:

Device Wh = average watts × hours of operation

Add the device results:

Total load Wh = sum of all device Wh values

For a cycling load, use its average measured draw over the planned interval. For a device that runs continuously, use its running watts for every hour it must remain on. If a load operates only at particular times, count those hours rather than the entire outage.

Adjust for AC conversion and reserve

AC appliances consume energy through the station’s inverter, so not all nominal battery Wh reaches the outlet. An Anker SOLIX buying guide dated September 18, 2026, calls 0.85 a reasonable early-planning efficiency assumption and says actual results vary with load, inverter, temperature, battery condition and equipment. As an estimate, divide planned AC load Wh by 0.85; treat the result as planning guidance, not a guaranteed runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You also need reserve for uncertainty, startup events and changing conditions. An Anker SOLIX UK sizing example turns 100 W for five hours (500 Wh) into roughly 600 Wh with a 20% buffer. That is an illustration, not a universal margin or a promise. Choose and document a reserve that reflects how uncertain your measurements are; do not quietly apply multiple margins and assume the result is precise.

Worked calculation using the published example

Suppose one essential load is measured at 100 W for five hours. The raw requirement is 500 Wh. Applying the 20% illustrative buffer produces approximately 600 Wh. If the load is supplied through AC, a separate efficiency adjustment may be relevant; whether you use a buffer, an efficiency factor or both should be explicit so you do not double-count or understate losses. Repeat the calculation for every load and add the results before selecting a station.

Include recharge energy for extended outages

For an outage longer than the initial battery reserve, runtime is only one part of the plan. Check the station’s maximum AC, solar, vehicle or alternator input, the available source energy and the time required to replenish the battery. A system that meets the first-night Wh target but cannot recharge from your available source will not meet a multi-day target.

Step 4: Check continuous output and startup surge separately

Continuous-output test

  1. List the devices that may be on at the same time.
  2. Add their running watts, using measured averages where appropriate.
  3. Compare that total with the station’s continuous AC or DC rating for the ports you will use.
  4. Leave operating headroom for variation and for a device that cycles on while another load is active.

Perform the comparison using the station’s published rating, not a marketing peak figure. If the station has separate limits for AC outlets, USB ports or DC outputs, verify each group and any combined-output limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Startup-surge test

  1. Identify every motor, compressor, pump or tool in the load list.
  2. Find its starting-watt requirement and any stated duration.
  3. Determine which other loads will be running at that instant.
  4. Compare the combined event with the station’s surge rating and surge-duration specification.
  5. If the appliance requirement is unknown, do not assume the station’s Wh capacity will make it start; obtain a documented requirement or use qualified electrical advice.

Starting demand may occur repeatedly. A refrigerator that restarts after a brief interruption can create several surge events, so the system must tolerate each event rather than only one idealized startup.

Step 5: Verify electrical compatibility

Voltage and phase

Match the station’s AC voltage and phase to the appliance. In the US context described by Anker SOLIX, ordinary household equipment is generally 120 V, while split-phase 240 V appliances require a compatible station or paired configuration. Do not connect a 240 V appliance to a single 120 V output and expect a larger battery to correct the mismatch.

Outlets, DC and USB ports

Count the outlets and inspect their ratings. Confirm that USB-C, USB-A, 12 V DC or other ports provide the voltage, current and protocol required by each device. Check whether using several output types reduces the station’s combined limit. Adapters can change the connector but cannot create missing voltage, phase or power capability.

Expansion batteries and operating conditions

If the station supports expansion, verify how expansion capacity is specified, whether it changes output limits, and whether the added battery can be charged by the inputs you plan to use. Also check the documented operating and storage temperature, ventilation requirements, noise and weight. Cold temperatures, heat and battery condition can reduce the runtime assumed in a simple calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare two stations fairly

Use exactly the same load list, simultaneous-load assumptions and outage duration for every candidate. Compare the following rather than ranking products by Wh alone.

Comparison point Questions to answer
Usable energy What energy is available to your AC and DC loads after conversion losses? What runtime does the manufacturer document under comparable conditions?
Continuous output Can the station run the largest realistic combination of loads without exceeding its AC or DC limit?
Surge output What peak wattage is supported, for how long, and is it sufficient for each motor or compressor startup?
Voltage and phase Does it match every critical appliance, including any 240 V split-phase requirement?
Ports and combined limits Are the outlet types, USB/DC ratings and simultaneous-use limits suitable?
Recharge What AC, solar, vehicle or alternator inputs are supported, at what maximum rate, and how long will replenishment take?
Expansion Can additional batteries be used, and do they alter capacity, output or charging requirements?
Practical constraints What are the weight, dimensions, noise, storage conditions, operating conditions, warranty and total system cost?

A documented example, not a universal recommendation

An Anker SOLIX home-backup guide checked in 2026 lists the SOLIX S2000 at 2,010 Wh, 1,500 W rated AC output and up to 3,000 W peak output. Those are the guide’s stated specifications at that time. Confirm current model documentation before purchase, and do not infer a guaranteed runtime without your load, efficiency, temperature and recharge conditions.

Decide whether a portable station is the right backup arrangement

Selected-load backup

A portable station is generally easiest to use for selected appliances and devices that you plug directly into its outlets. This approach makes the load and output limits visible and avoids energizing circuits that were not designed for the connection.

Connection to household circuits

Do not power house wiring by plugging a portable generator into a wall outlet. FEMA’s Ready.gov CERT manual warns against this backfeed method for portable generators. That warning does not replace the installation instructions for every battery station, but the safety principle remains important: if a station is connected to household circuits, use only a compatible transfer arrangement specified for that system and obtain qualified electrical guidance appropriate to local requirements. Never improvise a cord or assume a larger battery makes backfeeding safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the station cannot meet the requirement

If your load list includes hard-wired 240 V equipment, large heating or cooling loads, or several high-surge motors, a small plug-in station may be the wrong architecture. Rework the essential-load list, add a compatible paired or expanded system if the manufacturer supports it, or use a properly installed backup system designed for those circuits.

Common sizing mistakes and corrections

Choosing by Wh alone

Symptom: The battery appears large but the station shuts down when an appliance starts.
Correction: Recheck continuous watts, surge watts and surge duration independently of capacity.

Using nameplate watts as runtime for a cycling appliance

Symptom: Your runtime estimate is much shorter than observed normal use, or you overbuy based on a maximum rating.
Correction: Measure average consumption over a representative period and document the duty cycle, while retaining enough headroom for startup and changing conditions.

Ignoring inverter losses and reserve

Symptom: The arithmetic says the battery should last, but AC loads stop early.
Correction: Apply a clearly labeled planning efficiency assumption such as the 0.85 early estimate cited by Anker SOLIX, account for reserve, and recognize that actual results vary.

Assuming a 240 V appliance will work from a 120 V outlet

Symptom: The station has capacity but the appliance cannot operate.
Correction: Verify voltage and phase before purchase; use only a station or paired configuration explicitly rated for the appliance.

Planning a long outage without a recharge path

Symptom: The initial battery lasts the first period but cannot be replenished.
Correction: Check supported AC, solar, vehicle or alternator inputs, source availability, maximum input and recharge time as part of the sizing calculation.

Connecting through a wall outlet

Symptom: Someone proposes a male-to-male cord or another improvised backfeed method.
Correction: Do not do it. Follow the exact connection method approved for the station and use compatible transfer equipment and qualified electrical guidance where household circuits are involved.
