Size a portable power station in two separate checks: power and energy. Its continuous AC output must cover the refrigerator and every other device running at the same time, while its surge rating must cover the compressor’s startup. Its battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) must cover the refrigerator’s measured or model-estimated energy use, the other devices’ consumption, the planned outage duration, and a practical allowance for conversion losses and uncertainty. No single 500 Wh, 1,000 Wh, or 2,000 Wh station fits every refrigerator.

Wh and W answer different sizing questions

Portable power stations are commonly described with two numbers:

Specification What it tells you How to use it for a refrigerator
Battery capacity (Wh) How much energy is stored in the battery Estimate whether the station can run the refrigerator and other devices for the required number of hours or days.
Continuous AC output (W) The load the inverter can supply continuously Add the running watts of all devices that may operate simultaneously and keep the total below this rating.
Surge or peak output (W) A higher output available only for a short period, if the manufacturer specifies one Compare it with the refrigerator compressor’s starting demand. Do not treat a short-duration surge rating as continuous output.

A station can have plenty of Wh but still fail to start a refrigerator if its inverter cannot supply the compressor’s startup demand. Conversely, a high-wattage inverter may start the refrigerator but run out of stored energy quickly.

Step 1: identify the refrigerator’s actual energy use

Use the model number, not a generic wattage

Find the refrigerator model number on its data plate, owner’s manual, or purchase record. A refrigerator’s compressor cycles on and off, so the wattage printed on a label is not necessarily its average daily consumption. Age, size, insulation, ambient temperature, door openings, thermostat settings, and defrost behavior all affect energy use.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Refrigerator and Freezer Energy Rating Search Tool lets you search by appliance type, brand, model number, and year. It reports estimated consumption ranges for covered U.S. consumer models. The page states that not all models are included and describes coverage for models larger than 10 cubic feet. Treat a lookup result as a model-specific estimate, not a guarantee for an appliance in your kitchen.

Convert the rating into watt-hours

If the refrigerator’s consumption is listed in kilowatt-hours (kWh), convert it before doing the station calculation:

1 kWh = 1,000 Wh

For example, a model estimate of 1.2 kWh per day is 1,200 Wh per day. Multiply that daily figure by the number of backup days. If the source gives a range, calculate both the lower and upper cases and size for conditions that are realistic for your outage.

Measure the appliance when possible

A plug-in energy meter that records cumulative kWh can provide a better estimate than a momentary watt reading. Record consumption over a representative period that includes normal compressor cycling and at least one defrost cycle. Do not infer a full day’s energy from a single instant on the display: the compressor may be off when you look.

Use equipment rated for the refrigerator’s voltage and current, and follow the meter and refrigerator manufacturers’ instructions. If you cannot measure, use the model-specific estimate and add a margin rather than pretending the result is exact.

Step 2: check compressor startup and surge capability

Why the starting load matters

A conventional compressor refrigerator draws little or no power while the compressor is off, runs at a higher level while cooling, and briefly demands more when the compressor starts. The inverter must tolerate that starting event while any other devices are already connected.

A U.S. Department of Energy-hosted refrigeration paper from 2018 describes changing compressor and defrost loads. In one example, startup power was reported as “35% higher than the steady state power consumption.” That is an example from a particular system, not a universal multiplier for every refrigerator. Some compressors start with a substantially different profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find a defensible startup number

  • Check the refrigerator manual or manufacturer specifications for locked-rotor, starting, or surge current.
  • Ask the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician if the documentation does not state it.
  • Use an appropriately rated power analyzer that captures the short startup event. Many basic plug-in meters display only an averaged or delayed value and can miss the peak.

Compare the measured or documented startup requirement with the station’s surge rating and its stated surge duration, if provided. Leave headroom for other loads that may be running at the same instant. A station advertised as capable of a particular peak for a fraction of a second should not be expected to sustain that number for minutes.

Step 3: add every device that will run at the same time

Make two lists: devices that must operate simultaneously with the refrigerator, and devices that can be used at different times. Add the running watts of the simultaneous group and compare that total with the station’s continuous AC output.

Load category What to record Why it affects sizing
Refrigerator Running watts, startup demand, and daily Wh It is both a continuous-output challenge at startup and the main energy load.
Communications Router, modem, phone or laptop charger watts and hours of use Small chargers can run for many hours and materially increase daily Wh.
Lighting Actual lamp wattage and expected hours Several lights used together count toward the inverter limit.
Medical or accessibility equipment Manufacturer input watts, duty cycle, and backup requirements Reliability and required runtime may justify more reserve than convenience loads.
Other appliances Running and startup watts Motors, pumps, fans, and heating elements can create additional surges or large energy demands.

For output, use:

Required continuous output = refrigerator running watts + simultaneous device watts

Choose a station whose continuous AC rating is at least that total, with practical headroom. Separately verify that its surge rating covers the refrigerator’s startup while the other devices remain connected. Do not add every appliance in the house if you will not operate them at the same time; do include anything that might start automatically, such as a pump or freezer.

Step 4: calculate the stored energy for the outage

Basic energy calculation

Estimate the refrigerator’s energy first, then add the energy used by other devices:

Required energy (Wh) ≈ refrigerator daily Wh × outage days + other devices’ Wh

For each other device:

Device Wh = device watts × hours used

If a device cycles, use its measured or manufacturer-stated average rather than its maximum instantaneous wattage. Sum the devices for the same outage period. Then add an allowance for inverter conversion losses, battery reserve, temperature effects, and uncertainty in refrigerator cycling. The station’s rated Wh is stored battery energy; it is not a promise that the same number of AC watt-hours will reach your plugs.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose, purely as an example, that a measured refrigerator uses 900 Wh per day. You also plan to use 60 Wh per day for networking equipment and 120 Wh per day for lights and charging. For a two-day outage:

  1. Refrigerator: 900 Wh × 2 = 1,800 Wh.
  2. Other devices: (60 + 120) Wh × 2 = 360 Wh.
  3. Estimated load energy: 1,800 + 360 = 2,160 Wh.
  4. Add a practical allowance for conversion losses and uncertainty before selecting the station’s rated capacity.

The 900 Wh and 60/120 Wh figures in this example are hypothetical inputs, not a typical refrigerator specification. Substitute your own measured or model-specific values.

Why a runtime promise is inherently approximate

Runtime changes when the room is hotter, doors are opened more often, food load changes, the refrigerator enters defrost, or the battery and inverter operate at different temperatures. AC conversion efficiency also varies with load. Use the station display or a suitable energy meter during an actual test to refine your estimate, and maintain enough reserve to avoid an abrupt shutdown.

How to choose the station’s specification set

Once you know your load and duration, compare stations on the same axes. A useful comparison records:

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Usable or rated capacity What Wh figure is published, and is it stated as battery capacity or usable AC energy? Does the manufacturer document a reserve or minimum state of charge?
Continuous AC output Is the rating high enough for every device that may run together, with headroom?
Surge output How many watts can it supply, for how long, and under what conditions? Does the specification describe motor or compressor loads?
Recharge input What AC, vehicle, and solar input limits apply? How long does a recharge take at each input?
Ports and simultaneous use Are there enough AC, USB, or DC ports for your planned devices, and can they operate together?
Battery chemistry and warranty What chemistry, cycle-life conditions, warranty period, and service process does the manufacturer state?
Size and weight Can you safely move and position the station where it will be used?

Compare figures from current manufacturer documentation for the exact model and regional version. A large capacity number alone does not prove that a station will start your refrigerator or provide the runtime you need.

Manufacturer example: how to read a specification sheet

EcoFlow’s U.S. DELTA 2 pages provide a useful illustration of the comparison method, not a recommendation for every refrigerator. The manufacturer page describes 1 kWh of storage and 1,800 W output. Its store specification lists 1,024 Wh capacity, 1,800 W total AC output, 2,700 W surge, and up to 500 W solar input. A separate product-page illustration lists a refrigerator at 120 W and estimates 7–14 hours of runtime.

Plan for a long outage and possible recharging

Solar can extend runtime, but only within the input limits

Solar charging can add energy during a prolonged outage, but it is not an automatic extension of the battery. The station must accept the panel’s voltage, current, connector, and maximum power. Weather, panel orientation, shade, season, and temperature determine how much energy is actually produced.

Check the exact station manual for its minimum and maximum solar-voltage range, maximum input current and wattage, permissible series or parallel connections, and charging behavior while AC loads are operating. Do not connect a panel merely because its advertised wattage is below the station’s maximum; electrical characteristics must also match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a recharge schedule

For a multi-day outage, estimate the refrigerator and essential-device energy needed between charging opportunities. Keep a reserve for cloudy periods and avoid planning on the panel’s nameplate wattage as if it were delivered continuously. If the station supports vehicle charging, confirm the vehicle outlet’s limits and charging time as specified by both manufacturers.

Safe setup during an outage

  1. Before an outage, identify the refrigerator’s dedicated plug, model number, measured energy use, and any documented startup requirement.
  2. Fully charge the station and test the refrigerator with the intended cable and outlet while observing the station’s input and output display.
  3. Connect only the appliances listed in your load plan. Turn off optional loads before the refrigerator is expected to restart.
  4. Place the station as directed by its manufacturer, keep ventilation openings clear, and protect it from moisture and excessive heat.
  5. Monitor output watts, state of charge, fault messages, and temperature. Investigate repeated overload or shutdown warnings instead of repeatedly resetting the unit.
  6. Never backfeed a home through a wall outlet. If you want selected household circuits powered, use equipment and a transfer arrangement installed according to local requirements by a qualified electrician.

This article does not replace the selected station’s electrical, fire, or indoor-use instructions. Follow those instructions exactly and obtain professional advice for any connection to household wiring.

Troubleshooting common sizing failures

The station shuts down when the refrigerator starts

  • Check whether the station’s continuous output, not only its surge figure, is below the simultaneous running load.
  • Disconnect optional devices and retry. If the refrigerator still fails to start, its compressor demand may exceed the station’s surge capability.
  • Confirm that the surge rating applies for a sufficient duration and that the station is not already hot, nearly empty, or in a reduced-power mode.
  • Obtain a documented or measured startup value and compare it with the station specification rather than multiplying the running wattage by a generic factor.

The refrigerator runs, but the battery empties sooner than expected

  • Check cumulative Wh, not only the instantaneous watt display.
  • Compare actual daily use with the refrigerator’s model estimate; high room temperature, frequent door openings, and defrost operation can raise consumption.
  • Include chargers, lights, networking equipment, and any device left connected continuously.
  • Allow for AC conversion losses and reserve; rated battery Wh will not all appear as usable AC energy.

The station reports an overload even though the arithmetic looks safe

  • Look for a second motor, pump, heater, or compressor starting at the same time.
  • Check whether the station’s published output applies to all AC outlets together or to a special operating mode.
  • Verify cable condition, outlet selection, and any low-temperature or low-battery output limits in the manual.

Solar charging is weak or unavailable

  • Recheck panel voltage and current against the station’s allowed range.
  • Inspect connectors and shading, and account for low sun angle or cloud cover.
  • Confirm whether the station reduces solar input while powering AC loads or when its battery is near full.

A practical decision checklist

  • Record the refrigerator model and obtain a model-specific daily kWh estimate or a multi-day meter reading.
  • Find a documented or measured compressor startup demand.
  • List essential devices, their watts, and their expected hours of use.
  • Add simultaneous running watts and compare with continuous AC output.
  • Compare startup demand with surge output and stated surge duration.
  • Calculate total Wh for the intended outage and add allowance for losses and uncertainty.
  • Check recharge options, solar electrical limits, ports, warranty, battery chemistry, and portability.
  • Test the complete setup before an outage and follow the manufacturer’s placement and electrical instructions.
