Zoom does not specify a required physical green-screen size for an individual caller. Choose a screen large enough to cover the full background visible in your camera frame, with extra coverage for ordinary movement. A close seated webcam shot needs less area than a wide torso or full-body view.
Measure the background your camera sees
Size the screen to the shot, not just to the room. Put your camera where you will use it, sit or stand in your usual position, and check the preview. Note the background edges visible at the left, right, top, and bottom of the frame. Include the space you may reveal when you gesture or shift position.
- Set the camera at its intended call position and choose your usual framing.
- Identify the full area of background visible behind you, including room for expected movement.
- Compare that area with the screen’s usable surface; a frame or border may make usable coverage smaller than the product’s overall dimensions.
- If the screen does not cover the frame, tighten the shot, move the camera closer, or choose a wider or taller screen.
- Enable the virtual background in Zoom and test the result before the call.
This is a practical measuring method, not a dimension rule published by Zoom. Its guidance requires a suitable solid-color background but does not set a minimum width or height for a personal Zoom call. Zoom’s virtual-background instructions and its Zoom Rooms guidance address background requirements, not a universal physical screen size.
Match the screen format to your framing

These are format categories, not tested size specifications. Zoom says a solid-colored screen, curtain, or wall can serve as a background. A portable webcam-oriented chroma-key panel is one example of a compact format; the Elgato Green Screen product page describes that category.

Choose a distinct color and light it evenly
Zoom recommends a bright, distinct green or blue background and uniform lighting. It also advises against clothing that matches the virtual-background color. A solid surface with minimal shadows gives the camera a clearer separation between you and the background. Zoom’s setup guidance also notes that using a green screen can improve edge definition and use fewer system resources than virtual backgrounds without one.
Lighting and placement can matter more than buying a larger screen. If the color varies across the surface or shadows fall behind you, first adjust the screen and lighting. In separate chroma-key switcher guidance, Roland recommends an evenly lit, unwrinkled screen and avoiding shadows and green spill. Roland’s chroma-key setup tips give about 5–10 feet as a safe subject distance for head-and-torso shots in that switcher context. That is not a Zoom requirement, and a full-body setup needs more room and additional lighting.

Test and fix common keying problems
Turn on the virtual background and inspect the preview before joining a call. Look for uncovered edges, shadows, uneven color, and clothing or objects that blend into the screen.
- Background edges appear: Recheck the frame’s boundaries and expand the screen coverage, tighten the framing, or move the camera closer.
- Parts of you disappear: Check for clothing or objects close in color to the screen. Zoom lets you manually select the color to replace when automatic selection is inaccurate.
- The outline looks uneven: Improve uniform lighting and reduce shadows before assuming a larger screen will solve the issue.
- The screen wrinkles or shifts: Smooth and secure it so the camera sees a more consistent surface.
A green screen does not guarantee a perfect result: framing, lighting, shadows, color contrast, and feature compatibility all affect the key.

What to compare when choosing a screen
Compare the usable coverage against your camera frame first. Then consider portability and setup time, whether you can light the surface evenly, and whether your room has enough space to position the subject. If the problem is uneven color or shadows rather than uncovered background, address the lighting and placement instead of assuming a bigger screen is the fix.
