The right generator size is the largest electrical load you expect to run at the same time, plus the starting surge of the biggest motor that may start while those loads are already operating. Build the estimate from your appliances’ nameplates and manuals—not from home square footage or a generic wattage chart. Separate continuous running watts from short startup watts, decide which loads can be scheduled, then compare the result with a generator’s continuous and surge ratings. Hard-wired circuits, pumps, heating equipment and an exact installation require a qualified electrical load assessment.

What generator wattage do you need?

There is no single generator size that fits every home. A small set of essential loads may fit a portable unit, while a home that includes central air conditioning, an electric range, a large well pump or whole-panel backup may require substantially more capacity. The decisive variables are the appliances you select, their actual running and starting demands, and which ones operate concurrently.

Use this sequence:

  1. List essential appliances and circuits by priority.
  2. Record each item’s running watts, starting or surge watts, voltage and connection type from its nameplate or manufacturer documentation.
  3. Add the running watts for loads that must operate together.
  4. Identify the largest motor-starting surge that can occur while those loads are running.
  5. Check that the generator’s rated continuous output handles the concurrent running load and that its surge rating handles the start event.
  6. Confirm outlets, voltage, fuel, runtime expectations and the legal connection method for your home.

Published charts are useful for an initial estimate only. A refrigerator, pump or furnace fan can have very different electrical characteristics from another model with the same appliance type.

Running watts versus starting watts

Running (continuous) watts

Running watts are the power an appliance consumes while operating normally. The sum of running watts for appliances that are on at the same time must stay within the generator’s continuous, rated or running output. Use the rating printed on the appliance whenever possible.

Starting (surge) watts

Motors briefly draw more power when they start. Refrigerators, freezers, furnace blowers, sump pumps, well pumps, air conditioners and some tools can create a surge that is several times their running demand. A generator can appear large enough based on its continuous rating yet stall or trip when a motor starts if its surge capability is insufficient.

Do not add every appliance’s maximum starting figure as though all motors begin at the same instant. Instead, determine which motor is most likely to start while the other selected loads are already running. If you can turn off or delay a load during startup, include that operating plan in the calculation.

Build an essential-load list

Start with the consequences of an outage rather than with a wattage target. A practical priority list often includes the following, but every household’s definition of “essential” is different:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Life-safety and medical equipment: devices whose interruption creates a health risk. Follow the equipment maker’s electrical requirements and arrange professional advice where reliability is critical.
  • Refrigeration: a refrigerator or freezer to protect food and medication.
  • Heating controls and blower: a gas- or oil-fired furnace may still need electricity for controls and its fan.
  • Water and drainage: a well pump, pressure system or sump pump where loss of water or flooding is unacceptable.
  • Lighting and communications: selected lights, internet equipment, phone charging and a television or radio.
  • Other chosen devices: a microwave, cooking appliance, computer or garage-door opener, provided the generator and connection support them.

Write down which items must run together and which can be used one at a time. This operating schedule can reduce the required generator size without removing an appliance from the emergency plan.

Read the nameplate and document every load

For each appliance, capture four details:

  • Running watts: the normal operating demand.
  • Starting or surge watts: the short demand when a motor or compressor starts.
  • Voltage: such as 120 or 240 volts; the generator must provide compatible voltage and circuit arrangements.
  • Connection: a plug-in appliance, or a hard-wired circuit such as a furnace, well pump or panel circuit.

Manufacturers may list amps rather than watts. Although watts can be related to voltage and current, power factor, motor characteristics and circuit details matter; have a qualified person convert and evaluate an amp-only rating instead of guessing. Photographing each nameplate and recording the model number helps resolve unclear figures in the manual.

Calculate concurrent running load and the largest start

Step 1: Add loads that operate together

Suppose your planned group is a refrigerator, furnace fan, five lights, television and microwave. Enter the actual nameplate values for your equipment and add their running watts. The result is the continuous load the generator must supply while all those items are on.

Step 2: Add the relevant motor surge to that operating condition

For each motor, ask whether it could start while the concurrent loads are operating. Compare the generator’s surge output with the existing running load plus that motor’s starting demand. If a pump is started manually after switching off the microwave, use that schedule rather than assuming both start together.

Step 3: Check the generator ratings

Use the generator’s rated continuous output for the running total and its separate surge or starting rating for the start event. Do not treat a marketing “maximum watts” number as continuous capacity unless the specification explicitly says so. The generator must also provide the required voltage, receptacles and circuit configuration.

Worked example: why scheduling changes the size

Honda’s sizing example lists a refrigerator, furnace fan, five lights, a television and a microwave at 2,900 W of running demand and 5,300 W of total starting demand. Honda says a 3,000 W generator can run that example when the loads are managed according to the described schedule. The example is a manufacturer illustration, not a guarantee for your appliances; the result depends on each model’s actual ratings and on preventing conflicting startup events. See the example and schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lesson is not that every 3,000 W generator handles every five-load household. It is that a generator can be sized around the running load when high-start devices are started in sequence and the unit’s surge capability is adequate for the planned event.

Choose what can run at the same time

Create a simple operating schedule before choosing a model:

  • Keep refrigeration and medically necessary equipment on the priority tier.
  • Start a pump or furnace blower with discretionary loads switched off when possible.
  • Run a microwave, kettle, toaster or other high-draw cooking device one at a time.
  • Delay nonessential charging, tools and entertainment equipment during a motor start.
  • After a motor reaches normal speed, restore the loads that fit within the continuous rating.

Scheduling is useful only when people can follow it and the generator’s controls or transfer equipment support the arrangement. If an automatic system may start multiple motors without intervention, size for that actual sequence or have a professional design load management.

Compare generators using the numbers that matter

Connect household circuits safely

Plug-in appliances

A portable generator can supply approved outdoor-rated extension cords and appliances when the cords, outlets, grounding arrangement and load stay within the equipment instructions. Keep the generator outside and operate it only as directed.

Hard-wired circuits

A furnace, well pump, sump pump or selected lighting circuits may be connected through equipment designed for household backup. Honda describes a transfer switch as a device that isolates generator power to selected circuits, including hard-wired loads. Its brochure states: “A transfer switch completely isolates the generator’s power to selected circuits.” Honda brochure.

Use a qualified electrician to select and install the transfer equipment, inlet, breakers and grounding or bonding arrangement required by your jurisdiction. The correct setup depends on the service panel, generator, circuit voltage and local electrical code. Never energize home wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet; that can backfeed utility lines and create a lethal hazard for workers and occupants.

Carbon-monoxide and operating safety

Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can kill. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says: “Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or shed, or near a window or exterior vent.” CPSC safety guidance.

  • Run a portable generator outdoors, well away from the house, doors, windows and vents; follow the generator manual for minimum clearances.
  • Never use a garage, porch, shed, basement or other enclosed or partially enclosed location, even with doors open.
  • Keep exhaust directed away from openings and install carbon-monoxide alarms as required by local guidance.
  • Refuel only after the engine is off and cool, using the fuel specified by the manufacturer.
  • Keep the unit dry and use only weather protection that the manufacturer permits without restricting ventilation.
  • Let the generator cool before storage and perform the stated maintenance so it will start when needed.

When a professional load assessment is the right choice

Arrange a site-specific assessment when any of these conditions apply:

  • You want to back up hard-wired circuits or an entire service panel.
  • The home has a well pump, central heating or cooling, electric resistance heat, or other large motors.
  • Several motors may start automatically at the same time.
  • Someone relies on electrically powered medical equipment.
  • You need a permanently installed standby generator or an automatic transfer system.
  • Nameplates are missing, ratings conflict, or the service voltage and panel configuration are unclear.

An electrician or generator professional can measure or calculate the panel’s actual load, account for motor-start characteristics, choose code-compliant transfer equipment and verify the installation. An online calculator is useful for pre-planning, not as an installation design.

Ignoring motor startup

A running-watts total can look modest while a pump or compressor trips the generator. Record surge values and test the planned startup sequence against the generator’s published surge rating.

Treating chart values as guarantees

Charts provide orientation, not a specification for your model. Replace every estimate with the appliance nameplate or manual before final selection.

Confusing maximum and continuous ratings

Use the explicitly stated rated or continuous output for the ongoing load. Check the separate surge rating for starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting voltage and connection limits

A generator with enough watts may still lack the required 240-volt output, receptacle, breaker capacity or approved transfer equipment. Verify the complete electrical path.

Leaving installation until after purchase

Panel access, inlet location, transfer-switch compatibility and local inspection requirements can change which generator is suitable. Plan the connection before buying equipment for hard-wired backup.

A printable sizing worksheet

Record one row per appliance and complete the calculation with the equipment manuals in hand:

Appliance or circuit Priority Running watts Starting watts Voltage Hard-wired? Runs concurrently?
Example: refrigerator Essential From nameplate/manual From nameplate/manual From nameplate Yes/No Yes/No
Example: furnace fan Essential in cold weather From nameplate/manual From nameplate/manual From nameplate Yes/No Yes/No
Additional load Required/useful/optional Actual value Actual value Actual value Yes/No Yes/No

Sum only the rows marked “runs concurrently” for the continuous requirement. Then evaluate each plausible startup event: concurrent running watts plus the starting demand of the motor that starts at that moment. Use the highest resulting event when comparing generator ratings.

Final decision checklist

  • Have you identified the appliances and circuits that are genuinely essential?
  • Did you use actual nameplate or manufacturer values wherever available?
  • Are running and starting watts recorded separately?
  • Did you define which loads operate together and which are scheduled?
  • Does the generator’s continuous rating cover the concurrent running load?
  • Does its surge rating cover the largest planned start with other loads operating?
  • Do voltage, outlets, fuel and runtime match the outage plan?
  • Is the household connection approved for the selected circuits and local code?
  • Will the generator operate outdoors, away from openings, with carbon-monoxide protection?
  • Has a qualified professional reviewed any hard-wired, automatic or medically critical installation?

A generator is correctly sized when its ratings, connection equipment and operating plan all match the specific essential loads—not merely when its advertised watt number looks large enough.
