There is no fixed desk depth required simply because you use two monitors. Choose a desk that lets you keep the screens at a comfortable viewing distance while leaving room for the keyboard, mouse, and forearms. The key measurement is from your eyes to the front of the screens—not from the desk edge to the monitors.
Desk depth and viewing distance are different measurements
A deeper desk can make it easier to position screens farther away, but the desk’s depth alone does not determine whether the setup fits. Your seated position, monitor bases, keyboard and mouse, and available forearm support all use the same surface.
Ergonomic guidance gives useful reference points, but not one universal minimum for every two-monitor desk:

These are separate workplace recommendations, not a consensus minimum for a two-monitor setup. OSHA’s guidance states: “Generally, the preferred viewing distance is between 20 and 40 inches (50 and 100 cm) from the eye to the front surface of the computer screen.” The accessed OSHA page does not state a publication year.

Arrange the pair around how you use it
If you use both screens about equally
Set the displays side by side and place the point where they meet directly in front of you. Center the keyboard on that midpoint as well. The University of Bergen’s guidance says the midpoint should be directly in front; UC Davis likewise advises placing both monitors together with the keyboard centered. If needed, angle the screens slightly toward you so you can see them without turning your head as far.
If one screen is primary
Put the primary display directly in front of you and center the keyboard on it. Place the secondary display to the side. UC Davis recommends this arrangement for a main monitor and a secondary screen; Humanscale gives similar alignment advice. Keep the screens in front rather than pushing either one far off to the side: OSHA advises that monitors be directly in front and no farther than 35 degrees to the left or right.

For either arrangement, position the top of each screen at or slightly below eye level. Your eyewear can affect what height feels comfortable. Adjust the setup so you can read the screens comfortably while sitting upright with your back supported, as OSHA recommends.

First check whether the stands are taking up space that could be used for the keyboard or mouse. Then choose a remedy based on what is actually limiting your setup.

OSHA lists pulling the desk away from the wall, using a less-deep flat-panel display, positioning a monitor in a corner, and using an adjustable keyboard tray among possible ways to improve monitor positioning. Humanscale describes depth as a person-dependent, adjustable position and suggests starting around arm’s length. Treat a monitor arm as a way to reclaim stand footprint and adjust placement, not as a substitute for checking your actual eye-to-screen distance.

- Sit as you normally work. Use your usual chair position and back support so you measure from your real seated posture.
- Set the screens where you can read them comfortably. Measure from your eyes to the front surfaces, using the cited viewing-distance guidance as a reference rather than a rigid rule.
- Choose the alignment. Center the meeting point of the screens and keyboard if both displays are equally important; center the primary screen and keyboard if one is used most.
- Check the working area. Make sure the keyboard, mouse, and forearms have usable space without forcing you to pull the screens too close.
- Check the physical fit. Account for each stand’s footprint and any wall clearance. Before choosing a monitor mount, verify its compatibility with your monitors and desk.
Individual vision, screen size, stand design, seating position, and work habits can change what works. The cited sources offer ergonomic guidance; they do not establish an exact desk depth that suits every pair of monitors.
