Size a co-located solar battery by optimizing two separate ratings—maximum charge/discharge power in megawatts (MW) and usable stored energy in megawatt-hours (MWh)—against the solar production profile, interconnection export limit, coupling architecture, dispatch rules, efficiency, degradation and project economics. A four-hour battery is a useful benchmark, not a universal answer. The defensible size is the one that a time-series model shows can physically operate and deliver enough lifetime value under the project’s actual contracts and market rules.
What “battery size” means in a co-located plant
A utility-scale battery has at least two principal design variables:
- Power (MW): the maximum rate at which the battery can charge or discharge. In a plant, this rating interacts with battery converters, transformers, inverters and the point of interconnection.
- Usable energy (MWh): the energy available between the permitted upper and lower state-of-charge limits. It is not necessarily the same as the cell or container nameplate energy.
- Duration: usable energy divided by usable power under the stated operating limits. A four-hour system can deliver its stated usable MW for four hours if it starts full and operates at that limit; changing either rating changes the duration.
The relationship can be written as duration (hours) = usable energy (MWh) ÷ usable power (MW). Choose MW and MWh independently in the optimization rather than assuming that a familiar duration automatically fits the project.

- the interconnection limit and any separate export limits for solar, battery discharge or combined output;
- PV DC nameplate, inverter AC rating, expected hourly or sub-hourly production and the PV DC/AC ratio;
- whether the battery may charge from PV only, from the grid, or from both sources;
- metering locations and whether charging and discharging are treated differently under the interconnection agreement;
- energy-market revenues, capacity payments, ancillary services, contracted delivery obligations and required availability windows;
- permitted state-of-charge range, charge and discharge limits, minimum run times, ramp limits and emergency operating requirements;
- round-trip efficiency, auxiliary consumption, degradation, augmentation or replacement assumptions, warranty limits and end-of-life usable capacity;
- installed capital cost, fixed and variable operating cost, financing assumptions, project life and discount rate.
A battery that looks profitable when it can charge whenever prices are low may be unable to perform that way if the interconnection agreement permits only solar charging. Likewise, a battery capable of discharging at its converter rating may not be able to export that power when solar output is already using the shared interconnection capacity.
Define the service before selecting MW or MWh
Different objectives produce different economically defensible sizes. State the primary service and any secondary services explicitly:
Solar-shifting and evening delivery
The battery stores midday PV and delivers later when the project’s contract or market values energy more highly. The useful energy rating is driven by the amount and timing of surplus PV, the required delivery window and losses between charging and discharge.

When PV DC production exceeds the PV inverter’s AC capability, a DC-coupled battery can capture some energy that would otherwise be curtailed. The needed battery MW and MWh depend on the duration and frequency of those clipping periods, not on the PV array nameplate alone.
Capacity or firm-output obligation
A capacity commitment may require a specified MW for a defined number of hours during a constrained period. Size usable MWh for the obligation after accounting for the required state-of-charge reserve, efficiency, degradation and the possibility that the battery must provide other services at the same time.
Ancillary services and grid support
Fast-response services may require substantial converter MW but relatively little energy. They can therefore favor a high-power, shorter-duration design, provided the market rules allow simultaneous participation and the battery can maintain the required state of charge.

Energy arbitrage
Arbitrage value depends on the full price or dispatch distribution, not simply the daily peak-to-off-peak spread. Include charge limits, discharge limits, efficiency, degradation cost and the opportunity cost of reserving energy for other services.

Create a candidate matrix rather than optimizing a single architecture. Vary usable battery MW and MWh separately, then test the electrical arrangements that can deliver those ratings.
| Configuration choice | What to vary or document | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Battery power | Usable charge and discharge MW | Sets how quickly surplus PV can be absorbed and how much output can be delivered during a constrained interval. |
| Usable energy | MWh and resulting duration | Sets how long the battery can sustain a dispatch obligation or shift solar energy. |
| PV sizing | PV MWdc and inverter MWac, including DC/AC ratio | Changes surplus production, clipping frequency and the amount of energy available to charge the battery. |
| Inverter arrangement | Shared inverter versus separate PV and battery inverters | Changes combined export capability, conversion paths, controls and equipment cost. |
| Coupling | AC-coupled or DC-coupled | Changes whether clipped DC energy can be captured, how many conversion steps are used and how the plant is controlled. |
| Charging source | PV-only, grid charging, or both where permitted | Changes dispatch opportunities, losses, metering treatment and market compliance. |
AC coupling versus DC coupling
Coupling is not a cosmetic equipment choice; it changes the energy flows that the sizing model must represent.
| Dimension | AC-coupled arrangement | DC-coupled arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical path | PV and battery generally use separate inverters on the AC side before reaching the grid connection. | PV and battery share a DC-side arrangement, commonly including a shared inverter and a DC-to-DC converter or equivalent controls. |
| Clipping capture | Does not inherently recover PV DC output that is already above the PV inverter’s AC limit. | Can capture some PV energy that would otherwise be clipped before the shared inverter. |
| Conversion and controls | Uses a different set of conversion steps and control interfaces, with separate inverter equipment. | Can reduce conversion steps for PV charging behind the inverter, while adding DC-side integration and control complexity. |
| Cost and layout | Separate inverters can simplify certain layouts but add their own equipment and conversion path. | May reduce some equipment or conversion costs, but requires coordinated DC equipment, protection and controls. |
| Export constraint | Battery and PV outputs must still respect the interconnection and any shared AC export limit. | A shared inverter can constrain the combined PV and battery output even when the battery has a larger DC rating. |
The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ 2025 utility-scale PV-plus-battery assumptions describe shared-inverter and DC-to-DC-converter/control trade-offs and caution that the future dominant architecture and component sizing remain uncertain. The 2024 ATB energy-flow discussion explains direct PV-to-grid flow, PV-to-battery charging, battery-to-grid discharge and grid charging, including how DC coupling can capture otherwise clipped energy.
Clipping recovery should not be treated as guaranteed revenue. The 2024 ATB says the clipping-capture potential for its representative system is small across most of the contiguous United States; increasing the PV inverter loading ratio can increase potential, but actual results depend on location and design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a time-series dispatch model, not an annual energy shortcut
Annual PV energy cannot reveal the short intervals that determine battery power, clipping capture or export congestion. Use hourly or finer-resolution solar production and prices or dispatch signals for every candidate design.

- Calculate lifetime economics. Include installed cost, fixed and variable operating cost, efficiency losses, degradation, augmentation or replacement, market revenue, contract penalties and financing assumptions.
- Compare candidates. Rank designs by lifetime value, deliverable MW, usable energy delivered, curtailed energy recovered, risk and compliance—not by nameplate duration alone.
NREL’s open-source configuration and dispatch model compares AC- and DC-coupled plants using costs, inverter performance, dispatch flexibility, forecast energy prices and clipped energy. Its demonstrated test case reported approximately a 2% increase in internal rate of return or benefit/cost ratio for the DC-coupled case. That result belongs to that test case and should not be used as a general premium for every project.
Account for efficiency and usable energy correctly
Model charging and discharging losses on the path the energy actually takes. A 2021 NREL reference scenario assumed 85% round-trip efficiency for grid charging and 87% for PV charging behind the inverter. These are scenario assumptions, not guaranteed specifications for a selected battery or a current project; use the warranted efficiency and auxiliary-load data for procurement.
If a dispatch obligation requires a specified AC delivery, work backward through discharge efficiency and the allowed state-of-charge window to determine the required stored energy. Then test whether the battery can reach that state of charge from the permitted source during the available charging period. A nominal MWh figure that ignores reserve energy, losses or degradation overstates deliverable energy.
Use the four-hour benchmark only as a reference point
The 2025 ATB presents a representative utility-scale DC-coupled configuration with the following ratings:
| Component | Representative rating | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| PV array | 132 MWdc | Benchmark solar DC nameplate used for technology and cost analysis. |
| Battery nameplate | 78 MWdc | Battery-side DC nameplate in the representative configuration. |
| Usable battery power | 60 MWdc | Usable power after the stated operating assumptions, not a universal project requirement. |
| Duration | Four hours | Reference duration associated with the usable-power assumption. |
| Shared inverter | 100 MWac | Shared conversion limit that constrains combined plant output. |
These figures are an illustrative benchmark for cost and technology analysis, not a recommendation to build a 60 MW or four-hour battery. A site with little clipping, a short capacity obligation or severe export congestion may favor a different MW/MWh combination; a site with a long evening delivery requirement may need more usable energy.
Check interconnection and contractual deliverability
After the dispatch optimization, replay the proposed schedule through the actual interconnection rules. Confirm:

- the maximum export at the point of interconnection for every combination of PV and battery output;

- market-registration rules, deliverability tests, minimum offer sizes and penalties for missed contracted output;
- warranty restrictions on cycling, operating temperature, state-of-charge and reserve operation.
Public modeling tools can compare configurations and dispatch, but they do not establish permission for a particular interconnection or market. Obtain written confirmation from the utility, transmission or distribution operator, market operator and contract counterparties before treating modeled revenue as deliverable.
Include co-location economics without assuming automatic savings
Co-location can create opportunities to share site preparation, land acquisition, installation labor, permitting, interconnection work and developer overhead. The U.S. Department of Energy describes these as potential shared-cost categories in its Solar-Plus-Storage 101 overview. They are not guaranteed savings: quantify the avoided cost, the additional controls and protection required, construction sequencing, outage risk and any upgrade triggered by the battery.
Compare designs on net present value or another stated lifetime metric after including:
- PV and battery equipment, inverters, transformers, DC-to-DC converters and balance of plant;
- interconnection studies, network upgrades, metering and protection changes;
- engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and integration labor;
- operations, maintenance, software, communications and auxiliary power;
- cell augmentation or replacement needed to preserve contracted capacity;
- energy losses, degradation and the cost of reserving state of charge for capacity or ancillary services;
- revenue uncertainty, curtailment, imbalance exposure and contract damages.
Stress-test the result before selecting a size
Do not publish one “optimal” size without showing which assumptions make it optimal. Re-run the candidate matrix with:
- low, central and high energy-price or dispatch-value cases;
- different PV DC/AC ratios and solar resource years;
- alternative export caps, charging permissions and curtailment rules;
- lower and higher round-trip efficiency, auxiliary consumption and degradation rates;
- delayed interconnection, equipment replacement or augmentation;
- different battery MW/MWh ratios, including shorter and longer durations;
- separate AC- and DC-coupled capital and operating costs;
- availability derates and outage periods during the contracted delivery window.
Report the range of value, the amount of energy and MW actually delivered, and the assumptions that cause a design to fail its obligation. A design that wins only under an optimistic price forecast or unrestricted charging rule is not robust.
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
Treating four hours as a rule
Problem: selecting four hours because it is common in benchmark studies. Fix: derive duration from the required delivery window, surplus-PV profile, reserve requirement and modeled value.

Using battery nameplate instead of usable energy
Problem: counting energy that is unavailable because of state-of-charge limits, reserve requirements, efficiency or degradation. Fix: state the usable-MWh basis and model end-of-life capability.
Ignoring the shared inverter
Problem: adding PV and battery MW as if both can export their full ratings simultaneously. Fix: enforce the shared inverter and point-of-interconnection limits at every time step.
Claiming all clipped PV is recoverable
Problem: assuming DC coupling captures every clipped megawatt-hour. Fix: model clipping intervals, converter and battery charge limits, state of charge and the local PV profile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A practical sizing worksheet
For each candidate, keep one auditable row with:
- PV MWdc, PV inverter MWac and DC/AC ratio;
- battery nameplate MW, usable charge MW, usable discharge MW and usable MWh;
- duration calculated from the stated usable ratings;
- AC- or DC-coupled topology, shared-inverter rating and export limit;
- allowed charging sources and all dispatch constraints;
- efficiency, auxiliary load, state-of-charge limits and degradation assumptions;
- annual and lifetime discharged MWh, clipped energy captured, curtailed energy and hours at the export cap;
- capital cost, operating cost, augmentation or replacement schedule and modeled revenues;
- contracted MW delivered during required windows and any failed intervals;
- value under each sensitivity case and the reason the candidate is selected or rejected.
The preferred design is the smallest—or otherwise most economical—combination of usable MW and MWh that meets the project’s obligations with acceptable risk across the scenarios you consider credible. “Smallest” should never mean lowest nameplate cost if it cannot deliver the contracted service.
Bottom line for project decisions
There is no universal battery size for a co-located solar project. Set MW from the required instantaneous service and electrical bottlenecks; set usable MWh from the duration and energy requirement; then let time-series dispatch, coupling topology, export limits, efficiency, degradation and lifetime economics determine the trade-off. Use the four-hour benchmark and published efficiency or value results as reference assumptions with clear attribution, not as promises about a particular site. Final sizing is complete only when the modeled schedule is physically deliverable, contractually permitted and resilient to realistic sensitivities.
