Size a data-center battery from the job it must perform, not from a universal kWh-per-kW rule. First decide whether you need a battery-backed UPS for conditioned, no-break power; a behind-the-meter (BTM) battery energy storage system for site energy management; longer critical-load backup; or power smoothing for rapidly changing AI loads. Then define the protected load and failure case, set instantaneous kW/kVA and duration targets, and use the selected UPS or BESS manufacturer’s discharge curves to account for efficiency, usable state-of-charge, temperature, aging, discharge rate, and recharge limits. The result is a project-specific power-and-energy design that must be validated against the one-line diagram, controls, safety requirements, and interconnection rules.

Start by separating UPS batteries from behind-the-meter BESS

“Battery storage” can describe two different electrical systems. A UPS places power-conversion equipment in series with the protected load and uses stored energy to maintain continuity when the normal input fails. A BTM BESS is generally connected in parallel at the facility level and is dispatched for peak shaving, demand response, renewable-energy shifting, power balancing, or longer-duration reserve. They can operate together, but a BTM battery does not automatically provide the conditioned, no-break output of a UPS.

Design question UPS battery system Behind-the-meter BESS
Primary role Conditioned no-break supply for critical loads during an interruption or generator transfer Site energy management, flexibility, peak shaving, grid services, renewable shifting, or longer-duration reserve
Typical architecture UPS in series with the protected load Parallel, site-level connection through power-conversion equipment and facility controls
Main sizing focus Critical-load kW/kVA, power conditioning, transfer or ride-through duration, and redundancy Discharge and charge power, usable energy, dispatch profile, interconnection, controls, and economics
Relationship Provides immediate protection and can bridge to generators May provide longer reserve or energy flexibility when coordinated with the UPS and generator system
Evidence on deployment UPS is the established data-center battery use case Uptime Institute’s June 2026 briefing describes uses beyond UPS and two- to four-hour renewable shifting as largely pilot- or early-stage applications

DOE describes a UPS as converters, switches, and energy-storage devices that maintain load power continuity when the input fails. Its purchasing guidance says to consider equipment type, capacity and quantity, required power conditioning, redundancy, and the length of uptime required during an outage. Those factors define a UPS battery design; they are not interchangeable with the dispatch requirements of a BTM BESS.

Why there is no universal data-center battery ratio or runtime

A screening relationship is useful: delivered energy in kilowatt-hours is approximately the critical load in kilowatts multiplied by the support duration in hours. It is not a final nameplate calculation. The installed battery must be larger or differently configured according to the selected system’s conversion efficiency, discharge-rate behavior, usable state-of-charge (SOC) window, temperature limits, end-of-life capacity, reserve policy, and charging restrictions.

Two facilities with the same peak IT load can therefore require different batteries. One may protect only servers until generators stabilize; another may keep cooling, networking, controls, and selected mechanical systems online for a longer outage. Their power paths, power factors, UPS efficiencies, redundancy arrangements, ambient temperatures, and future growth assumptions can all differ. No reviewed source establishes a universal autonomy target, derating percentage, or kWh-per-kW multiplier for every data center.

Step 1: define the duty before choosing a battery

Write a one-sentence duty statement and a measurable acceptance criterion. The duty determines whether you are primarily sizing a UPS, a BTM BESS, or a coordinated pair.

UPS ride-through and generator transfer

Specify the interruption or transfer interval the UPS must cover and the load that must remain continuously powered. Include the required power-conditioning mode and the failure that starts the battery discharge. The battery must deliver the required power for that interval while the UPS remains within its voltage, current, thermal, and SOC limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Longer critical-load backup

If the battery is expected to carry critical loads beyond generator stabilization, define the exact autonomy period, the loads that remain connected, and how the system will recharge afterward. A longer duration can change the architecture from a conventional UPS battery string to a coordinated UPS-and-BESS arrangement with separate converters, controls, and protection.

Peak shaving, demand response, and renewable shifting

For BTM operation, define the dispatch event, maximum import or export target, event duration, frequency of events, and recovery time between events. Include utility tariffs, demand-charge intervals, generator operating rules, and any limits imposed by the interconnection agreement. The battery must have enough usable energy for the dispatch window and enough charge power to be ready for the next event.

AI-load smoothing and power balancing

Fast GPU and AI workloads can create repeated power swings even when the daily energy total is modest. The design duty is not just “hours of backup”; it is a specified fluctuation amplitude, repetition frequency, duty cycle, smoothing percentage, and duration. The battery and converter must respond quickly enough and preserve an SOC reserve for later events.

Step 2: map the electrical boundary and measure the load

Draw the one-line path from the utility service through switchgear, alternate generation, UPS modules, power distribution units, cooling and auxiliary equipment, and the battery connection. DOE’s data-center guidance emphasizes considering both initial and future electrical loads, including part-load and low-load operation. Mark exactly where the battery connects and which loads it can support during each operating mode.

Inventory the protected loads

  • Record measured or defensible design kW and kVA for each IT load group.
  • Record power factor and identify nonlinear or highly transient loads.
  • Separate essential servers, storage, network equipment, controls, and monitoring from loads that can be shed.
  • Decide whether cooling pumps, fans, chillers, environmental controls, fire systems, and security systems remain powered.
  • Document startup currents, step changes, overload requirements, and any motor or transformer inrush that the converter must tolerate.
  • Model the expected growth schedule, not only today’s nameplate load.

Do not size from total facility demand if only a subset is protected, and do not size from average demand if the UPS or inverter must withstand a higher instantaneous load. Conversely, excluding cooling or controls without confirming the operating sequence can make the stated autonomy impossible to achieve in practice.

Step 3: set the instantaneous power target

Power capacity is the maximum kW and kVA the UPS or BESS converter must deliver or absorb at a specified moment. Energy capacity is the kWh available over the discharge period. Size both.

Calculate kW, kVA, and power factor

Use measured real power and apparent power where possible. If only one is known, power factor is needed to translate between them:

kW = kVA × power factor

The converter, switchgear, and conductors must satisfy their kVA and current limits even when the real-power requirement appears acceptable. Include transient or overload duty separately from the steady-state value. A modular UPS can help match capacity to partial-load operation and future growth, but the modules and battery strings still have to meet the defined failure case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for charging power

A BTM system that discharges during a peak or smoothing event must also have sufficient charging power to restore its SOC. Charger limits, utility import limits, generator capacity, and site controls can make recharge power a binding constraint even when the battery has ample nominal kWh.

DOE’s 2024 guide reports that double-conversion UPS efficiency reached 95% or higher in 2023. That figure is an efficiency context, not a universal value to insert into every battery equation: efficiency varies with loading, equipment design, operating mode, and conversion path.

Step 4: convert duration into installed energy

Begin with the screening calculation:

Screening delivered energy (kWh) ≈ critical load (kW) × required support (hours)

For example, a hypothetical 500 kW protected load for 15 minutes gives 500 × 0.25 = 125 kWh of delivered energy before any engineering allowances. This arithmetic only states the energy that must reach the load. It does not specify the battery’s DC nameplate, cabinet count, or runtime at end of life.

Apply the selected manufacturer’s curves and limits

Use the exact UPS or BESS model’s data for:

  • AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC efficiency at the intended load and operating mode.
  • Usable SOC or depth-of-discharge window, including any reserve that controls must protect.
  • Discharge-rate effects and the power-versus-energy relationship at the required duration.
  • Temperature derating and heating or cooling requirements.
  • End-of-life capacity and the warranty’s capacity-retention definition.
  • Converter, battery-management-system, and protection cutoffs.
  • Allowances for cabling, auxiliary loads, balancing, and engineering reserve.

The installed energy is therefore determined from the manufacturer’s discharge curves and project limits, not from a fixed percentage derating. Ask for curves at the actual power, temperature, SOC window, and end-of-life condition; a nominal battery rating at a different test rate may not deliver the required runtime.

Check recharge and repeated events

For a single outage, calculate the energy needed to return the battery to its required standby SOC. For BTM dispatch or AI smoothing, simulate repeated cycles and verify that charging restores at least the energy consumed before the next cycle. If it does not, SOC will drift downward and the promised smoothing or reserve will last only temporarily.

Step 5: size for the real redundancy and failure case

State the topology explicitly: N, N+1, 2N, or another arrangement. Then identify the actual single failure or maintenance condition the design must survive. Examples include loss of one UPS module, one battery string, one power path, one switchboard section, or one converter.

  1. Draw the normal and contingency one-line diagrams.
  2. Remove the specified failed module or path from the model.
  3. Place the remaining critical load on the surviving path or paths.
  4. Recalculate converter kW/kVA, battery current, runtime, and thermal limits for that state.
  5. Check maintenance states and planned growth, not only the normal operating state.
  6. Confirm that controls prevent an unavailable module or low-SOC string from being counted as capacity.

Do not apply a generic “redundancy percentage.” N+1 and 2N can produce very different battery counts and load sharing, and the correct result depends on the one-line design and the failure the owner has chosen to tolerate.

Step 6: model AI smoothing as a time-series problem

Average demand is insufficient for AI and GPU smoothing. Obtain measured or simulated time-series data and characterize:

  • Fluctuation amplitude, such as the percentage change from minimum to maximum load.
  • Repetition frequency and the duration of each high- and low-load interval.
  • Duty cycle and the number of cycles expected in succession.
  • The percentage of fluctuation the battery should smooth.
  • The minimum and maximum SOC limits and the reserve held for contingencies.
  • Required converter response time and allowable residual fluctuation.
  • Charge power available during the low-load portion of each cycle.

Vertiv’s 2025 technical paper illustrates why both power and energy matter. Its 1,200 kW simulation uses a workload varying from 30% to 100% at 0.5 Hz with a 50% duty cycle. In that specific scenario, seven lithium-ion cabinets provide limited smoothing duration, while 14 cabinets reach a neutral power balance for the same stated profile. Those cabinet counts are an illustrative simulation configuration, not a general sizing rule for another data center, battery model, or workload.

Vertiv also states that insufficient battery energy or recharge rate can make smoothing temporary and that battery stress may accelerate aging. Validate the control strategy with a time-domain simulation or commissioning test that includes SOC drift, converter limits, and the planned reserve.

Step 7: compare battery technologies against the duty

Technology selection follows the duty and site constraints. Compare each candidate on duration, response rate, available power and energy, lifecycle economics, safety, thermal behavior, maintainability, warranty, maturity, and supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Questions to answer
Duration Is the duty a seconds-to-minutes UPS event, a generator-bridge interval, a multi-hour dispatch, or repeated short cycles?
Response and power Can the converter follow the required step changes, overloads, and charge/discharge transitions?
Usable energy What energy remains inside the permitted SOC window at the required temperature, discharge rate, and end-of-life condition?
Lifecycle economics How do replacement intervals, cycling, efficiency losses, augmentation, and maintenance affect total cost?
Safety and thermal behavior What monitoring, spacing, ventilation, fire protection, and emergency procedures does the jurisdiction and equipment require?
Maturity and supply Are equipment, spare parts, qualified service, and warranty support available for the project’s region and life?

Uptime Institute’s June 2026 industry briefing reports that lithium-ion is the only widely deployed option at commercial scale in the data-center context it reviewed. It discusses sodium-ion, flow, and emerging long-duration chemistries as having distinct potential but also maturity, economics, manufacturing, or capacity constraints in some applications. This is a time-bound industry assessment, not a universal engineering rule; evaluate the technology against the project’s duty and procurement requirements.

Step 8: turn the calculation into a procurement specification

DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) provides a commercial-scale BESS procurement checklist dated July 8, 2024, and customizable lithium-ion BESS specifications dated August 12, 2025. Use those resources as starting points, then tailor them to the facility, jurisdiction, and operating model.

Require these technical deliverables

  • Manufacturer sizing software or discharge curves at the specified power, duration, temperature, SOC window, and end-of-life condition.
  • AC and DC one-line diagrams showing UPS modules, battery strings, converters, switchgear, protective devices, and bypass paths.
  • Guaranteed usable kW and kWh, not only nominal nameplate values.
  • Charge and discharge limits, response time, overload capability, ramp rates, and recharge time.
  • Battery-management-system alarms, SOC estimation method, communications, and control interfaces.
  • Efficiency curves and auxiliary consumption over the expected operating range.
  • Environmental limits, thermal management, enclosure ratings, safety certifications, and code documentation for the project jurisdiction.
  • Warranty capacity-retention terms, cycle or throughput limits, augmentation assumptions, and end-of-life replacement plan.
  • Maintenance, inspection, testing, monitoring, spare-parts, and emergency-response procedures.
  • Interconnection studies and approvals for a parallel BTM system, including export, protection, islanding, and utility-control requirements where applicable.

Verify UPS compatibility

Confirm that the battery voltage range, communication protocol, charger profile, fault behavior, and BMS interface are approved for the selected UPS. A battery cabinet is not automatically compatible merely because its chemistry and nominal voltage appear similar. Follow the UPS and battery manufacturers’ maintenance instructions; DOE specifically says UPS batteries and capacitors should be maintained according to manufacturer guidance.

Commission under realistic conditions

  1. Test normal operation, transfer, bypass, and generator interaction.
  2. Verify the measured critical load and power factor against the design model.
  3. Demonstrate the specified redundancy failure and maintenance states.
  4. Perform a runtime or capacity test within the manufacturer’s approved limits.
  5. Test low-SOC alarms, reserve logic, charger recovery, and repeated AI-smoothing cycles if applicable.
  6. Record temperatures, currents, voltages, SOC, event logs, and control responses for the operating baseline.

Generalizing a vendor example

Problem: A cabinet count or runtime from one model and workload may be mistaken for a site rule.
Correction: Treat published examples, including Vertiv’s 1,200 kW simulation, as scenario-specific and rerun the calculation with your own load trace and equipment data.

A practical sizing worksheet

Before requesting quotations, assemble one controlled worksheet with these fields:

  • Duty: UPS ride-through, longer backup, peak shaving, demand response, renewable shifting, power balancing, AI smoothing, or a combination.
  • Protected boundary: named IT, cooling, network, controls, and other loads, with inclusion and shedding rules.
  • Power: normal, peak, transient, overload, kW, kVA, and power factor.
  • Duration: required support time for each duty and the generator or grid event that ends it.
  • Topology: N, N+1, 2N, power paths, module count, and defined failure cases.
  • Energy model: manufacturer efficiency, SOC window, temperature, discharge rate, end-of-life capacity, reserve, and auxiliary loads.
  • Recharge: permitted charging power, target recovery time, utility or generator limits, and repeated-event behavior.
  • Environment and compliance: location, temperature range, fire and electrical codes, interconnection, noise, footprint, and access.
  • Lifecycle: warranty, maintenance, monitoring, augmentation, replacement, recycling, and decommissioning.

Have the integrator or engineer sign off each field against the one-line diagram and the manufacturer’s model. The final battery count, cabinet arrangement, converter rating, and control settings are engineering outputs that cannot be calculated responsibly without facility data.

Decision rule: what a defensible design looks like

A defensible data-center battery design can answer five questions without relying on a generic runtime claim:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. What exact load must remain powered, and what are its measured kW, kVA, power factor, transients, and growth?
  2. What duty and duration are required, and is the equipment a series UPS, a parallel BTM BESS, or a coordinated system?
  3. What power and usable energy are delivered at the specified SOC, temperature, discharge rate, redundancy state, and end of life?
  4. Can the system recharge and repeat the duty without violating reserve, thermal, or equipment limits?
  5. Have compatibility, safety, interconnection, maintenance, monitoring, warranty, and commissioning requirements been verified?

If any answer is missing, the design is still a preliminary estimate. Once those answers are documented, manufacturer curves and a failure-case model can produce a project-specific battery configuration instead of an unreliable kWh-per-kW shortcut.
