Size a small-data-center battery backup system in two separate passes. First, determine the protected load and choose UPS capacity that can carry it within both its watt and VA limits, with explicit growth and redundancy. Second, select a battery configuration that can deliver that load for the required autonomy using discharge data for the exact UPS and battery. A watt-hour estimate can orient an early discussion, but it cannot establish final runtime because discharge rate, conversion losses, battery model, cutoff voltage, temperature, aging and configuration all change the result.
The two sizing questions you must answer
A UPS and its batteries perform different jobs. The UPS must continuously support the connected electrical load and tolerate its power characteristics. The battery bank must supply the UPS for the planned outage response. Treating those as one calculation is the most common reason a design looks adequate on paper but runs out of capacity or overloads the UPS.
Pass one: size the UPS output
Establish the real power in watts and apparent power in volt-amperes (VA), then select an output rating that covers both. Include the capacity that remains usable under the chosen redundancy arrangement. A unit can be below its watt limit while exceeding its VA limit, or the reverse, so checking only one nameplate value is unsafe.
Pass two: size the battery system
Set an autonomy target from the site’s operating plan, then use manufacturer discharge tables for the selected UPS, battery model, string count, temperature and end-of-discharge voltage. The final answer is a supported configuration, not simply a number of amp-hours.

Define exactly what the UPS will protect
Inventory every critical device
List servers, storage arrays, network switches, firewalls, management appliances and any other equipment that must remain powered. Record each device’s measured operating load when possible, while retaining voltage, current, watt and power-factor information from the nameplate or manufacturer documentation for compatibility checks.
Separate IT loads from facility-support loads
Cooling, environmental controls, security systems, access control, fire detection interfaces and building-management equipment may be essential to continued operation, but they are not the same as the IT critical load. Decide whether each facility load belongs on the protected UPS bus. A design that protects servers but leaves required cooling or controls on an unprotected circuit may not meet the actual continuity objective.
Use measurements and assumptions deliberately
Capture operating load at normal, peak and planned expansion conditions. Do not substitute breaker ratings for consumption, and do not silently add every maximum nameplate value as though all devices reached it simultaneously. If measured data is unavailable, document the nameplate-based assumption, expected duty cycle and uncertainty so the engineer reviewing the design knows what must be validated.
Calculate watts and VA before choosing a UPS
Sum real power
Add the watts for all loads that will be connected to the UPS. Include facility-support equipment only if the operating plan requires it to remain energized. Separate continuous loads from devices with startup surges, such as compressors or large fans; the latter may require a UPS with an appropriate overload and bypass capability even when their steady-state watts appear acceptable.
Calculate apparent power
When equipment provides volts and amps but not VA, calculate VA = volts × amps and sum the results. When only watts and power factor are available, calculate VA = watts ÷ power factor. Use the equipment’s stated power factor rather than assuming unity. Modern servers often have active power-factor correction, but the actual value still belongs in the design record.
Apply growth and usable-capacity allowances
Eaton’s UPS sizing guidance recommends at least 15% more VA capacity than the protected requirement as a five-year growth allowance, while noting that a site’s actual growth plan may require more. This is vendor guidance, not a universal code margin. Document expected rack additions, storage expansion, new cooling loads and any derating caused by temperature, altitude, battery limits or redundancy.

Set autonomy from the outage response plan
Bridge to generator power
If a generator is installed, measure the complete sequence: outage detection, generator start, stabilization and automatic-transfer operation. The battery must cover the longest credible interval, not an optimistic average. Include time for a failed start or delayed transfer if the site’s risk assessment requires it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Support migration or an orderly shutdown
Virtual-machine migration, storage failover and controlled host shutdown have different durations. Time those procedures under realistic load and network conditions, then add a documented engineering margin. Eaton’s buying guidance notes that there is no universal formula for runtime; the required interval comes from what the site must do during an outage.
Use load shedding to protect the most important work
Place noncritical outlets, development systems, spare storage and convenience loads on separately switched segments where practical. A staged shutdown can preserve battery power for core networking, storage metadata and management systems. Define the order, trigger thresholds and person or automation responsible for each stage before relying on it.
There is no defensible universal rule such as “five minutes is enough.” A site without a generator may need only safe shutdown, or it may require sustained operation until utility service returns. The autonomy requirement must be stated in minutes or hours for a defined load set and response plan.
Size batteries from discharge data, not amp-hours alone
Understand the battery-side power requirement
During an outage, the battery supplies more power than the AC load receives because the UPS inverter and associated conversion stages are not lossless. At a planning level, battery-side power ≈ AC load ÷ inverter efficiency. ABB identifies battery power, power factor and inverter efficiency as primary inputs; Fuji Electric likewise directs designers to include inverter and converter losses.
Why nominal energy is only a sanity check
The relationship nominal energy = battery voltage × amp-hours assumes an ideal, fully usable battery. Real batteries deliver less capacity at high discharge rates, and the UPS stops drawing power at a specified low-voltage cutoff. Temperature, aging, depth of discharge, charging behavior and internal resistance further change the usable energy. Use a simple energy estimate only to detect an obviously impossible concept, never to approve a final string count.

Obtain the two manufacturer data sets
Request the UPS manufacturer’s supported battery models, nominal string voltage, maximum and minimum string counts, charger limits and runtime tables. Then obtain the battery manufacturer’s constant-power or discharge tables for the required end voltage and discharge duration. Match the table’s discharge rate to the calculated battery-side power and select enough strings to meet the autonomy at the design temperature and end-of-life capacity.
Carry end-of-life and environmental assumptions
Specify whether the design must meet autonomy with a new battery or at the end of its planned service life. Include the lowest expected room temperature, ventilation conditions and any high-temperature derating. A battery that meets a runtime target when new at 25°C may not meet it after years of service in a warmer room.
Verify runtime for the exact UPS configuration
Read every condition in a runtime table
Runtime tables are configuration-specific. Check UPS model, firmware or edition where stated, battery chemistry and model, number of parallel strings, load in watts or VA, power factor, test temperature and end voltage. A table that omits one of these conditions is not sufficient evidence for a procurement decision.

Example of why product data cannot be generalized
Eaton’s Power Xpert 9395P runtime document identifies a 10-year battery and reports results under stated conditions including 25°C and 1.67 volts per cell at end of discharge. Those results apply only to the 9395P configurations and battery arrangements shown in that document. They cannot be transferred to another UPS model, a different string count or a different battery.
Ask the supplier to provide a signed runtime calculation or configuration printout showing the load, power factor, temperature, cutoff voltage and end-of-life assumption. Keep that record with the single-line diagram and commissioning documentation.
Choose an architecture that survives growth and failure
Single-unit design
One UPS with external battery modules can be appropriate where the business can tolerate maintenance bypass or a single equipment failure. Confirm that the bypass path is properly rated and that maintenance can be performed without dropping the protected bus.

Modular or parallel design
Modular and parallel systems allow capacity to be added or a module to be isolated. They also introduce controls, synchronization, bypass and sharing requirements that must be validated as a complete system rather than by adding nameplate ratings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →N+1 capacity
In an N+1 arrangement, N units or modules carry the design load and one additional unit or module is reserved for failure. After removing any one unit from service, the remaining units must still support the full design load, including the planned growth allowance and any required overload margin. Installed kVA alone does not prove N+1 capability.
Manufacturer examples, not universal recommendations
Eaton positions its 93PX family at 15–20 kVA/kW for edge, high-density rack and small-to-medium data-center use and lists external battery modules as an option. The same manufacturer also offers 93PS, 93E G2 and 93PM G2 families with different capacities and configurations. These are examples for comparing supported architectures; suitability depends on the site’s phase, voltage, distribution and runtime requirements.
Compare battery chemistries on lifecycle fit
Valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA)
VRLA systems are familiar and commonly supported, but their service life is sensitive to temperature and operating conditions. Eaton’s edge guide gives a general vendor-reported range of three to five years for VRLA batteries. That is not a guarantee for a particular installation; replacement planning should use the selected battery’s warranty, test results and room conditions.
Lithium-ion
Lithium-ion batteries can reduce footprint and weight and may offer longer service intervals, but they typically have higher upfront cost and require compatible monitoring, charging controls and safety provisions. Eaton’s guide cites an average vendor-reported service life of eight years. Treat that as a general comparison, not a promised life or a complete total-cost calculation.

Battery distribution and charging
Check permissible string counts, battery disconnects, fusing, conductor lengths, voltage drop, cabinet clearances and charger capacity. Ensure the charger can restore the planned autonomy within the required time without exceeding source or battery limits.
Room conditions and structural constraints
Measure ambient temperature, humidity, ventilation, flood exposure, seismic or anchoring needs and floor loading. Battery cabinets may weigh far more than the UPS frame, and lithium-ion and VRLA installations can have different ventilation and fire-protection requirements.
Codes, maintenance and monitoring
Have qualified local electrical and safety professionals review applicable rules because requirements vary by jurisdiction and the facility location is not specified here. Define preventive maintenance, impedance or conductance testing where applicable, alarm routing, emergency procedures, replacement access and disposal. Include UPS and battery monitoring in the same operations plan as generator tests and failover drills.

Assume a hypothetical room has 12 kW of measured IT load and 4 kW of cooling and control equipment that must remain on the UPS. The protected real-power total is 16 kW. If the loads average a 0.90 power factor, the apparent-power requirement is approximately 17.8 kVA. Apply the documented growth allowance, then compare the resulting watts and VA with the UPS’s separate limits and with the capacity that remains after the planned redundancy failure.
Suppose the operating plan requires 12 minutes to detect an outage, start and transfer a generator, with a controlled shutdown sequence as a fallback. The battery calculation must use the battery-side power for the protected load, the selected UPS efficiency, the chosen temperature, the UPS cutoff voltage and the battery manufacturer’s end-of-life discharge table. The result might be one supported string count for one battery model and a different count for another; no final quantity can be inferred from the 16 kW figure alone.
If noncritical development servers can be shut down after two minutes, create a switched load segment and recalculate the remaining critical load for the later interval. Obtain a runtime report for both stages and test the shutdown automation during commissioning.
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
- Using only watts: calculate VA as well and check both UPS limits.
- Using breaker ratings as demand: measure operating load or document the nameplate assumption.
- Promising a generic runtime: derive autonomy from generator, migration and shutdown timing.
- Dividing watt-hours by load watts: use model-specific discharge curves that include losses and cutoff voltage.
- Ignoring aging: size to the required end-of-life capacity, not just new-battery data.
- Applying one model’s table to another: obtain data for the exact UPS, battery and string configuration.
- Counting redundant capacity twice: verify that the remaining units carry the full design load after one fails.
- Leaving cooling unprotected: decide explicitly whether facility-support loads belong on the UPS bus.
- Choosing chemistry by energy density alone: compare monitoring, maintenance, safety, space, weight, warranty and compatibility.
- Skipping local review: have qualified professionals confirm electrical, fire, structural and environmental requirements.
What a complete design package should contain
Before ordering equipment, assemble a load schedule with measured watts, VA, power factor and assumptions; a one-line diagram showing UPS, bypass, battery disconnects and distribution; an autonomy statement tied to generator and shutdown procedures; the manufacturer’s runtime calculation; battery end-of-life and temperature assumptions; an N+1 or single-unit availability decision; room, weight and clearance checks; monitoring and maintenance procedures; and a commissioning test plan.
