To simulate spin-ice phase transitions and string-like defects, represent every elongated nanomagnet as an Ising-like binary moment, define the exact lattice and interaction model, equilibrate many independent configurations with an appropriate update algorithm, and measure thermodynamic, structural, and defect observables across temperature or field. Static strings are obtained by connecting charged or ice-rule-violating vertices; dynamical strings are reconstructed as monopole trajectories between successive configurations. Monte Carlo is usually the right starting point for equilibrium phase diagrams, while kinetic methods and micromagnetics are needed when real-time reversal or island-scale fields and spectra matter.
What you are actually simulating
Artificial spin ice is a patterned array of coupled nanomagnets on a frustrated lattice. Common geometries include square, kagome, and Santa Fe ice, although the same workflow applies to other lattices. Each elongated island has a preferred magnetization axis, so a useful first model treats it as a binary variable pointing in one of two directions along that axis. The collective state is then determined by the lattice geometry, dipolar or geometry-specific interactions, temperature, applied field, disorder, boundaries, and the time protocol.
The interesting objects are not only individual spins. Ice-rule states can support ordered phases, disordered phases, monopole-like charged vertices, and chains of flipped moments commonly called Dirac strings. A phase transition may appear as a change in long-range order, susceptibility, response to a field, correlation length, or defect population. A string is a geometrical and topological object linking defects; it is not necessarily a literal material filament.
The review by Skjærvø, Marrows, Stamps, Heyderman and colleagues describes artificial spin ices as coupled-nanomagnet metamaterials with emergent magnetic monopoles, collective dynamics, and phase transitions. That framing matters computationally: the lattice is engineered, but the behavior you measure is collective and depends strongly on how faithfully you represent the geometry and dynamics.

Choose the model before writing the simulation
Specify the lattice and easy axes
Create coordinates for every island and store its easy-axis unit vector. Square and kagome arrays do not have the same vertex coordination or energetics, so a critical temperature, defect density, or string distribution from one geometry cannot be transferred to another without a parameter mapping. Santa Fe ice has its own interaction hierarchy and ground-state string classification; it should be treated as a separate model rather than as a decorated square lattice.
- Coordinates: record the center of each island and its orientation.
- Connectivity: define which islands meet at each vertex and which plaquettes are adjacent.
- Boundary conditions: choose open, periodic, or another explicit boundary treatment. Open edges create boundary charges and altered coordination.
- Moment size: assign the magnetic moment used by the Hamiltonian and retain the conversion between reduced and physical units.
- Disorder: include positional, length, width, coercive-field, or moment disorder if it is part of the experimental question.
Select an interaction treatment
The minimal Hamiltonian is an Ising model with pair interactions. For mesoscopic islands, a common approximation is the point-dipole interaction between moments. This is fast enough for large lattices and can reproduce ordering, Dirac strings, and phase transitions, but it sacrifices microscopic fidelity when island shape, separation, or near-field details are important. A geometry-specific interaction model can retain more of the real coupling hierarchy.
State explicitly whether you use nearest-neighbor interactions, a finite dipolar cutoff, or a long-range sum. For periodic systems, an Ewald treatment may be appropriate. The cutoff or summation method is part of the model, not merely an implementation detail: changing it can alter the relative energies of vertex types and therefore the apparent transition.
Keep a unit ledger. State the energy unit, temperature convention, field unit, moment magnitude, and whether a reported temperature is reduced or physical. If you use k_B T/J, define the reference coupling J; if you use kelvin, provide the material and geometry assumptions that convert the interaction energy.
A reproducible simulation workflow
1. Build and audit the geometry
- Generate the lattice coordinates and easy-axis vectors.
- Construct vertex-to-island and plaquette-to-edge maps. These maps are required later for charge and string extraction.
- Assign moments, interaction parameters, boundaries, and disorder from a configuration file rather than hard-coding them.
- Check that every island has the intended neighbors and that no duplicate or missing edge exists.
- Write both reduced parameters and the physical interpretation to the run metadata.
For a finite sample, record the linear dimensions and number of islands. Finite-size effects are often largest near a transition, where correlation lengths grow and boundaries can seed or terminate strings.
2. Prepare several initial states
Use more than one starting condition. At minimum, prepare random, ice-rule, ordered, and field-polarized states when those states are defined for your geometry. If all runs converge to the same observables after equilibration, confidence in the equilibrium result increases. If they do not, you may be observing metastability, a slow sector change, a first-order transition, or insufficient burn-in.
For each temperature or field point, run independent random seeds. Do not treat consecutive configurations separated by less than the autocorrelation time as independent samples.

3. Equilibrate with an appropriate update rule
For equilibrium Monte Carlo, a single-island flip with Metropolis or another detailed-balance rule is a transparent baseline. Define a sweep as a documented number of attempted flips per island. Discard a burn-in interval, estimate autocorrelation times for energy and an order parameter, and sample only after decorrelation. Near ordering transitions, local flips can become very slow because changing a topological sector may require a long defect string.
Cluster or loop updates can improve equilibration when the representation supports them, but they must preserve the target distribution and respect the geometry. Whatever update you choose, test detailed balance by comparing forward and reverse transition probabilities and by checking that energy histograms are stable when the run is extended.
4. Sweep temperature or field
Use a temperature grid for thermal transitions and a field protocol for hysteresis or driven switching. For a field sweep, document the initial polarization, field direction, step size, dwell time or number of sweeps per step, and whether the field is increased, decreased, or cycled. A field-driven path is not equivalent to an equilibrium temperature scan.
At every point, save raw configurations as well as summary observables. Raw states allow you to reclassify vertices or reconstruct strings with a corrected algorithm without repeating the expensive simulation.

5. Repeat system sizes and protocols
A single sharp-looking peak is not enough to establish a phase transition. Repeat the scan for several lattice sizes and inspect crossings, peak drift, and finite-size scaling. Compare heating and cooling where hysteresis is possible. Repeat with altered disorder seeds if disorder is part of the model. A transition temperature is meaningful only with its geometry, interaction treatment, size, disorder, and protocol attached.
How to locate a phase transition
Energy and specific heat
Record the mean energy per island and its fluctuations. In a canonical Monte Carlo simulation, the fluctuation contribution to specific heat is proportional to (<E²> - <E>²)/(k_B T²), with the proportionality and units determined by your normalization. A peak can indicate a crossover or a finite-size remnant, so compare its position and height across sizes rather than labeling the first peak a critical point.
Susceptibility and response
Measure the fluctuation of the relevant order parameter, magnetization, or staggered magnetization. For a field-driven study, also record the magnetization curve, differential response, and hysteresis loop. Kagome experiments have reported monopole-antimonopole creation and one-dimensional Dirac-string avalanches; Monte Carlo reproduced monopole densities and hysteresis when the protocol was modeled appropriately.

Order, correlations, and structure factors
Define an order parameter that matches the geometry. Use pair correlations and a structure factor to distinguish local ice-rule compliance from long-range ordering. A system can satisfy local rules while remaining globally disordered. Track the correlation length or a fitted decay length, but state the fitting range and boundary treatment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDefect density and sector changes
Classify each vertex and count ice-rule violations or effective charges. Plot defect density against temperature or field alongside energy and order parameters. A defect peak can mark the regime where strings proliferate, but defect density alone does not distinguish isolated pairs from long strings or a percolating network. Combine it with endpoint separation, length distributions, and connectivity.
Extracting static string-like defects
Classify vertices first
At each vertex, sum the directed island contributions according to your chosen charge convention. Label ice-rule vertices, positive and negative charged vertices, and any higher-charge or geometry-specific states. Keep the convention fixed across the entire data set; reversing all arrows changes the sign labels but not the physical connectivity.
Connect defects through the lattice
- Identify the unhappy or charged vertices in a saved configuration.
- Map each vertex to its adjacent plaquettes or lattice edges.
- Place a segment through an unhappy vertex according to the local flipped-moment pattern and connect the appropriate neighboring plaquettes.
- Trace each connected component until it reaches an opposite-charge endpoint, closes into a loop, or terminates at a boundary.
- Store the component’s edge count, physical length if edge lengths differ, endpoints, loop status, and any branches.
The Santa Fe Ice study describes this construction directly: line segments through each unhappy vertex can connect plaquettes so that all unhappy vertices are represented by strings. In that work, Monte Carlo ground states are classified by string configurations, and string lengths follow a Boltzmann distribution linked to magnetic interactions. Your implementation should therefore preserve the full length histogram, not just its mean.
Define length unambiguously
For a uniform lattice, report length as the number of flipped edges or segments and state that convention. For nonuniform geometry, also report physical length. Separate open strings, boundary-terminated strings, and closed loops. Do not silently count a loop as a monopole pair: it has no endpoints under the usual definition.
Distinguish a string phase from a string-rich crossover
Look for a reproducible change in the length distribution, endpoint separation, connectivity, and finite-size behavior. A broadening distribution at high temperature may reflect more defects without a distinct thermodynamic phase. A string phase claim needs an order or connectivity criterion, size dependence, and a specified protocol. In particular, a visually connected path in one snapshot is not evidence of a phase transition.
Reconstructing dynamical strings and monopole trajectories
Static connectivity answers where a string exists in one configuration. To measure motion, save configurations at successive times or after defined update intervals and build a transition graph.

A 2025 study uses transition graphs to represent Dirac strings in space-time as monopole trajectories. This approach avoids confusing two unrelated static strings that happen to occupy nearby edges. The time interval must be reported: a large interval can hide intermediate creation and annihilation events, while an interval shorter than the physical reversal time may not correspond to a meaningful dynamical step.
Monte Carlo, kinetic updates, or micromagnetics?
| Method | Best for | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equilibrium Monte Carlo | Temperature-dependent phase diagrams, equilibrium defect and string statistics | Samples thermodynamic states without resolving nanosecond reversal details | Local updates can become slow near transitions or across topological sectors |
| Field-driven Monte Carlo | Quasi-equilibrium hysteresis and field-dependent monopole density | Can reproduce protocol-dependent avalanches when the field schedule is modeled | Results depend on update rule, sweep schedule, and equilibration assumptions |
| Kinetic or rejection-free updates | Defect trajectories and event-driven dynamics | Efficiently advances between physically relevant reversal events | Requires a justified rate model and calibrated timescale |
| Micromagnetics | Island reversal, local fields, eigenmodes, and spectroscopy | Resolves continuous magnetization and nanoscale mode structure | Computationally expensive for large lattices and not automatically an equilibrium sampler |
| Large-scale dipole simulators such as flatspin | Large interacting mesoscopic-spin arrays and emergent phenomena | Dipole approximation reaches lattice sizes beyond practical full micromagnetics | Microscopic shape and near-field fidelity are sacrificed by the approximation |
Use Monte Carlo when the question is “which states are thermodynamically accessible?” Use kinetic methods when the question is “how does a defect move, and on what modeled timescale?” Use micromagnetics when the question concerns island-scale reversal, local stray fields, or mode spectra. A hybrid project can use Monte Carlo to identify representative states and micromagnetics to examine their local dynamics, but the mapping between the two models must be documented.
Micromagnetic observables for strings and monopoles
Micromagnetics replaces each binary island with a spatially varying magnetization field and numerically integrates the magnetization dynamics under the selected material and damping parameters. It can reveal nonuniform reversal, edge nucleation, transient states, and local fields that an Ising model cannot represent.
The PRL defect study shows that micromagnetic spectra can distinguish monopoles and strings through defect eigenmode signatures. To reproduce that type of result, define the excitation protocol, damping, mesh, material parameters, boundary conditions, and spectral observable. Compare spectra only when the simulated geometry and excitation match the measurement; a mode frequency is not a universal property of a defect label.
Scaling to large lattices
Full micromagnetics becomes expensive as the number of islands grows. The flatspin work demonstrates a large-scale interacting-mesoscopic-spin approach based on a dipole approximation. Its purpose is to reach lattice sizes where full island-resolved calculations are impractical and to study emergent ordering, Dirac strings, and phase transitions. Treat this as a speed-versus-fidelity choice: validate the approximation on a smaller geometry against a more detailed calculation before relying on it for a new lattice or disorder regime.
For any large run, save the random seed, lattice generator version, interaction cutoff or Ewald settings, update schedule, and all analysis parameters. Reproducibility is especially important when a visually striking string network may result from one metastable trajectory.

- Energy checks: calculate the energy change for a single flip independently from the production code and compare it with the incremental update.
- Detailed balance: verify forward and reverse acceptance probabilities for representative local environments.
- Limiting states: recover field-polarized, low-temperature ordered, or noninteracting behavior where the model has an analytic or known limit.
- Geometry checks: render the lattice, easy axes, vertex maps, and periodic images before collecting statistics.
- Equilibration checks: compare independent starts, extend burn-in, and inspect energy and order-parameter autocorrelation.
- Finite-size checks: repeat the transition scan at multiple sizes and report peak shifts or crossings.
- Algorithm checks: vary update order, random-number seed, and sampling interval. A phase boundary that moves substantially may reflect poor equilibration.
- String checks: test the tracing algorithm on hand-built isolated pairs, loops, boundary strings, and adjacent defects.
- Protocol checks: reproduce the exact field direction, sweep rate, thermalization, and initial state used by any experiment or published comparison.
Never transfer a quoted critical temperature from one geometry to another without matching the interaction scale and Hamiltonian. Even within one geometry, disorder, boundaries, finite size, and the field or temperature protocol can shift the observed transition.

A practical analysis record
For each run, maintain a machine-readable record containing:
- lattice type, dimensions, coordinates, easy-axis convention, and boundary condition;
- moment magnitude, interaction model, cutoff or Ewald treatment, and disorder realization;
- temperature or field schedule, initialization, burn-in, sweep count, sampling interval, and random seed;
- update algorithm and any kinetic rate parameters;
- energy, order parameter, susceptibility or response, structure factor, correlation measure, defect density, and string statistics;
- software version and analysis definitions, including charge signs and the string-length convention.
This record lets you distinguish a physical change from a change in numerical settings and makes it possible to rerun only the analysis when a classification rule improves.

What established studies show
- The artificial-spin-ice review establishes the platform’s central themes: emergent monopoles, collective dynamics, and phase transitions in lithographically arranged nanomagnets.
- The Santa Fe Ice study uses Monte Carlo to classify ground states by string configurations and reports a Boltzmann distribution of string lengths associated with magnetic interactions.
- Kagome work observes monopole-antimonopole creation and one-dimensional Dirac-string avalanches; Monte Carlo reproduces monopole densities and hysteresis when the protocol is represented.
- Micromagnetic defect calculations show that spectral signatures can distinguish monopoles from strings, an observable unavailable to a binary-spin model.
- Large-scale dipole simulations make it practical to investigate ordering and defect phenomena beyond the lattice sizes normally accessible to full micromagnetics.
- Transition-graph analysis extends string identification into space-time by representing monopole trajectories rather than only static paths.
Together, these results support a layered strategy: begin with a geometry-faithful binary model, establish equilibrium and finite-size behavior, add kinetic tracking for trajectories, and reserve micromagnetics for questions involving continuous island magnetization or spectra.
