You can reduce spam interruptions without cutting off family, schools, doctors, delivery services, or other legitimate callers. The safest setup is to save important numbers in Contacts, set unknown calls to Ask Reason for Calling or Silence, and enable Screen Unknown Senders in Messages. Those controls sort or silence communications for review; they do not block your saved contacts.
Labels differ slightly by iOS release, carrier, and country. If a menu name is different on your iPhone, use the closest label currently shown in Settings or Messages.
Silencing is different from blocking
Blocking targets a specific phone number or contact. Silencing and screening target communications that iPhone cannot identify, leaving a way to review them later. This distinction lets you reduce interruptions while preserving access to legitimate people who are not yet in your address book.

- Screening an unknown call: iPhone asks the caller for a reason before deciding whether to alert you.
- Screening an unknown message: the message is moved out of the main conversation list and normally does not trigger an alert.
- Blocking: communication from the selected number or contact is stopped. On Apple devices, blocking can also affect contact through other Apple apps.
Because filters rely on whether a sender is known, your first step should be preparing Contacts rather than immediately blocking numbers.

Prepare your iPhone so important people remain reachable
Add must-answer numbers to Contacts
Save the numbers for family members, schools, medical offices, pharmacies, employers, childcare providers, building managers, and any service that may call unexpectedly. Include alternate numbers when an organization uses more than one line. Apple’s unknown-caller controls recognize saved contacts, so this preparation prevents a legitimate call from being treated as an unidentified one.
Review numbers before turning on a filter
Check recent calls and messages for numbers you are expecting. Add a caller to Contacts from the Phone app’s Recents list, or add an unknown message sender to Contacts from the conversation details. If you are waiting for a one-time call from a new number, use Ask Reason for Calling first rather than immediately choosing Silence.
Keep a review habit
Filtering works best when it is paired with a short review routine. Check voicemail and the Phone app’s filtered lists after a period when a legitimate organization might call. In Messages, open the filtered area before deleting anything. Once you verify a sender, mark the sender known or save the number. That converts a one-time exception into a recognized contact for future communication.
Choose how unknown calls should behave
On current iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > Phone and choose the setting for unknown callers. Some releases show a similar control under Settings > Phone. Apple provides three principal choices:

Use Ask Reason for Calling when you are expecting a new number
This option is a compromise between convenience and caution. A legitimate caller can identify the purpose of the call, while automated spam is less likely to interrupt you. It is useful during a medical referral, a job application, a delivery window, or any situation in which the caller may not yet be saved. Screening can incur standard calling or data charges. Roaming calls are not screened, and calling emergency services turns call screening off for 24 hours, according to Apple’s unknown-caller guidance.
Use Silence when you want no unknown-call ringing
Silence routes calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail. It does not make the caller disappear: you can still see the attempt and listen to a message. This is the strongest built-in reduction in ringing, but it requires you to check voicemail and filtered lists so that a first-time legitimate caller is not overlooked.
Review Unknown Callers and Spam lists
Open the Phone app and look for the Unknown Callers and Spam lists when those lists are available on your iPhone. Scan them after enabling Silence or screening, particularly during a week when you expect calls from new organizations. If a call is legitimate, save the number to Contacts before the next attempt.

Turn on carrier-identified spam handling only when available
Some iPhones and carriers can identify calls as spam or fraud. When the control is offered, those calls may be silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to the Spam list. Carrier support and country or region determine whether this feature appears, so treat it as an optional additional layer rather than a promise that every spam call will be caught. Choose the least disruptive setting that fits the week
Use Never when you must hear every call immediately. Switch to Ask Reason for Calling when you want a caller’s explanation before deciding to answer. Choose Silence when uninterrupted time matters more than instant access to an unsaved caller. You can change the setting temporarily for a job interview, medical appointment, move, or delivery and restore Silence afterward.
Filter spam texts without hiding conversations you need
Enable Screen Unknown Senders
- Open Messages.
- Open the filtering menu at the top of the conversation list.
- Tap Manage Filtering.
- Turn on Screen Unknown Senders.
Messages from senders who are not known to you are placed in other folders and do not notify you by default. Your existing conversations with saved contacts remain in the main list. Apple describes this process in its iOS 26 text-message filtering guide.
Understand what you will see after filtering

Transactions and Promotions folders depend on carrier and country support. The exact folders and notification choices can therefore differ from the labels shown in Apple’s guide.

Allow essential alerts without restoring every unknown notification
In Manage Filtering, examine the categories of unknown senders that iOS offers in your region. You may be able to allow notifications for time-sensitive messages, such as verification codes, while leaving ordinary unknown texts silent. Choose the narrowest set of alerts that matches your needs; enabling every category defeats the purpose of screening.
Mark a legitimate sender as known
Open the filtered message, use the available option to mark the sender known, or add the number to Contacts. Future messages from that sender can then appear in your normal conversation list. Do this for a school, clinic, courier, workplace, or other organization as soon as you confirm the message is genuine.
Know the reply limitation
Apple says text filtering does not apply to senders you have replied to three or more times. A conversation that becomes active can therefore return to ordinary message handling. If a persistent spammer keeps receiving replies, stop responding and use reporting or blocking instead.

Do not reply just to make a message visible
A reply can change how future messages are handled, and it confirms that your number is being monitored. If a text looks suspicious, inspect it in the filtered area without responding. Verify a purported delivery, bank, school, or medical message through a channel you already trust rather than by using a link or phone number in the text.

Report spam or block one sender?
Report when you want to flag the message
For an unknown sender in Messages, use the available Report Spam option. Reporting an iMessage sends sender information to Apple. For SMS, MMS, and RCS, the information may be shared with your carrier and its affiliates, depending on the carrier and your country or region.
Reporting is a signal, not a stop command. Apple explicitly says that reporting does not prevent the sender from sending more messages.
Block only when that number must be stopped
To prevent future messages from a particular sender, block the contact or number from the conversation or contact details. Reserve this for a sender you actually want to stop, because blocking on Apple platforms can affect communication through other Apple apps as well. If you merely want fewer alerts and still want the option to inspect the message, leave the sender unblocked and use Screen Unknown Senders.
Use the two actions for different purposes
Report a message when you want Apple or your carrier to receive information about suspected spam. Block a number when you no longer want that specific sender to contact you. You can report first and block afterward, but neither action substitutes for checking whether a legitimate sender was misclassified. Filtering is the reversible, review-oriented choice; blocking is the decisive choice for a particular number.

Keep an important call from going straight to voicemail
If a caller you recognize says the iPhone never rang, work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the number is saved correctly. Open Contacts and check for duplicate entries, an outdated number, or a missing country code. Add the current number if necessary.
- Check the unknown-caller setting. Open Settings > Apps > Phone and review Screen Unknown Callers or the equivalent unknown-caller control. Change Silence to Ask Reason for Calling or Never while you are waiting for the call.
- Inspect call-filtering controls. In the Phone settings, review Call Filtering and any Spam or Unknown Callers options. A carrier filter may have classified the call incorrectly.
- Check Focus. Open Settings > Focus and examine the active Focus mode, allowed people, and allowed calls. A Focus schedule can silence a saved contact even when unknown-caller screening is off.
- Check Blocked Contacts. Search Settings for Blocked Contacts and remove the number if it was blocked accidentally.
- Turn off Silent mode temporarily. Check the Action button, Ring/Silent switch, or Control Center control used by your iPhone model. Also verify that the ringer volume is audible.
- Install available iOS updates. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends updating when calls do not ring as expected.
- Ask the caller to leave a voicemail. If Silence remains enabled, voicemail is the expected route for an unsaved number. Save the caller afterward so subsequent calls are recognized.

Practical setups for different situations
You receive constant robocalls but rarely expect new calls
Save all essential numbers, choose Silence, and review Unknown Callers, Spam, and voicemail once or twice a day. This minimizes interruptions while preserving a recovery path for a legitimate first-time caller.
You are waiting for a call from an unfamiliar organization
Choose Ask Reason for Calling rather than Silence. Check that Focus allows calls, keep the ringer audible, and switch the organization’s number into Contacts as soon as it calls.

Enable Screen Unknown Senders, then allow the time-sensitive notification category if your regional version offers it. Review filtered folders for codes that do not trigger an alert, and never reply to a message merely to make it appear in the main list.
A suspicious text keeps returning
Do not continue the conversation. Report the message if the reporting option is present, then block that specific number if you want to prevent further messages from it. Remember that a report alone does not stop delivery.
You travel or use a carrier with limited filtering support
Check which controls actually appear on your iPhone before relying on them. Call screening does not operate on roaming calls, and Transactions, Promotions, carrier spam identification, and Spam lists may be unavailable in a particular country or on a particular carrier. Keep important numbers in Contacts and use voicemail and manual review as the fallback.

- Call screening may use calling or mobile data and can incur your carrier’s standard rates.
- Screening does not operate on roaming calls, and emergency-service calls disable it for 24 hours.
- Carrier spam identification, Spam lists, and SMS/MMS/RCS Transactions or Promotions folders depend on carrier and regional support.
- No filter guarantees that every spam call or text will be identified correctly. Review filtered calls and messages before deleting them.
- Filtering is not the same as encryption or a guarantee of sender identity; a familiar-looking name or message can still be fraudulent.
- These controls are built into iPhone and Messages, so no physical product is required. Any carrier-level protection, if offered, should be checked for its own availability, terms, and charges.
With Contacts kept current, Ask Reason for Calling available for expected first-time callers, Silence used when interruption matters most, and Screen Unknown Senders enabled for texts, you can substantially reduce spam alerts without indiscriminately blocking people you need to reach you.

Will Silence block a legitimate caller?
No. Silence sends calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail instead of ringing. Review voicemail, Recents, and the Unknown Callers list, then save a legitimate number to Contacts.

Should I use Ask Reason for Calling or Silence?
Use Ask Reason for Calling when you may receive an important call from a new number and want the caller screened first. Use Silence when minimizing interruptions is the priority and you can check voicemail and filtered lists.
Do unknown messages disappear when Screen Unknown Senders is on?
No. They are moved to filtered or other folders and normally do not notify you. Open those folders to review them, then mark a genuine sender known or add the number to Contacts.
Can I still receive verification codes?
You can review codes in filtered folders. In regions that offer the setting, Manage Filtering may allow notifications for time-sensitive unknown messages, so enable only the category you need.
