If your car breaks down, switch on the hazard flashers as soon as you can do so safely. Move completely off the roadway and away from traffic when possible. If you cannot get off the road, stop where approaching drivers can see the vehicle from behind, not immediately beyond a hill crest or around a curve. Call roadside assistance and follow local emergency guidance while you wait. The California Driver Handbook specifically says to stay in the vehicle until help arrives; that instruction is California guidance, not a nationwide rule.

What to do in the first minute

A stopped vehicle is hardest to protect when other drivers do not expect it. Your first job is to make the vehicle predictable and visible, then create as much distance from moving traffic as conditions allow.

  1. Control the vehicle. Keep both hands on the wheel, slow smoothly, and avoid abrupt steering. If the car still responds, use the road edge or shoulder rather than stopping in a travel lane.
  2. Signal the problem. Turn on the emergency flashers. If the vehicle has no emergency-flasher function, California DMV guidance says to use the turn signals instead.
  3. Choose the safest stopping position. Pull fully off the roadway and away from traffic if you can do so without crossing a dangerous surface, dropping into a ditch, or losing control.
  4. Improve sight distance. If a complete pull-off is impossible, stop where approaching traffic has the longest unobstructed view from behind. Do not stop just over a hill crest or immediately around a bend.
  5. Call for help. Contact your roadside-assistance provider or emergency services when there is a collision, injury, fire, immediate traffic danger, or another urgent threat. Give the road name or route, direction of travel, nearest exit or landmark, and your vehicle’s color and location.
  6. Wait in a planned way. Under the California handbook’s breakdown guidance, remain inside the vehicle until assistance arrives. If the vehicle itself becomes dangerous to occupy, follow emergency-dispatch instructions and move only to a clearly safer location.

These actions are a sequence, not a menu: visibility and separation from traffic come before troubleshooting the engine, changing a tire, or retrieving luggage.

Which lights should you use?

Emergency flashers

Hazard lights, also called emergency flashers or four-way flashers, make the vehicle’s stopped or disabled status obvious to drivers approaching from either direction. Use them when vehicle trouble forces you to stop, provided the electrical system still works. Activate them before attempting a roadside inspection.

Turn signals when flashers are unavailable

Some older, damaged, or unusual vehicles may not have working emergency flashers. The cited California DMV instruction is to use the turn signals if emergency flashers are unavailable. The purpose is to communicate that the car is not moving normally; do not assume that a turn signal gives you the same visibility as four-way flashers, especially at night or in poor weather.

Vehicle equipment Action in the cited guidance Important limitation
Working emergency flashers Turn them on as soon as the stop can be made safely. They warn approaching traffic but do not make an unsafe stopping place safe.
No emergency-flasher function Use the turn signals, following California DMV guidance. Turn-signal use is an equipment fallback, not a guarantee of nationwide legal compliance.
Electrical failure affecting all lights Prioritize moving away from traffic if possible and contacting help. Do not remain in a live lane to operate a control that no longer works.

Do not use a light signal as a substitute for positioning the car safely. A flashing lamp cannot compensate for a vehicle hidden by a crest, curve, heavy rain, spray, or darkness.

Where to stop so drivers can see you

Best option: a complete pull-off

Move as far from moving traffic as the road and shoulder safely permit. A paved shoulder, emergency bay, or other designated refuge is preferable to a narrow verge. Keep the vehicle aligned with the roadway rather than angled toward traffic. Once stopped, apply the parking brake and leave the transmission in the appropriate parked or secured position.

Do not force a pull-off that could cause a rollover, sink the vehicle, expose you to a drop-off, or put you in the path of roadside hardware. A controlled stop that leaves the car partly on the shoulder may be safer than a sudden turn onto unstable ground. If you cannot get fully clear, make the car visible from behind and request professional help rather than repeatedly attempting a risky maneuver.

If the car remains partly in the roadway

Select the most visible position available. The California guidance says that when a vehicle cannot get completely off the road, it should stop where people can see it from behind. This usually means maximizing the straight-line view for approaching drivers, not choosing the nearest convenient patch of shoulder.

  • Avoid the blind side of a hill crest; a driver may see your roof only after entering the conflict area.
  • Avoid stopping immediately around a curve, where the road edge hides the vehicle until the last moment.
  • Do not park in a gore area, crossing, tunnel, or other location where lane geometry funnels traffic toward the car unless no safer alternative exists.
  • Keep doors closed and occupants belted while traffic is passing close by.

Visibility is relative to the direction of travel. A position that is visible to vehicles approaching from one direction can be hidden from vehicles approaching from another, so consider both lanes and the road’s curvature.

Calling for help and deciding where to wait

What to tell the dispatcher or roadside provider

Give information that lets a responder find you without stopping in the same danger zone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Road, route, or highway number and your direction of travel.
  • Nearest exit, mile marker, intersection, service area, or visible landmark.
  • Whether the vehicle is fully off the road, partly blocking a lane, or in a dangerous position.
  • Vehicle make, model, color, license-plate details if requested, and the number of occupants.
  • Any injury, smoke, fuel leak, fire, disabled lighting, extreme weather, or other immediate hazard.

Keep the phone available for a return call. If you are on a limited-access road and cannot identify your location, use the map position shown by the phone only if doing so does not require stepping into traffic.

Staying inside versus evacuating

The California Driver Handbook’s exact instruction for this breakdown situation is: “Call for emergency roadside assistance and stay in your vehicle until help arrives.” Treat that as California-specific handbook guidance. Conditions can override a waiting plan: smoke or fire, a vehicle struck by another car, flooding, exposure to a moving-lane impact, or instructions from emergency personnel may require evacuation. If leaving is necessary, move toward a place separated from traffic and never stand behind or immediately beside the disabled vehicle in a live lane.

Warning triangles: useful equipment, not a universal placement recipe

Reflective roadside warning triangles are a recognized category of carried warning device. Their purpose is to give approaching traffic an additional visual cue about a stopped vehicle. They can be a sensible preparedness item, but they are not a prerequisite for calling for help, and the sources cited here do not establish one passenger-car placement distance that applies everywhere.

Why commercial-vehicle distances should not be copied

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Safety Planner describes warning-device duties for covered commercial vehicles. Its examples include placing required warnings within 10 minutes and using four paces (approximately 10 feet) and 40 paces (approximately 100 feet) in specified circumstances. Those timing and distance directions belong to the commercial-vehicle context. Do not present them as a general passenger-car formula without an applicable state or local rule.

Question What the available official material establishes What it does not establish
Are warning triangles relevant? Yes. Federal guidance identifies warning triangles among devices used to warn traffic around certain stopped commercial vehicles. It does not endorse a particular brand, model, listing, or consumer product.
Can a passenger car use the commercial distances? Not on the basis of the commercial-vehicle guidance alone. There is no universal passenger-car distance supplied here.
Does NHTSA certify a triangle product? No. A historical NHTSA interpretation explains the warning-device category. NHTSA does not approve, certify, or endorse commercial products.

A triangle should never require you to walk into a live lane, cross a highway, or approach a blind curve. If deploying one would expose you to traffic, stay with the vehicle and tell the dispatcher that you could not safely place an external warning.

What approaching drivers should do

Breakdowns are also a traffic-management problem for every driver who encounters the stopped vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says drivers should move to a nonadjacent lane when they can do so safely. If a lane change is not safe, they should slow to a reasonable speed and pass with caution.

When a lane change is possible

  1. Check mirrors and blind spots early.
  2. Signal before moving.
  3. Change to a lane that is not immediately adjacent to the stopped vehicle when traffic and road markings permit.
  4. Maintain a safe speed and return only when clear.

When a lane change is not possible

Slow down to a reasonable speed, leave as much lateral clearance as the lane allows, and be prepared for a person, door, or equipment near the vehicle. Do not make a sudden swerve that creates a second collision.

What the law covers

NHTSA’s current webpage summary says all 50 states have Move Over laws for emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The same summary says 19 states and Washington, DC include other vehicles displaying flashing or hazard lights. The exact vehicles covered, required speed reduction, lane-change duty, and penalties vary by jurisdiction and can change. Treat the NHTSA figures as a national overview, then check the law for the state where you are driving.

Breakdown scenarios and the safest response

The engine loses power but steering and brakes still work

Turn on the flashers while the car still has electrical power, signal your move, and coast toward the safest shoulder or refuge. Avoid stopping at the first hidden spot if a short, controlled roll can reach a clearly visible pull-off. Once stopped, do not keep cycling the ignition if that would drain the battery needed for warning lights or a help call.

A flat tire or mechanical noise appears on a high-speed road

Reduce speed smoothly and avoid hard braking or abrupt steering. If the vehicle can be guided to a shoulder without crossing a hazardous area, do so. A roadside service technician can decide whether a repair is safe; changing a tire beside fast traffic is not automatically safer than waiting with the hazards on.

The car stops just beyond a hill or around a bend

If it can be moved safely, roll to a position with a longer view for approaching traffic. If it cannot, activate the available signals immediately, call for assistance, and tell the dispatcher that sight distance is limited. Do not walk backward toward the crest or curve to warn drivers unless emergency personnel specifically direct you and the route is demonstrably safe.

Night, fog, heavy rain, or snow

Visibility margins are smaller, so the value of a complete pull-off and early signaling increases. Keep occupants inside unless remaining there is more dangerous than reaching a protected place. Report the weather and lighting problem when you call; responders may need to approach more slowly or use a different access point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A collision leaves the vehicle disabled

Use the flashers if they work, call emergency services, and report injuries first. Do not stand between vehicles or in a lane to exchange information. Follow the instructions of police, fire, or medical responders about moving occupants and preserving the scene.

A practical roadside-preparation checklist

Preparation reduces the number of decisions you must make beside traffic. Keep the following accessible without unloading the car into the roadway:

  • A charged phone and charging cable or power bank.
  • Your roadside-assistance contact information and vehicle-insurance details.
  • A flashlight, preferably with spare batteries.
  • Reflective roadside warning triangles, if you can carry them and local rules or conditions make them useful.
  • Water, basic first-aid supplies, and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Vehicle information such as fuel type, tire size, and any mobility or medical needs of passengers.

Learn the location of the hazard-light switch before an emergency. Test it while parked, not on the shoulder. Store warning devices where an occupant can reach them without opening a door toward traffic.

Geographic and legal limits of this advice

The most specific stop-and-wait instructions cited here come from the California Department of Motor Vehicles’ California Driver Handbook. They are useful safety guidance, but they should not be presented as nationwide law. Shoulder use, required lights, warning-device duties, and rules for leaving a vehicle differ by state, road authority, vehicle type, and weather.

Commercial-vehicle requirements are a separate category. The FMCSA timing and pace-based examples apply to covered commercial vehicles and should not be copied into passenger-car instructions. Likewise, the NHTSA Move Over summary is an overview of state laws, not a substitute for the statute where the incident occurs.

If you regularly cross state lines, check each jurisdiction’s driver handbook or transportation-agency guidance before relying on a legal detail. In an actual emergency, prioritize avoiding a collision, contacting emergency services, and following directions from on-scene officials.
