To sign out of ChatGPT everywhere, open Settings, choose Security (or Security and login), open Active sessions, and select Log out of all sessions or Log out all. Confirm Log out of all devices. Your current session ends immediately; other ChatGPT sessions can take up to 30 minutes to receive the logout.
What “log out everywhere” does
ChatGPT’s Active sessions control signs out the OpenAI-managed ChatGPT sessions associated with your account. It is the right action when you lost a laptop or phone, used ChatGPT on a shared computer, or see a device you do not recognize.
OpenAI says the command logs out all active sessions, including the session you are using. The current browser is closed out immediately, while other ChatGPT sessions may take up to 30 minutes to be logged out. You do not need access to the missing device to use this control.
The control is narrower than a universal identity-system reset. It does not display or manage third-party app sessions, connected apps, Sign in with ChatGPT sessions used only by third-party services, or Codex CLI sessions. Accounts that use organization single sign-on (SSO), including SAML or OIDC, may not have an Active sessions page at all.

Sign out of ChatGPT on every device
Use the web interface
- Sign in to ChatGPT in a browser.
- Open Settings.
- Select Security or Security and login. OpenAI uses both labels in its guidance, and the wording can vary by interface.
- Open Active sessions.
- Select Log out of all sessions. Some interfaces label the same control Log out all.
- Confirm by selecting Log out all devices.
After confirmation, the browser you are using is logged out. Other active ChatGPT sessions are invalidated as the logout propagates; OpenAI’s published guidance allows up to 30 minutes for those sessions.
What to do when the current row has no logout button
The row representing your current session cannot be logged out directly. A row may also have no Log out control or may display Session status unavailable. In those cases, use the global Log out of all sessions control rather than trying to remove the row individually.
Review the list before revoking anything
The Active sessions page can help you identify an unfamiliar login before you take action. Depending on the account and interface, a row can include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Device or browser information.
- The first-party product context, such as ChatGPT, Codex, or API Platform.
- An approximate location.
- The sign-in date and time.
- Whether the device is trusted.
- Whether the row is your current session.
Location is approximate, so a nearby city, mobile-network location, or VPN exit point may not match the physical device precisely. Treat the list as a record of OpenAI-managed sessions, not as a complete inventory of every place your account identity may be used.
Revoke only one device or browser
Standard session
Find the device or browser in Active sessions and select Log out on that row. This is useful when you still want to keep your other computers signed in.

Trusted device
A trusted device can show Log out and remove instead. That action ends the session and removes the device from the trusted-device list. Use it when the device was sold, lost, shared, or should no longer be treated as trusted.
When a single-session action is not available
If a row has no actionable control, shows an unavailable status, or you cannot determine which row belongs to the lost device, use the all-devices logout. The global control is the reliable fallback for an unknown or inaccessible device.
Choose the right scope and timing
| Action | Scope | Expected timing | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Log out on one row | One listed OpenAI-managed session | That session is ended; the page may update its status | You recognize all other devices and want to keep them signed in |
| Log out and remove | One trusted device, including its trusted status | Session termination and trusted-device removal are requested together | A trusted computer or phone is no longer under your control |
| Log out of all sessions / Log out all | All active ChatGPT sessions known to session management, including the current one | Current session immediately; other ChatGPT sessions may take up to 30 minutes | A lost device, an unknown login, or a full ChatGPT session reset |
If you lost a device or cannot identify a login
Do not wait for access to the missing computer or phone. Sign in from a device you control, open Settings → Security (or Security and login) → Active sessions, and use Log out of all sessions. This is safer than trying to guess which individual row corresponds to the missing device.
Because propagation to other ChatGPT sessions can take up to 30 minutes, keep the account under observation during that interval. Do not treat a still-open screen on another device during that window as proof that the logout failed; it may not yet have received the invalidation.
What to do after suspected unauthorized access
Logging out sessions removes active ChatGPT logins, but it does not by itself fix a compromised password, an exposed API key, or access granted through another service. OpenAI recommends a broader response when a password was exposed, reused, or shared.

- Change the password immediately if it may be known to someone else or was reused on another service. Use a new password that is not shared with any other account.
- Log out of all ChatGPT sessions using the Active sessions control. Do this even after changing the password so existing logins are explicitly terminated.
- Review security history and sign-in methods for activity you do not recognize. Check the authentication methods associated with the account rather than relying only on the device list.
- Delete exposed API keys and inspect API usage when API access is relevant to the incident. A ChatGPT session logout is not a substitute for rotating a key that may have been copied.
- Contact OpenAI Support if suspicious activity continues, you cannot secure the account, or you need help interpreting account activity.
Keep evidence such as unfamiliar session times, approximate locations, and unexpected usage details before deleting information that Support may need to investigate.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) strengthens future sign-ins, but OpenAI explicitly states that enabling MFA does not cancel existing logins. If you turn on MFA and need every current login terminated, return to Settings → Security (or Security and login) → Active sessions and run the all-devices logout separately.
This two-step sequence matters after a suspected compromise: first add the stronger sign-in requirement, then invalidate sessions that were created before MFA was enabled. MFA enrollment alone should not be treated as a session-revocation command.
Use Advanced Account Security for stronger sign-in protection
OpenAI describes Advanced Account Security as an optional setting for eligible personal ChatGPT accounts. It requires stronger authentication methods such as passkeys or FIDO-compatible security keys. OpenAI names YubiKeys as one optional hardware-key example; any FIDO-compatible security key can be used.
Enrollment has a deliberate global effect: it signs the account out of all devices. You then sign in again with the enrolled passkey or security key. Plan for that interruption and make sure the passkey or hardware key is available before starting enrollment.

Eligibility and availability can vary. Organization accounts governed by SSO may have different security controls, and the absence of Advanced Account Security or Active sessions is not evidence that the account has no sessions; it may reflect the account’s authentication setup.

Third-party apps and connected services
Active sessions does not show or revoke sessions created by third-party applications, connected apps, or Sign in with ChatGPT flows used only to access another service. If you suspect one of those connections is involved, revoke access in the relevant third-party service as well as logging out of ChatGPT.
Codex CLI and other separate clients
Codex CLI sessions are outside the Active sessions list described by OpenAI. A global ChatGPT logout therefore should not be presented as a command that terminates every CLI authentication state. Secure those clients through their own sign-out or credential-revocation controls.
API credentials
API keys are credentials, not browser sessions. If a key may be exposed, delete it and review API usage; logging out of ChatGPT does not rotate or invalidate that key.
Organization SSO
Accounts linked to organization SSO, including SAML or OIDC, may not provide Active sessions. In that situation, follow your organization’s identity-provider and administrator procedures for revoking sign-ins, and contact the organization’s support channel if you cannot end access yourself.

Troubleshoot a logout that appears not to work
The other device is still showing ChatGPT
Allow the published propagation window of up to 30 minutes for other ChatGPT sessions. Close and reopen the browser or app on that device after the window, then sign in again if prompted. A cached page or an offline screen can remain visible even though the session has been invalidated.
You cannot find Security or Active sessions
Open Settings and look for either Security or Security and login. Interface labels can differ. If neither area contains Active sessions, the account may use organization SSO or another configuration for which OpenAI does not provide that page.
A device row says “Session status unavailable”
Use the global logout control. OpenAI recommends that route when an individual row cannot be acted on.
Recommended Free Tools
You enabled MFA but an old device remains signed in
MFA does not cancel existing logins. Run Log out of all sessions manually, then sign in again with MFA on devices you still control.
You are still concerned after logging out
Change the password, review security history and sign-in methods, remove exposed API keys, inspect relevant API usage, and contact OpenAI Support. Also investigate third-party connected services separately, because they are outside this control.
A practical response checklist
- Use Log out for one known device you want to remove.
- Use Log out and remove for a trusted device that should lose both its session and trusted status.
- Use Log out of all sessions when a device is lost, a login is unknown, or you need a complete ChatGPT session reset.
- Wait up to 30 minutes for other ChatGPT sessions to receive the global logout.
- Change a compromised or reused password; do not rely on logout alone.
- Remember that MFA enrollment does not terminate existing sessions.
- Handle connected apps, third-party sign-ins, Codex CLI sessions, API keys, and organization SSO through their respective controls.
What to expect when you sign back in
After a global logout, you will need to authenticate again on devices you continue using. If you enabled MFA, complete the additional verification step. If you enrolled in Advanced Account Security, use the passkey or FIDO-compatible security key selected during enrollment. Devices removed from the trusted list may require the normal trust or verification process again.
