You generally cannot sign in to a router’s admin page without its admin password. If it is your router or one you are authorized to manage, check the device label and model-specific instructions, try any recovery feature you set up earlier, and use a factory reset only when the manufacturer or ISP recommends it. The router admin password is different from the Wi-Fi password you use to connect devices.
Know which password you need
Routers commonly have two separate credentials: the Wi-Fi network password, which lets devices join the wireless network, and the admin password, which controls router settings. The Federal Trade Commission explains this distinction in its home Wi-Fi security guidance. If you can connect to Wi-Fi but cannot open the router settings, the admin password is the one you need to recover.
Find your router’s login method
- Connect to your own router. Use Wi-Fi or a network cable, then open a browser on that connected device.
- Check the label and manual. Look for the router’s admin address, username, and initial password. Use instructions for the exact make and model; login addresses and default credentials vary. Examples such as
192.168.0.1and10.0.0.1are not universal. Cyber.gov.au’s home Wi-Fi guidance also recommends checking the router label or manual. - Try the listed credentials only if they have not been changed. Some models use credentials printed on the device, while others require you to create a custom admin password. Do not assume a default username or password applies to every router.
If you changed and forgot the admin password
Look up the exact model’s current support instructions for “forgot password” or password recovery. A recovery option may work only if you configured it before being locked out, such as by adding a recovery email or setting security questions. If you did not enable the feature, it may not be available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRecovery options differ by device and provider. For example, instructions for the covered Verizon 5G Home Router say to connect to the gateway, visit my.router or 192.168.0.1, and select “Forgot Admin Password?” to answer a security question; its default WebGUI password is on the underside label. These steps apply to that specific router, not all Verizon or ISP equipment. See Verizon’s 5G Home Router instructions.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
When a factory reset is the fallback
If the model’s instructions say password recovery is unavailable, a factory reset may restore access. It also returns the router to its factory state, which can erase custom admin, Wi-Fi, and internet settings. You may need to configure the network again, and an ISP-provided gateway may need provider-specific setup.
Reset procedures vary, so follow the instructions for your exact router or contact your ISP before resetting unfamiliar provider equipment. TP-Link’s current guidance for the models covered by its FAQ says to hold the powered-on router’s Reset button for about 10 seconds; it warns that custom settings are erased. That timing and procedure are TP-Link-specific, not a universal reset method. See TP-Link’s forgotten router login password FAQ.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Secure the router after you regain access
- Replace default admin credentials. Set a strong, unique password so the management page is not left with factory credentials.
- Use current Wi-Fi encryption. Choose WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal when the router offers it. The FTC advises considering a replacement only if an older router cannot be updated to support WPA2 or WPA3 and offers only outdated WPA or WEP encryption. That is a security consideration, not a normal password-recovery step. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi recommendations.
- Disable remote management if you do not need it. This reduces access to the admin interface from outside your local network. Check your router or ISP instructions for the setting.
- Check for updates. Follow the manufacturer’s or ISP’s update instructions; the FTC advises asking your ISP whether its routers receive automatic updates.
