You can sign in to a Google Account without typing its password by creating a passkey on a FIDO2-capable USB security key. The key must support FIDO2, and you must set it up as a passkey; simply registering a key for 2-Step Verification does not make sign-in passwordless.

Passkey or second step: choose the setup you mean

A security key can serve two different roles in a Google Account. For passwordless sign-in, create a passkey on a FIDO2-capable key. For conventional 2-Step Verification, the key is an extra check after you enter your password; Google supports FIDO1 or FIDO2 keys for that second-step use.

Configuration What happens at sign-in Key requirement
Passkey on a USB key Sign in with the key instead of entering the password when the passkey flow is available. FIDO2-capable key with a passkey created on it.
Security key for 2-Step Verification Enter the password, then use the key as the second step. Google supports FIDO1 or FIDO2 keys for this role.

Google describes a passkey as opting into a passkey-first, passwordless sign-in experience, but that does not delete your account password or remove every alternative sign-in option.

What you need before you start

  • A USB security key explicitly documented as supporting FIDO2. Google names Titan Security Keys and compatible keys from trusted retailers; check the protocol and connector before buying.
  • A computer or mobile device, browser, and USB port or adapter that work with the key. Google says an Android device may need a USB adapter.
  • Access to your Google Account settings. If this is a work or school account, your administrator may control whether passkeys or security keys are available.
  • A recovery plan: add recovery information and another way to sign in, and consider keeping a second key somewhere safe.

Create a passkey on the USB security key

  1. Sign in to your Google Account and open Passkeys in your Google Account.
  2. Select Create a passkey, then choose Use another device.
  3. Connect the USB key and follow the prompts. Depending on the key, you may need to enter its PIN or use its fingerprint sensor.
  4. When setup completes, review the Skip password when possible preference if you want Google to prioritize passwordless sign-in where supported.

Google says older hardware keys added to an account before May 2023 may need to be removed from the account before you can create a passkey on them. Its instructions also note that a newly added key may take up to seven days to become available at sign-in; check the live guidance for the current details.

Use the key to sign in

  1. Open a Google sign-in page and enter your account username.
  2. When Google offers the passkey sign-in flow, choose it and connect or use the USB key as prompted.
  3. Complete any requested key interaction, such as entering its PIN or using its fingerprint sensor.

The exact prompt can vary by device and browser. If the key is not recognized, Google may offer another sign-in method instead.

Check compatibility before relying on it

Compatibility depends on the key, connector, device, browser, and account policy—not just on whether a USB port is present. Google lists supported browsers in its help guidance, and Android users may need an adapter. For a managed work or school account, ask the administrator whether security keys and passkeys are permitted.

Keep a backup way into the account

Set up recovery information and an alternate sign-in method before making the key your routine way to log in. Google recommends a primary security key and at least one backup key for people using keys. Store the backup separately so losing or damaging the primary does not leave both unavailable.

If you lose a key while you can still access the account, remove the lost key from your account and add a replacement. If you have no other second step or have forgotten the password, Google directs users to account recovery. In the documented scenario, verification may take 3–5 business days. Google also says that after changing recovery information or authentication factors, it may send codes to previous contact information for seven days; consult Google’s current recovery guidance before making changes.

When Advanced Protection makes sense

Google’s Advanced Protection Program is an optional safeguard for people at higher risk of targeted attacks, not a requirement for ordinary passkey sign-in. It requires a passkey or security key; if you choose password sign-in, Google says you must also use a security key. Google describes enrollment as free, although physical keys may cost money, and recommends recovery contact information plus a primary and backup key.
