Package the Python sidecar as part of the app’s signed code hierarchy, build and inspect every native dependency for the architectures you support, sign nested code from the inside out, then notarize and test the exact artifact users will download. Signing, notarization, and Gatekeeper testing are separate checks; passing one does not guarantee the next.
The details depend on your Python packager, ML framework and runtime, distribution channel, and minimum supported macOS version. The steps below use Apple’s macOS signing guidance and PyInstaller’s documented behavior as examples—not as a universal compatibility guarantee.
1. Put code and data in the right bundle locations
Use macOS’s standard bundle layout rather than treating the app as an arbitrary directory tree. Apple’s archived Code Signing Tasks guide identifies Contents/MacOS and Contents/Helpers for helper apps and tools, Contents/Frameworks for frameworks and dynamic libraries, and Contents/Resources for scripts and non-Mach-O executables. It specifically says: “Store Python, Perl, shell, and other script files, and other non-Mach-O executables in your app’s Contents/Resources directory.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep executable code in recognized code locations and ordinary resources in resource locations. Arbitrary files inside code directories, or code placed where the system expects ordinary data, can complicate signature validation. Avoid custom hierarchies within recognized code directories.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Build for the Macs you actually support
Choose a target architecture deliberately: thin x86_64 for Intel, thin arm64 for Apple Silicon, or universal2 when you need both in one build. The right choice depends on whether every native dependency—including the ML runtime and helper tools—is available for those architectures, as well as your size and build-complexity constraints.
PyInstaller’s macOS multi-architecture documentation supports x86_64, arm64, and universal2 targets. By default, it follows the architecture of the running Python process. For example, an Apple Silicon machine running Python under Rosetta can produce an x86_64 target. Check the actual build process instead of inferring the result from the computer’s hardware.
Audit the interpreter, Python extension modules, ML framework libraries, and bundled helpers together. A universal main executable does not make a thin extension universal; a single incompatible native component can prevent the sidecar from launching or loading its dependencies.

Some packagers rewrite collected binaries—for example, to adjust library paths. Those changes can invalidate existing signatures. PyInstaller documents that it regenerates signatures for collected binaries after binary processing on macOS. Treat this as a reason to make signing a deliberate final build stage, not an assumption that signatures from upstream binaries remain valid.

Inspect signatures on the completed artifact after packaging and any other binary transformations. If you modify a binary after signing, sign it again before signing the enclosing app.
4. Sign nested code before the app
The app’s outer signature seals its resources and records the state of its nested code. Apple’s archived signing guide says nested components must be signed correctly before the enclosing signature is created and describes signing individual components “leaving no gaps.”
Work from the deepest nested code outward: sign native libraries and frameworks, then embedded tools and helpers, then the app bundle. Give each executable the signing settings and entitlements appropriate to its role. Signing only the outer .app does not repair unsigned or incorrectly signed nested code.

5. Don’t use codesign --deep as your signing plan
Apple’s distribution-signing guidance states: “Don’t pass the --deep option to codesign when you sign code.” Deep signing applies the same options to nested code, even when the host app and an embedded command-line sidecar need different entitlements. It can also miss nested code outside expected bundle locations.

Use explicit inside-out signing steps so each component receives its intended identity and entitlements. Apple documents --deep as useful in some verification contexts; that is different from relying on it to sign a complex product.
6. Keep Hardened Runtime library validation unless a dependency requires an exception
For notarization, Apple requires Hardened Runtime. Its default library-validation policy accepts Apple system libraries and code signed with the same Team ID as the main executable. An embedded ML runtime, plug-in, or framework signed under another identity may therefore be denied at load time.
Diagnose the specific library and its signature identity before changing entitlements. Apple’s Hardened Runtime documentation explains that the disable-library-validation entitlement permits arbitrary plug-ins and frameworks, but draws extra Gatekeeper scrutiny. If your app genuinely needs that exception, document the dependency and apply the entitlement only to the executable that needs it. Do not use it as a blanket fix for an unexplained load error.
7. Keep runtime-generated files outside the signed app
After signing, treat the bundle as immutable. Apple’s embedding and code-signing guidance uses Python bytecode generation as an example: Python may write .pyc files beside source files, changing the signed bundle and breaking its seal.

Keep caches, downloaded models, logs, and mutable application state in writable user-data locations outside the app bundle. Choose storage locations and retention rules to suit your update and privacy model; the signing guidance does not prescribe a particular ML-model storage design.
8. Sign first, then submit for notarization
Signing and notarization are distinct. For direct distribution, Apple’s notarization guide calls for valid signatures on distributed executables, a Developer ID signing identity, Hardened Runtime, and a secure timestamp. Notarization is an automated scan for malicious content and code-signing issues—not App Review. As Apple puts it, “Notarization of macOS software is not App Review.”
Use Apple’s current notarization submission workflow: its instructions specify notarytool, not the retired altool or the Xcode 13-and-earlier submission path. Check Apple’s current documentation when preparing a release because submission requirements and tooling can change.
9. Test the artifact users receive, with Gatekeeper in the loop
A successful packaging or signing command does not establish that Gatekeeper will accept the download on first launch. Test the exact distributed artifact—such as the disk image, installer, or app package—rather than only a build-directory copy. Apple’s archived code-signing guide describes checking signatures with codesign, assessing policy with spctl, and testing the packaged app after quarantine through download or transfer so the first-launch path is exercised.

- Verify the completed bundle: use
codesignto inspect the app and its nested code after all packaging and signing steps. - Assess the distributed package: use
spctlto evaluate the artifact under the relevant system policy. - Exercise first launch: test the quarantined artifact as a user would receive it, not an unquarantined developer copy.
- Repeat across your support matrix: test each supported architecture and minimum macOS baseline, including the actual sidecar launch and native-library loading.
These checks address signing and Gatekeeper acceptance; they do not establish ML correctness, performance, or framework support. Those require separate product-specific tests for the model runtime and app behavior.
Which distribution and architecture choices change the work?
| Choice | What it means | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
x86_64 |
Intel architecture target | Requires compatible native dependencies; does not by itself serve Apple Silicon natively. |
arm64 |
Apple Silicon architecture target | Requires compatible native dependencies; does not provide a native Intel build. |
universal2 |
Combines Intel and Apple Silicon architectures where supported | Every relevant native component must support the needed architectures; packaging and artifact complexity may increase. |
| Direct distribution | Distribute outside the Mac App Store, typically with Developer ID signing and notarization | Follow Apple’s direct-distribution signing and notarization requirements. |
| Mac App Store | Distribute through Apple’s store channel | Channel-specific requirements differ; consult Apple’s current submission guidance. |
| Default library validation | Load Apple system libraries and libraries signed by the same Team ID | Preserves the default restriction; dependencies signed under another identity may require a different integration approach. |
| Disable library validation | Permit arbitrary plug-ins or frameworks where the entitlement is applied | Use only for a documented need; Apple applies additional Gatekeeper scrutiny. |
These options are not interchangeable shortcuts. The supported hardware, availability of architecture-compatible dependencies, distribution channel, and security needs determine the combination that fits.
What the available guidance does not settle
No Python version, ML framework, model runtime, GPU or Metal configuration, package builder, minimum macOS version, or distribution channel is specified here. The cited guidance therefore cannot establish a precise compatibility matrix, required entitlement set, or performance expectation for a particular sidecar. PyInstaller’s architecture and binary-processing notes describe PyInstaller behavior; they should not be generalized to other packagers. Validate your own dependency graph and finished deliverables on every supported architecture and macOS target.
