Discord’s published free upload limit is 20 MB as of August 2026, but the limit can vary for accounts included in experiments. Compressing a GIF before uploading can help when it exceeds your account’s limit; the trade-off is that smaller dimensions, fewer frames, or fewer colors can change how it looks or moves.

Why a GIF can be too large for Discord

Animated GIFs can grow quickly because they store a sequence of images. More pixels, frames, and color detail can all contribute to a larger file. Discord supports GIF uploads, and you can attach one by selecting the file or dragging it into the browser or desktop app.

Discord Support’s File Attachments FAQ, updated August 13, 2026, says the free upload limit is 20 MB, up from 10 MB. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB, and Nitro allows uploads up to 1 GB. Discord also says it is experimenting with upload limits, so the limit shown for your account may differ.

Discord checks file size before compression on mobile as well as desktop, according to the same FAQ. That means relying on Discord’s client-side processing to rescue an oversized source is not a dependable workaround. The FAQ describes limits in MB; Discord’s developer reference gives a default of 20 MiB per file and notes that account Nitro status or server boost tier may raise it. MB and MiB are different units, so those figures should not be treated as precisely interchangeable.

How to reduce a GIF’s file size

There is no guaranteed compression ratio: the result depends on the source GIF and the adjustments you make. Common controls include resizing, reducing frames, and reducing the color palette. Each can shrink the file, but each comes with a visual cost.

Resize the image

Reducing the GIF’s width and height lowers the number of pixels in each frame. This can be effective for a GIF that will appear small in chat, but too much resizing can make details hard to see. Preserve the proportions so the image does not look stretched.

Use fewer frames

Removing frames can lower file size, but may make motion look less smooth. If the editing tool lets you trim the animation, removing unnecessary opening or ending frames can reduce the file without changing the motion in the middle.

Reduce the color palette

A GIF uses a limited palette. Reducing its number of colors can cut size, but may introduce banding or make gradients and subtle color differences look rough. Check areas with fine shading, text, or skin tones after export.

Pixillion Image Converter Software for Mac- Convert Photo and Image File Formats [Download]
  • Convert images to jpeg, gif, png, bmp, tiff and more
  • Rotate, resize and compress digital photos
  • Easily add captions or watermarks to your images
  • Compress thousands of photos at a time with batch conversion
  • Convert images directly from the right-click menu

These are examples of common GIF controls documented by a separate editing project; they should not be assumed to be features of every compressor. For instance, Cleanor’s GIF compressor documentation describes resizing, reducing frames, and adjusting palette colors, with the corresponding trade-offs.

What “100% in your browser” means—and what to verify

A browser-based compressor can process a GIF without requiring a separate desktop app. But the phrase “runs 100% in your browser” does not, by itself, prove that a particular tool keeps files on your device. To establish that, check the tool’s own privacy explanation or source code for whether the GIF is uploaded to a server, and avoid processing sensitive files until you are satisfied with its handling.

Check the export before sending it

  1. Make one adjustment at a time—dimensions, frames, or colors—so you can see which change has the biggest effect.
  2. Preview the exported GIF and check that its motion, timing, and visual details are still acceptable.
  3. Check the actual exported file size against the limit Discord shows for your account. Do not assume the published free-tier limit applies to every account while Discord says limits may vary during experiments.
  4. If it is still too large, make a smaller adjustment and export again. If the quality is already unacceptable, use a different source or share the animation another way rather than continuing to degrade it.
  5. Attach the GIF by selecting it or dragging it into Discord’s browser or desktop app, then confirm the upload completes.

Discord’s developer reference also notes that animated WebP and AVIF do not convert cleanly to GIF and recommends requesting animated images as WebP for maximum compatibility in the contexts it documents. That is format guidance, not evidence that this compressor accepts those formats or that they are a drop-in replacement for GIF in every Discord workflow.
